A little food advice, please and thank you!
daniotra replied to Andrea72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
BigViffer has some good thoughts. Since you need the calories, go for the full fat cheese, yogurt and milk. Avocado is good, so is Peanut Butter. Use a little olive oil in your cooking. One of my kids has feeding and weight gain issues. I make sure to keep Greek yogurt with fat in it around just for him. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Great job getting and staying on track everyone! and WOW @@rockinrobin, what a terrific loss! I'm jealous. I'm still plugging away 1 to 2 pounds each week, and wishing like heck it would move faster. I got a Baker's Cyst in my knee, so that's put me off of any serious cardio for a while, though walking is still fine. I'm also making it to the gym the four times a week my goals call for, which is nothing short of miraculous for me. What is everyone's favorite 'legal' treat food? (Mine are Mug Cakes, Quest bars, and mixing my chocolate Protein powder into nonfat Greek Yogurt, and adding a tablespoon of peanut powder--YUM!) What is your best Go-To lunch food that you seem to eat often? (Mine would be Boar's Head golden classic chicken breast, sliced super thick in the deli, and then cut into sticks at home and I bag into 4 ounce portions. Super low in fat and high in Protein, and moist enough to taste good.)

I agree with all of you. My NUT is crazy. I knew that from the beginning, but in doing her job, she calls to check on things and that was her advice. In all honesty my surgeon feels she is too, but she works for the hospital, not him so he can't do anything about it. My most favorite things in the world prior was milk, cottage cheese, yogurt and tuna. Now....I just can't stand the taste. I've even tried humus. Seems like the only thing I liked prior, that I still find tasty is the laughing cow cheese. I'm still drinking the Premier Protein choc shakes, but I can't handle the sweetness of the other flavors. I've also been drinking the Isopure Protein drinks that are in glass bottles. 160 calories, 40g of protein, and very little carbs. It's just frustrating because yesterday I made a black bean Soup. LOVED IT. Went for it today, and it was just so yucky. <----I might be 44, but I resort to my inner child when it comes to food. Lol I never thought of just trying one new food at a time. Once it tried it, if I couldn't eat it I threw it out and found myself not wanting to eat the rest of the day. Then I'd go for something totally different the next day. There is that inner child again. . But...maybe I'm just not giving it a fair go. I just can't see how all the healthy things I once loved, I now find either the taste or texture leave much to be desired. I'll keep chugging along and instead of all the low fat stuff, I'll go for the normal(good foods) and see if that makes a difference. Heck if I made it past the severe depression I suffered 2 weeks post op, I know this too shall pass. I just hope it's quick. lol. Thank you for all of your advice. -

As far as the surgeon is concerned...all I need to do is be on a liquid diet 2 days prior to surgery and then the night before no liquid or food. For my prep I'm ordering/buying everything I need. Vitamins, baby utensils, gas x strips, dry mouth stuff, non slip socks, Protein powder, sugar free Jello, sugar free pudding, Soups, Isopure (for the first few days after surgery), low sodium chicken broth, greek yogurt, sugar free Popsicle, firming cream, and bite tip Water bottle. I'm probably over doing it, but I want to be prepared and have everything go as smoothly as possible. I've been researching everything so I'm super prepared. -

Your nut is insane. Milkshakes and ice cream are a terrible idea. Your body has all the calories it needs packed away in the fat cells in your body. If you want to focus on getting your calories up, add a tablespoon of peanut butter or almond butter to a protein shake or some Greek yogurt. -

Daisee68 replied to Andrea72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would not do ice cream and milkshakes. If you can tolerate those at least do a Protein shake instead so there is some nutrional value and a lot less sugar. I ate a lot of hummus, fat free refried Beans with cheese melted on top, Greek yogurt mixed with 1/2 scoop of protein powder), sugar free pudding snack (mixed with half scoop of protein powder), Soups, Laughing Cow cheese, pimiento cheese (yep cheese was and is still my friend). My tastes would change one day to the next sometimes. The easiest thing for me to do was plan out my meals for the day early in the day then I didn't have to think about what I wanted - I just ate what I had planned. Remember your job now is to fuel your body. It may not always be what you want but it can be what you need. Sent from my HTC One M9 using the BariatricPal App -

I don't think I have experienced what you have to this extreme. There has always been something I could eat to get in my protein: tuna, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, Protein shakes. I would suggest that you try incorporating one new food at a time but still use the standbys to make sure you are getting in enough protein and calories. Why eat ice cream when I could eat extra Greek yogurt or cottage cheese? You may or may not go back to your previous "go to" foods. You are starting over with a new palate. -

I think your NUT is crazy. Ice cream, milkshakes & the like are slider foods and completely empty calories. Fat & sugar will either upset your stomach at best or cause dumping & sliming at worse. Soft cheeses, cottage cheese, Peanut Butter, and greek yogurt are a much better choice. Instead of the 0% greek yogurt, go for the regular. Hell, have some guacamole, it's loaded with good fats. Drink whole milk for your Fluid intake. Just do your best on getting quality calories, not just hitting the number. It will come in time. -
Should I be worried?

My nut told me soft scrambled egg and mashed potatoes but that I would only be able to eat a couple spoonfuls before I got full, but apparently I pushed it with the cup, so I am going to just stay away from them and take the advice to eat yogurts and eggs. Sent from my Z812 using the BariatricPal App -
@@deanna2178 - did you also drink while eating? Mashed potatoes goes through the stomach pretty quickly and if they are kind of soupy it would be quicker. Why were you eating mashed potatoes? Carbs? I know every doctor is different but like the OP said Protein needs to be first, especially now. Greek yogurt would no doubt have the same consistency as the mashed potatoes but the protein would benefit you in more ways I ate soft scrambled eggs. I ate a little over 1/2 of 2 eggs scrambled, with cheese! YUM (still a go to favorite) STAY off the scale - you are only two weeks. You may still be purging the surgery meds - Contact your NUT and make sure you are eating the right amount and type of foods. I was told to focus on eating small amounts of protein for the first 14days, stay hydrated and move! Welcome to the losers bench!

Are you on soft foods? I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks post surgery. You are still healing. Your stomach is still swollen. Wait another week before trying anything other than the liquid food (jello, strained Soup & yogurt included) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Cheating with post op diet
glitter eyes replied to Lucilla's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know it is tough, but the post op diet restrictions are there to help with the healing of your new stomach. It's like feeding an infant pizza toppings- just not a good idea. Try to start looking for alternatives during each of your food phases that can help you with the cravings.- because it will only get harder if you don't establish some habits and control early on. Alternatives can be anything from a tasty yogurt, specialty cheese to a non food alternative. When my cravings hit I give myself a fresh manicure- it's hard to eat when your nails are drying. Usually by the time my nails are dry the craving has passed. Also, I will do a facial and have splurged on some really good facial treatments. My motto is that I was the one who choose to have surgery- not those around me. I can't expect everyone to change their lifestyle because of me. I had to learn to deal with it. There will always be food around, try to begin now making food just fuel for life not enjoyment. Start researching new hobbies or make a list of all the things you want to do when you lose weight. These things helped me stay focused. -
I have had a lot of Soup (clear broth) and thinned yogurt, even some thinned pudding. I am having to get adjusted to the new feelings and determining the difference in "full" and "slow down its not a race." No matter how hard I try to slow down and take my time, I usually feel like I have a block somewhere between my throat and my stomach, but if I relax a bit and swallow, it goes away. It's definitely new.

Oh wow I do love those rice crackers we have them here too I look forward to eating crunchy things. My saving grace is cheese and yogurt that's the only foods I can eat consistently. Wow you have until June off that's amazing. It's hard when you eat something and it doesn't agree it will be much easier for me once I move onto solid food and I can eat Protein Bars I have a very yummy brand for when I get caught out on the run at work. Spring water, protein shakes, lowfat/nonfat yogurt, sugar free jello, and I like these Del Monte jarred fruits in the fridge section of the grocery store, they keep well in the fridge, are soft and can be eaten as is or tossed into vanilla yogurt and are pretty tasty: https://www.delmonte.com/fruits/peaches/orchard-selectr-sliced-yellow-cling-peaches-no-sugar-added https://www.delmonte.com/fruits/mandarin-oranges/sunfreshr-mandarin-oranges-extra-light-syrup -

Not able to get protein down

Hey! Greek Yogurt.... That reminds me... Say...you MAY have some "probiotics" issues following your surgery that could contribute to the gassiness? Me: I entered the hospital with "dry" urine. In getting my weight down pre-op, I chose a product that had a diuretic property to it. Bad idea. This likely could've been the reason a "cloudy" urine. I'd learn later I had so-called "dry" urine. But... cloudy looking urine could mean an infection in my urinary tract, so as a safeguard, my doc put me on an antibiotic the afternoon of my morning surgery. Hmm. I wonder how much of my G.I.'s "good" bacteria got wiped out by doing that. Weak G.I.'s bacteria COULD be the contributing reason for me being SUPER gassy. (No pain. Just flatulence.) ALSO -- Greek Yogurt + Vanilla Whey Powder + Jello sugar-free Cheesecake pudding mix? MAGNIFICENT!!! I can eat this sooooo slowly with a baby food spoon... and get my Protein AND hopefully encouraging good bacteria in my G.I. again! -
What are complex carbs? Any carb or just carbs related to bread rice and pasta I guess what I'm asking is if the carb is coming from low fat milk and low fat Greek yogurt does that mean it's good carbs
-
I have been using the Greek yogurt from costco and then mixing it with sugar free Jello lol it tastes great and yea I'm thinking the same thing good carbs I have an app with my NUT on the 27th I'll have to ask
-
I think those are "good" carbs at least. I just spent 15 mins looking at yogurt to find any with less sugar (that wasn't plain).
-
The fat free skim milk and fat free Greek yogurt is what has alot of carbs and whatever dairy I tend to drink or eat at this point has carbs in it

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! I am having mine on May 3rd. I got the GenPro protein powder and I also bought Bluebonnet whey protein isolate in chocolate flavor. I also got Premiere protein shakes. Other things I got are: SF Popsicles, SF jello, OIKOS Triple Zero yogurts in a lot of flavors, PB2 peanut powder to add to my shakes, 32 and 16 ounce zippy style measured bottles for my water, baby spoons, a lot of small 1/2 cup containers, cream soups, chicken and beef broths, GasX strips and Mirilax. Best of luck on your surgery! -
Just tried eating egg beaters ? Why so painful?
RickM replied to dawnmac3903's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like you are still having a fair amount of inflammation/swelling in your stomach, restricting the flow of things it. Stick to liquids and sloppier soft things for a while longer and try it again in maybe a week. This is just one of the big variables between different people as they recover from surgery - some may need to stick to liquids (and even those may be fairly restricted for a while for some,) while others will have little inflammation and restriction to liquids. Scrambled (real) eggs and yogurt were no problem for me in the hospital, and even boiled eggs the first week, while my wife had a hard time downing the protein drinks for a while - both are within the normally expected range of results the first few weeks out. -
I have mixed 1/2 scoop of powder with Greek yogurt (I love Dannon light ,& For Greek strawberry Cheesecake with 1/2 scoop vanilla powder) or sugar free chocolate pudding snack with 1/2 scoop of chocolate powder). Sent from my HTC One M9 using the BariatricPal App

not able to eat lunch with co-workers
jane13 replied to bevewhite's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I work with a bunch of guys and maybe that's why I don't hear a lot of comments. I didn't share my WLS for about 4 months and then they started asking if I was ok, was I sick, was everything ok at home...I explained my surgery to them. they will occasionally ask if I am really full on a cup of yogurt. at Christmas they were surprised when I ate with them. we paid for a preordered meal. I of course had 3 meals worth but they didn't even realize that. point is that is you shouldn't feel awkward eating your lunch no matter how little or large. don't let their questions make you feel out of place. change the subject and keep eating your yogurt!
