Am I eating enough?
MerryMarie replied to graziellabs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Its normal. Your stomach is still healing. By the time you get to about 6-8 weeks out you'll think you're eating a ton and by a ton I mean 1/2 cup at a time. Good luck! -
HEY ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HAVE AETNA INSURANCE? I HAVE A GENERAL QUESTION. WHEN YOU WERE APPROVED DID THEY SEND YOU A LETTER TO YOUR HOUSE LETTING YOU KNOW? THE REASON I ASK IS BECAUSE I HAD JUMPED THROUGH ALL OF THE HOOPS ON JUNE 7TH. MY SURGEONS INSURANCE COORDINATOR SAID SHE WOULD SEND IN MY CASE TO MY INSURANCE ON JUNE 14TH. TODAY HAS BEEN 10 BUSINESS DAYS AND I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING. I CALLED THE SURGEONS OFFICE BUT THE INSURANCE GIRL IS ON VACATION THIS WEEK AND I HAVE THIS SINKING FEELING THAT SHE HASN'T EVEN SENT IT IN- AND SHE WONT COME BACK UNTIL JULY 5TH!!

Yes, they mail a letter to your home and send a cc to your doctors office. They will usually also call your surgeons office to let them know so they can start with the scheduling etc. I had to wait almost two full weeks to get my response from Aetna. I was already scheduled by the time the letter made it to my home though. I would ask to talk to someone else in the office to see if they have heard anything yet on your case.

Okay here's a paleo version of Shepherd's pie made with mashed cauliflower. Pictures & nutritional facts at: http://sleevers.wordpress.com/2013/11/09/paleo-low-carb-shepherds-pie/ My older son has always loved shepherd’s pie. When he was little, he’d sit on the kitchen counter and watch me make it for him. So one day, when he was about 3, I asked him how Mummy made shepherd’s pie. He thought for a bit, and then said “First you catch a shepherd and then you kill him!” Boys. Such ghouls. So I decided to try a paleo, low-carb version, which meant substituting mashed cauliflower for the potatoes. Technically this is a cottage pie, since I used ground beef. Makes 2 meals for 2 sleevers. Ingredients For the Topping: 8 oz bag of cauliflower florets, either fresh or frozen 1 tsp coconut oil/ghee salt and pepper to taste For the Pie: 1/2 lb ground beef 1/8 c chopped onion 3 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 1 tsp coconut oil/ghee 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 4 oz tomato sauce (can substitute 1 tbsp tomato paste) Salt & Pepper to taste 1 egg beaten Paprika Method Steam cauliflower in it’s bag for 5 mins in the microwave When done, put into bowl of food processor. Include all the water it generated as well. Add coconut oil, salt, and pepper and process until smooth and light. Meanwhile, heat the coconut oil in a pan until hot. Add onions and garlic. Prepare to inhale wonderful aromas and for your spouse, kid, and dog to walk in wondering what smells so good. Brown ground beef. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, & tomato sauce. Remove from heat and let it cool for 10 minutes. Beat the egg and mix into the meat mixture Spread in a pie plate or an 8-inch square pan that has been lightly sprayed. Spread meat in an even mixture. With a light hand, spread the pureed cauliflower. Rake gently with a tine to create peaks and valleys so it looks pretty when browned. Sprinkle with paprika Bake in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.

Is alcohol gone for good?
thisendisabeginning replied to hessekids's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have some questions relating to alcohol AND cigarettes. I don't want to sound alcoholic, but one of my ways of releasing stress is a night out drinking chatting with friends. I don't drink beer, but I drink coolers, cocktails or shooters. Coolers like Bicardi pineapple... Can I have like 3 coolers in one night once a month or something? :smile2: I am an occasional smoker, smoke once/twice a day, or none a day. When I drink alcohol I tend to smoke more, but I'm going to limit my drinking and going out after being banded, so I'll only drink about once a month (if that's allowed). Do i have to quit smoking? Is 3 coolers one night "allowed"? Did anyone go through the same thing? :frown: I'm having consultation with my surgeon May 1st this friday  If things go well, I'll be on Meditrim and get ready to get banded within the next 2, 3 weeks. -
Is alcohol gone for good?
talkalot1981 replied to hessekids's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc wanted me to quit smoking because it effects the healing process. He said nothing about it effecting the anesthesia. I have been put under anesthesia before and they didn't even ask me if I smoked, so I guess it wasn't a big deal. I actually decided to quit before I found out my surgeon wanted me to be 2 months smoke free. Only a week but I did quit on my own. The only reason I would say not to tell the surgeon is because esioulpy is wanting to be banded by the end of May. She can't if she has to be smoke free for 2 months. Some surgeons don't even require you 2 be smoke free. -
I am down 6.4 pounds in 9 days using a blend of essential oils that I named "Anti-Hunger". So far, so good! Able to completely resist the temptation of snacking. Loss of hunger is similar to being in the Honeymoon stage after RNY surgery. I am 29 months post-op RNY surgery and very near my bottom weight when I began this experiment. In a couple weeks if I find this experiment to be successful, I will post the formula on my updated webpage at Protein back into my diet (in the form of one large cup of hot [no sugar added] cocoa). This brought the weight loss to a dead crawl. Anyways this is good information since this experiment is just as much about weight stability as weight loss. I will now drop the hot cocoa and see if weight loss will ramp up again. [October 16] Since I dropped 1.6 pounds from yesterday. The weight loss ramped up surprisingly quick. Now here is the good news! I have now broken through my lowest weight barrier after surgery. It gives hope to those that are trying to meet a weight goal and can’t just quite seem to be able to get there. [October 17] I dropped 0.2 pounds from yesterday.

8 months out and still vomiting
magpie26 replied to Fibro Queen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm only 6.5 weeks and I'm super nauseous. Oh God, I hope it doesn't last 8 months! Mine doesn't happen when eating, it's just all the time off and on unpredictable. I hate it. I don't vomit much though -
I was banded 3/5 and had my first fill a few weeks prior. I was also quite nervous, but it was quite easy. My MD did not use a local anesthesia. I did not look at the needle, so I don't know how big it was, but it did not hurt at all. It took him a little bit to get access to the port, but it was done before I even realized it. It was an odd feeling for a minute or two. I drank some water and that was it. I was on clear liquids for 3 meals after the fill - one meal of mushies then onto a regular diet. I wish that I had some restriction post first fill, but it is ok - I am one step closer. Second fill is tomorrow - I cannot wait. Good Luck!
-
I've had three fills and go for my fourth in four days. My doctor has me on the table, I have to do a crunch while he circles the port with a pen for a guide, inserts the needle (no numbing -- I'm getting a needle either way) and inserts the saline. My port is a little tilted, so my third fill was a little more involved than the first two, but I'll remember to tell him this Thursday for my fill that my port is tilted. I'm so ready to keep the fills moving because I feel nothing resembling restriction. Though, I did have a hard time eating rice yesterday. Very exciting! Heh. Every time I go for a fill, I make my next appointment on the spot, four weeks to the minute!

It can be really hard to turn things round when you're iin a rut. I find it easier to focus first on exercise, doing extra, upping intensity, even starting a new program/focus (i cycle around between slow steady running, interval training, curcuit training to prevent boredom and plateaus) and then the eating follows. It really only takes one or two good days to get you back on track and srrong enough to keep going. I'm not a big one for "diets" but it can also really help just to follow a program - like a week of eating that you get in the Weight Watchers magazine or similar. Personally, I always called up for a week or two of Lite n Easy which is a home delivered calorie controlled plan we have here. Just take away the guesswork and temptation and get with it, and you know you'll get results. After that I was always fine to carry on on my own. These slumps hit all of us from time to time.

Ever feel like you'll never get there?
pear425 replied to GG'sArtsMom's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Please don't worry. You aren't even six months out from surgery. You will lose more weight. Everyone loses at a different pace and stalls are common. Just keep following your doctor and nut instructions and you will be just fine. -

Encouragement for stalls
labwalker replied to Ginger Snaps's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've stalled for three months at a time. I played head games trying to decide whether I needed a fill or not... having the fill usually got me moving rapidly in the right direction. For me, it was ticking to the diet, exercising daily, and making sure I did the three month follow visits to my doctor's office. -
Ok, so I finally hit the dreaded stall after 18 weeks post op. I have lost a great deal and am feeling really good about where I am but this is where I was afraid I would get stuck. I am now at the lowest weight I reached when killing myself to diet and exercise about 2 years ago. I know that my goal is 110 and it is achievable given that I am 5' tall and I know I have lots of flab on the lower half to lose. Seems like I am experiencing more restriction these days and pretty much don't care to eat so I am hoping that maybe I need to be much more deliberate with my Protein as I have been in the past. I would really like to be at goal by Christmas. I am also going to start working out more (right now only going once a week). I am happy that I am not gaining! But then again, not sure how I could with the little amount that I eat. Very happy with my sleeve, just need to get motivated to work this to my advantage now and actually see my weight get to my goal and stay there!

Two weeks post op today and I have had some severe heartburn that comes and goes, but seems to be getting a little better with time. My surgeon recommended that I just continue with the Omeprazole for now.

When did your hair grow back?
Djmohr replied to gpmed's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had massive hair loss that began almost right away, but got really bad starting in month 4 and continued until my weight loss slowed way down which was month 12. It started growing back as quickly as it started coming out so while I was losing it was coming in. My hair is now coming in everywhere but it has changed significantly. The texture is much thicker, coarse, curly and even a bit frizzy. I spoke with several doctors while I was going through this and everyone told me my hair would stop or slow down when my weight loss slowed down. Right around 12 months my weight slowed to a crawl which scared me because I still had more to lose but that is the point where you really have to work harder to continue losing. I am still losing but about 3-5 lbs per month and I am 3lbs from my ideal weight. -
Well, I was going in on the 28th. But, due to a work conflict on my wife's part, we had to bump it a couple of weeks to October 12th. Not a big deal, but I still spent the better part of a couple of hours seeing if I could work out a plan to keep the 28th (drive myself, wait around the lobby for my wife to pick me up a few hours, etc). I did, however, get word from my insurance that I was approved! We were ready to go self pay if need be, but this is better. Last time, when my wife had her bypass, the hospital billed $125K for just it's part (a pre planned procedure with a two day stay and no complications. 800 (x 2) dollar morphine!!!), of which Anthem disallowed 80% or so. I wasn't looking forward to dealing with the hospital on my own without the insurance company to back me up. I know it is all a shell game between providers and insurers, but geez. My wife had an emergency gall bladder removal with an ER visit and a two day stay at a different hospital earlier last year was $35K total. I went to my one insurance required support group meeting last week. Interesting, that of 30+ people in the group, only myself and one other pre-op were going LAP-BAND®®®®. All the others , including all the post op, were sleeve or bypass. One other pre op explained she was fighting with insurance for the sleeve, though she had been approved for LAP-BAND®®®® or bypass. She was very against a foreign object in her body. She felt they all suffer from rejection and infection, no offense to the two of us going LAP-BAND®®®®. Different strokes. Cheers, Erick

Newbie having my VSG 12/20/10
Nikkeystar replied to Gina A.'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome Gina! I had VSG on 9/2/10 and I also had a history of dvt's and pe's. I had my filter placed about 1 week before surgery, everything went fine and i'm doing well. They went in about 3 weeks after my surgery to remove the filter but they we unable to retrieve it.......the dr said that it's fine to stay there the rest of my life actually. I'm okay with that because I feel like I have protection in case I ever get another clot in my legs I know that it wouldn't be able to travel to my lungs like before. I wish you luck with you up coming procedures and your weight loss. -
Newbie having my VSG 12/20/10
Gina A. replied to Gina A.'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you all for the kind and encouraging words! I am on day 3 of the dreaded protein pre-surg diet and I'm dealing better than I thought.. I don't love it, but, I'm doing it... -
Hi everyone. I wanted to introduce myself. I started my journey last July with my first appointment with my primary care doctor. He has been amazing and supportive and has given me no trouble at all regarding the many referrals I have asked for and the note he had to write for insurance. I just received word today that I am authorized through my insurance for the surgery and have been given a surgery date of 3/20/09. I have had a few bumps in the road along the way (knee surgery) but am feeling better and ready to have the surgery and begin my new life. I need to figure out how to put one of those ticker thingies on and will try to do in a bit. I have been checking in here occasionally and have learned a lot and am excited to share this journey with you all. I can't believe it's almost finally here. Yay!

Anyone Get A Horrible Taste On Pre Op Diet?
lee72 replied to thinkt2013's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
guess what? i got that same taste too. unfortanetly for me i still have it. it started with my pre op Fluid diet and now one week post op i still have it, even though it is less now. i will see my doctor monday and i will bring this up. my sister (not banded) said it's because my body was detoxing from all the gunk/junk in my insestines, yuck! i kinda believe her. when growing up i remember when i told my mom that i had a "tummy ache" she would say let me see you tounge, yeah castrol oil it was...lol :/ but i agree that lots of teeth and tounge brushing really helps!!! good luck to you and keep us posted!
