  1. I just found out that my surgery has been approved by the insurance company. On August 20th I start a new chapter in my life. I'm nervous and excited. This has been a big decision and I am praying I have a healthy and successful journey. I am 46 been overweight Almost all my life. My husband is on board but nervous about the surgery. I have 2 children my daughter who is 26 and excited for me and a 15 year old by who is nervous about me having the surgery too. Now that I'm at the end of the mandatory requirements I feel relieved. My next thing is the 2 week diet before my surgery. One week of that I'm on vacation. I have to be diligent and stick to the program. But I'm sure it won't be easy.

    The struggles are real!

I just had surgery on Monday. Before that I had a 4 week optifast diet. We had to have 5 protein supplements per day and could have one small very specific meal. It was extremely hard to do the first week. That is when the body is detoxing and withdrawing from the carbs, sugars, caffeine, etc. It will cause a severe headache. After that first week, it gets much, much easier. Stick to it and you will see. You want your liver to be as small as possible for surgery and it will be well worth it!
  3. Kellythestar!! U *should be* excited!!! This is the coolest thing for those of us who have struggled and yo-yo'd forever!!! I was sleeved 2/13/12 and, praise God and knock on wood, have had no problems. Sure the first couple days after were not a party but they were doable and soon u feel better & better every day!! Since the week b4 surgery til now I've lost 30# so believe me it will work for u and u will not have all that much hunger. Only periodically do I notice I'm a bit hungry which is prolly when I've gone more than 2-3 hrs without getting in some protein. U really aren't hungry and when u do eat, it is very minimal and u r so full!!! I love it!!! I'm excited for u and believe u r going to do great and recover fast!! Best wishes!!

    What Is Going On?

If you are having leg cramps you are probably not drinking enough Water. And it's natural to be fatigued at this stage. My first 2 weeks I needed a nap after taking a shower.
  5. Thanks for the post Beckidid. *sigh* I'm three weeks banded, and getting discuraged. Thanks for the post.

    SMALL SCALE VICTORY FINALLY

Good luck to you. I will be calling my doctor today to send the deposit and book the surgery date. I'm sooo excited. If I get the date I want it will be 9 weeks from today.

    SMALL SCALE VICTORY FINALLY

Hi, I wondered where you were, hadn't seen you on here for awhile. Mind you, I have been spending most of my time reading old posts. I am so pleased you have broken your stall, I know how hard you have been working at doing everything you can to practise. I too have been trying really hard, and my 'milk' diet is beginning to pay off. It too, is really hard though, and I just wish they would allow us to add Protein to our drinks as I think I would be a lot less hungary and lose more weight. One more visit eh, not long to go now. I shall be sending positive thoughts your way in the hope everything is approved and you get your 'date' at last. Good luck and keep on 'practising'

Day 4 Pain is this normal

Hi. 5 weeks out and still feel the port from time to time. I feel it when I bend down low especially. Picking up the kids and going to the store will be fine. I picked up a 20 lb. bag of dog food the other day and thought I would croak. Wasn't ready for that! Good luck.

Day 4 Pain is this normal

Yep day 3 and four port site ain was pretty bad for me, doc said ice, not more than 15 min at a time on the port site and keep on the schedule for the pain meds for at least the first week. Do NOT overdo it. Don't carry more than 20 pounds, don't bend over. I have a front load washer and have to get down on my knees to load it and switch clothes, it is EASY to overdo it, just rest and only do the stuff that HAS to be done and that no one can do for you. Everything can wait...they wont remember you being a superhero for washing an extra load of laundry and hurting yourself....so take care of YOU!

    Wondering

yep- asked my doc a couple weeks ago... when we eat too much the pouch is too full, pushes the band into the diaphragm, causing the referral pain in the shoulder. it SUCKS.

    New beginning

Congrats! I can say the first 2 weeks were Hell!!! I kept saying "why did I do this?" It was a hormonal roller coaster! But it got way easier once I started eating actual food.. You will get through it and all the different things that change. I am a year out, I've lost all the weight I needed to, to be my ultimate goal weight and I would do it again in a heartbeat! Good luck!
  12. How long are people wearing the abdominal binders post op? I’m only 2 weeks but it feels like I’ll be depending on this thing forever! I’m a nurse and going back to work with this in a few weeks is not something I want to do lol

    Have a personal question

If you do want to purchase some, I did find these online. Personally, I was able to wipe my bum by going around via the "backside" v. the front - but I will admit it was a bit painful for the first week after surgery.
  14. So much has happened since my post. I had my band removed on April 13th. All of the pain I was having is just GONE!!! The day before surgery, my surgeon called to tell me that I was going to hopefully have surgery the next day as long as insurance approved. So on the morning of surgery, I headed to the hospital and while enroute I got the call from the insurance company that I had hoped for. I was approved to have my band removed and the sleeve done! I was dumbfounded and speechless. As my insurance was notified just two days prior. I arrived at the hospital and spoke with my surgeon. She said as long as there was not a ton of damage from my band she would do both surgeries. But everything hinged on the fact that the band needed to not cause to many issues. I agreed with the surgeon and told her I would rather be safe than sorry! So I went into surgery not knowing what I was going to end up with when I woke up. When I woke up, my Mom told me that the surgeon was only able to remove my band. My band had left an extreme amount of swelling and she felt it would be safer to wait so that the stitches for my sleeve could be placed exactly where she wanted them to go. I have to admit I was disappointed by not waking up to my sleeved stomach, but I also know that the relief I felt from the band be gone was amazing! No more pain!!! The only pain I had was surgical pain. I went to the surgeon for a follow up this week. She said everything is looking good. I go back on May 3rd for another Upper GI to determine if the swelling has decreased enough for her to perform my sleeve. So here is hoping that all goes well on May 3rd. I am suppose to go to the Czech Republic and Scotland in June and I am hoping that surgery will be able to work around this trip. I know this sounds crazy, but I am torn between going over seas first and then doing my sleeve when I come home. Any thoughts? Nichole
  15. Today is my first Thanksgiving since being "sleeved" on April 30th. My journey in pre-op began November 1st, 2013 and since then I have lost 140 lbs!!!! I am 22 pounds to goal, and I feel fantastic!! This journey has come with some sacrifices. It is not a quick fix, however, it is a wonderful tool, if you use it correctly! I exercise 5 days a week or more, I eat clean, avoid all carbs and sugars, and live on Protein, veggies, and a tiny bite of fruit now and then. I weigh and log everything that I possibly can on My Fitness Pal and I am sticking to an 800 calorie diet until I reach goal. I am bummed at times that I can't eat some of the yummy foods my family and others are eating, but I am in such a different mindset now that I get over it within minutes and I just keep on doing my thing. For those of you considering this surgery, I say DO IT, but keep in mind that it's not a quick fix and it won't make you "skinny" if you aren't willing to do the work. Yes, you can eat whatever you want in small amounts and lose weight initially, but from what I hear, keeping it off is the hard part. If you don't change/break those bad habits now how will you keep the weight off? That's been the struggle for us all along, right?? Just some "food for thought" on this food-laden day. Happy Thanksgiving, all! Stay healthy and eat healthy today (and a bit of exercise won't hurt, either). Your body will be thankful!
  16. Go to this site and register (name and address) and then print the certificate, it is good for a free Nick(it) t-shirt. I printed one for everyone in my family and we all got a free shirt today. They are in the mens department and were $26.00, on sale this week for $14.99 but the offer is 1 free shirt per customer. I didn't even get charged tax. There are several cool shirts and my Pennys even had some long sleeved shirts. Here is the link: http://nickitworld.com/tshirt/registration.php My sister says she is going back tomorrow for some more shirts, we were told that the promotion is from Nick(it) and the sales people get credit for the $14.99 price towards their sales for the day. They also had several racks of clothing at 75% off and there were racks labeled $3.77 and $1.77 all over the store, I got 3 really nice shirts for my upcoming vacation for $12.16 total.~Mandy
  17. Whenever I'm complaining about the scale not moving fast enough...my husband always say....You know, sex is good exercise. He might have ulterior motives. But he's right, it is. It's cardiovascular...has some extra incentives. Why not? If you have a partner, think about the caloric benefits of being spicy a little more often. The average person burns about 144 calories for a half an hour of sex (including massage, pre-sex silliness, etc) So think about it....if you added sex every day....that's an extra thousand calories you're burning every week!

    Swelling

I wish i knew. I look like a cone belly and I'm 12 days out and can't wait until it the swelling goes down. I had my gallbladder out I think it was 3 weeks, my hysterectomy 1-1/2 months, my c-section about 1-1/2 months. Laparoscopies varied from 3 weeks to 1 month, so I am hoping this doesn't last months. I also had a hernia repair and severe adhesions removed though.

    Food question

I lived on hot and sour soup for days at a time during the first week post-op because it just tasted so good and went down so easily.

    Exercising after surgery

It depends on your surgeons recommendations. I suggest you talk it over with them. I was cleared immediately post op for light activity such as walking, biking, elliptical, light dumbells 1-3 lbs and so forth and so on. They encouraged a minimum of 5 days a week for at least 30 min or as tolerated. At 4 weeks post op, I was cleared to resume my regular activity including resistance training, running, zumba etc. I did have a hernia repair. So I took it slowly and gradually worked my way up. One day I was on an ab machine and my stomach began to spasm so I immediately stopped and took that as a sign that my body wasn't quite ready for that. I continued with my cardio, and resistance of other muscle groups-- waited a few more weeks for the abs and tried it again-- perfectly fine. Sounds like you're doing great so far!!! This should be a blast for you-- Look forward to seeing updates from you. Good Luck!!!

    well, I just found out...

I stopped really trying to diet in that I don't want to stay hungry. If I am hungry, I eat. I have now moved from about 3 meals a day to about 5 on average although they are still small, but I am still making sure that I am eating the good healthy stuff and avoiding the unhealthy stuff 95% of the time (of course this does not include my first week back in the US after Halloween, I am blocking that whole week from my memory . . . it didn't happen, it didn't happen, lol). However, if I had a cheesecake in my house (perhaps pumpkin or lemon or maybe even a mocha swirl) . . . there is no telling how much I would eat of it over the course of a week . . . maybe the whole darn thing. I am trying, trying, trying not to bring that stuff in the house, lol. My intake is definitely up, but I am down to 141 as of this morning which is quite a shock. I began this pregnancy somewhere around 155. I can't understand how I can go from a really restrictive diet with tons of exercise to a loose diet with extra calories . . . and 5 days a week of exercise to maybe 2 1/2 days (since I decided to take naps instead on the other days, lol) and still continue to lose weight. I feel like I have just been lucky for now . . . my metabolism must be really cranking since there is no other explanation for it. I am just hoping it doesn't all catch up with me at once during the last trimester.
  22. I'm so tempted to stray from my diet. I know I shouldn't but going out and having a drink sounds so good right now.

How to get rid of gas

I had the same thing for the first three days and all I could do was put a heating pad on it and walk as much as I could to release the gas. I'm post-op day 5 now and my shoulder pain is gone. Hope that helps some! Good luck!

    Vomitting

Hi Jskelly. I was having the same problem. I called my nurse and they had me switch from non-fat milk to almond milk. They say I am most likely intolerant now. I had a really difficult time with eating post surgery. So I tried so many different things. Sugar free pudding, soup, popsicles. Split pea is what I lived on for the first 2 weeks. I just started the squishy stage and things seem to be ok so far. I just c as not tell if I'm full or not and it scares me to eat. I did learn that getting the hiccups is a way of your body telling me to stop eating. I wish you luck. It does get easier. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
