  1. I had my surgery at age 21 and I'm 1year 2 months out. -110 pounds. I was also a low BMI sleeve at 35 but Apple shaped so it was a higher health risk. Your sons eating habits sound a lot like mine. I've been a vegetarian since I was 9 and really health conscious, but I was eating enough healthy vegetarian food to feed three people at each meal!! The sleeve has been a great tool for me and my only regret at this point was not doing it sooner. I hated exercise and now I see the ability to do it as a gift, since my weight was causing me to have mobility issues. Heck, I have. a career promoting a health club and selling memberships!!! If he's ready to really commit, then he should do it. I love myself for the first time since I can remember.
  2. I'd tried everything from the time I started gaining weight in my late teens, with diets ranging from vegetarian to macrobiotic to Atkins to Dukan, counting calories and obsessing over every nutrient I consumed. I also ran, lifted weights, worked with personal trainers, shifted to working with medically-supervised weight loss, tried Weight Watchers, you name it. I had no serious health issues, but nothing would shift more than about 10-15 pounds no matter how long I stayed on it or how hard I tried. I'm two weeks post-op now and have already lost 23 pounds. It's been a bit painful, and it's hard to get down enough fluids and Protein, but each day gets easier. I did this for my health so that I'll live long enough to see my grandchildren grow up when I have them someday, and I'll also have the energy to have fun with them. Being thinner and better-looking will just be a bonus. Short-term inconvenience for long-term gain is well-worth it in my opinion!

    Vegetarian/Vegan?

I'm not a Vegetarian in the strictest sense, but I have not eaten Red meat since hitting the Green Zone 2 1/2 years ago...I don't eat eggs and much in the way of dairy products and baked (flour based) goods, along with some other things... I have absolutely no problem getting 65-80 gm of Protein everyday.... As I type this I am having my Breakfast smoothie - 35gms protein to start the day, before heading to the gym at 5am....

    Vegetarian/Vegan?

Any vegetarian or vegan bandsters out there? I'm curious how you get all of your protein in? I have relied a lot on eggs, ground turkey etc. to meet my protein needs, but I'm switching to a more plant based diet and am worried about protein intake. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  6. Yes, lots of research is definitely the key and it's so encouraging to hear that this definitely can be done vegetarian or vegan. I also get that "not that big" statement because I'm considered "thick" and I'm tall and curvy. What people don't understand is no matter how "not that big" they think you are they'll never know or understand how you feel in your own skin. When you can't fit something at home or in the store, or when you feel tired because your body has to work hard to carry fat. Like in my case I'm a vegan and I excerise and I'm over 250 so I'm making a decision that natural or surgery a change has to happen.

    Stuck like Chuck

@@ixico Stalls are normal in this process but two months of stall at 4 months would get anyone concerned. I want you to read Embrace the Stall. I can't quote it here probably because I am iOS. Can someone add a link?? Or just search for embrace the stall. There is a board for vegetarians and vegans. I recommend you reach out to them. They might have some great protein advice that us omnivores just can't help you with. Good luck!
  8. congrats! I do have a question - are you a vegetarian by choice or is it a medical decision? I'm always curious about why people are vegetarians or vegans. Not knocking it - just a curiosity I have
  9. band to sleeve revision here. I wouldnt call myself a vegetarian by no means. A good Ribeye is heaven on a plate. I know our diet is mostly Protein and some veggie for the most part. Does anyone here use nuts or seeds as your protein vs having a piece of chicken or meat? I want to follow a paleo/primal diet but is all the veggies too high in carbs for us and too low in protein if Im eating so many veggies. I read Dr Weiner A Pound of Cure which for his wls patients he is more plant based and so is Jonathan Bailor, The Calorie Myth. More into the superfoods, etc but no counting calories. Anyone follow this type of diet?
  10. I was banded on Wednesday the 7th. I am on day four now, and I feel like I am starving all the time. I have tried Protein drinks, popsicles, juice, gallons of Water (I have no restrictions when it comes to liquids), thinned out Soup, broth, decaf tea and full caf coffee. Milk and yogurt. The only thing I can get down without a hitch is the water, and apparently that is a good thing. But I make a small amount of soup (very thinned out) and sip the whole thing, and right away I am in the kitchen looking at everything that looks good. I think it might be in my head --- well, I am pretty sure some of its in my head, as I have been a vegetarian for years now and my son's ham slices look delicious! I keep thinking "another week of liquids!???" I want apples, and toast, and fajitas, and ............ How to calm the hungries?

What made you chose RNY rather than sleeve?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I suppose I am scared that it seems like HUGE surgery, the possibility of further surgeries in the future, I am fish eating vegetarian... but at the same time I am sure i have scar tissue from two bands. Im just scared I think.
  12. Frittata recipe for anyone interested... Ingredients: Buy one large container of Egg Whites One package of baby spinach (you can switch out any veggies but this is my fave) Pam Spray Goat cheese (you can also add low fat mozarella) Italian seasonings (or any spices you enjoy) I buy one package of Jimmy Dean low fat Turkey Sausage crumbles. (You can also switch this out with turkey bacon, vegetarian fake sausage crumbles, etc) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Take one large frying fan with a METAL handle (NOT PLASTIC as this will go in the oven) Spray with pam pretty heavily so that the fritatta pops right out at the end Pour the bag of turkey crumbles in the pan (or your meat of choice) and warm up Then I add the whole bag of spinach which cooks down and softens up very well and sneaks in a good amount of veggies - (this is where you can also sneak in other veggies if you want - Asparagus tips, red peppers, etc) Then on Medium to Medium-High heat (you don't want this to burn the bottle) add the carton of egg whites which will cover the large pan. You may not have to use the whole container. It all depends on how large you want your fritatta and how big your pan is. It doesn't rise so you can eye this. On Medium heat, let is cook for a few minutes. You will notice the whole thing cooking except the top. At this point is where I put in goat cheese crumbles which end up melting with the turkey sausage and spinach and then I sprinkle Italian seasons all over it Put it into the oven for about 8 mins which will cook the top up and melt the goat cheese Once you see it's finished, pull out of oven and flip onto plate. You can then use another plate to flip it back over to see the pretty side. Cut into pie slices. You can then rewarm each slice for about 45 seconds thru the week. It's a super easy, super quick breakfast and it's such a great flavor and way to sneak in veggies and Protein and being very low fat. It also helps with less waste of throwing food away because you can sneak in different veggies. The one above just happens to be my fave flavors. You can alternate different meats and cheeses and veggies and have a million different variations. This ends cooking with Lisa LOL
  13. The only protein powder that doesn't gag me is called Milk and Egg Protein. It mixes well with any fruits, frozen yogurts, etc. It doesn't taste like medicine or vitamins. They sell it on line. I found it at Smith's grocery store, but they sell it on line. They also make a brown rice and a vegetarian powder, but I'll stick to my milk and egg one. I make it with frozen pineapple chunks and sweetened coconut and toss in my vitamins. Not bad.

    On maintenance- now this

The only thing I can think of is when I don't get enough protien my sleep is messed up. I have been a vegetarian for 18 years so it's always something I have had to work on. I am sure you are up on your protien too but maybe see if you can get an extra 20 or so grams in. Like a protien shake in the afternoon. I know we aren't supposed to snack but give that a try and see if it helps. Good luck to you! ~A

    I need some encouragement

Yeah @@BLERDgirl lol. I will figure it out.. I wouldn't mind becoming a vegetarian but I LOVE chicken
  16. My nutritionist and doctor are 100% on board with my diet. I'm not on my own...everything is monitored and approved. When I was selecting a bariatric surgery team, one of my criteria was to find a team that did not stress keto-only and had more flexability with people who prefer vegetarian diets. My research university serves an international population that has a lot of culturally vegan and vegetarian people.....so my dietitians are more experienced with adapting a healthy bariatric diet to different diets. Both my doc and nutritionist are enthusiastic about my choice of Mayo Clinic Diet, (they also like Mediterranean, DASH and Japanese...which are similar)...so we have a lot of options:) I think it's important to get professional input, support and help through the process.

    mushies

Last night I made dinner for my husband and since I'm not cooking, I stocked up at Trader Joes. They make a "Turkey Bolognese" sauce that I would call a "mushie". I'm a vegetarian so I didn't eat it but if I wasn't I would have. It's 80 calories a half cup and 7 oz of protein. He said it was very good and the consistency was perfect for that stage of lap band eating. You can just microwave it or put it in a sauce pan on the stove--already cooked. He said it tasted homemade and from what I could tell, I agree. I recommend it.

    Pre Op diet

I felt the same way. I'm a vegetarian and loooove vegetables but after 4 days I'm so over them. The sweetness from the shakes helped a bit and my dearest friend coffee.

    Breakfast foods high in protein?

i also love the morningstar sausages -- both the patties and the links. i do amy's vegetarian breakfast burritos. the jimmy dean turkey sausage sandwiches made with egg whites on an english muffin are good -- but would be tough early with the sleeve. dunkin doughnuts has a new fantastic egg white sandwich on flatbread with turkey sausage in it. yum. I eat 1 tbsp of PB on toast. I love turkey bacon. i've moved to the type with no nitrates -- less sodium. it's divine. the only downside is it goes bad quicker, so i just cook up two big batches over a few days. some people think this is weird, but i love the turkey bacon on the Peanut Butter toast! there's a great recipe for a high Protein breakfast from the south beach diet book. basically it's this: spray muffin tins with Pam or other spray combine eggbeaters with a little salt, any type of seasoning a little milk... add in a little onion and a little chopped spinach. pour into muffin tins, about 3/4 full. top with a bit of cheddar cheese. bake at 350 for about 20 minutes or until the eggbeater is cooked. these are great because you can pack them to go to work and re-heat in microwave that said, i don't have a sleeve yet -- so my options aren't quite as limited -- yet! enjoy.

    Which way do I go??

okay if its situational food concersn I have run the gamit in 5 weeks and managed fine - I usually get aplate, put a small spoon of offered foods and take tiny, tiny bites I have been to a wedding (I asked for a vegetarian meal said my tummy was upset) they were serving steak and i was early post op 3 birthday parties pizza/pasta/salad/mexican - I have managed it all and no one noticed I wasn't chowing down like I used to so its about moderation/quanitity and smart food choices on the pizza I actually ate the toppings - i was concerned the bready crust would get stuck so I didn't even try it

Back - But A Little Late

No, I didn't have a support group or support system. That is a recipe for failure. I now have my Nutritionist, Daughter and Son in Law. I left my husband and left an abusive situation. I feel 100% better and the weight is falling off. My Daughter encourages healthy meals. I remain a vegetarian, but I sneak in fish now and then and maybe some cottage cheese. You have to have support - it is a must!!! There are thinks that happen with a band that no one else understands. Gurgling noises, hiccups, productive burping or even vomiting. I found if I was stressed I ate too fast and it just came back up. Also, I was told by the Nutritionist that stress causes irritation in your stomach. For me, the band is tighter and I am nausea Now instead of eating something soft like cereal and milk, I ride it out. Try to eat a few bites fruit. You have to be good to yourself FIRST. I feel amazing. I am happy again with my band. We are friends again

    Suffering Skin and Hair

I may have to find a vegetarian gelatin and try that.

    Are you hungry?

@BLERDgirl. I do have omeprazole but I haven't taken it. I will try that. Just a quick question for you. Given the diet restrictions that we need to follow, how do you get your Protein as a vegetarian? I will have a giant garden this spring/summer and I am interested in finding out how you are doing this. I know I can add veggies to everything which is great, but just curious
