  1. My surgery date is 6/3/19. I am excited and a little concerned because I didn’t ask anyone to come help and my husband works 2nd shift. Am I making a mistake? Will I be able to get through the first few days home alone or do I need to get help?

    ❤ MAY 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Boy I’ve been having a rough time keeping up this month! 13) play with an animal. We have two dogs and watch my sons dog when they both have to work 12 hour shifts so got this one covered. 14) cook from scratch. Every day 😍 15) Read a book. I’m reading “never binge again” on kindle. It’s a free download. Warning though - he refers to his binge as “the pig”. It doesn’t offend me because he’s experienced it and he’s using his own experience. 16) Listen to a podcast . Done. I listened to James Miller Lifeology this morning. We’re halfway through the month and I’m down 6 lbs. My goal was 10 for the month so hoping🙏🏼
  3. I think I have Pcos, my doctors never tested me properly for it because I am obese. 🙄 I too had trouble losing weight pre surgery I remember being on the 2 week liver shrinking diet and I would lose a few pounds then out of now where gain it back and I didn’t change anything. Since surgery I have lost 35 pounds. I had surgery on March 29, 2019. I had the DS and I have lost like 50% of my hair. After my cousin’s wedding this weekend I am shaving it all off.
  4. Hi, I converted from lapband to bypass in one stage on Wednesday May 1. I spent 2 nights in hospital. I have a desk job and did some very light work from home the next Monday and Tuesday. I went back to the office Thursday for a half day (8 days later). But I was not very effective! In retrospect, I should have waited until the next Monday (12 days). It has now been 15 days and I don’t think I am quite 100%. I get tired quickly (maybe because the very low calories). But I have a flexible job and it’s ok that I didn’t come back 100%...if I don’t feel well I head home. So, if I didn’t have that luxury I would say I would have come back next Monday (19 days). Hope this helps. Stella
  5. That's the perfect description of it! I've been reading that it affects 10% of women so you'd think it would get more medical attention. How can doctors justify telling patients that the "treatment" for PCOS is losing weight when one of the major symptoms is an almost complete inability to lose weight? Anyway, I agree it would be great to keep this thread going to encourage each other.
  6. Around 10 years ago, I lost 150 pounds on my own. I was walking about the same as you are plus going to the gym. I lost about a pound a day doing that and eating protein bars. So, yeah, that amount of exercise can do it!
  7. Aw, many thanks! But I think an 8 day binge takes away all brownie points 😋 didnt make my 48 hours. Ate after 20 and turned it into an OMAD day (redundancies...). 23 hours in today. Hopefully I make it to 36. Being a bit smarter about my BP this time around and taking 50 calories of solid non carby food with my BP pills to avoid me having to quit because of spikes. That rules out autophagy but it’s better than not fasting. The resetters always seem so complicated!! I don’t know if I have the discipline and focus for it with my schedule. But I will take a look. Btw, don’t know if this is Keto/IF related but my period stopped. I am 37 so while possible, I doubt it’s menopause. I am sure to get an earful if I bring fasting up with the obgyn. And the damage done by an 8 day binge....10 pounds😖😖😖 my body sucks. Scientifically that means I consumed 35,000 calories in 8 days (which I didn’t even come close to). Ah, the wondrously broken biochemistry of the formally obese....
  8. Hall says his findings have implications for the diet wars — vegan versus low-carb or low-fat diets. "They all have something in common. ... Proponents of healthy versions of those diets suggest that people cut out ultra-processed foods." He says that this elimination might account for at least part of the success that people have on these diets. Popkin says the take-home message for consumers is, "We should try to eat as much real food as we can. That can be plant food. It can be animal food. It can be beef, pork, chicken, fish or vegetables and fruits. And one has to be very careful once one begins to go into other kinds of food." https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2019/05/16/723693839/its-not-just-salt-sugar-fat-study-finds-ultra-processed-foods-drive-weight-gain?utm_medium=RSS&utm_campaign=science Full study is linked in NPR article
  9. I’m looking forward to ( and already have done ) 1- wearing the clothing in my closet that I kept because I l promised myself I would fit in it again one day.. 2- getting off insulin ( use to take 80 units a day , I’m down to only 10) 3- running a 5k and then maybe even a longer distance 4- more energy for my new born son ( he’s 7 months old and I’m 48 ) 5- Having my wife look at me the way she use to when I got out the shower ( she still did , but I was insecure of myself so I never accepted her compliments)

    ANXIETY

I'm having my surgery on June 5th. My insurance had me do that whole dance of going to a therapist and nutritionist for several months before they approved it. I was cleared in April, and set my date for June so I could go on vacation and do a few other things before the surgery. It still had not sunk in that this was happened. Yesterday, I got email from my doctors office with what I needed to do next. Get my labs done, start my diet a week out, and my last appointment and class with my surgeon. That really hit, and I'm excited, and very nervous. My anxiety is at a 10 right now. I just got off the phone with the hospital and I paid them (bonus: I hit my out of pocket max for the year!), and now it's just really hitting hard. I don't think I've felt this much anxiety in years...and that says a lot since I'm an obsessive compulsive. So I need to really keep focused so I don't flip out and run away screaming. I'm guessing this is a normal reaction?
  11. I had my surgery on 3/12/19. I watched my insurance carefully because I'm slightly obsessive about numbers. I had called my insurance several times prior to surgery and was told once I met my out of pocket I was fully covered. Out of pocket was met in January. April I start getting bills. I call the insurance company who keeps patching me through to a company called accolade who says I am fully covered and they don't know why the drs office is saying I owe coinsurance. They will send a note to the insurance company. I have called the drs offices and the insurance company and accolade weekly since April about these bills and started making $10-20 payments so I don't get sent to collection. I just get a call today from Accolade who tells me it's not medically necessary and I owe 30%. I said that is not what I was told the numerous times I called. So they sent me to the insurance company to file an appeal. They are going to pull transcripts of my phone calls and hopefully they will pay the balance of the bill. I owe over $7000 for a surgery that I had because I was told it was 100% covered. And the $7000 is for OUTPATIENT. I work two jobs and am a single mother. I don't have $7000. Anyone have any experience with this?
  12. The other day I attended my monthly group meeting that my surgeons office offers. Any new prospective candidate for WLS has to attend one meeting as per the surgeon. I myself found my first meeting to be very informative as I was allowed to ask the veterans questions that I had about the procedure, life after and how they felt about their experiences. One reason I go to the meetings is to share my experiences and to answer any questions the prospective surgery candidates have. The group is strong with veterans and it runs smooth as everyone is polite and will allow for a cross flow of opinions and experiences. My last meeting was attended by a woman who had WLS 10 years ago and had a 85lb regain. With the help of the surgeons office she lost the excess weight and has a good story to tell. (This was the first time in 2 yrs that I've been attending these meetings that she has attended) She not only gave us the long version of her story but when the prospective candidates asked a question she went into long winded answers. This of course cut the time others could have spoke and to offer their prospectives. It got to the point where one of the veterans put his hands to his head as to simulate shooting himself. She still didn't get the message. Finally, one other veteran gave the nurse practitioner who runs the meeting the "evil eye" and for a short time, decorum was back. Of course with this woman it only lasted a few minutes. It should be understood, that when attending a group meeting it is important to get as many people into the conversation as possible to get the best benefit from the meeting. By having one person dominate the meeting it not only limits the knowledge gained it also makes those attending frustrated that their voices cannot be heard. After the meeting a few of us spoke to the nurse practitioner and said that if this continues into future meetings we will not be attending and that it was her responsibility to monitor the meeting so this does not happen again. Let's see if this woman comes back next month and if so, lets see if she doesn't monopolize the time.

I had my sleeve back in April 10th .. the only complication I really had was acid reflux.. GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +

Gsgbutterfly, I would not stay alone for the first few days because it is really painful to get up to go to the bathroom. The less you have to use your abdominal muscles as they heal for the first 2 weeks the better, and maybe will heal faster than the 2 weeks of you can avoid using those muscles. I did better after I purchased an abdominal binder, and I wish I had bought or rented a lift chair recliner for the first couple of weeks since I did not have much help. We are big people, and just sitting up puts more strain on the surgical incisions than the 10 lbs we are allowed to carry the first few weeks. And laying down flat or rolling over is a very bad idea during that time. Ice packs are necessary. Sleeping half sitting up in a recliner is not comfortable but is better than laying in bed. Hope this helps.
  15. Do what’s best for you. No regrets that I did this. I am maintaining five years out in the 130s. I needed a long-term solution. I have lost before but have struggled to keep it off. I am a sleeve and I bounced back from surgery quicly with no complications. My weight loss was fast (not the norm) I'm maintain. I do indulge within reason. If I gain 5 to 10 pounds, I go back to my weight loss mode diet and work it back off. Here is my dietician’s recipe website for food ideas. The pain is temporary - but don't discount it! I was not mentally prepared for the incision pain. I walked all my gas out before leaving the hospital but that incision pain is no joke! You use your core for everything and they just sliced through all the layers of it and yanked out your stomach! Just be prepared. I was fortunate enough to get 10 days of liquid hydrocodone. After that adult liquid Tylenol worked well.

    Incision pain

Oh the incision pain! I was not prepared for that and when I read about people not having pain it all it just pissed me off! LOL! My surgery was 4/22/19 and I still have some pain when bending over to pick up things. But, this week has been the best week by far when it comes to the pain. I managed most of the time after week 2 with no pain meds but like Sunday night I was in pain from being very active that day - walking the dog a couple times, cleaning, doing laundry, so I did take some tylenol. It still hurts a bit to lay down flat to sleep and especially when I roll over. Just a pulling sensation. Hang in there!
  18. Hello! My name is Taylor and I am 25 years old. I am 5' 4" and my weight fluctuates around 235-250. I've struggled with my weight since I was a pre-teen despite being active. My mother got gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) about 10 years ago and has been very successful. I've tried many diets (WW, Profile by Sanford, Whole30, Keto, calorie counting) and nothing ever sticks and I always go back to my range weight of 235-245. I can never lose more than 20 pounds and always end up going back to the weight I've mentioned above. I would love to get this surgery sometime soon, and I am in the process of setting up a consult with a bariatric surgeon. I have a trip to Italy and Ireland for two weeks in September. And then my family and I are spending Christmas in Hawaii (Ive never been). Half of me wants to get the surgery sometime soon, before going to Europe to look and feel better so I can look back on this trip positively. On the other hand, my mom mentioned that I should wait until after Europe so I can enjoy the food (which Italy is known for). I could try to lose some weight before then, but then I dont think I would be eligible for surgery because my BMI would be lower. And I know I will just go back to my weight range eventually and go through the never ending cycle with my weight. Can anyone offer some advice? Any would be much appreciated! Thank you

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hey welcome to the group as an official poster! Secondly, CONGRATS on your successes to this point. So many times we tend to overlook the good things we’ve done because they aren’t “good enough” at this point to satisfy us. Goodness gracious you’ve dropped TWENTY PERCENT of your body weight so far which is amazing progress! Give yourself a pat on the back and then go over any journals or food diaries that you have and see where things were going “better” and “not-as-better”. Maybe you can spot a trend? For me, my biggest hurdles are stress and sleep and usually they hold hands together to try to derail me. The studies on increased levels of cortisol and its effects on weight loss are downright depressing when you take a look at them. Also, if you’ve been bobbing for 5 weeks, time to schedule an appt with your nutritionist/doctor/therapist/trainer just to be sure that there’s not something that you’re missing. This week I redoubled my efforts to log food and water and I even journaled in my personal diary for a bit this morning because I don’t want to allow myself to fall into a negative head space. I also went out and cut some herbs from my garden and put them in a vase. It took about 5 minutes and it made me feel more positive about the day. Besides, I made hubs take the scale away for 10 days, so I got to save those 5 minutes by not agonizing on the scale this morning. 🤣🤣🤣 Take a deep breath, take a walk, smell some flowers. We will figure out how to do this thing.
  20. I had my bypass May 6, 2019 and I also have pcos... I’m also down 23 pounds as well. I lost 9 pounds during my 5 day pre liquid diet and 14 pounds after surgery. This is Day 10 for me from surgery.

    Over active salivary glands

O.K. , So you had surgery just a few days ago on 13 May 2019. It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. Sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I also found a new drink Bai which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate hot drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.
  22. Hahaha clearly still a little crazy on the drugs! 2019 not 1984 😂😂😂

    Recovery

I walked 3 times on surgery day, the next day I walked 4 times and was discharged on that day. I walked 20 minutes this morning on the treadmill at home.. Surgery was 5/13/2019 hope this helps
  24. I’ve noticed recently that I am able to eat more than I was before. I had one occasion where I ate too much and got sick in the past but other than that I have eaten small, below the size portions that I should (bc I stop as soon as I feel anything). Is this normal? I have had a huge fear since surgery of screwing this up. I know I haven’t overeaten over and over to screw it up but how is it I’m able to eat more? I am still losing. Slowly but surely. Goal Dr set was 145. My goal is 135. Started st 231 Pre op-221 Current weight-143 I am very happy with the weight loss. I just want it to stay off.
