Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Gina I know I'm driven by results as well. I gained 1lb but it is also that time of the month and I'm usually good for a 5lb weight gain. When I went from clear liquids to mushies I lost 4lbs. Maybe it is time to fully graduate to solid foods. Trying to finish up the stuff I made in bulk. I just had a 3oz turkey burger for dinner, and am amazingly full - not stuffed, just comfortable. I guess maybe I should try to increase intake and see if that helps.

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Thanks, Tracy...no, it's not the medication. I've only been taking it a few days and it's not known to have weight gain/loss issues. Neither is the anti-depressant I'm taking. Prozak is the one that is notorius for weight stalls; I don't take that. It's just my slow metabolism! Thankfully I have my old LC journal still online and this is just my pattern: stall for weeks, lose a few pounds, stall for weeks, lose a few pounds...etc. I can't believe how you are just losing like a maniac now!! You're a FILL believer now, arent you?!

    Carnie Wilson's weight gain

It is possible with the band or with GBP to eat "around" it and regain. Slider foods, high calorie drinks can cause weight gain. Either procedure is a "tool" that you must help to work and neither is a "magic wand".
  4. You've moved from a no-residue diet to one that lingers in your gut--which in and of itself can account for a bit of extra weight. In addition, you've upped exercise. While it's too soon to be seeing muscle gain, it's very likely that your muscles are holding onto some Fluid. This happens when the muscles cells do not get enough oxygen from the air you breathe. In order to stay well-oxygenated, they revert to lactic acid fermentation--a process that produces oxygen and the metabolic by-product, lactic acid. When the lactic acid level in your muscle cells increases, the body strives to maintain homeostasis by equalizing this concentration differential. Fluid moves into the cells---causing them to swell. The body is usually very efficient when it comes to flushing out this fluid, but temporary weight gain can be expected, post-workout. Keep doing what you're doing---and don't be scared to eat. The weight IS going to come off. In fact, you're losing fat now. It's just that the number on the scale doesn't tell the whole story
  5. My Birth control sends TOM packing, but I blame my weight gain on the birth control instead of TOM. (Depo Provera shot)
  6. I havn't seen TOM in over 20 years, but blame some weight gain on lack of hormones.

    Any January 2010 Bandsters????

CherieLynne, don't forget that Prednisone and cortisone have steroids in them and those can actually make you gain weight. I went in for a fill yesterday and had this talk with my doctor because I have been sick with bronchiolitis and I had to go on a steroid in my nebulizer twice a day and was worried about weight gain. So while on steroids your weight loss might not be as much as if you weren't on them...Just keep that in mind. I know my weight loss was very low while I was on steroids plus I haven't been able to work out. Good Luck!!
  8. Claudia, I have been on a variety of antidepresants for several years, and regardless of the sideeffects of possible weight gain-you need to acknowledge the benefits. I may have gained some weight over the several years but I really think the benefits of the medication definately outweigh the few pounds. Best of luck on your journey, remember you and your health are the most important.
  9. You know, I'm at 8cc in a 10 cc band. I don't feel any restriction at all. I'm stuck in a plateau... am back on metformin 2 times a day for diabetes and now on lantus at night due to morning highs... My doc tells me that the metformin won't cause weight gain and the lantus is such a low dose, that it should not be affecting my weight loss.... All I know is that within a week of going back on the metformin... I've lost only 4 lbs... and that was 6 months ago. I'm very frustrated... Any ideas out there?

    Can I eat watermelon?

Watermelon has the more sugar than a lot of other melons, if someone wants fruit, there are better options. It is not a low carb fruit. Just because it isn't as high as a pineapple or a banana doesn't mean its low carb. Not to mention it has basically no Protein. We are talking about a person fresh from surgery, not someone in maintenance. @@JMarshall Even right some surgery, Water melon is going to basically be a slider food. Full of sugar, and no protein. Any weight loss patient could sit and eat an entire watermelon if they wanted if they don't dump. It is going down a slippery slope very early on. I am almost 5 years out and I still can't eat a lot of watermelon at 1 time. I have been eating watermelon(juice and slices) since my second month. I am down over 270 pounds as of last week. Yes it can be a slider food but that does not take away it's benefits. I gravitated towards eating cold watermelon because it didn't hurt my stomach early on and hydrated me. Lots of foods are sliders but that does not mean that they are all bad. Just as we cannot blame the fork for being overweight we can't blame watermelon for weight gain. Moderation is key with everything we eat. We can't eliminate everything that has carbs or sugar , but we can be mindful of how much we take in. Sent from my Nexus 6 using the BariatricPal App

    June Post Ops!

I DID IT!!! I finally broke though to the 120s! So excited this morning to see 129.6! I want to maintain between 128 - 132. I feel like I am there! At six months old I was pulled off formula and put on skim milk due to excessive weight gain. I do not remember a day in my life when I was not trying to lose weight or thinking about how out of control my weight was. I have to say that NOT wanting to lose more weight is really a foreign and kind of scary feeling! I guess it's going to take time to get used to it! Carol
  12. My friends and family all know I am going to Mexico for the surgery. That's just the kind of person I am, very open and honest. I don't hide anything. My dad is nervous about it being done in Mexico so he is going with me. He said he talked to his doctor about it yesterday, he is very overweight and having some health problems now. She talked to him about the pros and cons and he wants to wait and see how my surgery and progress goes before he decides to have it done. My dad was always super skinny when he was younger and this weight gain is really getting him down so I think he's hoping it works well for me. That just motivates me even more knowing he will be watching me.
  13. Anyone else experience weight gain years after Gastric-Sleeve? I'm almost 200 lbs again and very frustrated. I know a few things I'm doing wrong - not getting enough nutrient dense foods, too many non- nutrients rich foods/calories - not enough water *I hate drinking water - not enough exercise - Depression and stress have taken their toll. Now I need to 'start over'. WIth a busy life - 4 children ages 10-30 and 2 3 yo grandchildren - 3 part time jobs - volunteer positions at church - it's hard to focus on self-care. I need help, encouragement, focus and answers to reverse the effects of it all. Hoping to get some practical advise here to help me get my life back on track. I want to live a long healthy life and just struggle with the enormity of variety and choices in the diet and health world...

8 years post op - weight gain

agree with "Fluffychix" "you have to your health a priority." I was pushing and fighting for revision "due to GERD, gastritis, a hernia and weight gain." I fought for revision. Lost some battles and now on the road to winning. I can possibly get revised. However, when I achieved my goals over the mandatory next 6 months waiting period? I will no longer need revision. Well, I hope with medical support my weight loss and health goals will be achieved. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. FWIW, I am over 50 and the weight does start to add health concerns over time. For me, its osteoarthritis in my knees and hips, severe sleep apnea, high BP, high CH. Add menopause, because it exacerbates weight gain. And I'm pre-pre-diabetic. So....consider going to a seminar and starting the process -- nobody says you have to have the surgery in the end, a fair number of people on this board drop out before they cross the finish line. As part of the process, my PCP and FOUR specialists think its a great idea for me. Best wishes to you!

    March Bandsters: MASTER THREAD

Amanda- I still see my life coach once a month. I think it is money well spent. I am hoping to go to an as needed basis after the first of the year. It has been over a year since I started seeing her and she is just a great source of support for me. I think I am finally settling into my band. Quite a few people at work noticed how much I've lost and are in awe so far. It feels good to get compliments and encouragement from co-workers. I had a few rough weeks but no weight gain (thank goodness). Where the heck is Jonathan???? Shall we go to New York and hunt him down?

    March Bandsters: MASTER THREAD

HI guys....I've been MIA for a few weeks, and have just read all the posts I have missed. Sounds like many of you are doing all the right stuff to get back on track. Congratulations on the re-comittment to yourself! Scrappy, so glad to hear that your healing is going well. You are an inspiration. Amanda, sounds like the trip to Alaska and the memorial for your mom all went well. Been thinking about you. I have more issues....as Fenton so kindly once pointed out I must have been really bad in a previous life.... I have lumps....on my hips....they are weird. I felt one in the shower one day a few weeks ago and figured it was a lipoma (benign fatty lump) No biggy! Well, over the next week a new one popped up on the other side that was painfull...so I took a look at work one day. Well, it did not look like any lipoma I had ever seen and surprise, surprise there were many of them. I showed a couple of radiologists and they immediatly suggested getting a biopsy. Of course life does not move that quickly.... Now after another sonogram and consults with my doctor and another radiologist I have a CT scan of the pelvis scheduled for Weds and an appointment with a surgeon scheduled for August 3rd (masses on the hip are not so urgent). They are doing the CT scan before they will do a ultrasound guided biopsy of the largest lesion on my left hip....that's the fastest growing and the strangest looking on ultrasound. Well....it no longer hurts and it seems to have slowed the growth...all good things. The worst it could be as far as I can tell is a liposarcoma and the most likely is fat necrosis (but why the heck is the fat around my hips dying/growing/hurting?????) I figure if it's not cancer of some kind, maybe it will be one more thing to present to the insurance when I want my tummy tuck. If I have panniculitis (fat necrosis) it would be a good reson for a panniculectomy, and maybe they could fix my hernia at the same time. The stress of all this combined with my mother having hip replacement surgery and my lovely husband thinking I am having an affair (HA-HA-HA) has led me to a 13 pound weight gain over my lowest weight. YUCK! Still have a very hard time with solid Proteins (empty band) and the bad stuff goes down oh so easy! Christine

Looks like we are all surviving the holidays. No weight gain would be a great task. Remember those holiday season when and added 5-10 # would be the norm. Just think where we all were a year ago and how far we have all come since then. Congratulations to all of us!!

    Seeking Buddies 5'2" & Under

Has anyone else noticed the increased snoring with weight gain? I think I may have always been a light snorer (is that even a word?! lol), but it's getting ridiculous now! For those of you who snored before, can you tell a difference after losing weight?!

    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

Wellbutrin is like lexapro but different from effexor. Seriously, it depends on how you feel. I was given lexapro, I didn't gain and I didn't lose and I didn't feel better same with paxil. I took effexor, which is a tough drug to get used to and a tough drug to get off of! I experienced insane side effects, including major weight gain. The drug made me feel good and made me forget to watch what I eat(seriously). I switched to wellbutrin after a near 40lb weight gain, which was supposed to help me lose, while feeling better, it didn't. But, I didn't gain either. You're not going to know until you take them how it will effect you. It's different with everyone. It's good that you have the sleeve to help in that respect, right?

    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

Do antidepressants lead to weight gain on their own or do they just change a person's appetite?
  22. I should add that my weight started coming on when I hit 53 then I started attempting MRC, HCG, Nutri Systems, Jenny Craig, Optifast, and Weight Watchers (several times). Each attempt was soon followed with weight gain. But no more.
  23. Every anti-depressant impacts each person differently. Just because the side effects doesn't list weight gain, it could still happen despite best efforts. Be patient - it takes 4-8 weeks for each medicine to prove (or not prove) itself. One of the reasons I had the VSG was to help control the impact of psych medicines on my weight and general health. It's working!

    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

Thank you. good to know about the extended release. since alot of doctors dont even know what the sleeve is at least I can say what I cant have. My sister-in-law is on Prozac and she has gained significantly, despite watching what she eats, etc. She feels better but In my situation I don't think "feeling better" will offset weight gain at this point.
  25. Not that I have ever heard of. Google only comes up with SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) as causing weight gain. I definitely have slow motility, but not really any other SIBO symptoms. I'll have to ask my gastroenterologist ex next time we talk ....hmmm ...
