    Unrealistic expectations

You must give it time to work , after about a month I noticed my weight loss , and please always follow your portion rules and eat correctly and drink water as they say to . I'm almost 13 years out , I lost 130 pounds and I have gained back 60 of that and I'm struggling to get that off now . I am resetting my pouch , and it's NOT easy ! I have also heard and experienced that losing weight gained after this surgery is harder then if you didn't have it. Always remember your pouch stretches back out , every bite over your measures amount is another bit of a stretch , and our pouches are not made of steel. Follow the rules it works , easy fix , NO not even close , you still must eat right , excersise, I will say it will give you a start to a new life , BUT , as with any weight loss or gain , one must eat correctly and it's a permanent life change you MUST commit to . Good luck to all

    Weight Gain For Tom

I know this might be a stupid question but I never paid attention to it when I was heavier but is it normal to gain 3+ lbs during that time of the month? I got on my scale this morning and I was shocked to see the gain and I've been doing everything right.

    Erosion

Is that when they put the scope down your throat and into your stomach? I'm pregnant so I know they won't be able to do anything like that until after I have the baby but I had an upper GI when all of these stomach pains started and I just needed to see if that would show erosion but after reading apparently erosion doesn't cause pain? Just weight gain? Who knows

    Metformin

I had my sleeve done in November and have only lost 11lbs. I have spoken with the nutritionist and my diet is good. I do exercise, but could do more, I as so very disappointed with my small loss I could cry (I do cry) The only thing left to question is that I take Antipsychotics for bipolar disorder. They are known for weight gain. I am on one that has a weight neutral profile, but the surgeon thinks this is why I havent lost. My family psychiatrist doesnt agree. The surgeon has suggested taking Metformin to see if that might help. I am considering the idea, but not sure if it will actually do anything,. My fasting blood sugar is 95 so I am not even prediabetic. Has anyone tried Metformin before? What were your results.
  5. Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS about six years ago. It took quite a few years before that to find a physician who actually believed that there was something wrong with me besides just weight gain. I had my band on Monday and am doing well. In order to get the procedure covered (BMI is 35) my primary care physician and endocrinologist worked with my surgeon. Both wrote letters on my behalf and in the end, the surgeon himself actually spoke to the insurance company. I am glad I persued the surgery, as my PCOS symptoms were getting worse, despite being on large doses of Metformin, etc. Good Luck.

    Once Bitten, Twice Shy

I'm 18.5 weeks pregnant. I won't have any issues losing the pregnancy weight. I'll just low carb it again until I get the weight off. I gained a few pounds over the holidays and dropped those pounds in a little over a week just by cutting alcohol and carb consumption. As for the breakdown of weight gain with a pregnancy, this is what they've outlined for my weight gain: Maternal Fat- 7lbs Baby- 6-8lbs (average is 7.5lbs) Increases Fluid (blood volume)-2-4 ( a mother's blood volume typically doubles during pregnancy) Amniotic Fluid- 1-1.5lbs Placenta- 2lbs Breast tissue/mammary system weight increase - 1-2lbs Watch out for the ROSE procedure, it has an 85% failure rate. This is also discussed heavily on the obesityhelp.com Revision forum. ERNY (extended RNY, where they remove more intestine to start malabsorption again since intestinal adaptation has taken over at this point for you) is also an option. They will shorten your common channel by another 50-100cm. You definitely want to know before you agree to a revision if you have a pouch or stoma dilation because if you have actual mechanical failure with your RNY even a band over the pouch isn't going to do much because once the food passes through the band pouch into your RNY pouch, you will still be able to more food, and your malabsorption is gone. As for Jerusalem clinic, honestly, out of over 3 years on weight loss forums, I have never read of one patient having a RNY take down and revision to the VSG being performed there and honestly that is possibly why they are recommending the band over the bypass pouch to give you restriction again. Seriously, I can name 4 surgeons worldwide that are experienced with these surgeries, and with self-pay patients the cost just for the surgeon run upwards of 20-30k because it is such a complicated and exhausting surgery to take down an old RNY. I promise I researched revisions for months once I knew my band had to come out. The risks for complications especially leaks from scar tissue and adhesions literally quadruples with revisions vs. a virgin, unaltered stomach/intestinal tract. I had a leak with a band revision to VSG after only having the band for 8 months, and actually lost more stomach tissue because of the damage the band had done. My surgeon was experienced with revisions, and I happen to be a statistic of his that I'd like to take back. I was his first and only VSG leak so it can happen even with really experienced surgeons. I'm not slamming Jerusalem Clinic, but revisions are super tricky, complicated, and I would hate to see you fork out the money, get a surgery that is as high maintenance as the BOB procedure and then continue to struggle with your weight and be looking at or for another surgery. There have been RNY to VSG revisions performed due to reactive hypoglycemia symptoms and diagnosis after RNY, but again, it's a very complicated surgery with high risks. Just choose carefully, and continue to research your options.

    LAP BAND REPLACEMENT

HAD LAP BAND SURGERY 5 YEARS AGO. EVERTHING WENT GREAT UNTILL ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. FOUND THAT I COULD EAT ALL I WANTED AND GAINED ALL MY WEIGHT BACK. THE DOCTOR FELT IT WAS MY PORT AND REPLACED IT IN JUNE OF 2010. STILL HAD WEIGHT GAIN. THE DOCTOR DID A DYE TEST AND FOUND IT WAS MY BAND LEAKING. I'M DUE FOR BAND REPLAACEMENT ON 1/11/2011. HAS ANYONE HAD THERE BAND REPLACED?
  8. A VSG procedure results in reducing the capacity of your stomach. That's it. That's all it does. I have NEVER read of a true "failed" sleeve. Stalls are normal. Failing to meet goal is not uncommon. Gaining all your weight back can happen. But NONE of these so called failures are the result of your sleeve not doing what it's supposed to do. "failures" are thpically the result of poor choices, unrealistic expectations, certain medications that cause weight gain, and/or other medical conditions. However, if you can eat 4-6 cups of food in one sitting, then yes, you have a failed sleeve. And, like cowgirljane mentioned, you can't possibly declare weight loss success or failure until you are at the very least a year or two out. And true success is really never reached....you not failing your sleeve is a challenge to be met every day for the rest of your life.

    Tamoxifen and Sleeves

Hello Ladies, I'm a breast cancer survivor and have been on tamoxifen for just a little over a year. My entire medical team is on board with me having the surgery and my scheduled date is July 2. I'll resume tamoxifen two weeks post op and am curious about some of the side effects and how it may impact my results i.e., tamoxifen causes weight gain; that metallic taste that you get when you first start taking it, does it worsen with weight loss surgery, etc. I'd appreciate anyone sharing their experience. Thanks so much!
  10. I find out today if the surgeon will let me do three months instead of six for preop. I'm so nervous. I would LOVE to have this by the end of the year. I have a plane trip next week and I'm tired of the anxiety and being the biggest person at my new job. But I blessed the insurance does not excluded it. If it is six it will be ok but I'll be afraid holiday weight gain. Fingers crossed!! Thanks.
  11. I got the sleeve in October 2017. I was down 135lbs and it felt great. Last April I started to gain a little back. I wasn’t surprised since I wasn’t being as strict as I had been. Unfortunately, it has snowballed and I have gained 35lbs back. I feel like I never had the surgery and my sweet tooth is out of control. Could I have stretched my stomach out back to the size it was? How can I shrink it? Help! Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Weight gain

If you have a sweet tooth and that is what is causing the overeating and possibly the weight gain, consider stopping all sugar. For many people, if they do not eat it, they do not crave it. Some people find they need to give up fruit and artificial sweeteners too, but I didn't find that personally. Keep the sweets OUT OF YOUR HOUSE! If someone else in your house NEEDS sweets, have them eat them somewhere not around you and ask them to put them in a certain cupboard that you don't go into, or keep them in their car or something. Probably you have not stretched your stomach. You don't need to "shrink" your stomach (and really, there is no way to do that). You need to find a way to avoid the foods that cause you to overeat. Can you distract yourself when you have a craving? Talk a walk, watch a YouTube exercise video, take a hot shower/bath, read a book, color, etc? For many people, once they wait an hour by distracting themselves, they usually can make it without eating. You may also consider meeting with a therapist who specializes in eating disorder, or call your original surgery center for help. I have noticed that not everyone has these options, but you do have the option to avoid sweets (I have a sweet tooth too, so I understand!) Good luck!
  13. Thanks do you think it’s to late if I have messed up. I fear I have stretched out my stomach I know it’s only been 3 months but I never thought I have any weight gain especially not this early. However it wasn’t the same scale but I know my clothes fit a little snugger then the week before. I also was on birth control that gave me crazy side affects
  14. Did you gained weight during your 6 months visit? If so did you still get approve ? I have amerigroup they don't require me to lose but I'm afraid I gained last months I was on my period, and I gained this month :/ and on my period too
  15. I'm so glad my surgeon doesn't cancel surgery dates due to a weight gain in the pre-op stage. The reason most of us are having or had WLS is because we struggle to lose in the first place.

    Any Ideas? Been Sick!

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you are having. If you are on an IV then your weight gain is probably related to fluid retention. At this point you should just focus on getting better and don't worry about what the number on the scale says.
  17. (I poated this on the pregnancy page as well in case youve seen it.) Im on depo birthcontrol and I think its causeing me from loosing weight. Im 196lbs ive lost 63lbs since October 30, 2014. So im about 7 months post op. My goal is 160 and I know i shouldnt compare to others but i feel like i should have lost more by now and be much closer to goal. Could it be my Depo? I know some side effects were always being hungry and i know people experianced weight gain (non WLS patients) and im always hungry! Thoughts?
  18. I suffer from depression and was diagnosed with it last year. I was put on several medications for it trying to find the right one and I gained a ton of weight in the process. Finally I am on a medication that works and weight gain is not one of the side effects. I am finally at a place mentally that I am able to try to get the weight off. My doctor checked my band yesterday. She did a complete drain and found 1.5cc less in there than they had recorded should be in there. The doctor and nurses where not concerned with this. They said it happens sometimes since I haven't had a fill for 2 years. They said there is no leak. She also told me my band is at a weird angle and not sitting where it should be. She is not considering it a slip and says it will still work where it is. She said the barium was passing through fine. She refilled the band and put and additional 1cc in there. So, liquid diet for 48 hours.... I go back in a month for follow up. One of the nurses was so rude to my husband. He was asking questions about the angle of the band and could that be why I get food stuck sometimes. She started going over what the band does like we are stupid and haven't been going through this for the past 3 years. She also said that in the future if I cant eat solid food I should just purée everything. Then she said he must be making my food too dry when he cooks. He ended up storming out of the office. I just don't know anymore what to do. I am at the point where I just want them to take this stupid thing out of me. It worked at first but then I gained all the weight a lost back and then some. The mean nurse also told me that I need to be careful with my insurance because I didn't come in right away when I started gaining weight. Well, sorry lady I wa kinda SAD and couldn't get out of bed. I was also in a hospital out patient program for 3 months and I am finally stable. Ugh! I'm just sooo frustrated and needed to vent.

    Spouce Issues: Input appriciated

My DH tried to join the bandwagon with me when I started out. He gave up cokes too. 7 months later, he drinks them, but we don't keep them in the house (for my sake). So he just buys bottles and drinks at work and at home whatever is left over. Still less than he use to. He also eats whatever I make, or wherever I can go (I don't eat fast food anymore unless it's Wendy's chili). We were eating fastfood 2-3x a day before. So naturally, he was losing a little weight. He has gained weight since I met him (use to be washboard, now it's a little tire ) Went from 30 waist pants to 36 now. I have GENTLY said something every once in while- mostly due to me having to buy him new pants sizes. He doesn't care, doesn't take offense, but he doesn't see the weight gain. His brothers have called him 'fat' at a family gathering once (imagine how my 300lb+ self felt at that time.. I was sitting there). But anyway.. guess my point is, see how he feels about it. Maybe bring it up casually about him exercising with you (I tried this, he's wishy washy about it). Tell him you worry about his Cholesterol and see if he's willing to eat better with you. The worst he can do is say no. Don't be judgey or mean about it, just casual In my situation, things seem to just be happening. He has told me 2 times in the past month (he weighed himself) that he is losing weight. If your DH is eating with you or where you go (like mine), he's going to tend to lose weight due to better food choices. If you make dinner, don't make you your good healthy food, then make him his 'regular' kind of food. I only cook 1 dinner, and if he doesn't like it, he doesn't eat hah hah! Portion is another thing, of course, but if it's a ton of healthy food instead of a ton of fat and calories.. see where I'm going? Good luck!

    Banded in 2009

Dear Banded, Don't be upset. I had the same exact same thing happen to me. Only I had my band in for 6 years..I found a Dr. and his office that really wanted to help me. I fought for what I wanted and got it. As of May 18th 2015 I got my revision with a better band. You have to fight for everything you want as far as this surgery. Don't be upset about you weight gain because that will help you get on step closer to a revision. Just please fight for what you want. If you live on Long Island perhaps I can really help you. Please e mail with any questions you have. @msannie720@aol.com. I will be glad to help. I know what you are going through and it's not fun. Just hang in there. Your revision will come,

    Goal Jeans

I laughed when I saw your post. Not at you but at myself. Never really made it a goal but it has been in the back of my mind. And this tells you how long I have been fighting the weight. I have been hauling a pair of jeans around for over 20 years that I bought and wore exactly once.I always wonder if I will fit in them again. They were the begining of there at the beigining of the weight gain....maybe at the end too.

    Weight Up

This morning I was 194 (up 2 pounds from last week), this is the first time since by band that I have had a weight gain. The scale has been stuck, not moved went down ¼ of a pound but at my offical Friday weigh in I never was more that the previouse week. I have had a few diviations from my “diet” the past week and am not as regular as I should be so I know it’s not a real weight gain but still I am disgusted. My brain understands all of the above but the scared part of my that worries that I will fail the band is stomping around saying I told you so ..why bother with all the pain, expense to just gain the weight back go eat something to make you feel better….i won’t listen to her I had Cereal for Breakfast, cup of vegatable Soup for lucnch and some nuts a little while ago as a afternoon snack….will have a normal dinner and try ti shut up the voices in my head……wonder if my screwed up relationship with food will ever be “normal”

    5 1/2 OUNCES?

You might consider that you don't want to eat to max capacity Full isn't the feeling we should be shooting for. I always try to remind myself to go for "comfortably unhungry" rather than full. Basically what I was told by my surgeon was that while stretching the sleeve is not really likely to happen under normal circumstances anything is possible if you try hard enough and he told me the quickest way to do that was by pushing it all the time, eating till full every time. That's why I'm just a huge proponent of weighing. I've said it before and I will repeat it here If you limit whatever you are going to eat to 3-4 ounces its very unlikely that you are ever going to experience weight gain and/or sleeve dilation of any sort.

33 BMI and scheduled for VG...

I have a semi low BMI, I cannot lose any weight during my preop, still following NUT diet though to maintain in a healthy manner. I am with WTgirl,I have lost the weight, gained it back, plus more. I was thin most of my life. I just can't do this to myself anymore. Out of control eating, being much heavier and growing ,and health issues creeping in.These are the reasons I am using this as my tool, I know I can stick to a diet if I have some support, and I WANT this so badly!!
  25. I had lap band surgery 11 days ago (7/10/2008). I was on a liquid diet for 4 days prior to my surgery. Between the liquid diet and the recovery after my surgery I lost 23 pounds. I have now gained 5 pounds back?? Has anyone else experienced weight gain prior to their first fill. I guess I am just confused and maybe even a little discouraged because I feel like I am not hardly eating yet gained weight. Can someone please tell me, is this normal, has anyone else experienced this? Does this mean I am going to fail? Prior to Sugery: 304 lbs :seeya: Today: 285 lbs :ihih:
