Can any vegetarians explain to me how you get your protein in ?
mistysj replied to OHHLALA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends what extent of vegetarianism. Eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt if you are using dairy. Beans, nuts, lentils, soy, tofu, tempeh, quinoa, textured vegetable protein, sprouted wheat are all vegan. Some vegetables have some protein. You need to use a lot of sources because vegetable proteins are not "complete" like vegetable proteins (they don't contain all the amino acids). They are missing different ones so you can get all the amino acids with variety. -

Calling all vegetarians............
kagead replied to esv2000's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't had beef or pork in over 20 years, but I am not a vegetarian. I eat very little chicken or turkey and eat tons of fish. That said, I eat like a vegetarian 90% of the time. Make tofu, seitan and Morningstar Farms/Boca products your friends. It is worth the investment to buy a bunch of varieties and figure out which ones you like. They sell them at all major grocery stores including Trader Joe's. It is tough to move away from a mostly carb-based diet, but the suggestions offered here are good ones. There are tons of great vegetarian recipes on allrecipes.com and vegetariantimes.com. Good luck! kagead -
Calling all vegetarians............

I stopped eating meat after my lap band surgery because meat would always get stuck and make me feel sick. Every morning I have a Fiber one english muffin with Peanut Butter. I find the peanut butter really "sticks to your ribs" and keeps me full all morning. For lunch I might have so Kashi Cereal mixed with a non-fat yogurt (there's Protein in both the Kashi cereal and the yogurt). And for dinner I will make a salad with some vinegar/low-cal dressing with some cottage cheese on top. Other vegetarian things that keep me full: A toasted pita with hummus Bananas, apples, pears and other high-fiber fruits Granola bars oatmeal Popcorn (I've never had a stuck issue with popcorn, although I know a lot of bandsters have) Whole grain Pasta with marinara sauce Steamed veggies Brown Rice I would say if you are a big bread person, definitely convert to whole grains. If the first ingredient on the label reads "whole" - like "whole wheat flour" - then its a whole grain. It makes a world of difference in keeping you fuller for longer. -
6 days post op and wisdom tooth!
JerseyCityGal replied to Audriana661's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 4 days post-op and am feeling so weak I can hardly believe it. For me, vegetarian broth is the only thing I can get down. I can't bend over because of the incisions, so of course I keep dropping things on the floor like there is no tomorrow. Get to a dentist before you progress to an abscess or something. Teeth are nothing to mess around with. -
We did Vegan for about 15 months back in 1995. It was hard when it came to Thanksgiving. We did make it through though. You just need to stick to eating a lot of beans and nuts. You can now, even order a Vegan"turkey", I can't remember what they call it. But, if you are interested, check online. Also, 7th Day Adventist's websites. Adventists are Vegan or vegetarians, we lived in Washington, DC and they were easily found. Good luck!!!!Karen

You can get your protein through beans, nuts, tofu and other products that are made for vegetarians.

I Am Not Understanding....

Precious, everybody's sleeve is different. I never counted anything (and still don't), mostly because I have to eat what my sleeve will allow--and, for good or ill, it doesn't let me eat foods that aren't good for me (can't tolerate fried foods, most flour products, sweets). However, it also doesn't let me eat good-for-me foods like chicken, eggs, tuna, etc., so it's a trade off. Since you're having such a difficult time trying to do the "standard" things, why not try something else? Maybe aim to get some Protein through vegetable sources--get some bean Soup and zap it in the blender and heat that up and eat it. Split pea with ham. Vegetarian chili that has TVP (textured vegetable protein) instead of meat--zap them up so they're smooth and try those. My point is, low-carbing will work for a good number of folks, but not everyone. If your sleeve won't tolerate a lot of the typical protein foods (tuna, chicken, whatever), you obviously can't eat those, and a lot of very healthy, non-animal-protein-based foods are going to come with some carbs. Since you can't keep a lot of solid stuff down yet, I say don't worry about your carbs too much and just try to find a set of foods you can eat that are tolerable. I lived for the first few months on yogurt, spoons of Peanut Butter, cottage cheese, and soup--literally ate soup every day. You'll be glad later that your sleeve is picky--right now, it STINKS, but as you heal and progress, you'll be happy to have that picky thing that keeps you from eating what you shouldn't. Hang in there, my friend!! -

I have read the book. Some interesting points brought up. I tried going vegetarian, but I like my meat based protein (poultry and seafood). I am only 3 weeks post op, so when my diet is freed up a bit, I will do plant based protein as well....believe it or not, I am craving edemame (sp?). I believe "everything in moderation." I enjoy poultry or seafood over beef, which can get you burned at the "steak", living here in the midwest! Extremes can get us all in trouble. -
Anyone attempting the vegetarian / vegan lifestyle after WLS? I was a vegetarian prior but started eating poultry to meet my NUT planned diet (high protein low carb low fat )
But now I am longing to return to the life style.
Any tips?

Vegetarian isn't too hard since you can have whey protein shakes, eggs, dairy. Veganism is much harder since the vegan-friendly shakes are less palatable and you have to be extra cautious about getting complete proteins.

No, you certainly didn't mess up! I was a nervous freak about this in the beginning and my doc set me straight. He said as long as you don't eat until "stuffed" and the food was nutritious then you're fine. Cream of Crab soup probably had a lot of calories (cream) but other than that it beats the heck out of ice cream or something ridiculous!! Yes, I ate a lot of oatmeal in my mushie's stage. Oatmeal is great for you...just eat the kind you cook on the stove. The pre-packaged stuff has too much sugar and isn't usually as nutritious. I also ate vegetarian refried Beans a lot. Cream of Wheat, sugar-free pudding, oatmeal, refried beans, chilli, low fat cottage and ricotta cheese, low fat yogurt, etc. these things were all foods I ate during mushies. Oatmeal and refried beans were the two foods that made me feel satisfied the most. They stick to your ribs and make you feel like you've actually eaten! I think you're doing great and have not done anything "wrong" at all! Good luck and keep us posted!

It’s been six years since I have my surgery. Lost over 100+lbs. However in the past few years, it’s slowly regaining - approx 70lbs up atm. Most because I went vegan for two years and regained a ton because I ate quinoa mostly (carb galore) ughhh...mad at myself for that. I’m a lacto-ovo vegetarian now and looking for some help. Can anyone suggest any tips on how I can jump start my weight loss again? I’m thinking about doing the 5 day pouch test to start.

I'm not going to lie, I struggle with it. Eggs are a great source of protein, but I don't always feel like making them. I buy the Garden Veggie Patties by Morningstar from Costco (they are bigger and have 18g protein). I try to drink one Muscle Milk Lite or Premier Protein daily, but that's not always the case. Cottage cheese and greek yogurt are great sources of protein, as well as beans. I like making salads that are protein packed (spinach, eggs, beans, sunflower seeds, cubed fake meat if I have it). I snack on low-fat string cheese almost daily. A lot of the processed fake meat products have a good deal of protein, but they are also pretty dry so I have to take tiny bites and chew like crazy. They are the #1 thing that makes me PB or in the beginning, get stuck. I have, to date, lost 61 pounds. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian (though I don't drink milk, I do eat dairy products). Before surgery, I was definitely a "starchitarian" so the lap band lifestyle has most definitely helped me lose weight. My body loves the extra protein that I get, and the band limits the amount of starches I can eat. I'll definitely be following this thread to see if more suggestions come through. I would love to hear them!

Pre-op I was always regular. I would go at least 2 - 3 times a day. The first month post-op they weren't as "robust" as they were pre-op but Once I went on day 5 I had 1 BM a day. Once I transitioned to soft foods, I was going ~ 2 times a day. A year out I'm back to normal. I am a vegetarian and eat as clean as possible. The lack of processed foods means it take my body less time to break down food, so depending on what I eat I go 1 -3 every day.

Would our bariatric guidelines help those who haven't had surgery?
Boldilocks replied to rs's topic in The Lounge
Agreeing with he posts about metabolism above. Our guidelines would help some people - but not people with other stuff going on. Post-op, my diet is not that different from pre-op. I've been vegetarian since I was about 8, I have been logging food and exercise daily in MFP for 7 years and keeping to a calorie deficit, I drink the same amount that I did before (124 oz or more a day). My calories are a little lower right now as I was going on 1300 or less a day for the years before surgery, but not much difference. When I went home for the summer, my old friends didn't notice much of a difference in the amounts I eat now and the amounts I used to eat. But I have PCOS and my hormones were beyond messed up - I really believe that surgery was the only thing that was going to work for me. Even with that, it's taking ages for the weight to come off - I was told to expect extremely slow loss, but it was still a bit of a shock how slow compared to others. So now I try not to compare, LOL. -
"the Healthiest Foods Are The Ones That Will Give You The Most Trouble"???
Shackwacky posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I just read that statement in one of the Low BMI'ers thread and thought, "wha?". I am a vegetarian, and for 90% of the time I stick only to whole grains, plain veggies, unaldulterated, sauce free, unprocessed foods. (The other ten percent is for when I eat out, or travel ----- amazing how hard it is to find real food sometimes!) From my consult and my talks with SWLC, I believed that I could continue to eat the way I do now, but that I would be limited in the amount of food I eat. Is this not so? -
I am finding myself getting closer to becoming a vegetarian. I rarely eat meat at this point. All of this is post banding. Before being banded I was a total carnivore but my meat of choice was red meat which I can no longer do. I never ever thought I would ever be writing this post. I never could eat fish and have not been a huge fan of pork or chicken. Chicken at this point is too mediocre for me. Often it is too dry and I have horror stories about being stuck. Even at this time I have no Fluid in my band because of a revision but meat just doesn't do it for me anymore. Is anyone else in the same boat? I do think that I get enough Protein but do admit it is more of a challenge because it tends to get a bit boring. Anyone else? I'd love to hear more.

Am I eating to much?
janinemaire replied to trinhle905's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 7 months out, I think a Boca burger is a great choice. I believe they have around 120 calories and with cheese maybe a extra 80 calories. Also they are high in Protein and Fiber. With spinach maybe the whole thing was 220 good healthy calories. Chicken- 3 oz is about 90 calories and it takes me longer to eat chicken than a boca burger because boca burgers have some carbs so it goes down easier. Sometimes we need a change from pure protein. I love vegetarian sausage, I have that and a egg almost ever morning since I was 2 months out. -

LOVE HUMMUS>>>I use red lentils with my vegetarian...makes a lovely sauce... thanks for the recipe

Hi, I'm vegetarian also (although I have started to eat fish now and again) but as far as the band is concerned you can get plenty of protein in with nuts, seeds, pulses and grains. For a while I found eating basmati rice difficult so I switched to cous cous, after a couple of months I tried rice again and I can eat it fine now. When you are making your Soups (broth) I suggest you put a handful of lentils in with your veggies. Protein drinks are terrific when you are on the liquid stage. A bowl of porridge (oats) with some animal milk on is as protein rich as a piece of quality meat. For the mushie stage I found houmus (blend a tin of chick peas, 2tbl sp sesame seed paste, clove of garlic and juice of 1/2 a lemon add olive oil as you blend) a terrfic protein rich easy to eat food. Good luck on your journey.:glare:

Pictures, and the people who love you
wickedme posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay,, so I know this has been talked about repeatedly but I need to share with people who truly know where I am coming from.... The past two weeks my 7 siblings have been visiting from elsewhere at my dads who lives next to me.. We haven't all been together since "02" and were long overdue. We had a great time going to the fair, doing some work on my dads house, visiting and eating. I went out of my way to make food that was health friendly because we have a variety of eating issues amongst us,, vegetarian, chrons, heart disease, morbid obesity you name it one of us has had it. I am the official cook and love it, but wish I was good at anything but after seeing the family photos that were taken. I was mortified and it really has been devastating to me. I wish I could crop me out of all of them... The worst thing is there ended up being an open discussion about my pending Lap Band Surgery. I have talked with everyone about it except one sister because she worries and I don't want her to until I have a date... Most of them have been supportive, but totally uneducated and have no idea what its all about. One SIL had gone to a seminar and just can't imagine only eating a cup or less of food per meal for the rest of her life. Shes in her late 60's and is comfortable with herself. I on the other hand have two young children and a lot of years to look forward to,, if I get healthy!! I am working at losing right now and am struggling daily to stay on track. The nutrionist would like me to eat 1500 cals a day until 2 weeks before surgery, and I am sticking pretty close to that but it isn't easy. I am currently having some back issues and excercise is out of the question for at least the next few days. So,, after seeing these pictures with me looking soooo horrid I doubt anyone is going to question why I want to have lap band, and if they do I will email them to them. I don't even want to imagine what my husband is going to say, I hope he doesn't see them. With any luck I should have my surgery in November, hopefully before Thanksgiving so I don't have to cook,, we can do something else!! It seems the closer I get to surgery the more desperate I am to have it. I have certainly been in denial for a long time about myself and owning up is killing my spirit. I just keep telling myself that during this time of self realization I am gaining the strength and willpower I will need to succeed and lose all my weight.. I will not sit for another photo until the day before my surgery!!!
