Trapped wind 3 weeks after surgery
summerseeker replied to Former heavyweight's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As you are early out contact a doctor at your surgery, go to the A&E or ring 111. You need to know what is going on. Its tough when you are having surgery in a different country as you are not able to get their direct input . Unfortunately they are not bariatric surgeons but they will check for symptoms It could be as simple as the Covid or a reaction to the sugars in the shakes. Also tomato soup is very acidic and could hurt your new tummy, try strained chicken soup or diluted bovril stock cubes. My Uk surgeon believes in plain skimmed milk not shakes. Its cheaper too. Just a thought ... How are your bowel movements ? Sorry TMI, I know but we speak freely on here as we have all been there done that Please feel free to ask me anything -
Constipation
summerseeker replied to Watchjulshrink's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can honestly say this is the one of the worst things I went through in the first 6 weeks. I tried everything and 14 days later still nothing. TMI alert - I put on a rubber glove and went in. The relief was wonderful. It happened once more then I have been ok ever since. -
WHAT is this???
Dogmom68 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I tried to edit my post but it wouldn’t let me….. anyway, I also wanted to add that you should tell your surgeon you think you may have an ulcer that could possibly be bleeding. I think that would account for the very dark stool. (I know, TMI but, hey, we’re all friends here.) -
Is this GERD???
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know I was really thinking what I have is GERD, but now I'm not sure what is going on. So here's what I'm dealing with: 1) burning in my throat and occasionally my chest and stomach 2) nausea when eating anything at all, no matter what it is or how much or little of it I try to eat 3) can't tolerate anything but liquids now 4) if I try to eat, it literally won't go down. It sits at the bottom of my throat and doesn't move for AGES. Drinking liquid doesn't help. It just gets stuck there, too. 5) lots of burping and hiccups 6) dark, sticky kinda poo (sorry, tmi) 7) heaviness and pain in my upper stomach/abdominal area 8 ) occasional shortness of breath 9) feeling full after literally 2 or 3 bites of something (small bites, and before stuff wouldn't go down, I was trying to eat and I would be PAINFULLY full after 2 or 3 bites) 10) literally woke up with what felt like acid in my throat this morning (now my throat feels raw and hurts) Some of this sounds like GERD, but some of it doesn't. My husband looked it up and said it sounds like a hiatal hernia, but I don't know. Anyone have experience with that? I'm up late because I'm in so much pain and I can't sleep. Definitely looking forward to calling my surgeon's office. But still, anyone on here have any clue at all what this might be?? -

Sorry is this is TMI, but yes, I had diarrhea starting post op day 3 until post op day 7. I added some benefiber in my shakes and it went away. I was expecting the opposite problem.

I'm having real problems with nausea today. I can't stomach another protein pudding or shake. Last night I tried some clear soup and it went down fine. I've been using myfitnesspal to keep track of my water and protein. I've only been able to get 8-25 grams of protein per day, and around 1 liter maybe of water and drink (33 o). I'm supposed to aim for 1.5 l of water (50 oz). I can tell by the color of my urine (hope that's not TMI) that I'm dehydrated, as it's more orange than yellow. It's just so hard to get more down with constant nausea. Do you have any tips or tricks for getting more fluids and protein?
-
TMI, maybe, but Is anyone having any trouble with diarrhea? I took miralax on day 3 and I went to the bathroom probably 5 or 6 times yesterday (day 4) and at day 5 I’ve already went several times. Definitely feeling a bit light headed as I met my protein goal yesterday but only 40 ounces of water…
-
It’s been 14 days. No issues getting water or protein. I’m actually not as hungry as the first few days but when I smell food I was certainly like a bite Only 1 issue with nausea. I had some green tea with no sugar from Starbucks. I drank about half, and that came up. TMI Weight loss has been great but I’m sure still primarily water but still 18 lbs I have started heavy weights and that went well but tired quick. I’ll stick with one muscle group per day. Good luck everyone.

Hey guys Maybe TMI but yesterday I had the most awful, two hour long session trying to have a BM. Soooo constipated. My hubby was ready to call an ambulance it was that bad, sweating and shaking and finally when I had managed to go enough to make a difference, I was so exhausted I just slept and slept. In the night I woke with pains in my stomach under the wound sites and a pain in my left shoulder. It is a bit better now so I’m not rushing to A&E or anything but I wonder if straining the wound site causes referred pain in the shoulder? I’d imagine if I had burst stitches I’d be in agony and my stomach would be hard so I’m not too worried / but just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? Xxxxx

Why why why did I do this? Slow suicide.

Thank you for answering me, friends. I have calmed down a bit, mainly thanks to the idea of bone broths. Yes! I can make bone broths and I can stomach that - and it’s fluid. So that’s my plan. I am so so grateful to you. Yes also to yoghurts and I’m 3 weeks in so broth and yoghurt. Last night I took a bit of the outside of my husband’s pizza and chewed it and chewed it and then just spat it out. (Sorry for TMI). I felt a bit better as well.. maybe just the comforting taste after nothing but water and bile for two weeks. So now I’m feeling a bit better. I have a review with the surgeon in a few weeks and I’m going to have a few things to say. Firstly, that it’s not good enough after paying thousands for aftercare that I can’t even get a phone call when I need one. And two, it’s not good enough for me to have been taken off the antidepressants without consultation or help. Thank you for giving me the support. I am so grateful. -
I'm not on clears beforehand, so that has to stink. How long after do you need to be on clear? I have the opposite problem of your TMI issue. I finally broke down and took some of my post-op stool softners because I hadn't gone in a week.

Hi everyone, my date is 6/23. I’m day 4 of clear liquids. I’m surviving but definitely not thriving. I’m basically existing on broth, Gatorade 0, and strained canned soup because jello makes me gag. Also, (and I know it’s TMI but I want to share my real experience) this pre-op diet diarrhea is no joke! But, I’m optimistic better things are ahead!

Hi all! I just hit my one year post-op at the end of May. I’ve made it to my goal weight and then some which feels great. However, over the past few weeks I have begun feeling extremely bloated in the afternoons and evenings. The bloating is causing some pain above my belly button and gas (sorry tmi). Has anyone else experienced this? I have a meeting with my dietitian tomorrow and am planning on asking about it too. I haven’t changed my diet in any way for several months now and am feeling full/satisfied after eating so I know it’s not hunger pangs. Thoughts? Thanks everyone and keep up the amazing work!

Exercise after revision
Tomo replied to follmerpa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision from vsg to rny last august for gerd. It didn't take long to lose a lot of weight and hit and pass goal. I actually lost faster on the revision than the with the sleeve. My workout is less than when I had the sleeve due to much lower calorie intake after the revision. I had quite a bit of side effects with the sleeve (gerd, TMI stuff... Etc.) but none so far with the rny. Everything was resolved. I'm at the 10th month mark. Like you, I was concerned about whether I could lose more weight and the surgeon remarked "Oh, you WILL lose weight. Your pouch will be the size of an egg." He was correct. You'll definitely lose weight after the revision. -

Awww, thats sweet. Actually i tied my own record of 13 days i set back in 2019 after i had plastics. Constipation has been a pretty regular issue for me since getting WLS (prior to that i used to go 2-3 times a DAY…yes, i know TMI lol). Couple that with my historical issue of not being able to go Number 2 anywhere but my own toilet at home, it was kinda expected. 🙄 In any case, my colon is clear again, thanks to 2 rounds of suppositories, and implementing the trusty pregnancy/labour breathing techniques during the deed!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 -

***TMI warning *** That was so smart!!! I had my VSG on 5/10 and haven't pooped since probably 5/8 and today is 5/14... Im starting to wonder how much of my post surgery bloat is from that! -

The problem i have with food is i know when i am full but i go back for more for instance dinner i eat until i am full but i make the excuse that i want more i don't know how to explain it and i drink a lot of fluids and then i feel bloat and i hate the feeling it gives me i lose my breath and the only way for me to feel better and to catch my breath is to lay on my back in bed and then i let out this burp ( sorry TMI i know) then i get up and feel a little better anyway what causes the bloat ? Rich I forgot to mention when it gets close to dinner time my wife or i will say to the other "what do you want for dinner " i hate thinking about food or my wife or i will say while we are eating dinner what do you want for dinner tomorrow night we are not even finished with the meal in front of us and Shes asking about the next nights menu if you will....By the way my wife had gastric bypass surgery years ago and has stayed under 200 ( this is NOT her goal weight ) for years i think it's been like 17 years and she's a chef and has bachelors degree, I think in culinary arts i will talk with you soon. -
Do you ever "forget" you had surgery?
Kia kaha replied to lizonaplane's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m only one month post surgery, and I thought I was ‘doing well’ then eat too much 2 days ago and had what must have been dumping, such awful cramps etc (I won’t give you tmi but you can guess). So I have gone back to tiny amounts of purees again because my gut just feels sore and upset. So I guess that my ‘forgetting’ I have had the surgery has had horrible consequences. Re. the getting hungry…I have that as well, but so much of it is ‘head hunger’, I want something sweet after dinner, that’s a habit, and ‘mouth hunger’ I crave crunchy, salty food. It’s not real hunger. My brain is saying ‘but you are eating so little, how can you possibly not be starving hungry’ but if I ignore those messages the ‘hunger’ passes (specially if I drink some liquid. A cup of tea, or a Miso soup help my 4pm crash. Really, really listening to your body, stopping before you are full is the way to go. I haven’t really been doing that, and the consequences were grim! Anyway hope that helps….I’ve got to deal with this myself, so any ‘advice’ is just my thoughts…I’m not sure there is a magic answer! -
How long did it take you to have a bowel movement after your RNY? I hear it can take up to 7 days to have one…not liking that idea so I’ve been taking miralax daily so far. How long for you? Did you need something to help get it going? 😜

keep postponing to start my preop liquid diet.
Possum220 replied to Walktoseetheroad's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Certainly leave it no longer. You can do it. I am day 13 of a 14 day diet of Optifast plan. Before I started it i was scared that I just wouldnt be able to do it. I also knew that If I cant do this now then I would never manage after having my Op. Yes, I did have a couple of headaches and bouts of nausea for the first five days but after that it got easier. Keeping busy is also good. I have done heaps of cleaning. Where I live must be in shock. This might be TMI but i feel a change in the shape of my body. Maybe that is the my shrunken liver talking. Stop thinking. Thousand of people have done this before. You can too. -
Wow - thank you so much for replying to my post! I had the Scopanaro BPD surgery at Goleta Valley Hospital in CALIF - done by Dr Holian, and was actually #86 to have that surgery! Dr Holian and his nurse, Trish, were life savers in those early days as it was a guessing game on much of what we were supposed to do post surgery. Much of what is done today was gleaned from those days of hit and miss post op care. I even was the 2nd (or 3rd?) person to get pregnant have give birth after having BPD surgery. After both Dr. Holian & Trish passed away I lost the much needed support and tried time and time again to find medical, or naturopathic doctors that could help me. I did see Dr. Ara Keshishian and ironically just reached out via email again to him today (we no longer live in CA). He no longer takes insurance, so I may try some of your other great suggestions. It would be so awesome to have a support group to toss ideas around. I don't have to have someone that lives in CO -- but that would be an extra perk! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my post. Right now I have an immediate need to find someone to address my painful issues - so will reach out to those you have suggested and always have Dr. K to fall back on if no one else can take me or takes my insurance. Hope this wasn't too much TMI. thanks again.....

Good Morning -I have been reading all of the questions and answers and a lot of them helped, first time posting cause I need some help. Four weeks post-op, down 39 lbs. The constipation hit me. About 8 hours running back and forth one night, finally passed at 1:15 in morning. Now in lots of pain. Phoned my doctor, they have me on 2 pills twice a day, stool softener, 1 dose Miralax and one dose Milk of Magnesia. Now I can't stay out of bathroom. I think this is too much laxatives. What is everyone on daily that helps stay regular. Sorry for the TMI.

Hey everyone, Hope you're all doing well! So, I kind of just need to vent for a bit. I know everyone's experience is different and only my Doctor and Surgeon can give medical insight, but I'm hoping someone may have been in a similar situation as I am. So, before I could schedule a surgery date I had to do all the tests. The last step (which I now wish was the first step), was my blood panel. All results came back good, except the blood panel. The results returned showing that my Vitamin D, B12 and folic acid are all low. Easy enough to fix with a supplement. It also showed the my cholesterol was low, so my Doctor said to make sure I am eating healthy fats (avocados, nuts, fish, etc). *Possible TMI --> She also wants me to get an intravaginal ultrasound as she found heightened testosterone levels and yeast in my urine. Ultimately, she wants to rule out PCOS (which was ruled out in my teens, but that was roughly 20 years ago) But then she went on to explain that my A1C test (blood sugar test that shows my average over 3 months) was at a 10, while normal is 5.6 or less. With this number, it constitutes as Type 2 Diabetes. Because I have never had issues with this before, she is requesting that I wear a glucose monitoring device (in arm) for 2 weeks and begin a weekly injection called Trulicity. Apparently Trulicity will help lower my blood sugar levels, but also could bring on weight loss as it decreases overall appetite. She is hoping to see improvements in the next 3 months, but until then will not issue the clearance. I understand it is important for me to be healthy as my body will need all it can to heal post-surgery, but I am truly discouraged. 1. I'm angry at myself that I let things get this bad. 2. I'm worried that all my other tests will become null and void, since I'm fairly certain they are only valid for 6 months. Most were done in March and with having to wait at least 3 months - it's really cutting it close. 3. Has anyone been in a similar situation? If my numbers don't come down, does that mean surgery is out of the question? I appreciate the listening ears and any input or advice! Thank you and hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend.
