  1. This is very interesting and is a current issue that I have been battling for two years to have covered by my insurance company. I had lab-band done in 2013. Starting weight was 317 and got down to 222 pounds. However, I suffered from extreme acid reflux, causing me to sleep sitting up for three years. I was vomiting acid and sick every meal. When I spoke to my doctor about this, he immediately suggested conversion to VSG. While awaiting the approval for the VSG conversion, they made me do it in two parts. One surgery to remove the band, wait six months for the stomach to reshape itself, and then complete the VSG surgery. I gained 50 pounds back of my lost weight. I had the conversion done in December 2016. Everything went well. Acid was gone. However, I never felt restricted at all. I never really lost weight. Fast forward one year to 2017, and the acid returned. In 2019, after having severe complications from acid reflux and developing a nightly cough, I called my doctor only to find out that he had passed away. I decided to see an upper GI doctor who did an EGD and found me with Hernia, GERD, and Esophagus damage. He sent me to a surgeon specializing in throat cancer and bariatric issues. Submitted to have surgery was denied. We have been battling this for almost two years. I went this past week to another bariatric doctor familiar with my deceased doctor's work and also completed an EGD himself on me this past Monday. Same thing, Hernia, GERD, and now they believe I have Barretts Esophagus. They submitted to the insurance to repair and again denied. Insurance says these complications came from bariatric surgery and did not cover even if medically necessary; My new doctor is also a lawyer (go figure); he is completing a peer-to-peer next week to try to have them complete the repair one final time. If approved, I will only need to pay for the bypass conversion. So fingers crossed. I feel as if my insurance company would rather me die of esophagus cancer than keep me from dying from cancer. It is truly sad.
  2. Hey December folks! Just checking in to see how everyone is doing... As for me, weight loss seems to have slowed a bit, but is still progressing. I'm still finding it pretty hard to get protein and water in daily. I feel like its either one or the other, I just cant seem to nail both. Regardless, I'm now 45 days post op and 41 lbs down. Hopefully everyone is safe, doing great, and well on their weight loss journey!

    Food Before and After Photos

Hi! 😀 Long time no see everyone! I don't post much, but I had to chime in and agree with this. I'm up 20 lbs from my lowest weight. At first I was scared. I mean, we've all lost weight, just to gain it all back again, right? But then, as @ms.sss said, I realized that I'm in control of this. I could IF, count my calories, and drop weight, it was totally within my power. Then I had a second realization. Not all weight gain is bad! I objectively look better at the top of a healthy BMI, at the bottom of an overweight BMI. My face looks my youthful. My arms and inner thighs lost most of their crepey-ness. My breast are bigger. I have thicker thighs and hips, and a juicier butt. Long story short, I'm glad I didn't panic at my weight gain. I loved seeing that low 120's number on the scale. But I'm glad I got over that, because it's more important what I see in the mirror.

    January 2022 Surgery Buddies

Mine was 1/25. I had about the same regain during my days in the hospital & also confusion identifying different pains (muscular? gas? incisions? cut nerves? hunger? fullness?) From my perspective about a week 'ahead' of you I'd say don't sweat that 4lbs gain (it will come off precipitously) & that it's understandable to feel confused.
  5. Ladies, you probably already know this, but i’ll say it anyway for the benefit of anyone else reading this: being afraid does nothing for you, especially for something you have some sort of control over. You are prime examples of weight loss success and YOU did this yourselves. As we all know, weight doesn’t come back on by itself. Its the result of lifestyle choices given your current situation. Yeah, it may be a little more difficult to maintain a certain weight and require more effort than previously expensed as time goes on, but you already know how to do it (and are doing it presently). Don’t be afraid of doing what you’ve already been doing! ❤️ P.S. further, you may find that any further weight gained or lost is just fine with you and not worth the effort to change. P.P.S. Or you may just stay they same with no changes at all! Bottom line…being scared is a waste of time and energy that could be better utilized for funner stuff lol. But yeah, i know, easier said.
  6. Hello everyone. I had my VSG surgery on November 15, 2021 and I feel like I am at a stall and I'm looking for a gym buddy in my area San Antonio, TX. I feel awkward going to the gym on my own. I have no idea where to start and would appreciate having someone who knows what I am going through. I'd love to push you on with your weight loss goals and hopefully be able to push myself also in this weight loss journey. I see the before and after pictures of many of you and you all look so GREAT! I am ready to work on myself.
  7. I had a follow up on Wednesday and the surgeon emphasized how important weight loss was in the first year. I am losing slow but I have been sticking to consistency and working out. While I'm not seeing huge numbers on the scale I feel pretty great in my clothes and I'm even moving faster when I take my walks which is weird since before it would take me like 45 minutes to walk 2 miles and now I'm crushing 2 in 34 minutes. Keep going!

you may have insulin resistance going on, that slows weight loss. I'm curious at what point or weight loss does the body reverse it and start losing weight. Good luck to you.

    Stalls GRRRRR

my stalls seemed to be more frequent and lasted longer the farther out I got from surgery. After the first year, there were MANY times I thought "well, this is it", and then the weight loss would start up again. It finally stopped at 20 months out.

    Stalls GRRRRR

I broke my stall this morning! Down 1.8 lbs since yesterday and down 1.6 since my last lowest weight, so I think the stall might actually be over. 😁 I am trying so hard to exercise but yesterday doing steps my knee started hurting, plus my hip is still hurting from the treadmill, and my arm is still hurting from the trainer I met with. I was going to swim, but then I realized that might be hard with my arm messed up... Last night I walked all over my apartment following @ShoppGirl's suggestion. It was nice. I was on the phone with my parents but still managed to get my calorie goal for the day (according to my Apple Watch).
  10. I’ve heard of the 3rd year bounce back too. Honestly scares the sh&@ out of me. It was from one person I know. Not sure if it’s bc she just had trouble with that or if it’s fact. Hard once someone says that not to let it stick in your head. Even though I know I’ve been at goal and maintained. Give it take a few pounds each way. I think weight will be something I have to always keep vigilant on.

    Stalls GRRRRR

Stalls can be 3-6 weeks generally speaking. Small fluctuations on the scale like that are typically water weight, but just to be sure, make sure you're still tracking your food and staying on point as you ride this stall out.
  12. I got sleeved on the 29th of January from the Boston Mass General. My surgeon was Ozanan Meireles. He works at both MGH and the Salem Hospital. Very good surgeon. The weight center at the MGH leaves a lot to be desired. Extremely difficult to get a answer quickly and calling the place is frustrating. The dietician I had was awesome. So overall a pretty good experience.

    Got my surgery date!

So I finally got my surgery date after about 7 months of waiting. I am feeling so many mixed emotions but mainly excited and scared. My surgery is on Valentine's Day or Feb 14th. I thought how symbolic because it's all about self love now in my life and treating myself to the life I deserve rather than put up with. It's been such an emotional journey for me. I'm so ready now though. I just need to remember the good over the ugly parts. I'm a little bit sad because I've only lost 26 lbs throughout this time but I worked really hard with psychologists and my psychiatrist to have a better relationship to food throughout all of these months. It was slow but my weight has been going down only for the first time in 2 years. I'm on my preop diet now. It's really tough but I'm determined to do what I need to be surgery ready. I've been drinking so much water having sugar free popsicles to curb my hunger pangs. It's almost messed up but I'm so excited to not have my appetite right after surgery for a little bit because it's quite a nuisance when you're eating 500 calories a day on a pre op stomach. Anyway, thanks for everyone's advice over these months. Just wanted to share the update and express my feelings. If you're going through the same thing I'm always open to talk. 14. One of my doctors recommended it. Before that, I thought it was only for super obese people. I wonder if some doctors also think this way. I have a family member who is a doctor, and although she was not against the surgery, she said that she has had many patients regain weight. To me, this was a warning not to let myself be one of them. I ran it by two of my other doctors, and they were both supportive. Funny enough, I had brought it up to one of them on a whim several years prior, and was discouraged from looking into it because my BMI was on the lower end, and insurance would not cover it likely. In the end, you have to do what is best for you. Good luck!

    Hello

I’m glad you’re here. I used to know many athletes in CO who had MS. I have found the weight loss has helped me tremendously with mobility (arthritis).

    Hello

Hi..... today marks one week post op. Started the journey last August and my surgery was 1/27. My biggest (and most unexpected) hurdle has been NO DESIRE TO EAT. NOT EVEN A LITTLE. I called my doctors office on Tuesday bc I was extremely weak and not sleeping. Went in on yesterday and I had dropped 14.3lbs (starting weight was 264.3 and I was 250 at weigh in) Doc told me to drink for juice or something with sugar in it and switch to ensure drinks. He's worried about me getting malnourished. Said we will get back on track with the diet once I'm feeling better. I did that but the only mistake I made was sipping through a straw AND drinking while eating soup. HUGE MISTAKE. I won't do that again. Today is better though. Has anyone else gone through this as far as NEVER being hungry?
  18. Best. One. Ever. It snowed here in the St. Louis area, and I have always loved snow but haven't been able to play in it for years because of my weight. My 11 year old son and I just came inside from playing in the snow and sledding and I went up and down our hill so many times to sled and wasn't winded AT ALL. This is the first time in my son's life that I've been able to get out there and keep up with him in the snow and this and this alone is worth every penny I paid for my surgery!!! 19. I had NASH (fatty liver disease), newly diagnosed high blood pressure and I've had migraines since I was 10. I'm 50. Everything went away except the migraines, but I'm also going through menopause I think and they have increased. [emoji2370] The thing is, anyone can have these conditions, so I do take issue with doctors acting like weight loss will cure everything. I knew it was the only way to improve my fatty liver, and it did, so I'm happy about that, but I wish doctors would let people know that there is no guarantee it will make all thr comorbidities go away. Stalls GRRRRR

I have heard people who have had stalls last for up to six weeks on here and then the loss started again. I was worried that I was going into maintenance too but I am a little closer to “normal” BMI and I worry that my body is just happier at the higher end of that normal range. Honestly I will be thrilled if I get to my goal of normal BMI. I actually gained four pounds now (my grandma was in hospice and just passed away Monday so I was definitely eating more than I should) and I have a post op appointment today so I get to go In and face the NP knowing I haven’t lost much since my last visit 😢. This may sound crazy Or silly but can you clear a path to walk from one end of your house to the other? I have a tiny house and am surprised I haven’t worn out the wood laminate but I walk back and forth like this daily. I do it because the treadmill is hard on my knees and just walking in my house doesn’t hurt them.

    Stalls GRRRRR

I lost 50 lbs before surgery and have lost 46 since surgery (4.5 months ago). I KNOW from everything I've read here, in my support groups, and in the information provided to me by my bariatric center that stalls are normal and inevitable. BUT THEY STILL SUCK DONKEY BALLS! I was losing about 9 lbs a month (rolling average) for the first 4 months, but since month 4, it's been just up and down the same two pounds. I'm TRYING to focus on the fact that I've gone from a 2x-3x to a large. I'm TRYING to focus on the fact that I can walk so much more quickly now. But I am so scared the weight loss has stopped. I am trying to do exercises, but I hurt my arm and my doc told me to rest it for a while. I was then doing more treadmill, but my hip started to hurt like it did when I did treadmill every day before surgery. My eating is decent but not perfect (I eat out a lot due to traveling for work, so I know my meals aren't low fat). I'm drinking so much I have to pee every hour. How long do stalls last and how do you know if you're in a stall or if your weight loss has STOPPED? (sorry for the CAPS 🤪)
  22. I woke up at 4:30 AM throwing up. It's been a bad day. Dumping I think, I am trying to just get something in, and something will calories so I indulged in about 4.5 oz of a milkshake. I won't do that again. I'll eat, weigh and measure, less to 2 oz. I'm fine and then sometimes 1.5 hours AFTER eating it will start gurgling and feels like it's just sitting there on my breastbone. I know if I throw up I will feel better. It will not go away. WHAT causes this? I'm worried about continuing to lose weight. I'd like to stop, but that seems impossible at this point.
  23. He is basically skin and bones and a giant but dysfunctional brain. We're still very close. The word in Spanish is "amigovios", if you speak Spanish. If not, it's a cross between "amigos" (friends) and "novios" (boyfriend/girlfriend). He's actually really supportive of my weight loss efforts, despite liking larger women and not understanding weight issues at all. He's 5'10" and weighs 135lb soaking wet and holding a cheese stick (that is literally how he weighed himself when he was here last).
  24. At my first one (which was several months into my weight loss journey but a few months before surgery) I was over 55%. My current body fat per my home scale is 48.7% (by my home scale in May it was 57%). I don't know about these pictures. My semi-ex boyfriend has a 6% body fat and he just looks really scrawny, no muscles at all. He is strong, but there's no six pack or anything. Certainly no pectoral definition (or arm definition for that matter).

    Hello

Good on you for taking some steps towards a healthier life, and congrats on the weight loss so far! Talk to your neurologist maybe about some exercises that are tailored to your abilities or ask to work with a physical therapist.
