Trying to eat more veggies- 3 months post op

I am about 8 weeks out and have been eating salads (chopped small) for a couple weeks now. I have only had one incident where I threw up after eating salad (and that was gross) but otherwise no issues. It's really the only food I am eating as I'm still taking in protein via drinks. Salads (lettuce, onion, cucumber, bell pepper, chickpeas, bulgur wheat, tomato, etc.), quest chips, jello cups, and protein drinks are that which sustain me as of late. Also worth noting: I buy the red or green head lettuce, it is softer than romaine or iceberg lettuce. Also, I dilute the sesame dressing with vinegar to make it stretch and reduce the calories.

    OMG the constipation is real

Hope everything worked out and you were able to get things “moving”. One thing that really helped me was my dietician suggested a toilet stool that props your feet up and puts your colon in the best position to “go”. She recommend trying a heavy stack of books to prop your feet up at first before spending the money on a stool. I have a three legged pet so I just used one of his steps and that worked perfectly.

    DAY 1 Pureed Stage

HOORAY for you! I had refried beans for dinner. I added 1/2 cup of Fairlife milk to the entire can of beans (heated). It wasn’t runny. Then I added a big pinch of cheese to my individual serving in the bowl. It was amazing! No stomach issues at all. I’ve been eating Campbells bean and bacon soup (blended) for the past two weeks, so my stomach is totally used to beans.

Calories per day - 2 months post op?

My team has us at 800-1000 a day from week 6 until maintenance. With that being said, I am into my 6th week and I can barely get 600 cals a day. I do hit my fluid and protein goals every day though.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Hi everyone! I'm a little late to the convo but am happy to meet some fellow June sleevers. My last pre-op appointment is June 6th, and my bariatric coordinator said the surgery would likely be 3-4 weeks after that (putting me at end end of June/first of July).
  6. Thank you 🙏 to everybody who responded to my questions these past couple of weeks. I just left the dr’s office and ended-up canceling my surgery set for tuesday. After reading a medical paper recently published about the correlation of wls and a decline in mental health, I’ve realized this route really isn’t worth the risk of the onset of acute anxiety and panic. Today I weighed in at 202. Would like to get to 138 (5’4”) and even though I’ve done it a million times-am going to give it another go the old fashioned way. I told my surgeon that I feel like I’m trading one health anxiety (pre-surgery—high bp) for another, (fear of bodily sensations as I heal and mental wellness). My doctor poo poo’d my concerns “we really don’t see a lot of that” and had no idea what I meant when I said I fear I’m going to panic at being trapped in my own body 😆 Good luck to all of us—this journey is not for the faint of heart ♥️ and though I’m feeling defeated at this moment I am also tremendously relieved that I’m doing what feels best for my brain 🙏🦋🦋🦋🦋

I am actually feeling great. I am actually going to start riding my bicycle hopefully in the next couple weeks. Just gotta get it tuned up. I stopped riding over a year ago due to the weight gain and i was beyond the capacity of the bicycle lol. Sucked too because that bicycle was expensive lol.

    So fed up

Stalls are super frustrating and depressing to be totally honest. I have seen more of them after I passed 6 months post op than I saw before that. My weight loss is down to around 2-3 pounds a month as I get closer to ideal weight. I do get frustrated but I know I have more to lose so I just stay the course and sure enough, it breaks and I get a couple more pounds before the next stall.

    So fed up

If it makes you feel any better, I am currently in a 4 week stall. I'm staying in the right calorie range (that has worked for me and my program espouses), am exercising, and basically doing everything right but I have been just hanging out in the same 2 lbs range the whole time, just shy of my 100 lb loss milestone. So. Frustrating. Just hang in there and keep doing what you know is right and has been successful. Maybe change something up to see if shocks your system a bit, but don't go overboard. This is all a complete head game. Your body will do what it wants... when it wants. I've found looking at other success measures (measurements, non-scale victories) can really help me get through these times. I feel your pain and totally empathize.

Hi. So first two weeks after surgery i was on a liquid only diet. (this varies greatly from surgeon to surgeon) Getting in the protein was easy. the fluids are difficult. I started eating solid food yesterday and so far no problems at all. I have had Eggs, Tuna, Salmon, chili, ect... no issues at all.. Now it does take me about 45 minutes to a hour to finish a small 4oz serving. only thing that sucks about that is food gets cold.

Stalls can last up to a month. The closer you are to a "normal" weight, the longer they last, but they can last a month or more even at the beginning. Some people have more stalls than normal. This is a true head game - it's very frustrating. Sometimes eating different foods for a few days, or drinking more or exercising more, can help break a stall, but sometimes.... you just have to be patient!

    So fed up

Oh my God I hope that’s not the case for me! 10 and a half grand I paid for this surgery, I’d be mortified if I found out my surgeon did my sleeve purposely large!! I think if I was seeing the scale move the calorie amount wouldn’t bother me, but because I’ve seen no movement in 2 weeks it’s getting me down but I’ll take ur word for it being normal and just keep plodding along, hopefully it’s a stall that will break soon! If not I will contact my practice

1200 calories is not a lot, but it depends on 1200 calories OF WHAT FOOD. Are you eating protein and veggies, or are you eating cakes, sweets, and chips? You will not feel restriction if you are eating sugary or salty snacks because they dissolve into nothing, but if you eat lean protein, you will likely feel restriction. For example, I went out to sushi last night, but didn't eat the rice, so I essentially just ate raw fish - pure protein. I was stuffed! But then after I got back to my hotel I found a rice krispy treat and was able to eat half of it with no issues... oh well. I also have been hungry since day one! I was put on metformin and topamax (topirimate) by my medical team, and it definitely helps the hunger. So does tea and coffee, and drinking enough in general. Also, two weeks of not losing weight is totally normal. As far as exercise... gentle walking likely won't make you hungry (except if you're "expecting" it to). It is good for your mood and while it is unlikely to help you lose weight (you can't out-exercise a bad diet!), it is excellent for health and it is good for keeping weight off long term. Good luck!
  14. I travel for work and was told not to fly for four weeks. I started flying (cross-country) on week five, with no issues. Get up to move around on the flight to prevent any chance of blood clots, but you should be fine (check with your surgery center of course - we're not doctors!). I didn't notice feeling any better, more energy, etc after surgery. I walk faster, but I still get tired feet if I stand on concrete all day, and I feel tired at the end of my day just as much as before surgery. I can walk more hours and I feel restless if I don't exercise.
  15. Well I think that the good news is that they should be doing labs every three months for the first couple months so even if you do get a little behind it shouldn’t be too far behind I wouldn’t think. But Splenda makes a good point that if it’s Related to an issue that may resolve with weight loss then it may be safer to just take them.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So far so good. 5 months post op and realized that I need to hit a minimum 1200-1400 calories a day to lose. Any less absolutely results in stalled weight. Down 125 lbs so far though!
  17. I am just under 3 weeks post op here in Florida and i feel fine. I wouldnt have any issues really sitting in a plane or going walking around and i spent a good portion of the day yesterday at my local marina outside without issue. Only thing is i just make sure i have a good water bottle with me to get in all my fluids
  18. Yes- at 6 weeks out I can already tell a difference! For example, my feet don't hurt nearly as much when I am up a long time. My knees don't make grinding sounds as bad if at all with my right knee.

    So fed up

I think I was at 1000-1200 calories at 3 months out and that was encouraged by my practice. My point is to say, if you are losing weight, it's not necessarily bad to be taking in 1200 calories. If you aren't losing weight, it could just be a stall - even at 1200 calories, you are probably in a calorie deficit unless you are really close to your goal weight, which is unlikely given you are only 3 months from surgery.

Any Tips to speed up fat loss?

I think at this point I started exercising more and it did the trick. When I go into a stall or slowdown I notice I still lost inches due to the exercise then I see step changes in weight loss.

    So fed up

I do not agree with this at all. Exercise to me is critical to getting the weight loss to continue. If I take a few days off I notice it slows down and I get into a stall. Not to mention, you have to exercise for health as well. Finally, by exercising, you are also trimming your body down and losing inches in the right places. I think you Doctor would agree with exercise and no Doctor would say not to exercise...atleast walking.

    So fed up

Exercise has very little to do with how much weight you lose, or how quickly. The only exercise I did for nearly a year was walking and my weight loss was very successful. Stalls at about the 12-week mark are very common, as you will see when you read the posts here. It's nothing to worry about. As long as you are sticking with the program recommended by your doctor and nutritionist, the weight loss will come. Just be patient. (Easier said than done, I know.)
  23. Absolutely you can do all these things. At 8 weeks post op, I flew to Mexico, went swimming, kayaking, bike riding and snorkeling. I think you can do a lot more than you think you can do at this stage. You are heavier starting out than I was, so you may have more limitations but flying and walking around are definitely doable.

Anyone not need iron after bypass?

I actually misunderstood my surgeon at my post op appointments. I bought iron but did not take it as I thought I was supposed to wait until my 3 month bloodwork to see if I needed iron. At week 6-7 I started to feel really tired so I reached out to my team to see if I should start taking iron. They told me I should have been taking it all along. My iron levels were slightly elevated prior to surgery.

How long are you missing work?

I took 2 weeks off, I would have been able to come back after 1 week.
