  1. Hi everyone, nice to meet you all! I’ve just started my WLS journey and have so many questions. I’ve been researching things day and night. So far I’ve had my intake appointment, set up an appointment for a bariatric psych eval, made an appointment for an upper GI series, set up three of six requires nutrition appointments all of which are one month apart, and my first appointment with the surgeon will be 8/1. In your process, what came next for you? About how long between your initial consult and surgery? Any input is sure appreciated.

    Why am I so depressed

Hi BriarRose, I appreciate your words of encouragement and support. I will contact the county DMH and hope to convince her to a doctor’s visit. It’s a day at a time with her because her moods go up and down. I’ll keep the community updated. This is helpful for me to be able to go somewhere to discuss this matter. I have 3 friends who were and still are successful in their bariatric surgeries. I know that’s why we (husband and I) were so supportive of her decision. I feel now she mentally and emotionally was not mature enough to handle the after effects. I’ll keep my hopes and prayers that a breakthrough will come soon. Thank you.
  3. Hello guys, I decided to go the ER in a hospital that also does bariatric surgeries. They tested my blood and I had an ultrasound of the stomach area. They said there are no signs of any leakage or inflammation, and that I must have ruptured one of my internal sutures, which may have injured my muscle. They prescribed me some painkillers, gave me a week of sick leave (my boss will be delighted lol) and told me to take it very easy with a lot of bed rest. All in all, nothing serious! Thank you for your support guys. @Janice looks like the same thing happened to you! How long did it take for you to be back on your feet?
  4. So about a week ago i uploaded a post about how nauseous i felt and was unable to drink water and had on going nausea. 2 days ago i rushed to the emergency room. I had just seen my surgeon this day and was feeling great. before this i was in bed for weeks feeling the obvious very unwell. I was slowly starting to recover and i felt good enough to go to his office which is about an hour away from where i live. I went to my appointment all was well and he said i was doing great. That same day i went to visit my cousins and i was driving i felt a little discomfort on the sides of my stomach but that feeling went away. When i got home i felt an instant stabbing sensation on my lower left back that felt like a sharp/ blade or knife literally stabbing me over and over again i was on the floor rolling in pain and severe agony for 2 hours until the feeling that was in my back traveled to my stomach and the pain was so unbearable i could no longer take it. I rushed to the emergency and i got there at about 12am in the morning i waited till 10:30am the next day until i was seen so i was in 10+ hours of pain. I took endone and many other pain killers literally nothing took the pain away. and at this point due to the aggressive pain i was in i was extremely dehydrated and only received a iv fluid at 7am and i felt extremely upset as i told them i had just done a bariatric surgery and needed fluids. anyways. i had blood, test ct scans and urine tests. Blood was found in my urine and the excruciating pain was KIDNEY STONES. I did end up passing them through the toilet but this was the worst pain i’ve ever endured in my whole LIFE. Worse than waking up from THE vsg worse than anything i’ve experience id rather go through vsg first day then kidney stones. Anyone had the same problem as me. i’d love to hear. Thankfully i’m doing a little better now. but the nausea at the hospital was unreal i was unable to down tablet pills or anything and i was gagging every second it was horrendous. I also have super bad constipation. i feel so heavy. i’ve tried an enema but it didn’t work so hopefully i’m gonna try something else but other than constipation im doing okay now. Babe you had a similar situation is kidney stones very high after Bariatric surgery. the nurses and doctors told me it is because of the less water and food intake.
  5. I'm scheduled for my RNY on 5/18. This morning I found out that UnitedHealthcare has denied my surgery as experimental. I've filed an appeal but have been told it's unlikely to be approved. My reason for surgery is not weight - I have gastroparesis. I need this surgery. It's the only viable fix for me, but because my insurance plan says no bariatric procedure, that's it, or so I'm told. Amy recommendations? I need this surgery. I've gone through all the testing because the first time my Dr's office called the insurance they were told yes, go ahead, I'm covered. Now surgery is denied. I'm sick to my stomach, heartbroken, nervous. I hate this. I just want the surgery.
  6. I’m 3.5 months post sleeve surgery and my hair shedding started right at 3 months! I always take my Bariatric daily Vitamins and also collagen Protein Powder daily. It is nerve racking when it happens but I know it will grow back. Just part of the process and patience is key!

    May 2023 surgeries

Oh, man! YES! I gained 15lbs from the time I started this process until my preop diet... 3.5 months. I couldn't get enough food. Something in me snapped. I'm now a week into my pre-op diet and those thoughts and feeling have settled down a lot. I still miss food sometimes, but not at the levels it was at. I am getting tired of shakes though and that's causing other issues, but I'm working through it. Best advice. A solid support system; on here and around you at home. I've talked to several friends I know personally, who have had bariatric surgery, and it helps a lot. My husband is my biggest supporter. I don't think I could do with with out him or my faith. Good luck to you. You got this.

    Favorite Vitamins?

Looks totally do able. Here are mine along with my meds that I'm hoping to eventually be off of. Those big horse pills 4Xs a day cost 30 bucks a month but contain everything needed after bariatric. (Walgreens Optifast Post Bariatric) Is it cheaper to buy each vitamin individually? We got to take vitamins forever so I'm all about saving money as long as my bloodwork looks good

Yes, my nutritionist wasn't big on the idea either. When I told her what the doc said about taking Flintstone vitamins she looked appalled since they are both on the same bariatric team. Heehee
  10. So after my surgery to remove the last of the polyps on the 14th, my GI surgeon said he's clearing me foe revision surgery, but said he doesn't really want me to have the surgery. I asked why and he said "At first, I was sure you had the polyps because of the PPI, but now I don't think that's the case" so I said "Ok, so what's causing them?" and he said "I really don't know. I think maybe you might just be someone who makes polyps" and I said "I don't see how that's the case. I've never had any before, and I didn't have any when I had the sleeve surgery. I didn't start getting them until the GERD, gastritis, and esophagitis started and I had to go on the really high PPI for a long amount of time" and he said "I'm clearing you for the surgery, but like I said, I don't think you should have it". So I called my bariatric surgeon's office today and talked to them about this and now my surgeon said he needs to talk to the GI surgeon and then "think about what to do about the surgery" and will let me know if the revision is going to happen or now. Ok, WHAT??? How is this real life right now? They BOTH agreed the polyps were caused by the 80mg of Nexium I have to take every day just to keep the GERD at bay. They BOTH agreed a revision was necessary to get rid of the GERD and to keep the gastritis and esophagitis from coming back again. They BOTH agreed that the revision would solve my issues and let me get back to my life. All of the polyps and lining that were tested all came back negative for everything. And now that I'm finally able to have the revision, I might not get it??? The insurance approved it 2 months ago!!! Who knew THAT wouldn't be the fight I'd have for the revision?!?! I don't know what to do. Now I'm in yet another holding pattern and I don't even understand why. I can't stay on high amounts of PPI forever. I'm so upset. I thought I was at the end of this nightmare. I just don't understand what the issue is.

    Favorite Vitamins?

I'm curious about the vitamin patches. I asked my nutritionist about them and was told they are known not to absorb as well as chewables etc. But they sound so convenient. I am taking Walgreen's Optifast Post Bariatric citrus chewables 4Xs a day without any problems. But time will tell if they keep me at proper levels.

The mix that works for me is Procare Health - Bariatric Multi Vitamin w/ 45 Iron one a day - https://procarenow.com/products/once-daily-bariatric-multivitamin-with-45mg-of-iron-capsule?selling_plan=4946788588 Procare Health - Cal-Mag DK calcium https://procarenow.com/collections/calcium-supplements/products/cal-mag-dk-capsules?selling_plan=4716593388 Bariatric Fusion - B50 Complex - https://www.bariatricfusion.com/products/b50-complex?_pos=5&_sid=29c6f5f81&_ss=r And then I just use a B12 melting tablet. These were the easiest for me, I HATE the big chewable chalky vitamins.

    Favorite Vitamins?

I use the Bariatric Advantage "chewy bites" for both my multivitamin and calcium (they're the "starburst" texture ones you were referring to). I take BariMelts Iron + C for iron; they are a dissolving tablet and while they don't taste great they seem to be one of the only iron supplements that don't upset my stomach. I would say as far as absorption, anything formulated for bariatric patients would probably be best.

chews, chewables, and liquids should all be fine. Bypass patients are usually told not to take gummies, but the other versions you mentioned are fine. Make sure your calcium supplements are calcium citrate, because we don't absorb calcium carbonate well (the person above mentioned Adora - maybe those are OK for sleeve patients, but not bypass patients). The Bariatric Fusion ones the other poster mentioned are fine for bypassers, though. The first few months post-op I took Bariatric Advantage calcium chews, those are fine for us too (later I just took calcium citrate tablets)

    Favorite Vitamins?

I would follow your surgeons recommendations if they have them, mine recommended celebrate. Unfortunately, any multivitamin that was chewable or tablet form led to extreme nausea so I switched to gummy vitamins and my surgeon approved them. For calcium I use bariatric fusion calcium chews in caramel flavor, and Adora calcium chocolate for a daily treat. I would recommend not buying in bulk until you know what works for you!

    Traveling

I'm not sure how long it has been since your surgery. The challenge I found in the first couple of months when going out to dinner was getting enough protein with very limited capacity. As a result, I brought along my own protein when I traveled (powdered shakes) and had them in the hotel before going out to eat. I would then have just a small appetiser or something to drink at the restaurant while others were eating. You could do the same at family events, although I realize that's easier easier said than done. In my case, family and friends kept insisting I eat things because they were low-calorie, without understanding my need to prioritize protein and not fill up on other foods. It can be quite challenging to keep telling insistent relatives that you really don't want to eat more. For the road, there are some wonderful snacks in the Bariatric Pal store than you can bring along. None of this is ideal, but it's worth the effort!
  17. My revision surgery was April 19, 2023 and I also have BCBS. my original sleeve date was 11/2016 and I lost 100 lbs the first year and half. My lowest weight was 135 and I’ve maintained that for the last five years. Around my second year post sleeve I developed acid reflux and heartburn daily. When I would eat, shortly after I’d need to either throw up the acid trying to come up or I’d have to sit and tolerate the acid burning until it subsided. Daily omeprazole and tums did very little to counteract the symptoms. If I ate, it was happening. 2020 I had another EGD performed that showed Barrett’s esophagus had begun to form in my esophagus and there was a hernia. The surgeon wanted to move forward with a bypass revision but because I didn’t want to lose any weight or have another major surgery I asked for other medications to try before we went straight to surgery. 2023 in March I had another EGD performed that showed three ulcers, the hernia and worsening Barrett’s. Nothing had worked so far and my quality of life just wasn’t good. Considering I love to cook and eat, I knew I couldn’t just live with this much longer. I agreed to do the surgery. The doctor sent over an EGD result, CT scan and upper GI to BCBS who approved the revision surgery. (My plan has Bariatric benefits) if your plan doesn’t have Bariatric benefits I would check with your insurance coordinator to see if there is another option. I am now three days post revision- no heartburn or acid reflux at all. Painful, but on the mend.

Worried I Will Not Lose Enough Weight

There are lots of statistics about weight loss after bariatric surgery. But as with all stats they’re just average. We all lose at our own rate. Some lose more quickly while others lose more slowly. Some lose all the weight they wanted. Some lose more & some lose less. And there is no timeline as to when you have to lose your weight. Statistics only give you an idea of what might happen not what will happen. I lost more than double my 3 month weight loss (16kg at 3 months & 42kg when I stabilised). Though it was about half of what I lost when I reached what was my goal (to lose 31kg). Forget any self imposed or external timelines. Celebrate every pound you lose because regardless of how much you lose or by when you’ll lose it, you’ll be in a healthier place.
  19. Hello friends! 2 and 1/2 years out post VSG, donated a kidney to my daughter 15 months ago and had a full tummy tuck with muscle repair 5 ish months ago, here is my issue/concern. I have seen my Bariatric team, primary dr, kidney transplant team and I am still have no real understand of what’s happening!!! they slapped a Dexcom on me die to crazy blood sugars. Spike to over 350 and at night drop below 40, yes I said 40. Full on symptoms of hypoglycemia aboit 4 days out of the week despite anything I try with my diet. The endo ordered acarbose for me three times a day, I’m carrying glucagon nasal spray for my lows that get bad. all my blood tests come out pretty good, my A1c is a little higher than I would like it and they are throwing around things like insulin resistance (blood tests don’t show it), pre diabetes and insulinoma. My Bariatric team is a little concerned because they have never had to treat anyone with acarbose (anti-diabetic medication) and it isn’t supposed to lower my lows at all but help lower my spikes after meals. I’m eating super low carb and high protein and all the dietitian could give me for advice was to cut out bananas. Has anyone here out a year or two dealt with such a thing. I can’t take a lot of medications due to only having one kidney?? im just out of ideas and options !!!

    First time

Hello and welcome. Any surgery is tough on mind and body in the first 2 weeks. Bariatrics take it to another level when we have to drink and all our new tiny stomach wants to do is eject it. Just do your best, I was told that would be ok for a few weeks. It took the pressure off somewhat. I must confess I did not do some vitamins for months. Get passed this week and you will feel better. Ring your team if you start to get overwhelmed with pain or nausea etc
  21. I've had my sleeve surgery on March 23rd. I was 326 lbs before the liquid diet, dropped down to 310 just a day before surgery and now I'm between 271 and 275. Today (April 20th) kinda marks my 1 month post op and I've been hospitalized twice! The first time happened was when I was switching over to a multivitamin pill from a chewable. (2 weeks post op) Once I popped that pill and swallowed it, I felt it opened in my stomach and left a extremely bitter taste and threw up all of my medication and made me weak. Went to the hospital and they said that I was dehydrated. Thank you multivitamin pill for making me feel this way. They gave me IV and sent me home the same day. The second time, which was last Saturday (4/15), I was sitting on my couch taking a little nap because I was a little tired. I woke up and left my plate from my lunch on my table. I got up, took it in the kitchen and right away felt so exhausted! My partner saw me and said what's wrong? I remember saying help me to the couch. 15 seconds later and I was on the floor by my bathroom. I've actually lost consciousness for 15 seconds and let's just say that I didn't make it to the toilet in time... Went back to the hospital for test and lab work and my red blood cells were at a all time low. They gave me IV and magnesium. Stayed overnight. When my levels were somewhat normal, they sent me home. Today, had an appointment with my regular doctor. He said that I'm mild anemic and things will slowly get better overtime. I have another appointment to go to tomorrow and that's with my bariatric surgeon. Almost everyday, im having nausea. Making it a little difficult to take my medication/vitamins and eat/drink. If I knew my body would be going through this, I never would have did this!
  22. Actually, I have 2 questions: 1) I had a gastric sleeve almost 5 years ago; after losing 60 lbs., my pannus changed size & shape, becoming EXTREMELY uncomfortable. I stopped losing weight, gained back 20 lbs., and fortunately maintained my net 40 lbs. weight loss. Does anyone know if I can has DS after a gastric sleeve? 2) I originally wanted DS but the bariatric surgeons in my area did bypass or sleeve only. I live in eastern Washington State; does anyone know of surgeons anywhere around my area (WA state, Idaho, Montana, or Oregon) that perform DS?

    Hurry Up and Wait!

I decided to have surgery during the summer of 2014, but I had to change insurance policies to one that covered it - and that wouldn't take effect until January 2015. The new company required a six- month supervised diet as part of its list of requirements for bariatric surgery, but they said I could do that before I switched over to them if I wanted, and it would still count - so I decided to at least do that much while I was waiting to be switched over. So I officially started up in the bariatric program as soon as my new insurance kicked in, in January 2015 (with my six-month diet already under my belt). I got through all the other requirements by late March, I think - and they said I could have surgery in late April/early May, but since I worked at a university, my supervisor wanted me to wait until the spring semester was over, so I had it June 3. So in other words, it was six months from the time I entered the program until I had my surgery - but I could have had it about four months after starting the program if it wasn't for work. But again, I'd already had my six-month supervised diet requirement finished before I started the program (not all insurance companies require the supervised diet, though...but many do)
  24. Is your gastroenterologist and bariatric surgeon talking? They need to communicate. As someone who has had a LOT of post surgery complications, I do sympathise a lot. Hang in there, but get these people to talk to each other and get them to come up with some answers.

    RNY surgery question

Correct me if I'm wrong but I recently heard a bariatric surgeon say that bypassing the stomach leaves it in a 24/7 fasting state. I'm big on all the benefits of fasting so knowing that fact was exciting to me. I'd love to hear a more in depth teaching on the subject along with reestablishing a healthy microbiome, setpoint etc. via surgery.
