    Food ideas

I was an avid home cook and baker before surgery and am happy to announce I still am after. There's plenty of things we can cook and eat post op still once you're back to eating regular foods. I do protein pasta with a protein of some kind, I did almond flour crust Pizzas, I've done veggie bowls, omelets, burrito bowls, bariatric friendly cake and brownies, broccoli cheddar soup. My fave right now is a bariatric friendly Cobb bowl since I can't eat raw leafy vegetables yet. It has baked peppers and kale, wild rice, avocado, red onion, cherry tomatoes, cheese, boiled egg, olives, vegetarian bacon and a dijon lemon garlic vegan dressing I make. Here's a pic of it. One bowl has about 22 grams of protein, good amount of fiber too. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Poolside nachos. Homemade -2 Mini low carb street tortillas cut into triangles (toasted first in oven) -2.5 oz of vegetarian ground meat -2 oz of refried black beans -2 tablespoons of salsa con queso -1 tablespoon of shredded cheddar -1.5 tablespoons of lite sour cream -Spicy salsa -Fresh diced tomatoes -Pinch of lime over the whole thing Bake all of it together in the oven for 15 minutes on 275F First picture is before I ate, second is what I managed to eat. Was able to eat about 2.5 oz of it getting in 15 grams of protein. Soooo good and protein/fiber filled. The chips are buried under it haha but they exist, I promise! 6. Sounds like we had our surgeries around the same time. I got to my lowest weight of 164 lbs. About a year after surgery. I started out at 325. I gained back about 10 lbs over the last 2 years, and I felt fine in the 170s. I knew that I wasn’t eating my best though- I was eating whatever I wanted in small portions. That’s not how I wanted to live, and I didn’t feel my best. So 2 weeks ago I tried out the 10 Day Pouch Reset diet- not to shrink my pouch, but to get back control of my eating. I ended up losing 6 lbs during those 10 days. I decided to continue eating clean by cutting out most carbs and wine, and sticking with vegetarian way of eating. I feel great and I lost a few more pounds! So I just thought I’d let you know what worked for me- Good luck! You can do whatever you set your mind to! We have already proven that we can be successful after surgery, sometimes we just need to remind ourselves that we are bariatric patients for life who have to constantly work towards maintaining our new bodies and minds!

What NEW things did you eat AFTER the soft diet?

I dunno, I'm not a vegetarian. But what comes to mind is black bean or veggie burgers, without the bun of course. Quinoa, farro and tempeh are complete proteins and tempeh is lower in carbs than quinoa and farro. Maybe something like this, except with a meat substitute. I've made these before with turkey, they're good. I add fresh pico de gallo instead of jarred salsa. Sorry I'm not more helpful with vegetarian protein sources. https://www.skinnytaste.com/turkey-santa-fe-zucchini-boats/
  8. I'm transitioning from the soft diet phase+raw fruit/veg to the permanent/solid diet and now that I've hit that mark, I'm kind of blanking on what new foods I might be able to consider eating besides maybe some protein chips. I'm a vegetarian, so not adding any meats-- and I guess I can look at recipes here to come up with fresh ideas. But everything I can think of right now is either "soft" (eggs, yogurt, veggies, beans) or off-limits (high carb). Am I missing something? I'd love to hear from others who have done this whether they found new/exciting additions at this particular stage.

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

I was a vegetarian for 3 years before I deployed and couldn't maintain that diet without eating garbage as a replacement. I used to LOVE these Gardein Chicken stuffed with spinach things. I have looked high and low for them and they're not made anymore but man were they good. They came in like single serving packages with one loaf of chicken per package.
  10. So I am almost at the end of my 4th month and it seems I am getting full lot faster than before 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like the amount, I was able to eat, now I can't as much. Before I was okay eating around 0.75 cup (half of it is usually yogurt) but now I feel stuffed with the same level, so I have reduced the portion size a little to may be 0.5 to 0.6 cup or incorporate less solid and more semi solid like yogurt (which I usually have with every meal for my protein as a vegetarian eater). I don't know if anyone has experienced similar trajectory. Not sure if I should be concerned? Because I am studying, I am not as active. I do make sure to walk about 45 mins to an hour a day but that's mostly my activity other than some chores here and there. So I can't eat more than 3 to 4 meals a day and calories have kinda reduced too (between 600 to 800). I don't know, guess I am rambling but I am unable to eat as much to increase my calories. My dietician said usually patients on our program are around 1000 calories around 6 months mark, so I think I am alright but if I feel stuffed, I can't manage to eat much.

Anxiety about calories in pureed food

Thanks! I didn't realize how easy I have it with pureed foods. You really don't feel it (at least I dont)don't. I've since moved to soft foods. I eat about 700-800 cals a day right now and in between 70-80 grams of protein. I'm getting ready to go back to all foods (except raw vegetables, refined sugar and bread products) starting March 28th. Very excited! But tbh I feel pretty much like I'm eating normal food on soft foods with eggs, cooked vegetables, tofu, vegetarian Meatballs, marinara sauce, cheese and yogurts. So far so good. Here's another vegetarian post op meal: 1.5 oz of cauliflower mac n cheese, 1.5 oz of beyond beef, 1 teaspoon sugar free ketchup and chipotle hot sauce on the Mac n cheese (I like spicy food). Total 3 oz of food about, 150 calories and 12 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of carbs. I know it looks super ugly lol but it tastes great! I actually had the burger patty leftover from a restaurant. I had to go to a work dinner and I didn't want to deal with telling people why I wasn't eating so I ordered a beyond burger and ate a quarter of it (just the patty) and told everyone I was Low carb LOL anyway, the patty lasted me 3 days worth of meals so I stretched my dollar far too! Post op food- Low carb wraps

Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear! I'm going to wait until June to try any Low carb tortillas or bread. I hear chicken can give people problems too. I'm a vegetarian so I haven't found my protein sources to cause any issues. I eat tofu, eggs, cheese, plant based burger meat, chickpea pasta and I'm 34 days post op about. I got really sick eating zuchinnni because they weren't cooked enough and I didn't chew the skins properly. I get being annoyed by the pain. I'm so scared of dumping. Will keep you posted. Vegetarian meat substitutes

I get enough protein without meat I love No cow protein bars. If you need protein shake supplement Vega yea one I found I like. I am not vegan. I always ate a mix of vegetarian foods and meat but health reasons I slowly stopped eating meat. I did have eggs with a veggie burger (the actual vegetable style burger a way of getting veggies made in a way my gut could handle) Dr. Praeger's Cauliflower Burger and California Burgers have been my go to. I used to put egg on a small veggie burger. They have "Just egg" that is a vegetarian egg substitute that you can make your own scramble or omelette. There are many options not just beans. You can take plant based omegas, Bragg Nutritional yeast, Vitamin K to name three I can think of as top supplements. Protein intake is based on body weight and activity base protein is 0.36 grams Protein per 1lb of body weight. and more based on type of diet and activity level. too much protein actually converts to sugar. I am now working through some issues not related to my surgery. but have reached goal and maintained since my surgery 2019.

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

Moderation is healthy and I dont eat meat for personal reasons. I usually eat 2oz of refried black beans for lunch. Great option! Here's my vegetarian soft food stage dinner from the other night. 1.65 oz of impossible meat balls, .85 oz of protein Chickpea pasta, a sprinkle of parmesean and about a tablespoon of suace. Went down like a charm. Total protein: 13 grams. I think it's good for such a small amount of food and doesn't upset my stomach at all. Don't mind the kids plate LOL Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Definitely! We're here. There are some other great vegetarian and plant based threads on these forums. I also know some people go dairy free post op because they can't do lactose anymore. I haven't found that to be an issue yet but it happens. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank you so much. From what I’ve been reading, vegetarians and vegans are not common in the gastric surgery family. I’m glad I’ve found at least one.

    Vegetarian meat substitutes

I dont think it'll be hard at all. I'm tolerating pea and soy protein well. Here's how I'm getting over 80 grams of protein a day in soft foods: Breakfast: Siggis simple ingredients protein yogurt (15 grams) Lunch: yellow squash and 3.5 oz of impossible meat made into a meatball (16 grams) Dinner: 2 oz of refried beans, 1 tbspn of sour cream (4 grams) Snacks: thin slice of Provolone cheese (3 grams) and the big Kahuna, a protein shake made with 2 scoops of isopure and almond milk (use soy for extra protein). (50 grams) ...total for the day= 88 grams of plant based proteins! You can switch this up too. Do an omelet, scrambled eggs, tofu scramble, stir fry tofu and other low carb vegetarian meat subs. I was scared at first to try vegetarian meat substitutes but as long as theyre not super breaded and you chew them really well, they seem to be working. My dietician approved of them too! Everyone tolerates food differently after surgery but so far so good. Best of luck. I did my gastric bypass a month ago and I still will not go back to eating meat ever again. I’m glad I found this thread. I’ve been a mostly vegetarian eater for the past few years too and all the articles I’ve read online say it’s very difficult to get the necessary protein without eating meat, which I find hard to believe. Have you had any assistance of a nutritionist with your bariatric program or have you been figuring it out yourself? I have my appointment for my sleeve in May so I’m trying to get prepared.

    Dumping or something else?

Ugh that sounds terrible everyone I'm sorry that happened to you all. I guess it's bound to happen one of these days being so new. The weird part is I had no carbohydrates. There mightve been a little sugar in the sauce the veggies came with but no clue why besides that I got such bad nausea and rapid heartbeat. I had one vegetarian meatball today and a protein yogurt. So far so good but now I'm terrified to drink my protein shake because that's where it seemed to go downhill yesterday. Ughhh when will this fear go away? 22. Hey! I'm gearing up for my soft food stage next week and thinking about protein sources. I get most of my protein through shakes right now in pureed stage but I also eat eggs and beans. I've been a vegetarian for 7 years now and don't plan on eating meat again. Has anyone tried these foods on soft? -Steamed tofu (not crispy or hard) -vegetarian deli meat slices -vegetarian ground beef, finely chopped up And can you think of anything else that might be okay on soft food? 23. Some of my soft-food favorites have been: deviled eggs vegetarian cupcake-tray lasagna Trader Joe's boxed creamy tomato soup (also my favorite of the puree stage) carrot lentil soup with extra protein added 10-minute steamed eggs (for easy shell removal and a little bit of translucence at the center)-- for breakfast with just a bit of sugar-free syrup (+Boca morning sausage), or for lunch/dinner broken up into soup

  25. NJ, I'm in an earlier stage but I know I'll be where you are now down the line because I always read that plateaus (and slowed weight loss) are an inevitable, normal, and healthy part of the process. Wow, you've lost 93 pounds and are feeling great!? That's AWESOME!!!!! Maybe take some time to care for yourself, focus on and enjoy what you've accomplished. I'm taking an online workshop called "The Hunger Within" that focuses on the psychological aspects of eating and food choices. Maybe you would benefit from that course or something similar; I can't package it into a quick takeaway but it helped me notice that I often take either a strict or rebellious route with life's chicken vs. chocolate decisions, and that it would help me to develop and listen to a kinder and more rational voice that says something like "chicken and sometimes the little piece of chocolate." (I'm a vegetarian, so it's not chicken for me, but you get the idea...😊) If you are able to check in with your nutritionist, they'd probably have advice and be able to reassure you that you are on track! You are totally in control and you've got this!
