When could you eat a standard portion?
FifiLux replied to LoveLearning's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Not that familiar with the switch surgery but I presume it would be the same for all surgeries in that after the surgery there is a new "standard" to meal sizes. If you went back to eating what would be a normal size meal pre-op you would probably make yourself ill and uncomfortable as you can't fit the food in. I am almost a year and a half out (sleeve) and if I had to have a sandwich I would have half per meal but I am trying to stay away from bread/pasta/rice as much as possible as they take up space in my smaller stomach that should have proteins as the priority. I was in the US recently and was happy to see that Pret did half portions so I just got their one half chicken and avocado to have when on the go. For me I still find that for breakfast a yogurt, for lunch and dinner 150ml/3oz of food with a small snack a while later is sufficient for me main meal wise. I think have protein drink or bar as snacks if needed. When eating out I usually just have a starter and would not always finish. If ordering a main course I usually manage 1/3, or 1/2 if it is a small one, and bring the rest home. -

Okay so maybe it was because I got to see it as diced eggs in the food processor before I puréed it but the purée egg salad isn’t bad. I cut the fat by using half low fat Mayo, half Greek yogurt like the recipe suggested and then cut it even further by using three eggs instead of two but cut out two of the egg yolks. This made around 1/2 cup. I didn’t put any onion in because I’m a little afraid this early out if missing a chunk but I used onion powder and it’s not bad at all. -
I don't know about brownies specifically, but unsweetened cocoa powder is fine. It's really low in calories. I often mix it into vanilla yogurt and throw some berries on top for a treat.

Oh, I was feeling the same way with how we’re gonna go from liquid to purée. So I spoke to my nutritionist today and she said to start with egg whites, cottage cheese, cause it’s similar to yogurt and on the lighter side of things and then if I handle that well within 72 hours to progress to fish but steamed fish and tuna in a can with mayo. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am for just some fish. lol 😂. This liquid diet just I’m so over it. keep us posted on how it’s going for you.! -

Great ideas above but if that doesn’t work for you or for others reading this later, What if you were to just divide your alloyed macros or calories into meals/snacks. Like if you were allowed 1200 a day you do meals around 300 calories and 3 100 calorie snacks. For macros just don’t routinely eat any food over X grams of fat or added sugar. You can break it up differently. I did a protein shake for breakfast so I could have what felt like a little more substantial lunch and dinner. It should’ve be as hard forever. Once you figure out a handful meals that are within this plan you most likely will just sorta remember what meals work. I know I did and I live my life by alarms and reminders. Sometimes I joke that if my alarm didn’t tell me to wake up one day I just may not…ever. That’s how reliant I am on them. Anyways, I have a handful of my common meals that I know will work if I don’t have time to think about things. And if I’m having a less ideal lunch then I already know it’s chicken breast of fish for dinner with a veggie. Every meal for me has protein unless it’s a real odd day out and then I do my best to make up for it with a Greek yogurt or shake for snack. Another option would be to do the guess work the night before and pre plan what you eat the next day. You can play around with options and log it all into Baritastic or another calorie tracker app and know if it fits you plan and then just eat what’s on your list the next day. That may actually take a little stress out of it as well just having the decisions already made the day before. The meal prep mentioned before seems like a great way to achieve this as well. I know that I have single serve meals like that in the freezer. My regular and chicken chili are really great because they can even be defrosted in the microwave so they are good for days with zero planning or time. -

I hope so! I feel like a zombie over the most menial tasks. I feel like I’m barely doing anything, and not tired in the moment, but my tank is completely wiped. I have been making sure to have my protein drink, plus 2 oz of yogurt for breakfast, but I’m not noticing any increase in energy. -

Have a great time if you’re vacation!! I’ll be heading into “regular “ foods but I still will stay on the softer side just in case. Thank you for the tip for the restaurant!!. I think being foward is best. My doctors office gave me a medical card as well that says I can order kids meal (later on of course) so I plan on using that but for now sharing meals. I LOVED cottage cheese. It’s an acquired taste but two days ago I could not stand the smell so my husband ate the cup. I say #1 is eat what you like. If you don’t like it don’t eat it. Maybe yogurt is our thing or protein shakes, find what works for you. -
I am really interested in chia seeds, after reading about them. However I've only seen people use them in shakes (I don't do) or in yogurt ( not too fond of crunchy yogurt). Does anyone have different uses, recipes, etc for consuming chia seeds?

I definitely recommend to take it easy and absolutely listen to your body! a little bit at a time I started with trying yogurt and protein and then all of a sudden my body didn’t tolerate it and I had to go back to clear liquids. Definitely continue with the medication. Those have been a blessing to me. I am going to stay on Nexium for the next two months per my doctor. Do not do the vitamins. I would definitely recommend wait on vitamins until your purée stage if you have a delicate stomach. Vitamin and vitamins and I think that’s what really affected my stomach and why I had to river back to liquids. Congratulations on your surgery.!! -

I had all those emotions too for my RYGB. Now we are into the post-op stage of me practically going overboard to make sure I follow the diet exactly and remembering to take all my meds. It did not help that I had a major change in medicines and had just picked up several bottles of things that were just discontinued. (My brain: Look at all that wasted money...) But we got this and it will all be worth it! For everyone on stage 2 of the liquid diet (what my doc calls stage 2, essentially the non-clear liquids and such being added back in), all my instructions say about yogurt is that it has to be thinned. How much water are you all adding to 'thin' it? -

Made the fam Çilbir which is a turkish egg dish with a tangy and garlicky greek yogurt base, topped with poached eggs and drizzled with a hot spicy olive oil and butter mix. I love this dish but didn’t have any. I might have some for dinner. With a side of toasted sourdough. -

Did you tell your team about the changes in your stool. It sounds like they are trying to help with the nausea and the constipation but that sounds like something they should be aware of. Especially if it’s more than once. It could be something simple like one of the meds you are taking causing it but the doctor will know. If you are able to eat some foods, what about high protein yogurts or unflavored protein powder added to things? Also, if you are not getting enough fluids it could actually be causing your nausea. It’s sort of a catch 22. The more nausea you feel the less you drink but the more dehydrated you get the more nauseous. Do you have other signs of dehydration like darker urine? And have to talked to the Doctor or NP or just the front desk. Maybe schedule an appointment if not and just be sure that the medical team is getting all of the details because sometimes when trying to type it out in an email or whatever things get left out. It’s okay to be the squeaky wheel right now, you are struggling. Their job is not just to chop you up and put your back together. It’s to get you through the healing process too. That includes getting you back to being able to eat and function normally. You will get there. ❤️ -

White fish Ceviche and Mexican street corn salad (made with a greek yogurt dressing). Below is what I plated for myself but decided to go for seconds for the ceviche and only had one bite of the corn salad (which was really good). -

Egg White Protein Powder
JennyBeez replied to JennyBeez's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
The few I like / can handle are all milk-protein or whey protein, lol. It's this ridiculous little circle of "Ooh, this one isn't dairy/whey! But wait, look, stevia which always tries to murder me. Okay, this other one has sucralose and I'm okay with that -- but it's milk-protein so fml." I do have one shake or (decaf) profee a day, but usually either split in two as a snack or to replace my lunch (cause lately lunch doesn't want to sit right 80% of the time, unless it's yogurt or shake). Either way, it usually doesn't happen until after 10am because again, dairy/milk and my meds absorbtion issues. I was really frustrated for a while when I first was having meds / supplement absorbtion issues due to how ridiculously I had to time everything. I've ironed (hehe) out most of the drag so it's easier to handle, but it's still frustrating when I seriously just want my cup of comfort coffee earlier, or am really feeling yogurt for brekkie. My care team says it might be something I have to do for the rest of my life, but my PCP and endocrinologist both say that when my labs come back improved enough that I can cut out out more meds / supplements, I should be able to have a less annoying schedule. We'll see. -
Just put a few teaspoons of milk powder in your cup of skimmed milk and add your nut butter and blitz. Half a banana gives fibre. Add some Greek yogurt or protein yogurt when you are eating more. Just do it to taste.

I know it is hard but try not to let her (and anyone else with a negative attitude) get to you. You have taken a big step and congratulations on starting the journey to a new you. Did the medical team say they wouldn't operate if you didn't reach the 34lb loss? I am sure they don't stop everything if you are just a few pounds short so don't stress if you can help it. You say it is a supervised plan so I presume they are used to helping patients follow it and adapt it to an individuals needs so that should be a help for you. You are so motivated (studying, saving etc) that you will do your best and any loss pre-surgery is a win. I had sleeve surgery and in the months before I tried my best to eat smaller portions so I switched to an appetiser sized bowl and plate for most of my meals. I knew I would be using them after the surgery so figured may as well ease myself into it. I also tried to start eating slower - I am still not great at that but better than before. Food wise don't go so extreme that you then self sabotage at some point out of desperation for a food you love. We all have different reasons for getting to the size we do that needs surgical intervention, for me it was partly not knowing when to stop eating, too much carbs and alcohol and not exercising at all. I didn't have to go on a diet pre-op or do the liver reduction thing a lot of patients have to do but in the weeks before my surgery I went on holiday and ate everything I wanted so actually went up in weight so then when I returned I just cut down on things but still allowed myself an occasional treat, so instead of pastries for breakfast I had Greek or skyr yogurts, shop bought sandwiches etc for lunch were swapped for homemade veg soup, for dinners instead of pizza's, burgers and pasta dishes I tried to have more chicken & veg based meals, cutting back on a lot of carbs. I swapped out rice and pasta for cauliflower rice or lentil pasta. These small changes helped me get back on track before my surgery but as I didn't have to follow a pre-surgery diet plan it was more for me, so as to get into good habits. I am sure there will be plenty of advice and support here for you 💪

this is very true! if you have a grill, slicing a peach in half put it in the microwave for just a touch to soften it then grill it open face down then add a dollop of Greek yogurt add a little cinnamon. DELCIOUS!! I tend to eat more whole foods but I have been getting a super hankering for candy, I think its almost that time of the month. The sugar free candy isnt worth my calories. so I am trying to find "desserts" that tickle my fancy.

Qtys are like cup wise but no mention of calories anywhere. I am currently on full liquids so I'd have a protien shake premade or powder using almond milk or normal milk + frozen Berries Greek yogurt low fat non flavored And I made a oat and chicken chicken soup which I blended and I have q cup of it a day. I did call the dietitian today and she said just eat healthy and I am eating right No mention of calories 😭😭😭 I am literally fetching info on this website or tiktok and just going eith it with the knowledge I got. -

If anyone likes Waldorf Salad, this was a good one. I made half the recipe but added one Skinless chicken breast (pretty big, 6.9oz after it was cooked) so I used the correct amount of yogurt. Low calorie, high protein relatively tasty dinner is marinating in the fridge ✔️ Some of you may want to peel the apple and leave out the walnuts of course, maybe even omit the celery (I just chopped it really small) and I know most of you guys can’t eat quite as much as me volume wise but for the halved recipe with the added chicken it makes two 1.5 cup servings and that’s 207 calories, 25g protein, 17g carbs. I will probably end up having half for dinner and the other half later for a snack. I figured if I find something I like maybe someone else will enjoy it too. Here’s the link. https://skinnyfitalicious.com/healthy-waldorf-salad/ If anyone else comes across healthy recipes that aren’t bad. Please share. I am really trying to commit to this. I didn’t try this hard with that sleeve and I’m hoping by finding a variety of healthy stuff I like that this time will be different for me. It certainly feels different so 🤞 -
Relieved to hear that. Any tips for meeting nutritional guidelines - I am not very good at cooking. So my post op soft food day looks like protein water chicken mince (2-3oz) hummus or some Greek yogurt and a bite or canned peach so far

What does a typical day of eating and acitivity look like to you?
SpartanMaker replied to AmberFL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Interesting question! I don't have a ton of routine when it comes to meals, with the possible exception of breakfast. Most days I eat a yogurt parfait with Greek yogurt, fresh berries & protein boosted Kind brand granola. That said, I'm not opposed to other things like banana nut pancakes (a favorite), or even cold pizza on occasion! Lunch is most often leftovers from dinner since we still haven't figured out how to cook 1.5 meals (half for me, whole for my wife). Dinner is super varied. We both like to cook and like good food, so it might be just about anything. That said, I have found that I just don't enjoy big slabs of meat anymore. We do occasionally have red meat, but it's probably once a week or less. I'd say we have seafood based dinners 3-4 times a week and 1-2 vegetarian meals per week. I also eat a lot more beans than I used to. Overall, I don't focus much on macros. It's more about eating a variety of healthy foods and enjoying what little I can eat. As far as activity, there is no typical day. It can vary from nothing at all (I do one dedicated rest day a week), to running 12-14 miles or more on my long run day. In a typical week, I run 30-40 miles (my main sport), but I also do strength training a couple days a week and do a little bit of cross training either on the bike or on a stationary rower. Later in the year I'm thinking of starting a marathon training block. If so, I'll be increasing my mileage up into the 50-60 MPW range. I think one of the main reasons my diet may differ from the "typical" post WLS diet is because of the high activity level I have. I just wouldn't be physically able to do that volume of running without eating a lot more carbs to fuel my runs. In fact, getting enough calories is my current challenge, not getting too many. That's another topic for another day however! -
I can eat all fruits but still struggle with skins. Grape skins especially give me the foamies. I also peel apples, tomatoes and peaches/nectarines. TBH skin really scares me, I have had so many vomiting episodes. The first fruits I tried were raspberries and watermelon and are still my most favourites. I eat fruit with my yogurt in a morning and as an afternoon snack, watermelon or a low cal berry. Some evenings I have a peeled and cored apple with cheese.

Amp protein in SF pudding
JennyBeez replied to Fars's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Bone broth powder into any broth / soup is a big help. Unsweetened peanut butter powder into fat free plain greek yogurt or pudding can give you an extra boost -- or like @FifiLux suggests, make your own pudding-style treat with jello flavouring and a yogurt base. The sour / tangy taste of plain yogurt can make sweetened powders more palatable, and you can use less than required since you don't really need it for thickening (especially if you start with a greek yogurt base -- very thick already). Depending on your program, you might be able to have cottage cheese on liquid diet? Mine did, and it was already a great dose of protein but added a scoop of unflavoured whey and some savory spices was a nice change from faux sweetness. If you find a clear / water soluble protein powder, you can drink it diluted so it's not as strong and throw in a little squeeze of lemon or lime juice. V8 / tomato juice is another good option. I had a rough time mixing unflavoured protein powder into it without clumping, but chicken bone broth powder mixed with a little hot water before adding it to the tomato juice worked well for me.
