  1. I am happy to hear you finally have your surgery date. Don't stress over any of it and just follow what your doc suggests. My surgery and recovery have gone extremely well. I did hit a stall for a week in my weight loss but am doing all according to plan and it will turn around. I pray all will go as well for you.     When/How to buy new clothes

    Update: I initially started this post WAY back. I've gone from a 3x/24 to a M/10! What I did was buy some stuff at thrift stores, and then a few things in stores/online, just enough for a week's worth of clothes in any one size. I have found that I can actually wear things a BIT big, so for example, the pants I just bought (one pair of casual pants and one pair of jeans) are a size 10, but today I am wearing size 14 dressier pants, which are loose, but since they're stretchy, they don't look ridiculous. Also, I have some shirts in every size from S-XL that fit. I had all sorts of hopes to get everything from thrift stores but in the end, I am too picky for that. I have been donating my "bigger" clothes on Buy Nothing or if no one in my neighborhood wants them, I donate them to the thrift store. Mostly I'm able to give my bigger clothes to my neighbors on Buy Nothing, so they are not going in a landfill just yet!
  4. Pickle salad was just lettuce with cut up pickles. They were just two foods that I was allowed unlimited and who wants to eat just lettuce so I cut up pickles and told myself I could have as much pickle salad as I wanted. When I was on that diet for a week I had steak and grilled onion almost every night. My husband makes really good steak and caramelizes onions on the grill and I figured I would not be able to have steak for quite a while so I ate it till I was sick of it. You can also have chicken and other non starchy veggies.
  5. Thank you for the extremely helpful ideas…pickle salad recipe please? And, believe it or not, I love egg white omelettes so I’m good with those. I’m thinking low calorie with free foods for 2 weeks or more. When I know my surgery date, then I can do 2 weeks strict liver shrinking. Please share any hints you have. And thanks again.
  6. I agree that six weeks would be very hard to sustain if it is all liquid or very strict. Mine was not super strict. I was allowed egg whites and meat as well as low starch veggies plus yogurt and sugar free popsicles or jello. I was also allowed free foods like lettuce and pickles. There were a few other free foods but I can only remember making a lot of pickle salads. lol. Those foods were limited quantities too so I was hungry for those pickle salads. You may be able to handle doing something like that for 6 weeks if you wanted to?? It’s basically just low carb which most of have done but with stricter portion sizes than I had ever done.

    I was told 4 weeks. But really, ask your surgery center, that's what they're there for! I have really been enjoying swimming laps for exercise when I'm home.

    Gaining Weight after 3.5 years

    most of us gain 10-20 lbs from our lowest weight sometime during year 3. I sometimes attend Unjury's virtual support groups, and they had a really interesting dietitian on a couple of weeks ago. She said almost everyone gains at least 5% of their lowest weight, and her clinic doesn't even consider it regain unless the person gains more than 15% of their lowest weight. Anything less than that (i.e., less than a 15% gain) is just normal settling....so that's more or less equivalent to the 10-20 lbs that I mentioned. so, in other words, your "regain" is normal - just the normal rebound that the vast majority of us experience after hitting bottom. Of course, you can always lose weight again by cutting calories - but if your body is now at it's "setpoint", then it'll be a struggle to take it off and keep it off - BUT...it can be done if you're willing to put in the work.

My surgeon's admin told me yesterday that many of his patients choose to start the liver shrinking diet 2 weeks prior to their Results visit which is about a week away. That would put me on liver shrinking eating plan for about 6 weeks which doesn't really interest me, and my nutritionist said that might be difficult to sustain. I agree. I may try something rather modified until the 5/16 visit, and follow my doctor's instructions regarding a liquid diet and a time frame for that. Good luck to everyone here. PS: FTR, my protein shake of choice is FairLife chocolate, and I do like the Gatorade Zero Protein Drinks.

    Hi, all: I started out on the April surgery buddies board. However, my Results visit with my surgeon is Monday, May 16, and I am looking for a surgery date of 6/13. School will be out, and I won't have to stress about recovering. I'm particularly interested in reading surgery and recovery experiences. I've amassed a large amount of useful information in the short amount of time I have been here. My surgeon's admin told me yesterday that many of his patients choose to start the liver shrinking diet 2 weeks prior to their Results visit which is about a week away. That would put me on liver shrinking eating plan for about 6 weeks which doesn't really interest me, and my nutritionist said that might be difficult to sustain. I agree. I may try something rather modified until the 5/16 visit, and follow my doctor's instructions regarding a liquid diet and a time frame for that. Good luck to everyone here.     Leg soreness?

    You might want to check in with your doctor to be sure, but I had a lot of random pain in the first few weeks/months after surgery. I was told that this is normal as your weight "shifts" and you carry yourself differently. It could be that, but again, not a bad idea to check in with your surgery center.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

    My doctor will give 4 weeks off of work, but I'll have surgery on 6/22 and return to work on 6/27. I am primarily at my desk though. I just don't know how my 3 year old is going to handle not being picked up all the time. She's under my physician's guide of "no more than 30lbs in the first 30 days", but I'm not sure I'll feel up to carrying her up a flight of stairs at daycare.

    My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

    Man, I remember my 2 weeks pre-op liquid diet. It was ROUGH. My program had me on 5 shakes a day and I could supplement with 1 single serving of sugar free jello and broth. I would hold onto the broth for dinner so it would feel more comforting and give me something to look forward to after drinking all the shakes. By the time I got to my second week I started blending my shakes with some ice and eat it with a spoon. I kept a countdown on post its and tried to stay really busy. I also tried really hard to focus on the ultimate goal of surgery, which, helped a lot. Life will be different after surgery and some things will be easier, but, others harder. As much as it is a physical journey it is a mental journey even more. Keep plugging away! Every day is one day closer!
  14. I've had pretty much the opposite experience when it comes to keeping things down, but in terms of the other issue, I dealt with it for about half a week until it stopped.

    I think it was around 3 weeks for me... I had that clear gel over my incisions, so I was waterproof! At least that's what the doctor used to tell me. 🙂 My surgery was in mid-August, and I know I got in the pool one more time before it closed down for the season, which would have been around Labor day or the week after.

    Leg soreness?

    I noticed right after surgery that my legs were super sore on even on short walks. Now, I wasn't exactly a marathon runner before surgery, but I also wasn't completely sedentary so it was really strange! It stopped after a few weeks. Not sure if that helps, but I wouldn't worry much since it is also achy soreness. I think surgery just takes a lot out of your body in ways you don't expect.

    Leg soreness?

    Hey, y’all! I’d been walking (more or less) 5 minutes every hour since surgery on 4/20. Yesterday I was busy with work, so I didn’t quite make it hourly. However, I did increase my time in the walks that I did take; 10 minutes up the ramp of my parking garage to the top floor (one floor up.) So today my legs feel really sore and tired. No fever, no hot spots, just aches. Taking my daily blood thinner shots on top of the movement. Should I be worried?! Would anyone recommend compression socks? Other relief? I made the stupid decision to rewatch Dr. Death this week, so now I’m super paranoid about clots and pulmonary embolisms lol

    Thank god someone finally said this!! I can eat about 3 oz of chicken and 1 c of salad in one meal with no problems or feeling of fullness. And the hunger pangs! Omg they’re awful!! I’ve been in a stall since beginning of April. Finally lost 2 lbs this week.

  21. Hi, Brand new to the forum. After a two year journey stalled by covid, a new job and a move across the country, I finally have a surgery date and am now considering canceling. I’ve stuggled with anxiety disorder since my early 20’s - am 54 now -have done lots of therapy but the thought of panic attacks can still bring me to my knees. I take celexa daily. I’m just now-this late into all my research learning that wls can trigger more anxiety and depression. does anyone know why (beyond the obvious food mourning). am wondering if I can proceed. just started day 1 of liquid diet. thank you to anyone who responds

  24. Wow! I’m glad I’m not alone either! Everything is going okay. I was really bummed about the stall but after reading it happens to so many people I have come to terms with it. It’s so hard for me to get 64oz in everyday especially since I wasn’t a huge water drinker before hand. How are you doing with everything? I hope all is well with you too!
  25. A few things: 1. Yep, it's hell week. I tell people that the week before surgery was way worse than what came after. So if you get through this, you will be able to make it. 2. The first 3 days will be the worst (at least until you are in the laxative stage 24 hrs prior to surgery; I was so miserable on that day). Your body will adjust to liquids only after 48-72 hours. 3. The way to endure through those 3 days is to constantly be having liquids. Drink protein shakes until you feel full; if it takes 3 shakes in a row, drink 3 shakes in a row. Eat a whole box of sugar-free popsicles. Eat as much sugar free Jello as you want (assuming that is allowed on your surgeon's plan). Whatever you are allowed to have, drink it without guilt or regret. After your body adjusts, you probably won't feel the desire to gorge, but drown your stomach in liquids until that happens.
