    Energy after surgery?

I also got my sleeve on 2-6-19. After WLS is NOTHING like before WLS. I suck at explaining the exact science behind it, but basically your body starts to mobilize fat stores for energy and calories to maintain all of your bodily functions. In short, our bodies actually start doing the thing that they should’ve been doing (and yet sadly didn’t) by burning fat for energy, which is why we lose the weight. Now this magical “honeymoon” phase doesn’t last forever (😭😭😭) but the metabolic reset is kind of magical. I have loads more energy today eating 600-700 calories daily than I ever had presurgery.

    Artificial Sweetener Allergies?

I’m not allergic to artificial sweeteners, but they give me side effects such as nausea and headaches. That being said, the first 2 weeks of liquid diet almost killed me due to EVERYTHING being artificially flavored. I gagged down half a protein shake a day until I gave up and just started drinking fairlife milk. Right when I was cleared for soft foods, I kicked protein shakes to the curb and haven’t looked back once. So what you can probably expect is to not hit your protein goals until you can eat enough real food to get your protein. I know some people get all worked up about not hitting daily protein goals, but those are usually people who can turn to a shake of they need to. So far, I’ve lost 47 pounds since 2-6-19 and probably didn’t hit a single protein goal for my first month. I never had any issues with energy levels and I started working out pretty regularly at 4 weeks post-op. Make dairy protein your best friend (milk, cottage cheese, eggs, soft cheeses,etc..) and you’ll be much happier.

    Abnormal EKG

I also had an abnormal ekg and I’ve never had heart issues in the past. Went to a cardiologist and after an echocardiogram, was cleared for surgery I also had odd thyroid numbers and they discovered nodules on my thyroid that had to be first ultrasounded, then biopsied. Turns out I will eventually have hashimoto’s, but at least I didn’t have thyroid cancer. All of these annoying things ended up delaying my surgery by about 4-5 weeks, but I did finally get my surgery 2-6-19. Since then, I’ve dropped close to 50 pounds and am almost halfway to my goal weight.

    May 2019 Surgeries 🎉

I had mine done 5/9/19. Stood 6’ 2” tall with a clothed weight of 315 pounds and a BMI if 39.5 the day of surgery. I have my first post-op appointment tomorrow (5/15/19). Obviously I’m the same height, but my clothed weight today (5/14/19) is 291 pounds. So far it has been clear liquids: beef or chicken broth, sugar-free popsicles and jell-o, 50-50 diluted Gatorade, etc but I have to admit: I want to eat some solid food!
  7. So I had surgery April 26, and I’m on week three, and I get soft foods. My doctor has me on only 500 cal for the first 3 to 6 months. Is that normal?
  8. I just had a sleeve gastrectomy on 5/9/19 and will have my first post-op appointment tomorrow (5/15/19). So far I have been on clear liquid diet of beef and chicken broth and sugar-free popsicles and jell-o cups. I cant even imagine what I will eat first! Tbh, I’m kind of scared. Does one bite really fill you up? I was 6’ 2” 315 pounds at surgery, with a BMI of 39.5, now I am 6’ 2” 290 pounds.
  9. Hello, wls comrades. Five years ago today, I entered Onederland after a VSG Dec. 2013. HW: 271. SW: 257.2. Lowest weight: 180.8 (1/23/17). I wanted to get to 175, but my face was getting so thin and I was looking older/wrinkled. My Onederland weight was "197.8" and I smiled so broadly!! Alas, today, I weigh 206...ten pounds heavier than that day, and 27 pounds above my lowest weight. Grrrrrr. I am bummed, as I'm having a hard time getting back under control. I'm mad at myself. Just saying. I'm considering having a re-do...a second VSG later this year...because I don't want to be in that fight again. I'll see how I do between now and July. Keep me in your thoughts/prayers. Although I had NO complications, was done outpatient and did great, I don't want another surgery, but more...I DON'T want to be in that fight again, nor be over 200 pounds. But I'm told that ghrelin returns after 5 years; I'm approaching 6 years, so...'Hello, Heartache... here we go again..." My thought is...if I have another VSG ~205 pounds; lose 50-60 pounds, get to ~140-150. Then if I regain 20 pounds after five years (when i'll be almost 70 y.o.), wth. :-) I won't worry about it then. lol. When I was at 180 pounds, I was a near-size 10, feeling real good, etc.I can 'finish out' around that weight. Just thinking. Any thoughts? I may try that old "Master Cleanse," if I can hang in there the first few days. I'm open to thoughts to get back on the food track. If I can do that and get over the hump, I may be able to lose again. Hmm.

    June 2019!!! Surgery Siblings!!!

Hi all- I have a surgery date of June 12th. I am 46 years old and have spent most of my life overweight. I have done every diet known and was fortunate one time with WW I was successful- 130 pounds in 2 years. I remember the joy I felt, how attractive I felt, I didn’t mind taking pictures and then I quit smoking (9 years ago on June 10). I lost my sister, my children’s father and my mother in that time, I have had surgery on one foot and have developed an issue with the other. I have gained 85 lbs back (down 25 since this journey began last summer). I am just done just watching life happen while others live it. That is all on me I know, I do not blame anyone for the situation I am in, I love food and have a giant sweet tooth. I am going to be a Grandma for the first time in july (she is due on my Moms birthday) I want to be the kind of grandma she was to my boys. My husband and children are so dedicated and excited for me, I am so lucky to have them. I noticed the other day I said to myself I like you, lol some people may not get the humor in that but I sure did. I know that it will be a long road and I will have setbacks and bad days. No hope to meet some others who are like me ❤️

    Energy after surgery?

I had VSG on 2/6/19, and I can definitely say I have a lot more energy now than I did before surgery. I'm sure that's due to various factors, but the point is that even with the extremely reduced calorie intake I'm feeling good. Before surgery I was tired ALL THE TIME. I have hypothyroidism and PCOS (plus a 5yr old who likes to wake me up in the middle of the night still), but even right after surgery I could tell a difference in my energy level. I get B12 shots from my surgeons office monthly, so that probably helps too.
  12. I have PCOS, and I had VSG on 2/6/19. Believe me, I had this fear in the back of my mind all the way up until the day I had surgery. This fear still nags at me, but I am 14wks post-op and am down 36lbs from the day of my consult, which was less than a month before my surgery date. I just had my 3m follow-up with my surgeon today and met the goal he set for the appt (168lbs). I'm still scared that it's all too good to be true and that the weight will just come back, but I'm working hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

    Best Pre-Surgery diet (not pre-op)

I followed a simple High protein, low carb,(as low as possible), with one exception plan. My day looked like this BF: Atkin's or Premier high protein zero carb shake L: 4 ounces lean protein in lettuce wraps w/ some swiss cheese Snack: $ ounces smoked almond's or peanuts or a mix Dinner: LARGE, I mean like 3-4 cups mixed salad, lettuce, snow peas, carrots, radish, red grapes, asparagus, etc with italian dressing Exception: I allowed myself 2 small scoops of ice cream every night I walked some, not overly aggressive exercise, no gym time, just added 10-15 minutes extra walking per day I followed this regimen to the T and in the 5 month run up to my pre-op diet I lost 35 pounds and then another 7 on the 2 wee pre-op Good luck friend, keep the faith

    Embrace the Stall

Thank you all so much! I had sleeve surgery on 4/22/19. Total lost (before and after surgery) is 26 lbs. I have "stalled out" the past few days and started to worry that maybe I am doing something wrong. I came here and spent time reading all of your posts and feel so much better. I am absolutely feeling like my clothes continue to get looser every day, despite what the scale says. (I put on a hoodie today that used to be too tight and it hung on me. Also, the shoulders of my suit jackets are now too loose.) I will embrace the stall and understand it for what it is, my body readjusting to all of this and doing the work to get smaller. You guys rock and are such an inspiration to someone new to all of this!

    ❤ MAY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Feeling tired. Fell off the wagon big time, hoisting my saggy butt back on. Restarting my 10 day junk food challenge tomorrow since I only made it five days on my first go. Got an air fyer for mothers days so hoping to learn some tasty healthy recipes. Its taco Tuesday, so I make that from scratch. I always throw my taco meat over lettuce and just have a salad.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hello everyone, So I had my surgery on 2/21/2019 which is almost 3 months ago. I lost 7 pounds on pre op diet and after surgery, I lost exactly 30 pounds since then. today I weigh 225 pounds. My surgery was revision from lap band to gastric sleeve so my surgeon told me to expect weight loss at a slower rate than patients who only had the gastric sleeve. Yet following everyone here I feel that I am way behind on the weight loss. I think it is because I feel hungry all the time and that is why I am not able to eat as healthy as I should. I am going to see my surgeon tomorrow. What is the deal with this hunger and how do I get over it?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Very nice! Well my losses are slowing down even more than usual. I just did my tracker for May and I’ve lost 3.6 pounds since May 1st. It’s gonna be tough to hit my goal of 10 pounds/month at this rate. Fingers crossed I can hit the 180’s by June, but today I weighed in at 194.4 so it’s not looking promising. One day—just one day— I’d love to have a loss of 2-3 pounds. Not sure why my body seems physically unable to have a fast “whoosh” anywhere along this whole process.

    overeating after gastric sleeve

This is sooooo common. It's the thing I've been yelling about since surgery, but there are very few newbies who want to listen to this. Obesity is a disease. It has many factors. And some of those factors include our own relationships/behaviors with food. It's not just the substance--meaning it's not just "what" we eat, but it's also "when" we eat, "why" we eat, and even more-- "HOW" we eat. Then there is the metabolic derangement that goes along with things that creates obesity. The surgery is just a tool to jack our hormones and tummy capacity for a short window of time, and can help us lose weight quickly, and in the process it hopefully allows us time to gain new skills, develop new behaviors and relationships with food. But the further out you go, the less and less protection it offers. Our tools "mature." Few stretch--minority of the time--most just simply mature to an increased capacity. The doctors expect that. But many do not warn us. So we end up over eating, not learning our lessons up front, or just being human. And we regain. And we feel like we fail WLS. The beatings will never make morale improve. ((hugs)). Make a list of 3 things today that you need to accomplish and CAN accomplish. Make them actionable. Make them attainable: 1. Hygiene: Shower, do your hair, put make-up on, and get dressed in fresh clothes. 2. Plan your meals for the day (protein first 3-4oz + steamed veggies (al dente) + avocado/tomato salad (1oz each). Stick to that plan. (Don't forget protein first and no drinking water with your meal or 1 hour after) - weigh your food 3. Walk 5 - 10 minutes x 3 times today. Check them off your list. Go back to basics. 1 cup of food per meal. 3 meals per day and 1-2 tiny snacks if you can't eat only the 3 meals. The snacks need to be BORING! The snacks need to be <100cals, <5g carbs and healthy (i.e. hb egg, 2oz turkey lunch meat, or veggies with Grk yogurt ranch dip). Go to bed and sleep 8 hours in a completely dark, cool room. You can do this. Do it one day at a time. Join a local WLS support group. Go back to your RD. Get a referral to a counselor!!! Do it!!! It's not too late.

Hey y’all! I am feeling amazing today. My surgery, yesterday, went fantastic! I’m not gonna lie, I did feel like 💩 after I woke up. That’s why I’m barely posting this picture today, haha! But, after 9 hours passed, I felt so much better! 😊❤️

    Knee pain after surgery..

Knee pain can be quite debilitating and cause misery ,I had a knee replacement in 2014 after trying so many pain management techniques, it turned out that I had early arthritis and the cartilage in my knee had worn out so it was bone rubbing on bone, fast forward 5 years and weight gain and the knee pain came back. Now with VSG done 3/7/2019, am managing the pain and doing my walks and dropping weight gradually, I trust that when am about 70 pounds lighter the discomfort will be manageable. But please check the root cause of the pain and get help so that when you do the VSG you can exercise without so much discomfort.
