    A Bunch Of Questions...

If you haven't seen it, there's an entire forum here dedicated to band -> sleeve revisions. Lots and lots of us have been down that path. My best answers below in blue.

    I'm Beat...

Jill, so sorry for all the stress and anxiety this has placed on you. I hope you are able to get this resolved before the end of the year. Some people are just very sensitive to the band and it causes problems for them. My surgeon no longer places them and has started doing the sleeve on everyone due to problems like yours. He says he has more patients fail than succeed. I was lucky, the band has worked for me,. Good luck on your revision.

    I'm Beat...

Back to the WLS for the next installment of Jill's endless problems with the band. My appointment was scheduled for 1:00pm and it's about an hour drive. As usual, but for coffee, there isn't any thing I'm going to get down before 10:00am at the earliest. So I planned to just skip eating as it takes me 40+ minutes to work down a Yoplait and some oatmeal. Around 11:00am my husband asked me if I'd make him a sandwich. While making said sandwich I ate one single slice of deli ham and was immediately blocked. Didn't feel like I was going to throw up, it was just 'there'...until I got in the car. About half way to the doctor's office I started sliming and feeling like maybe I should pull over but I made it, checked in, went to the restroom and got sick. All it produced was a tiny piece of ham. Still felt blocked an hour later leaving the doctor's office and ended up throwing up over and over in my car on I-87. Thank God I have a plastic waste basket in my car. Now that's ironic considering I'd made it for a whole week without an episode and once again convinced myself it must just be in my head! What did the WLS have to say? It's gotta come out. While it's comforting to know the band failed me and not the other way around, having my WLS announce that I need to start planning my revision surgery pronto because he "knows" most patients who have their band removed, "blow up" just adds to the anxiety. So much for the band allowing me to finally stop focusing on food, my weight etc. Let's stir in the fact that I've got to try to find the time before the end of the year it get this done for fear that with the onslaught of Obama-Care I won't have coverage. It funny how I didn't really notice what poor nutrition does as prior to the attempted repair surgery the problems had slowly built up. I'm a pretty busy person and had just chalked up being tired to my schedule, menopause etc. In the month where I was able to eat more normally and a wider range of foods, I had more energy, got more done and didn't need to nap everyday just to get up the energy to finish chores. Not to sound vain, but I had people telling me how well I looked - which I found to be odd - just how bad was I looking!?! My hair was glossy again and my nails grew. Since the return of the problems my hairbrush looks like a small kitten and my nails are breaking and splitting and once again I'm hearing, "You look tired". And so I am - nap time for Jill!
  4. My surgery group does a lot of WLS's each month and our pre op supervised visits were in a group setting of about 10 - 12 patients (we would individually see the Dr each time, but nutrition was in group). It seemed as though we were all there because it was required for our medical insurance authorization. Some of us for 6 monthly visits while others only required 3. Some of these patients were revisions and they were still required to do it. You may get away with not having to go if you pay out of pocket, but I don't see how they would be able to get around insurance requirements, my Dr office was pretty clear on this. I know it's a pain to wait this long, but it really does help you prepare for this life change and if you can put up with all of the pre op requirements you are obviously dedicated to it. best of luck.

    New SIPS Sleeve Procedure

Dr Enochs is also my doctor I am having SIPS or SADI-S Monday 3/16/2015 I had RNY 7/11/2014 So this will be a revision for me. I am currently down almost 97lbs so far with the RNY, but I am having complications with ulcers and hernias. How are you doing Mojo56?
  6. If I were starting over, I think I would choose the gastric sleeve. It has a quicker weight loss than the band, but without the malabsortive issues of bypass and it has less followup requirements than the band. But let me tell you my history and you decide what is best for you. I just got my second band put in 7 days ago (the first had a leak and my insurance, after much discussion, would only pay to replace what I had - a band) If I wanted to switch to a sleeve as recommended by my MD, I would have to self pay. That said, I understand that some insurance companies are beginning to pay for revision surgery on bands to sleeves or bypass, so check and see what your insurance company will cover down the road. I feel great just a week after surgery and I feel restriction for the first time and I am determined to make this work. I had been successful with my first band by losing 80# before regaining 30# over the last year. I am determined to get a net weight loss of 100#. Check back in in six months and see if I have made it yet. Attitude goes a long way!
  7. Hello all, just looking for some help and encouragement. I was banded May 2005 and am facing revision surgery on July 15. I have had two slips in the last year so I am having to have a new band put in. I had no issues at all the first 2 yrs of being banded and lost 95lbs. I have slowly started gaining and wish to start over and get on the right track with a band that will stay in place. Does anyone know much about the AP band? That is what I will get this time. Thanks. Relxnthsun
  8. You keep making me feel better about my decision to go with Dr. Garcia to do my revision! I'm scared and excited! To the OP I have heard nothing but great things about Dr. Garcia ????!

    So so angry!!!!!

Awwwww man. I’ve never responded to your posts about your acid reflux issues, but I’ve read them and I was really, really hoping the revision would immediately bring you some relief. It stinks that it still seems to be a problem, but it’s early, right? Maybe a little time? I hope something works for you!

    Protein Shakes

Muscle milk is delicious. I've never bought it in a powder though. I've had the chocolate ready made that I bought at costco and it's so yummy. I am going to look for this at GNC when I go out of town as we don't have a GNC here. I'm going to be on liquids again after my revision surgery.
  13. Personally, I went with the sleeve because I did not like the idea of my intestines being re routed. Also, from what I read, there seems to be less complications, less need for vitamins long term, less issues with malabsorbtion and dumping. Also, with the sleeve, you can be revised to the by pass, or Dudial Switch at a later time if you feel it is not effective enough. I would discuss and research the pros and cons of both surgeries, and see what your surgeon suggests and why, but I am pretty sure most all of us here will be just a little more biased toward the sleeve Good luck on your journey whatever you choose!
  14. I had the lapband removed in Sept. I am going to get the sleeve. I have talked with 2 surgeons . One uses a 36 bougie and the other uses a 32 bougie and over sews. I am concerned about the differences. Does anyone have an opinion on this? As far as weightloss, will it be harder with a 36 bougie. I have about 50 pounds to lose. Not sure what to do.
  15. Thank you very much for posting this info! I found COVID definitely had a major impact on my weight loss program. I was supposed to attend 10 education classes. Only got to do 2 of them before the classes were canceled for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, being in the revision boat, I still had a lot of the knowledge from the first go-round. And my dietician visit was a 20 minute phone call where I pretty much just confirmed I was still on the original diet plan they dictated for me and that it was working as I was losing weight every week. So no changes were really needed. There's been a lot of other COVID related changes to my post-op plan that I'm finding annoying, but ultimately it is what it is and I'm making the best of it.

Daily carb intake for post ops

Im a post op and have to have a revision thanks to the military docs that did my surgery. I did 30 or less prior to moving to Kansas. The nutritionist here thinks im crazy. She says the brain and body can't function on that amount. I want to be successful and lose my regain and keep it off. Thanks for helping.
  18. My first appt I was going for the Lap Band and the nurse there warned me not to, she said there are alot issues with the band, slippage, infections etc. and 9 out of 10 patients come back wanting the sleeve. So I changed my mind and I am glad I did. I have had absolutely no issues with the sleeve. Good Luck with your revision QDH!
  19. I had revision surgery done October 24. I'm fortunate to have had it done in one shot!! But it was the worst pain of my life, lots of scar tissue around the band. However if I had to do it again, I most definitely would!! Best decision I ever made!! 42 lbs. gone so far!!
  20. I would say that your experience sounds like a slip. I experienced a slip about a year ago. Vomiting, couldn't keep food down, vomiting blood, reflux at night... As the other posters said...do get back to your surgeon. I had revision surgery and have been trouble free for a year.

    Any July Sleevers Yet?

I will having a lap band to sleeve revision done by Dr Almanza on July 2. Counting the days until I can get this band out of me.
  22. Fabulous forties ladies! I am one of them! I am 41. I plan on shedding this extra weight with revision to bypass in November. And hopefully reach my goal weight by summer time next year. I keep hoping that I will get to my original weight, but 6 pounds 11 ounces is not realistic hehehe. All joking aside, let's face it its so much harder to lose weight in our 40"s than it was whenever we were 20. With our WLS tools, we can all reach our goals and a healthier life:)
  23. I came in for a band to sleeve revision but due to some erosion he found he felt it was safer to do 2 surgeries. I appreciate his concern but I am so disappointed. I don't know if I will be able to afford another surgery.

    No band for me today

Sorry to hear . My doc removed my band in March and refuses to do the revision because he wants the stomach to heal. Fortunately, my insurance and doctor cleared me for the sleeve exactly 11 weeks after the removal. Sleeved now!

    Pain question

I never got the side pain but I was a band to bypass revision so I got the center of the belly pain really bad because they had to pry the port out. I took the lortab faithfully every four hours to keep the pain under control. When I tried to go without it to early on I paid for it.
