    Drinking

My surgeon said no alcohol until 6 mos. post-op. Internal healing takes quite a long time and drinking alcohol too soon could be an invitation to an ulcer. All forms or alcohol are also essentially sugars which could result in dumping as well. I enjoy a glass of wine before dinner but I didn't go there until I was 6 mos. post-op.

    Drinking

I am 5 months post op... I had my first wine 2 months post op, there has been no difference in the effect of the wine on me what so ever its the same as before surgery. I have not tried vodka yet but when I do it will be at home first...just to see how I react to it. My sister had 2 vodka drinks while having some appetizers w/friends a year after surgery and got trashed - LOL. I think it was because she did not drink for a year. Everyone handles alcohol different, I would do my testing at home first.

    Drinking

My advice would be don't drink. You don't really know how the alcohol will affect you. I had my first glass of wine at home and found out that I get drunk off of two glasses. And I mean drunk, not tipsey, drunk! I used to be able to drink much more. Also you don't want to end up getting sick. Just a little advice, it's your decision of course.

    Cold

Yeah, I had a cold for the past week also. Nyquil did help at night, but not so much during the day. I remember the first time i took it this last week. It burned going down and then kind of lit my empty stomach up a bit. Not too bad, but the 10% alcohol gave me some good sleeps. Good luck!
  5. Hi...I was August 23rd too. Here in the uk they have a slightly different take on the diet - post op...I was on full liquids for two weeks, now on purée, mash ...anything relatively smooth and can eat approx the size of an egg (don't know how much that is in oz) . Have another week on that and them its small meals of any softer meats and fish etc etc. just no bread, alcohol etc for a couple of months. I'm down 20lbs with 64lbs to go:) Big hugs Xx

    Nervouse About Getting A Fill

I had my first fill about a week and a half ago (6 weeks post-op). It wasn't bad, but a little "weird" for me. My surgeon numbed me with a shot of lidocaine first. He put a pillow under my back so my back was arched. He then had me lift up a bit like I was doing a sit up while he pushed around on my belly to find the port. After he found it, he marked it with a pen, swabbed it with alcohol and injected the saline. What was a weird sensation for me was I felt the Water go up the tube. I think as we lose weight, it will be easier for them to find and access the port as it is covered by layers of fat now. Nonetheless, it wasn't a bad experience for me. I drank some water afterwards to make sure I was ok and that was it. If they cannot find it then I believe they may do an xray (flouroscopy?) to help pin point it. I think that is a rare occurence though.

    Anyone For October?

I have a pre-op appt at the hospital (anesthesia, registrar, etc.), pre-op with Surgeon, Bone Density test, Group meeting with Nutrionist and a Group meeting with they Psychologist. Then start my liquid diet 10/5. Supposed to go on a "Girls' Weekend" trip the weekend I start my liquid diet, will be interesting. Does alcohol count on my liquid diet? hahahahahaha

Sugar Free Vs No Sugar Added

Also erinsdsu, you have to be careful with things that say sugar free as well. Somethings say s/f but also say sugar alcohol. And from what my NUT/Doc say that too is not good.

Wls Is Taking The Easy Way Out

Hey Raven.... My parents & whole family were one of those people who thought this operation was the easy way out.... and God knows how many days I spent trying to convince them...why... cause my dad was paying for it ...... they don't know how it is to spend 30 years struggling with weight & moving from one doctor to another & one diet to another... they don't know that food is an addiction as well as drugs & alcohol.... and I am sad to say I was a food addict.... can they imagine someone who can't stop eating for 24 hours.... who is blindly led to the fridge and couldn't help it... so when I started choking in my sleep many times, and had an almost stroke... I just had to stop and think..... I'm going to die soon and my kids will grow up without a mom.... so I had to do this and I fought for it..... I didn't have the money or the support but I struggled and in the end, I didn't get any support from anybody, but at least I got the money ))

    Lack Of Energy

yea increase your protein. alcohol can dehydrate you also. Lack of sufficient protein and or water can cause fatigue. http://vegetarian.lovetoknow.com/Protein_Deficiency_Symptoms

    Lack Of Energy

Alcohol is a depressant and could be contributing to your lack of energy. Maybe increase protein intake and stop drinking alcohol to see how your energy level.
  14. I am still breathless with excitement...and fear. Oct 22 I am getting sleeved! It kinda sucks that it is the day after my birthday, so clearly no food or alcohol based celebrations... but clearly, food and alcohol based celebrations are WHY I am 100lbs overweight, right? I keep - literally - pinching myself to see if this long wait is almost over. I started the program at Kaiser Permanente in November of 2011. And now I have a date. Wow. I am almost giddy.

    Drinking Non-Carbonated Alcohol

I don't have any problem as long as the drink isn't carbonated, but it will absolutely get you drunker faster!!! The band really effects the alcohol absorption.

    The Easy Way.....

This is always an interesting topic and one I've had to figure out for myself as time went on. I think it all depends on how you got here. For me, I did 2 things wrong, I was a compulsive eater and I ate all the wrong foods. Those 2 bad behaviors fueled each other. At 4 months post op I know now that I cannot eat the way I used to eat and rely on the sleeve to control my portions for me. There are just too many slider foods available. A compulsive eater will actively try to eat around the sleeve. I had to learn new behaviors, and I had to learn a new normal. What some people would call a diet, I call a new healthy way of eating, which excludes some foods that I previously enjoyed. I cannot eat those foods in moderation, not just because I'm weak, but because certain foods do contain chemical triggers to entice you to eat more and more of them. I look at it like this, some people can drink alcohol regularly and not become alcoholics, some cant. Well for me, starches were my alcohol. I can't have them in moderation or I will go off the deep end. I feel similarly about chocolate, but I've let my Protein shakes take the place of candy bars so I get to enjoy chocolate everyday....keeps me from feeling deprived I guess. I also discovered something else interesting this weekend. My BIL and SIL came to stay with us for a few days. We had fun, but I realized how much my wife's family centers everything around mealtime. food is not just fuel for them, as it has become for me. It is the cornerstones of the day's activities. After 4 months of eating only when I needed fuel, I realized how much I used to be this way and I hate it now. Every time I turned around we stopped everything for a 2 hour meal. Just seems like wasted time to me now. I can grab my protein and be back on the trail in 20 minutes.
  18. I'm going to attempt to become addicted to exercise and shopping. That sounds much better to me than alcohol. But, all playing aside, this is unfortunately a big problem with any addiction.
  19. I am still pre-op but I go to as many support meetings as possible. Tonight our surgeon came in to talk about some problems some patients who are a few years out are having. He said alcohol abuse is becoming a big concern. He said recent research has shown that 54% of bariatric surgery patients with no problems with alcohol have drinking problems a few years out. Several post op people confirmed that they knew post op people who drink a lot. Some people said that food addiction is replaced by drinking. This whole subject is food (no pun intended) for thought, don't you think? Have any of you heard this before? What else I learned is that bypass surgery is NOT for me. So may people in the room had bypass and they have big problems with hunger and cravings. The few people in the room who were sleeved didn't have those problems. I knew that the sleeve is what I wanted from the get-go, but this decision is reconfirmed regularly by what I learn along the way.

    Pasta As A Soft Food?

All that is important to add to this thread is that many bandsters have an addiction to carbs to thank for their obesity. That said, why would you want to feed your addiction?? My entire purpose of going through band surgery was to break that cycle with carbs, and get of the slippery slope towards Type II diabetes. That can only happen if you retool your thinking about food and change your patterns of eating and choices for meals. Why would you want to feed an addiction? To me a reasonable comparison would be to offer only alcoholic beverages to participants at an AA meeting...and please no offense to any of Bill W's friends, only written for illustrative purposes... Not a good idea to have Pasta post op...

    Eyes Opening

Obesity is the last of the 'politically correct' prejudices. It's so true. The sad thing about having a food problem is that everyone can see your problem. Almost all other human 'problems' can be hidden from the general population, drug abuse, sex addicts, alcoholics, racists whatever...but obesity is obvious to others what your problem is and so everyone feels it is ok to comment on it or feel superior to those who struggle. Here's what I never understood...why are you superior if you are an alcoholic or a smoker or a drug abuser? No one ever has to smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs but we all HAVE to eat. Its easier to give up something completely than to 'limit' it. I have been obese all my adult life. It has held me back in soooo many ways. I hope losing this excess weight will help me to 'dare' to do some of those things I should have done a long time ago. Here's to new horizons!

    2Oz White Wine With Water

My surgeon said no alcohol for six months. There are a number of reasons behind that recommendation. Internal healing takes quite a long time and drinking alcohol prior to the pouch being completely healed is an invitation for ulcers. All forms of alcohol are essentially sugar which can result in dumping. Alcohol is empty calories with essentially no nutritional value. And since it hits you so much faster and harder than it did before, it can make it more difficult to follow the protocol. All good reasons and I would not encourage anyone to drink alcohol prior to six months out. I enjoy a glass of wine with dinner. But I didn't even try it until I was six months out. We all have to make our own decisions but it's a good idea to consider all of the pros and cons.

Yum! How far out are you? My plan says no alcohol for a year! Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk
  25. I officially weigh 135.0. That was my goal when I started this just over 14 months ago. It is just unreal I cannot believe I am here. I have lost 141 pounds and am in size 4 or 6 pants. I just want everyone to know - I am no one special - I have been horrible about exercise, continued to drink alcohol, to cheat on slider foods sometimes, the list goes on and on. BUT, i went to every single dr. appt and got all my fills - got good tight restriction about 6 months in (yes it is all will power before you hit restriction which can take several months) and stick to my surgeon recommended 800-900 calories per day about 80% or 85% of the time. I love this site and will continue to be on it daily as I work to maintain this weight (a whole new chapter). BEST OF LUCK TO US ALL ON OUR JOURNEYS!!!!
