Almost 9 years out...
The Greater Fool replied to raiderjules's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Congratulations on your success. Route 44 Slushie Lime Ade... a special treat we do about once a month, along which Church's chicken. :sigh: My surgeon approached the 30 minute thing as more of a suggestion than hard and fast rule. I drink when I'm thirsty, and I sip a bit during meals. It's not the end of the world to do your own thing if you are doing well. Anemia does seem to be a Gastric Bypass thing, at least it was for me a couple times over the years. Passing out is fun. I put a hole in the wall with my head once. Iron usually does the trick. I take slow-FE just once a week which seems to do the trick. Good luck, Tek -
4 day Post opt. July 7th. My original date was supposed to be June 22 but my father pasted away on the 18th of June and I had to post pone my surgery for an additional two weeks. I ate up to the last day and stopped just to make sure I had room for those two drinks I had to do on top of drinking two bottles of Magnesium so I cam flush out my system right away. I am allergic to anesthesia so when they gave it to me they also gave me a Steroid. My surgery was at 8am and I was up by 11:30am. Tons of heart burn from steroid but the hospital took care of that right away. They feed me pain killer through my IV which made me have the best sleep ever. Fast forward four days now and I have alreadyost 16lbs, have a lot more energy and sticking to my diet plan. I am so ready for food but I know that will have to wait until my check up next week. Only thing that sucks is wearing long dresses. I am not a dress girl, I like my jeans but my Stitches have to heal. I am happy that I decided to do this.

How long did it take for your blood sugar to go below 100 at morning fasting? I had my blood work done today. My regular dr is also testing me for the antibodies to see if I could be type 1 diabetic because autoimmune runs in my family. (My mom got type 1 at 75 years old just last year) my sugar is still running around 150 in the mornings. I'm keeping positive thoughts that it is just type 2 and will eventually go down to a normal level.

Favorite sugar free and other low calorie sauces
kcuster83 replied to ShoppGirl's topic in Food and Nutrition
I think all of the SF sauces have a weird after taste. I have tried so many and have had no luck. I just use regular sauce because I barely use it anyway. When I do, I measure it out and make sure I know exactly how much I use. I think the bigger problems of our past was using 1/4 cup or more at a time rather than the 2 TBSP servings. Those calories add up FAST! -
Weight isn't coming off as fast as I thought it would. I've had a few days of not feeling well but so far only 1 dumping episode.
-
You may not be ready yet. Some need a little longer on a stage before moving forward. It all depends on how you heal. Did you have the purée stage before soft? Though plans can be different, many of us go through two week cycles of liquids, purée then soft. Also your soft food may not be soft & moist enough. Think slow cooked stews, braises, etc. & foods with lots of sauces & gravies. What you’re experiencing are the early stages of the foamies. They usually occur if you eat too fast, too much or eat something that is too dry or coarse.

So far I have slowly made changes to 1.)only eating fast food maybe once a week. I would have it 5+ meals a week last year. 2.) reducing most processed foods (nothing is off limits, but if it’s not healthy, be mindful of the portion) 3.) not eating when not hungry 4.) I used to drink a glass of sweet tea a day, dropped that to occasional - drinking water or unsweet tea almost exclusively except for my weekly Margarita:) I am on a diabetic medicine which has helped with the process because it has changed the way my stomach processes food and helped me to make the lifestyle changes now. Thanks to that I have lost 50 already and hoping to loose more by the time for surgery. my next step is to try to do a test run on the pre op diet so I can not have my eating issues complicate matters when time comes (which hopefully will let me loose more) it’s a journey I want to be success at so bad!!

Our bodies all recover differently. Best advice I can give is to give in and rest and take naps as needed. Your body recovers while you sleep so the more you do it now when your body is calling out for it the quicker you will recover in the long run. As far as food for energy, you may or may not be able to talk them into letting you bring in a protein shake but when you get a little further out you can usually sneak in a beef Jerky or a protein bar for longer outings where you truly can’t find a healthy option. Post surgery I ALwAYS have a cooler in my car packed full of healthy options I can run back to even if I don’t expect to be out all day. If I leave the house, I’m ready for hours with my Yeti packed just in case. And I always bring my favorite salad dressing and my sugar free bbq sauce with me so if I have to do fast food I don’t have to use their high calorie sauces. I find several healthy options at Chick-fil-A. Any of their Salads with grilled chicken or grilled nugget kids meal with fresh fruit.

In 5th week and Up came Breakfast 😕
ShianRaineDrop posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone. So I'm in my fifth week post OP and have been doing extremely well with food choices, slow eating, careful chewing, and sticking within the parameters my nutritionist and my doctor have given me. This morning, I tried eating an over medium egg (cooked whites, soft & runny yolk) over the shakshuka I have been eating all week for breakfast. (It is a pureed form of shakshuka with sausage that I've had zero trouble with over the last week.) I keep seeing that dumping syndrome seems to be only related to too much sugar. Since I'm not a sweets fan, that's not a problem for me. However, after just throwing up most of what I just ate, and it being the first time it's happened the entire post OP time, I'm curious if dumping syndrome can include things that our new tumtums just don't want? I may have eaten too fast. The yolk could have been too undercooked (I've been doing soft but cooked yolk up until this morning), or maybe even it was too much food? It was about and ounce and a half of pureed Shakshuka with a sprinkling of cheddar cheese and an egg cooked over medium, (no frying so no oil..just a small egg sized non stick pan and then a bit of warm water to help cook the whites) and that's it. I started feeling flushed with sharp belly pains (not just where baby tum tum lives) and thought I had to go to the restroom. Once I got to the bathroom, I started getting cold sweats, sharp pains, then that weird tingly feeling I get around my jaw when I'm getting ready to throw up. Now that I have thrown up, I feel fine but I definitely don't want that to become a thing, especially as well as I've been doing after getting through the 2 miserable liquids weeks. I'm curious about other's experiences, if I should be worried, and if this could also be a type of dumping syndrome? Because my baby tum tum absolutely said hell to the no, and dumped that breakfast right out from the top. (Edit: oh yeah, I should probably lay off the red sugar free Gatorade that I love so I don't freak out and think it's blood, right? 😂 I think I'll go back to water with a couple splashes of sugar free cranberry juice for flavor.) -
The ENTIRE bagel???? Like, SERIOUSLY?!
ImsexyandIknowit replied to idk4w's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I could really eat anything I wanted to 6 months out...however I found out I was not being mindful about WHAT I eating AT ALL. so when I started to really think about what I was putting in my tummy it all changed for me...I am a carb girl so I totally stopped all carbs and stayed around 30 grams per day and the weight started to fall of. This however to took almost 2 years to get my body and mind in the right place. I know when I do not chew my food and eat too fast my pouch tells me so. So yes you can but no don't do it. N not worth it. Load up on protein and veg first and then maybe later if you do want that bagel then you can have it. But by then you mostly won" t want it... Everyone is different best of luck on you journey -

How fast did you eat it? Remember it takes time for messages to get through & maybe you ate so quickly you didn’t get the message until it was too late. It can be easy to do when not eating mindfully. I know I’ve done it & bet others have too. Some days we slip and that’s okay. See it as being a good reminder. My full signal takes a while to kick in (up to 90 mins sometimes I discovered to my discomfort) so it would be easy to eat more than I need. I try to eat until I’ve had enough not until I’m full or I feel my restriction. It’s why I ask myself if I need the next bite or just want it. I’ve served all my meals to a portion size since surgery three years ago. Though some days I eat less of my serve. Like I haven’t eaten all my usual serve of my breakfast once this week. Didn’t want it. I ate what I needed & put the leftovers in the fridge. Certainly you are able to physically eat more as you progress until you are able to consume about a recommended portion of most if not all foods. How long until this happens is an individual thing. For me it was a few months after I reached goal. -
Greetings! I just had my first surgical consult and am working my way toward an October 2022 surgery. I want this to truly be a success, so before a knife touches me I want to get in a better place in my own head and face some of the things which got me to this state of super morbid obesity. Over the past few months I have worked hard to work on my issues with food. I have issues with emotional and binge eating, eating too much fast food, too much processed food and too much sugar. I have used a lot of techniques. Always shifting to try to beat take care of me. Some things I have done include mental health journaling, making no foods “bad” or off limits, practicing mindfulness and self forgiveness, using pre-packaged/portioned grab and go foods (nuts and cheese snack packs, lunchables, apples and peanut butter etc), slowly reducing my fast food dependence. it has been rewarding so far to tackle those issues. I have lost 50 lbs so far. Sept 2021 I was 452 lbs, in pain and miserable in my own body. I now am 398, in and less discomfort. I am looking forward to being in the right mindset for surgery so that I can ultimately achieve all of my goals and change my life. What is your experiences with dealing with food issues both before and after surgery??

Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)
SummerTimeGirl replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
UPDATE: It's been a while since I've been on and posted so I figured I'd so so quick. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has changed for me!!! Still stuck at 235-ish (and have been since the end of last Oct) and can't seem to lose anymore no matter what the hell I do!! I did start Rybelsus a few months ago and made it through a month of the 3mg dose and a month through the 7mg does. Then, when my doc put me on the final dose of 14mg a few weeks ago, my insurance suddenly decided it was no longer gonna cover it!! Not sure why the allowed the other doses/months and not the new one. Doc and I are trying to appeal it (cause it costs about $1300 out of pocket a month without insurance and has no generic). Their one reason was that I was NOT a uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetic. They also said I needed to be in a weigh loss program or seeing a weight loss doctor in order to have it approved for weight loss reasons. I asked my family doc if my surgeon qualifies as that and so he sent him a messaged asking the same thing. Just wondering if it is a matter of the surgeon prescribing it vs. my family doc. Who knows. Anyway, just waiting on hearing back about that. Not even sure that will help me either. Don't know what else to do and just trying to accept the fact that I most likely will be at this weight forever. Which SUCKS!!! I wanted to get down to at least 180. I'm swimming damn near 4 hours every day or walking for at least an hour and of course depending on who, doc wise, I speak to they each have something different to say. Walk less, walk more, walk slow, walk fast, do weights, don't do weights......UUUUUgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh! I've tried it all. Upped water, lowered water, ate more protein, ate less protein, ate more food, ate less food, just don't know what else to do so pretty much just been living my life doing whatever. Haven't been logging my food for months but not doing anything really different food wise than I was when I was logging. Just wondered if being so strict and regimented was maybe causing the stall so I stopped but I guess that wasn't the case either. Anyway, that's that. -
Got my date - 27th July

I'm also scheduled for sleeve on July 27th! Newly added date, so everything seems to be coming at me fast! A little overwhelmed! -
Anyone who is over 40 and has a BMI over 50? Looking for someone in similar circumstances to me, so I can get an idea of what to expect in terms of weight loss. Even better if you have a success story!! Starting to feel real nervous over here, surgery date is approaching so fast ...

How long after gastric sleeve are you at risk of getting Dumping Syndrome ?
Arabesque replied to PM2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That tightness isn’t dumping, that’s your restriction. With dumping you experience cold sweats, heart palpitations, diarrhoea &/or vomiting, dizziness. It can last for hours. You’ll really know when you experience it. Sometimes when your restriction kicks in you can get the foamies but it’s more spitting up saliva & maybe regurgitating that last little bit you ate not vomiting everything you ate per se. Dumping occurs by eating something high sugar or high fat. Your restriction & foamies usually occurs not because of eating a specific food type but because you ate too much, too fast or something too dry or coarse. As I said in my earlier post it usually passes quickly after you bring up that last bite that caused the problem. Dumping is more common with a bypass & it isn’t as common with a gastric sleeve. You’re only a couple of months out so your tummy could still be pretty sensitive which resulted in vomiting. I used to get nauseous & vomit quite often in the morning … usually after taking my multi vitamin. ☹️ https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dumping-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20371915 -
Portion sizes
Amanda Purser replied to Amanda Purser's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This time I scrambled my egg and was barely able to eat one. I try my best to eat slowly so I don't over eat and swallow air but it's hard I always ate fast before surgery. I plan on trying soup again soon just giving it a few days before I do. Sometimes I worry if I even had the surgery done[emoji1787] I know that sounds crazy. I'm just winging it here and I feel lost a lot. I had my surgery done in Mexico so I don't really have a Dr I can call and ask questions. I did email the nutrionalist but she didn't seem too concerned with the amount I was eating so IDK. Sent from my BE2028 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Funny / Bad Foot Nightmare
ShoppGirl replied to doobie31's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Glad it was just a dream. Guess you went to sleep a little anxious about your post surgery restrictions. I was a little worried too because I do eat sometimes without thinking at night so I put a towel through the handles on the fridge to remind me. I do this on days I have blood work or surgery and need to fast as well. Just something out of place to get your attention so hopefully you take a second to remember why it’s there. -
I am too! I thought I wouldn’t be, from everything I’ve read, but that’s not the case. I’m 12 days post op and cooking every night is killing me. On Friday I can finally do purées and it can’t come fast enough!!

Eating too much? 3 - 4 weeks Post op
Veritas34 replied to Veritas34's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thank you all ! I called and spoke to nurse. She said I should be doing no more than 400- 600 calories but what I told her I ate she didn't seem too concerned. I can't imagine eating less at this point unless I dropped back down to liquids only. Its INSANE how even the good food im eating is adding up calories so fast! -
Now I'm feeling guilty I'm not walking more 😂😂😂 Pretty sure my body can handle it but I just don't have the patience. But my exercise of choice is UJam (a variation of Zumba). My wife (not irrational) is concerned I'm going to jump too fast back into exercise, so once I have my first post-op appointment on Thursday, they (my wife and surgeon) should clear me to get back to my favorite activity regularly. I can't wait to see what it feels like 40 pounds lighter.

Smanky replied to Candigrl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, this is 100% normal. Take it from a serial staller (I also stalled at week 2 and every second week after) and slow loser (in that I've lost my weight at the same rate I would on a standard old-school calorie counting diet). Manage your expectations, and don't compare yourself to other people who are losing fast and aren't stalling. Doing that will only make you unhappy. Focus instead on the positives as they come, and they DO come. Feeling better, clothes getting looser, sleeping better, skin clearing up because you're not poisoning yourself with processed sugar anymore! The weight will come off. Distract yourself with activities that aren't about your weight, and stay off the scale for a couple of weeks. The stall will break. -
Still feel it, but getting better every day, thanks. Had my first "workout" today. My aerobic class. Felt so good to sweat again, even doing only a couple of songs at half speed. Miraculous how fast the recovery time is, isn't it?

lizonaplane replied to Candigrl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many people think they are a "slow loser" but in fact they just have unrealistic expectations from shows like My 600 Lb Life, which features people who lose "fast" because they are much bigger than your average WLS patient. You may still be a slow loser; I can't tell how much of your 33 lb weight loss was before surgery, but I lost about 9 lbs on average per month for the first 6 months after surgery, and my surgery center said I was doing great! Try to focus on things you can control, like eating and drinking and exercising the way your surgery center recommended, and don't worry about the scale. You might also focus on how your clothes fit or other "non-scale victories". You might also consider reaching out to your surgery center to make sure you're on track, and consider seeing a bariatric therapist. Good luck! -
