    Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery

When I started my 6 months pre-op with the nutritionist I went all in. 1200 calories a day with 60g protein minimum. For a while during pre-op I was drinking around a gallon of water on top of other liquids as well. I lost 20lbs the first month and a total of 60lbs including the 15lbs for the 2 week liquid diet right before surgery. I found it much easier to do a complete overhaul than gradually change things because I wouldn’t have stuck with gradual changes. I wrote everything down in a journal the office gave me and tracked with the SparkPeople app as well. I still use SparkPeople to track most days and I’m 9months post VSG to RNY revision.
  3. Band to sleeve revision 4/24 and down 25 pounds as of this morning. Walking on treadmill 30 minutes a day. Having trouble getting all the protein in, and have had four super dizzy spells in the past few days.
  4. Hi revised on 4/29 start of 3 day Pre-op was 232, today 213.... I will get there, still doing the 3 lbs down, 4 lbs up thing.... Ahhh oh well I'm 20 lbs down overall instead of up!! Only 80 more to go.

    Overweight! Including Progress Pics

I couldn't live WITHOUT implants now that I've had them. My boobs before were.... sooooooo tiny and sad. Even with the malpositioning and the sagging as I've re-lost the weight, my new boobs are still a MILLION times better than my old ones. I'm confident that once I'm at goal and maintaining, the revision will be very successful, since I don't forsee punishing my body with another 90+ pound weight gain and re-loss post-sleeve!
  6. Seven weeks today - 21 pounds. Ugh, revision, the slow race!

Just checking in to say hi

He quoted me for a TT and a body lift, and the TT was about $8k and the body lift (with vertical incision and body contouring) was $16000. His fees include the compression garment and 6 weeks of aftercare, and he said if i needed revision, he would make sure the cost would stay similar to the medicare rebate so it wouldn't cost me too much out of pocket (if anything). He also gave me item numbers for some of the procedures he's doing, so Medicare is rebating me about $2000 on his fees. The anaesthetists will cost me a maximum of $3500 (based on an 8 hours surgery, but if it takes less time, he will charge me less), of which half is rebatable by Medicare. My hospital fees will be covered by HBF because of the item numbers that were provided. Autologous fees are covered by medicare too. So altogether, after rebates, I'll be out of pocket about $16000k for everything. I decided on the body lift based on his recommendations. I figured if I was going to go ahead with surgery anyway, then I wanted to shoot for the best result I could have.
  8. I am getting my band on September 16! Yeah! My top weight is 236 and I want to lose about 80 pounds. I have sleep apnea and sleep with a CPAP, acid reflux, hypertension and pre-diabetes. My BMI is 36, so I was a candidate and got approved pretty quickly (in 8 days) from the time my doctor sent in my paperwork. I also sent letters from my primary care, GYN and Endocrinologist who stated all my co-morbidities and said Lap Band would be good for me. When I was 170 pounds, I did not have any of the co-morbids that I have now. I want to get to around 155. I am 5'7" tall and I will not be skinny by any means. I chose lap-band as opposed to bypass because of the amount of weight I need to lose and wanted it to be minimally invasive. When I went for my pre-op testing, the woman who did my EKG asked me if I was having a revision surgery because she said I didn't "look" large enough to be having bariatric surgery. I went to a support group and most of the people there were having bypass, so I was one of the "small ones". I have tried exercise and changing my eating habits but I am unable to tune into that full feeling. That is why banding is going to work for me. Speaking for us folks with BMI of 36 to 40 who may not look like we need surgery--we need help too! It will be just as difficult for me to lose 80 pounds as it is for someone to lose 180. I have been unable to lose more than 5 pounds and keep it off. I am so thankful for this surgery which helps people like us who really want to be healthier but can't do it alone. I have tried Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, LA Weight Loss, SlimFast. You name it and I have tried it. I will be glad for the time when we will not be stigmatized for using surgery to help us to get to a healthy weight. Until then, I will hold my head up high, knowing that I am doing what I need to do to be healthy!

    Newly Banded & HUNGRY!!!!

My doctor said that he would not do a fill until 6 weeks post op. I was banded on 9/29 but then had to have a revision on 10/4 because the empty band was to tight. I am not sure if he wants to wait 6 weeks because of the previous problems or if that is just standard procedure? I am pretty much able to eat what ever I want just in a litle smaller portions. I do feel like I get hungry before I should and plan on talking to him about this when I go in. Not sure when you doctor said to start solid food but remember to eat more protein than anything else as this fills you up faster and keeps you full longer.
  10. Wow that weight loss to me is awesome!!! I'm getting ready for revision and I don't remember losing a thing close to that in so short of time. Reading those that have lost 17-20lbs a month scares me a little actually, even though I know for surgery it could be a person short term normal. I've never lost that much so quickly. You sound be proud of yourself. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. I haven't had my revision yet, but I would expect the cravings to still be there after surgery, as I have heard many patients say that "they operated on my stomach not brain", brain still wants to do what it had been doing, that's why we have to change our way of looking at food/ relationship with food and learn to make different choices for life so we don't fall back in those bad habits and end up regaining the weight. I know it's easier said than done and i know it's a battle we have to fight all our life. How are you feeling overall? Have you lost anything with the pre op diet? I think 10 lbs being 8 days out is still great! Overall I feel okay. Just incision area became red and really itching. My pre op diet lost about 9 pounds
  12. How long ago was your band removed? I found it very hard to stop gaining weight after removal. I would go for it to help you maintain. You won't lose too much. It's a revision that is why it was approved.

    urination problems?

I was also in the city this past Saturday, doing only a bit of walking. I drank a good 24 oz. of Water before I left my home (on Long Island), took a train to the city, walked 10 blocks to the theater, sat through the entire play, including intermission, walked back to Penn Station and took the train home -- and only then finally went to the bathroom. Actually, no -- right after I walked in, I took the dog out first, changed the cat's litter...and then went. I'm the type of person who can't make it through the night without a trip (or two) to the bathroom, so yes, definitely, water loss through perspiration can really throw one for a loop! By the way, lexy, you really should consider revising your name to SexyLexy -- you are GORGEOUS!

    Lap Band Or Lap Rny

I've answered this many times, many ways...... but the short version. MAINTENENCE! the ongoing fills (when needed) are the magic... I've been up and down the scale so many times, I know that if I had the RNY I would eventually have a regain. I doubt I will need another fill maybe NEVER, but if I do... I can... Other reasons that make my top 10. 1. Surgery on Thursday, back to work the following Monday 2. All my inards are in tact 3. Down the road, if needed I could get a total unfil, and then start the process again. 4. Reversible.. any general surgeon can remove the band. 5. I absorb the nutrients from the food I eat (RNY is a malabsorbative procedure) and even though you can easily start a regain, you will never absorb the nutrients. 6. I am horrible about taking vitimins.. w the RNY you must be religious in your Bariatric Vitimins and most get VitB shots. 7. I have two friends who had the RNY... both are fighting Regains...... one more severe than the other, and both have the RNY "look". 8. The RNY scared me. 9. Ports do not scare me as they have been used for a long time, the band is just a different application. (my grandma had a port for pain meds) 10. If and when I need a revision or replacement.. I will say BRING ON THE NEW and IMPROVED VERSION!

    back from tj mexico

I was just banded by Dr. Garcia on march 21st. I went thru ready 4a change with Alma. I am at my last night in the Marriott and head home tomorrow. I have to say that I'm glad I got past all my fears of coming to TJ alone. The nurses and staff (melissa, samuel the driver, Dr. Velazco, Dr. Luna) were incredible and I'm am healing well because of their care and knowledge. The first day I had a lot of nausea which they said there are more complications when I have a revision from band. Today I am planning to go do some shopping on revolution street. I still weigh the same as I did pre op, but I know that will change soon after so many days of liquids. Good luck to those going soon.

    will my story ever stop?

God bless you, Irene! You have been through an awful lot in your Quest to achieve a healthy life. My story is similar to yours, just not the sleeve part. I had the band put in 6 years ago, and went to see my dr wanting it OUT after years of trouble. The nurse asked if I had considered a revision, and here I am 3 weeks away from my bypass surgery. Like you, I suffer from reflux and heartburn, so the sleeve was not my best choice. I feel like over the years it has become more documented that the sleeve can cause heartburn or reflux to increase, but perhaps it just wasn't a common side effect when you had yours? Either way, like you said, what's done is done. I wish you success in finding relief. This board is a fantastic place for advice and stories.

Pre Pre op 3 Day Liquid Diet

Hey, I am in SC and was told that the sleeve was best for me. I have severe reflux disease and was type 2 diabetes, hbp, high cholesterol and sleep Apnea. So I did have the sleeve done, i lost 87 lbs in 11 months but I was having worse reflux. Much worse had 2 add 3 extra medications to what I was already doing. Went from 2 pills a day to 10 a day now. My gastrointestinal doctor said that he believes it has gone into Barrett's Esophagus now and I needed to originally have the RNY surgery. Now in process of getting approved for the RNY revision from my insurance companies. My advice is if you have reflux disease to get all the information from your doctor about the effects of the sleeve before considering that option. RNY is supposed to completely get rid of it. I was told that the sleeve would get me off the meds.Well it did for the first 6 weeks. Once foods were coming back in the Reflux got way worse and has gotten so much worse since surgery. I am absolutely miserable. I don't know your situation but I just wanted to let you know that reflux can get worse with the sleeve. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. Hi. I had my initial band surgery in 2008. Needed a revision due to a slippage in 2013. I am now hoping for a conversion to the sleeve. Has anyone ever had this done after a prior revision? Thanks.

    Hi from Israel

Thank you for your welcome! Glad to hear that you and your husband have visited my small country. I live up north near Haifa, if you happened to have visited. In any case, I was initially banded in 1997 - LAP Band, early model, when support was non-existent. I began at 127 kg and went down to 51 kg within about 18 months. I experienced reflux and other symptoms that showed something was wrong but really had nobody to pinpoint the reason. In retrospect, I now know that I had experienced minor slippage and later major slippage of my band. Three years ago I had my band completely open and with the lack of restriction went from 55 kg to +-100 kg. I waited a while before finding a surgeon who I felt I could trust and jumped on the bandwagon once more for revision surgery after learning about Inamed's new AP system band. March 10 I was banded with an AP large band and had a 2 cc fill upon surgery. I'm on a liquid diet and am very keen on following post-op diet to the letter, especially since I'm anxious about a repeat slippage. I've joined this forum because I realize that we know so much more than all the MD's out there and can really help each other reach our goals and maintain good health. How are you and hubby doing since you've been banded? What kind of bands do you have? Would be happy to hear your stories. Best regards, Nava

    1st day of pre-op

Your preop diet really depends on your surgeon for what kind of diet and how long. I think it also depends on the experience of your surgeon. My daughter who went to Dr. Spivak in Houston (one of the top surgeons in the country) doesn't do any preop diet, just the day before. And after it was just liquids for first few days and then right to soft foods (jello, pudding, yogurt) and progressed quickly to food as tolerated. His belief is why would he put you on a diet that isn't realistic since we've all done so well at dieting to begin with and afterwards he wants his patient to start living with the band as soon as possible. I had to do two weeks of liquids before and after...but I did have an occasional salad and thicker Soups during the preop and I didn't beat myself up over it. For how long you need to take off afterwards, I had mine on Monday (had to stay overnight because of sleep apnea/cpap machine) and went to work the following Monday. I could have went back sooner but I had written myself off the books for that much. My daughter had hers done in Houston on Tuesday, flew back to NYC on Friday and worked on Saturday and she's a hair colorist and was on her feet all day. So it depends on what type of job and also knowing yourself and how you deal with recovery. They will give you some good drugs but seriously I only used those for the first day and a half. I would highly recommend get an elastic binder which is just a wide stretchy elastic that you can wrap around your mid section. If you're a side sleeper it helps keep your belly from flopping over. For most people what it feels like post op is that you've done a gazillion situps and you should have only done 2..lol. It's not really pain-pain but soreness. If you're lucky enough not to have gas pain the first day postop then that's a big hurdle. My surgeon sucks back out the expansion gas. So I had none of that. I would also ask for a script for anti-nausea. Because I stayed overnight I was able to get some right away, which helped a lot. But barring any complications, you will be surprised at how easy it is and boy what a difference it will make in your life. You will lose pretty good the first few weeks after surgery because you won't feel like eating anyway...but then once swelling goes down eventually you will be able to eat anything because you have no fill. So you just have to watch your eating. I'm going back in for a revision. My band has slipped, so I know to ask for my antinausea script this time, since I won't be staying overnight. I still have my binder from last time. So good luck all!! You're on your way. The pre-op diet seems like it will go on forever but truly when you get to the last 3 or four days you'll be running on adrenalin...before you know you'll be getting the Michael Jackson happy juice.. Trisha
  23. I went last week, have lost 42 since revision in April. Surgeon told me I was right on track. Not going to lie I am disappointed but I feel great better than with band. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App
  24. I too also had the lapband to gastric bypass revision surgery. My surgery was 8 days ago. Yet I still crave for normal food sometimes. Do you also crave food sometimes? I have lost about 10 pounds since the surgery. But my weight has stalled for two days. I was expecting my weight to drop at a faster rate.
