    Determining Goal Weight

I’m sure that the psychologist wanted to make sure that you don’t have unrealistic expectations for the surgery because some people don’t even get out of the overweight category but they still reduce alot of their comorbidities by getting out of the obese BMI. That being said, many people reach even the lower end of normal BMI. My doctor didn’t give me a goal weight and I set a few for myself. The first being a weight where I at least feel good enough to go out and do things, the second is the top of a normal BMI and the third is lower. I am almost to the second and am starting to think that my body might be happy here since I am no longer losing. I can probably add more exercise and reach the second but may not ever reach the third.

    Determining Goal Weight

Others can suggest goals but … it’s your body and ultimately your goals. My surgeon didn’t give me a target either. Just shared stats on average weight loss for my procedure. I have two goals. One is how much weight I need to lose to be healthier and feel like I can move freely. Another is a lower weight that I used to be a while ago. As I get closer I’ll find out how achievable that second goal was and adjust as needed.
  3. I met with the psychologist for the first time on Friday. The very first thing he asked me was “what is your comfortable goal weight.” My current weight is 223, BMI of 38. A perfect BMI is 20 with a weight of 120 lbs (which was my weight before I had kids). I told him my comfortable goal weight is 140 lbs. He said that is too low and I should set my goal to a reasonable weight of 155 lbs. It kinda bugged me afterwards because he is a therapist, not a surgeon or dietitian. When I met with the surgeon on Monday, he didn’t mention a goal weight, but I figured HE would decide on my goal weight when I have the pre-surgery visit (no surgery date yet). Who decided on your goal weight?

NEW - Anthem Blue Cross Question

I have BCBS and had to have my doctor provides notes from my visits over the past 6 months showing that she talked with me about diet and exercise. It also had to include my weight. All but one of my visits were virtual (I saw her every 3 months for diabetes) and they accepted the notes. Think she also wrote a letter.
  5. I had a sleeve back in 2015. I lost 100 pounds. I've gained between 25 to 30 pounds through the years. I have several health issues, one being burning mouth syndrome. Nothing tastes good and I'm nauseated off and on during the day. this past year, my parents have declined so I care for them as well as maintaining my own family. I'm extremely overwhelmed with managing everything and the traveling . I need to get back on the straight and narrow. just not sure how at the moment. I'm tired. Thanks for listening.
  6. I am just starting the process at 48 years old. I tried when i was in my late 20's, fought hard, got an approval and then chicken out as my babies were all little. Now here I am again. I don't have my consult until March so i wanted to start thinking ahead. Regarding Anthem Blue Cross, am I going to have a documented supervised weight loss plan on record or can i just document my attempts at diets like 'keto';etc? If i do have to document, is doing Weight Watchers through the App sufficient? Any advice anyone can give me is great. My BMI is 59.

COMPLETELY fallen off the wagon :(

This TOTALLY happened to me! The good news is that the wagon is still there. You’re WORTH it!!!! Don’t give up. Stop/drop/roll - call your dietician immediately! 🙂. I waited 3 months because I was embarrassed. Had my 1 year surgery follow up. Was so nervous - I put myself in a total panic and broke down crying. The surgeon kindly laughed and was like you LOST 97 Pounds - that’s 77.8% of your EWL. He explained that EWL is the Excess Weight Loss. Ask for your percentage. He said that as a surgeon, they anticipate/ hope that in 18 months you lose 75%. The dietician came in who I’ve been in amazing contact with until I stalled. I was embarrassed. I haven’t lost a pound in 3 months. We talked - came up with a solution and it’s working. They see this ALL the time. It’s not a personal failure. They will help if you ask- I promise. You’ve got this!!!!! You’re amazing and so is your body!!!! Everyone’s journey is different. Have you heard of Unjury? They have an amazing viritual support group and bring in incredible professionals to chat about stuff like this. register for the Wednesday nights (you can do both - but Wednesday night is for post op) - https://unjury.com/newsletters/join-the-best-support-group-now-for-best-results/ You’ll see me there - Christina B. Say ‘hi’- you’ll feel so loved and supported. You’re not alone in this!
  8. The Harvard Biggest Loser study pretty much confirmed this: whenever you fight your body, it becomes more efficient at using calories, lowering your caloric need to maintain your weight. AKA: ignore hunger at your own risk. I'd love to see some data on the people that maintain long-term (like 10+ years). I bet they've been diligent at keeping their weight stable - not fighting it down. If you asked me to choose between being 20 lbs heavier than I am now, but then be guaranteed to keep that forever, or stay here just below 200 lbs but with a big task of transitioning into maintenance ahead, I'd take the 20 lbs any day. I feel pretty in sync with my mental and physical side of all this, I'm just so mindful of not putting myself on the path to regain, which I think starts with the mental prison that ignoring hunger is.
  9. Best of luck to you. I really would like to know all about this. I’m considering the same thing. My vsg was done in 2015. I have since gained all my weight back. I’m currently on Ozempic. I’m taking it off slowly. But only 20 pounds lost so far. I inquired about the revision and am just nervous. Would love to hear all about it and what it intails as far as a hospital stay. Care afterwards and etc.
  10. Thank you for this post, and for the replies! So timely. Congrats on the 65 pounds! I’ve lost about 80% of the excess weight (BMI now 27), and I’m wondering if this is the end of the line. Could I do more exercise, and eat even better? Yes and yes. Do I want to find sustainable practices for the rest of my life, and be content (not neurotic about food and exercise)? Yes also. I like what mini gastric bypass dude said, try something new and see how your body responds. However, it would need to be something that you could do from here on out, in order to maintain. I think being a bit on the heavier side is better than going up and down?
  11. Welcome & congratulations on your surgery. Never be afraid to ask for help. This process is not always easy. Many hiccups & roadblocks along the way as we work through the crap that lead us to being overweight. We don’t talk about the importance of doing the head work for nothing 🙂 Were you recommended a therapist as part or your pre surgery program? If not ask your team for a recommendation to someone who specialise in eating disorders & bariatric patients. You may find working with a therapist about your cravings & night eating very helpful. There are many people on this forum who have benefitted from working through their food obsessions etc. with therapy to understand what’s drinking them to eat & finding strategies to manage those drives. Good luck & congratulations on your weight loss so far. It’s just the beginning.
  12. I have spent so much money on personal trainers. From local to private gyms where the head trainer was a former olympian. My experience of it was all over the place. What stuck with me was the weight training, bought 10kg dumbells to use at home to keep up my strengh. The funnest was the trainer who warmed to me, he advised and talked to me like a friend. He use to do these vulcan death grips on me because my shoulders were so tense and no joke I would squeal because it hurt!
  13. Hello all, I am new to this group. I had Gastric sleeve done 11/22/2021. This was strongly recommended by my pulmonologist who says my pulmonary hypertension, CHF, and chronic hypoxic respiratory failure are all due to my weight. I’ve lost 20lbs since surgery date which I feel like is very slow. I am struggling with my obsession of food. Trying to maintain healthy diet for the most part (it’s hard sometimes when we eat out). I’m exercising 3 times a week for 1 1/2 hours at a time (I’m on oxygen and have to go to rehab place where they can measure my oxygen levels). I also struggle with night eating which causes me a lot of stress (would love to hear if anyone else struggles with this). Glad I found this group and excited to connect with others here on this forum. p.s. my surgeon is Vinay Goyal of Lubbock but his name doesn’t appear in list of surgeons.

COMPLETELY fallen off the wagon :(

Been there, done that. YES you can reset your pouch by going back to basics in terms of food portions, tracking, protein, water, and exercise. YES it can be done. I just lost 25 pounds since October after gaining weight during COVID. Don't be like me, though, because I skipped an appt with my surgeon and nutritionist because I was embarrassed about the weight gain and didn't want them to see me. I should have gone anyway. That's what they're there for, to help and guide us. So please go to your upcoming appt and just accept any advice they give.
  15. Hi everyone. I had my roux May 2021, I am at goal weight, 90lbs lost. I have stomach pain after every meal and sometimes just drinking water. I take vitamins daily, and get at least 40 g of protein down and about 32oz of water. I can't get past that. The pain is like I'm hungry, yet feel nauseous after I eat and gets worse as the day goes on. My stomach is also very loud and bubbly, I can feel it moving sometimes. I also get calf pain and headaches. I have tried taking prilosec to see if it is acid related, doesnt seem to make a difference. I am without insurance right now, so kinda trying to troubleshoot on my own. Any insight would be great. Thank you.
  16. I'm doing good still! I over shot my weight loss goal of 140 pounds all the way to 125 but have regained those 15 pounds in the last 3 years. I dont want to get back down just stay the weight I am. I pretty much let myself eat whatever I want, just try to stick to the rules of no snacking, no drinking while eating and no drinking 30 minutes after eating.

Well at least you realized you need to do something before you gained weight. You can turn this around and start losing again.

COMPLETELY fallen off the wagon :(

This has happened to others. Part of the human condition is that we often fail. You should not feel shame that you haven't lost more weight. Shame related to weight is counter productive. The pouch reset, of course, is nonsense. It want's people to think that the draconian diet they put you on for weeks or months has a purpose. You don't consume calories and lose weight? Amazing stuff there. So they try to reframe it as breaking & building new habits. You can do that without the draconian measures, probably better if you're not lying to yourself about what you're doing. Now down to the important issue: How do you get back on track? Get back on track. Think of this as a marathon. You've run a few miles then fall. What do you do? Do you get up and go back to the beginning, and start again? Do you go through your pre-race rituals? No. You get back up run. You don't warm up again, you don't strip down and redress? No. You just get up and get going. One foot in front of the other. So, you figured out you fell. Get up and get going again. Good Luck, Tek
  19. I haven't been on in quite a while... My surgery was in March 2021. I have since lost almost 90lbs, but my weightloss has completely stalled. I've been in the low 270s for months. And I do know why. I have essentially stopped following all recommended healthy eating habits and work regimens. I've also noticed that I can consume more in one sitting than I was able to do just a few weeks ago. I'm nervous. My annual follow-up is in about a month+ and I am ashamed of the fact that I haven't lost any additional weight since I was last there 6 months prior. Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do to get back on target? Has anyone ever done a successful "pouch reset"? I'm currently maintaining my weight, but I know it's only a matter of time before I start gaining.
  20. Hi Jerald, thanks for reading all that I hope you'll get over COVID and back to good health soon. So a few things on this. First of all, there can be numerous reasons for making a shorter bypass (see below), and a 90 cm BPL is still longer than many RNY'ers bilio-pancreatic limb bypass (it turns out their afferent limb still absorbs calories). However, while the RNY ends up being almost only a restrictive surgery, the MGB remains a malabsorptive surgery. Most MGBers can eat all kinds of food at reasonable volume pretty quickly. So if we have a malabsorptive procedure, more malabsorption is better, right? Well, generally it's not the malabsorption that helps us. Sure, it's nice to not absorb 300-400 calories or whatever, but it's primarily the fact that the food gets to the lower intestine really fast that makes us lose weight. You know that feeling of 'oh man I had a big meal' you get pretty much immediately after eating anything a little heavier? At least many MGB'ers describe this as tool #1. Why a shorter bypass? Some surgeons want to make sure older patients don't get malnourished (I don't know how old you are). Some surgeons believe a shorter bypass is almost as effective (again, the difference between 150 cm and 250 cm in the studies is pretty small in terms of weight loss. It's the fact that there's a bypass that helps). What if it is too short? Well, then enjoy you had a surgery that's easily revisable. It shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes in general anesthesia to move your connection further down. Your weight loss seems fine, btw! But if you need to, the inventor of MGB, Dr Rutledge, is very responsive on Facebook and even does free consultations for MGBers as far as I've seen. He really is in it for the health and for the surgery. PROTEIN! Btw: really, really, really try to get that protein in. Especially with a surgery like ours. I also completely lost my appetite during COVID but 60g isn't a lot. Get some of the hot protein cocoa on the BariatricPal Store, the protein muffins, the quest protein chips, the oatmeal ... something. At any age over 40, you want to preserve as much muscle mass as humanly possible. Even a week of atrophy (wasting away muscle tissue) will measurably lower your burn rate. You will regret that later.
  21. I’m on day 5 post op. Everything seems to be going pretty well. My Dr has moved me to phase 2 eating, creamy soups, yogurts ith fruit flavor no pieces of fruit. Also soft boiled egg To go along with my protein shakes. I started my bariatric vitamins B12 dissolveable tablet, Calcium Citrate 1000mg chewable(not so great) and a multi that looks like a starburst candy!!!! So far I have been walking abouT 1.5-2 miles each morning( not today 12in snow) I find it easier to drink while on my walk rather than sitting down. I have to say that I am not hungry at all. I know I have to eat which I am doing getting in 60-80g protein and 64 oz liquids. It’s just weird that I’m not looking to graze in the fridge!!!! Also I am keeping a food journal, times and how much and protein taken in and am also using Baritastic app to track weight and goals and food as well. Might be a little over kill the journal but for now I seem to like it. Just wanted to share my first week with everyone because I’m proud of the work I’m doing!!!!

I've Started Doing Workouts with a Personal Trainer

I used a personal trainer at a gym 10 years ago, the last time I got close to the weight I am now. Of course, that was before I had surgery. I don't remember for sure, but a probably did 2 or 3 dozen sessions. It definitely made me feel better. I've been thinking about doing it again. As I near the supposedly ideal BMI of 25, I notice that my legs and especially my arms are looking pretty scrawny. I also have some wrinkly skin on my arms and legs that could really benefit from adding back some muscle mass. (Of course, at 68, I'm a certified Old Guy, so maybe the wrinkles are par for the course, but they weren't there when I was bulked up with fat. ) And though I look good in clothes, I still have a couple fat places that could really look a lot better when I'm standing shirtless in front of the mirror to shave. What I've been wondering is whether I need to find somebody who has experience with bariatric surgery patients, and if so, how to find such a person whom I could afford.

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

We have the same surgery date I got VSG how are you doing with weight loss still? I’ve been super careful and the loss is slow but I’m down 32 pounds only 70 more to go (only lol feels like forever in front of me still)
  24. I've been doing really good, 90 minutes a day of cardio, since Jan 1st but decided that I needed to incorporate some weight lifting and strength training into my daily routine. My gym membership is free under Silver Sneakers, so I don't pay for it and they have trainers that you can pay. I've never used a trainer before, but I decided to give it a try. It's $30 for a 30-minute session if you sign up for 12 sessions, so I did. The first session was free to get to know the trainer, see if you got along, describe your goals, set a plan, etc. I've done 3 workouts with her so far and it's WONDERFUL! Not only does she show me how to properly use the dumbbells, barbells, and cable machines, but she encourages and supports me and directs me what to do. She mixes it up so I'm not doing the same muscle group all the time or get bored with the same routine. I don't know how long I can afford it but I like it for at least these 12 sessions. I'm doing them 3x/week. Maybe I can do 1x/week for the next month and then after that just incorporate everything I've learned and do the exercises myself. Have you ever used a personal trainer? How'd you like that?
  25. Here's an update. I started on Weight Watchers Personal Points (WW) on December 20th. I lost 5 pounds in the first 3 weeks, which was slow but acceptable and I understood that I wouldn't bet a huge initial loss because I had already just lost 25 pounds on another eating plan. Then for the last 2-3 weeks I've been in a stall. I had forgotten all about stalls. Turns out that between adding 90 minutes of cardio every day since Jan 1st and only eating my Daily WW Points (25 points, about 1000 calories) I wasn't eating enough. Once I started adding in the extra allowed Weekly points the scale started moving again. So at this point I'm still happy with the WW program and think it's do-able and going to work for me. Slow and steady wins the race. I'd like to lose 20 pounds but I'm not setting a goal date for that. I'll get there when I get there and reward myself along the way for my consistency in food tracking, water intake, and exercise.
