Just starting the process??
baribetty replied to ChynaDollMUA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
After your second Kaiser options class you will be cleared to get your first round of labs, an EKG, and a chest X-ray. Then a few weeks later you’ll meet with the bariatric doctor again, sort of as a check in. This appointment seemed pointless to me. Once you finish your 12 weeks you’ll meet with that doctor again, and get cleared for the psych evaluation and do labs again. You will start Vitamins during your classes, and if you are Vitamin deficient they may put you on a stronger dose (common for Vitamin D, but I didn’t experience that myself) At some point you have to go a support group, too. I went to one in West Covina and it was great- you basically just chat with people who have had the surgery and people just like you, with questions before surgery. Once all that’s done you’ll be scheduled to meet with the surgeon and they will have you do final labs (needed before surgery, Like blood type, etc), and you will get your surgery date! My bari doctor (Dr. Murali) said there would be about a month before I would see the surgeon and another month before surgery, in reality though, I saw my surgeon 2 weeks later (4/20) and was scheduled for surgery 12 days later (5/2/18). I jumped at every opportunity to speed up the process, including calling to see if there were cancellations for appointments along the way that I could grab instead of waiting. For example, I went to my Psych appt at 11am and as I left I checked at the appointment window and there happened to be a cancellation with Dr. Murali at noon, so I did both of those appointments in one day instead of waiting 18 days to see Dr. Murali to be cleared to meet with the surgeon. I lost about 10% of my body weight during the classes but the Dr said as long as you’re making progress that’s what is important, rather than saying “everyone lose 20 pounds”. At the support group they said the people who have lost the most weight get priority, but I don’t know if that is true so much as the fact that it looks good, and the surgeon doesn’t have to ask you to lose more weight or show that you’re serious. My Surgeon (dr. Chin) seemed to think I was doing great. He asked if I had any dates in mind for surgery, and I said the sooner the better, so he scheduled me for 5/2. I was shocked. I overheard a lady next to me being scheduled for August 15, so if you’re flexible let them know! I know this may be a little dysfunctional, but I didn’t diet before my first class and weigh in, and I never took my shoes off until the last weigh in [emoji23]. You want to look good on paper and show weight loss , instead of trying to be as light as possible at the beginning. -
I am sorry to hear about your husband. But bypass surgery isn’t easy. I believe your husbands doc meant it may not be as arduous for him as it is for others but your hunby is going to need assistance bathing, getting dressed etc. he won’t be able to lift things over a certain amount of weight and he will be in pain. if it were my husband, I would postpone the bariatric surgery. You will be fine after yours and driving should be ok as long as you aren’t on pain meds but your husband is going to need some extreme care and tending to. If your family can just take care of the kids, great, but one person alone is going to need to care for your husband.

Hopefully you'll see Senor or Senorita Surgeon before your surgeon before your surgery. One poster said she saw hers for about 45 seconds before the anesthesiologist put her to sleep, at least she, thinks it was him, everybody had masks on. Another said she saw hers the morning afterwards when he made rounds, she thinks it was him because she had seen him 7 months before in the office and never again. I know delegation of responsibility is common but for what your insurance or you yourself are paying him, if he's not going to see you personally again, he should at least fax you an 8 by 10 glossy picture so you'll recognize him. Wish my ex-surgeon had given me his picture, that way I'd have something to throw darts at. My future surgeons, I just, pull up OSU's Bariatric website on Google or Firefox and there they are, in full smiling pose..

Unsupportive mother
doingit4me2017 replied to lokaaaal8888888's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my sleeve over a year ago and i have never told my mother, she would see it as a failure that I could not lose the weight on my own. Which is sooo wrong. Bariatric surgery is a tool, YOU have to continue the course, be active, maintain a healthy diet to keep the weight off. It's not a golden ticket to being skinny forever. If you have done the research, have decided that you want to improve your overall physical and mental health then have the surgery. then do it. I hope you have other support people in your life. I am a grown married woman with grown children. You need to do what you need to do to be healthy, make your own choices. Thank goodness my husband and children are supportive, I wish it would have done it sooner. -

For a little background info, I was diagnosed with Crohns in 2011, have been asymptomatic since 2012 and stopped my crohns medication in 2013 due to loss of insurance. I started my WLS journey 9 months ago in July. At my first appointment my surgeon thought I may have been misdiagnosed and recommended I have a colonoscopy as WLS is contraindicated for people with Crohns. He seemed pretty sure I did not have Crohn’s since I had very mild symptoms before being diagnosed. I wasn’t able to get a colonoscopy until the end of October, and it came back still indicating I do indeed have Crohn’s. My GI doctor wasn’t sure why I wasn’t having symptoms, but did see inflammation which was contained to my colon. She put me on mesalamine and wanted to do calprotectin labs to check inflammation in February. I returned to my surgeon and was informed that he did not feel comfortable performing WLS with this condition. I was pretty devastated but wasn’t going to let it get me down. I had lost 20 pounds (10 pounds more than the goal he had set for me) and accepted the fact that I will have to do this on my own. A month later I was called back into the bariatric clinic and my surgeon had went to a bariatric surgery conference in DC and proposed my case and spoke with other surgeons and all of a sudden he was able to offer me the sleeve. He advised against RNY due to if I ever became symptomatic I might require addition surgery as it could spread. I was looking to do full RNY due to the possibility of having dumping but I would take the sleeve over nothing. The catch was we have to wait until the inflammation in my colon goes down. 3 months was basically wasted on the mesalamine. Nothing changed. My GI doctor started me on a 2 month prednisone taper. Prednisone is the freaking devil. I gained 23 pounds but had the labs re-done and my inflammation went down from 374 to 81 and normal was Now my VSG is scheduled for 5/31! Does anyone else have Crohn’s? Have you had problems?

Gallbladder removed last week QUESTIONS!
XYZXYZXYZ1955 replied to sleevedshereen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm not sure this will be helpful, as I had my gallbladder out decades before the bariatric surgery, but I don't recall any particular hunger issues associated with the surgery. I had gained weight; I continued to gain weight, but I think that was more to do with eating the wrong things and not exercising at all, basically. I'd suggest giving yourself a week or two to stabilize, but if it continues to be an issue, consult your doctor and nutritionist. -
I suspect I will grit my teeth every, morning, every bedtime I will say Every day is one day sooner to surgery. Remember my peeps, I have had the equivalent of a 13 month pregnancy carrying the surgery dream around, while many of you have had a smoothly greased slide into your sleeve or RnY I have continued to waddle along waving as you zoomed by. Oh I've helped each of you set,off your fireworks, but I never got a sparkler, or even a box of bang snaps out of the deal. Always a bridesmaid but not the Bariatric Bride. But I may still be the June Bariatric Bride, I've ordered the houquet, shoes and tiara, I'm going to be ready for my Surgical Bridegroom when he calls me to him. I feel a little like a Jerry Springer bride, don't care about ratings --just going to be sure to make an appearance--.Keep tuned in, you don't want to miss this one!👼

Don’t pay. They have broken HUGE ethical rules - they are not allowed to lie to you. And even worse given they reported you are both bonkers and thick. Their job if they thought you were emotionally unstable would have been to see if you needed support (probably in words of one syllable because ‘support’ is a tough concept for a moron who is so stupid she can’t understand bariatric surgery). Struth, this makes my blood boil. (I have a PhD in Psychology - I no longer work in the field, but used to. They have behaved disgracefully.) By the way, given your low IQ, I was wondering who is the bright person you ask to write your quick witted, wise and warm posts for you?? 🤣😂

Waking up after sugery
Frustr8 replied to baribetty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess after my fractured humerus repair in 2010 I woke up and asked if anyone thought to feed the Jack***. we live in a city of 19000 and have no farm animals. I woke up from my gall bladder removal giggling, still don't know why, that surgeon was definitely not that entertaining. I can hardly wait to see what I come up with after bariatric surgery. I am the type to wake up singing or something weird like that.😜👉👈 -
I was peacefully re'setting up My Fitness Pal this AM when my son brought in our mail. Those of you who have been following my progress toward my RnY surgery know my path has had ups and downs, twists and hairpin turns like an amusement park roller coaster. The mail contained a bill from the psychological center I had,an evaluation at last December. Yes the self-same one that stabbed me in the back. I went there, they were an independent consulting place not part of former hospital and its bariatric center. Went in there, cheerfully naive about those people. Mamma always taught me that if you were nice to people, they are always nice back. I asked my son, of adult age, to accompany me. Since the deaths of his brother in 2008 and his father in 2012 we routinely attend each other's appointments. Also, I had never been to this place before, I may not show it on Bariatric Pal, but in real life I am rather shy. So you could also call my son my "security blanket." Completed partially on tablet, partially verbally 300+ questions, varying from " have you ever hurt an animal?" through " did you hate your parents & which one more" to "have you always had a satisfying sex life?" Yeah things I could see no relationship to bariatric surgery, but I still answered all of them to the best of my ability and factually. At the end of this session, the female psychologist shook my hand, told me everything was perfect, I had passed all facets properally, shook my hand and wished me Well with my future. Surgery. My son remembers everything as I do. Even remarked after we,left Mom, you did great! Aren't you glad that's over?" So I continued with the rest of my prerequirements, finished them the 16th of January and waited to be notified of my surgery date. I was notified on February 20th I had not passed this psych eval., she stated I was psychologically and emotionally unstable and lacked the mental capabilities to understand bariatric surgery. So this surgeon and his 2 partners declined to perform surgery based on this. Today I received a bill from these people. after insurance they feel I should send them cash money. Why should I pay this group of 2 faced double dealers a penny of my Social Security? They have been paid already by insurance, had I been as sneaky as them I would have instucted insurance not to. It is a smallish amount of money but it is the principle of the thing! What do YOU think?

Indeed, currently I am experiencing weight loss from either the Metformin I was prescribed for my elevated insulin levels, or from following the diet work-up set forth by my bariatric dietician... maybe a combination of both. As of this morning, I am sitting at 304lbs, down 21lbs since I started this journey. I am told that if I lose enough weight, I may not need to be on the pre-op liquid diet very long. It will be decided the closer I get to the end of "the 6 month march." Per insurance, I need 5-more visits with my doctor before Sept 4 (end of 180 day evaluation). My next scheduled visit is on Star Wars Day "May The 4th" Thank you so much for thinking of me and asking for an update, I appreciate you very much.

Hello, So, I had bariatric surgery in late August and since November, I've been stalled in my weight loss at roughly 130 kg. Nothing I do seems to work. I've been keeping meticulous tabs on my water and nutritional intake, I've been working out every day, I've had gallbladder surgery (so I can't even have fatty foods without getting sick), my surgeon put my on phentermine and I still haven't been able to break this stall. Does anyone know how I can break this stall? I've been trying everything and so far, nothing seems to work.

And @GotProlactinoma I am very happy to know you. I yearn for and am working towards the day when i am no longer morbidly obese. If I end up in the overweight ranking where my personal weight goal will still put me, I will still be grateful for the chance bariatric surgery will give me, I will use my tool,to the good of ME. And bottom line that is who I'm working for, although my family may reap some benefits, the surgery is still mine.😝👍

In non bariatric surgeries in the past I had to bathe with Hibiclens Soap, it is similar to what doctors use to scrub in with. just don't let it touch your private parts as it burns like hades.. LOL.

How do you get through the pre op Liquid Diet?
MIZ60 replied to Kadidy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just finishing day #10 of the preop diet and surprisingly it has been fairly easy. I start the day with 20 ounces water then I drink about 40 oz coffee with Spenda and fat free half and half. I use a Yeti tumbler so easy to keep track. Then I drink one shake (Premier Protein). I then have about 32 ounces water over the next few hours. I have a second shake and some dill pickles (allowed per my bariatric center at Baylor Scott & White) about 4 then about 1/2 a bottle of PowerAde Zero. I eat my allowed meal (3 ounces protein) with 1-2 cups vegetables about 7. For dessert, a couple of sugar free popsicles and/or jello. Now sitting here enjoying some Crystal Light. I sometimes heat up a chocolate shake to drink before bed. I am shocked that I really haven't felt extremely hungry to this point and have lost almost 12 pounds. Good luck to you!! -
I am scheduled for June and have my endoscopy coming up. I am super worried about them finding ulcers or something and me being postponed. Anyone have experience with this? I am 30 so I don't know if that will be an issue. Also I am wondering what your primary care doctor had to do for your surgeon? My surgeon gave me a form requesting a pre op assessment. The surgeon is doing blood work etc. What will my PCP have to do? How involved will they have to be? Lastly, I am using Amerihealth Caritas (medicaid) for my surgery. I am using it before I return to work. Anyone have experience with this insurance? Thank you all! Love bariatric pal!!!

once upon a time ago on BP I was, someone mistook my helpfulness as an intrusion. Long time ago, I've moved on, doesn't happen often , if it did Alex the head guy on Bariatric Pal wouldn't allow,it. He is our founder and I have up most respect for his staff and Him. This is by far the best network around, I've been on a few others but they were not,ran as nice or contained as nice a people.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
Frustr8 replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Goal weight- the amount you or your doctor feel would be best for you Surgery weight- like is says, how much, you weighed,on hospital scales immediately, prior to surgery Current weight-how much you weigh when you made this post High weight- the most you weighed at the start of your journey. in my case it was OMG I can't weigh THAT much, but I did and it was the final push into Bariatrics ---I promised myself I will NEVER weigh THAT MUCH AGAIN. It didn't look good, feel good 😟and wasn't good for me😦 So now I'm on the downward match toward a healthier more fit, life. -
I am entering @jessgnc's words into the journal of my Bariatric Journey, she summed up well what I was thinking. Thank you Jess!😝

And on Bariatric Pal,whether you are pre or post- surg. Hopefully never because of sleeve vs. bypass, because there are always room for everybody on here.
