I get asked this all the time. I always say if you are doing it just to loose weight then don't, the side effects are a lot to deal with. If you are doing it for mental health problems then do it.

Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*
HE_TheBrave replied to TheWeightisOvr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Glad to find this thread. I’m definitely a slow loser and I’m trying really hard to stay encouraged. I was 255 my day of surgery. 6 weeks out I weighed in at 249. Not even 10 pounds. And I’m doing everything that I was instructed to do. Staying on the diet, watching my portions, tracking my meals, the 20 20 20, getting the right amount of protein, drinking enough fluid, exercising every day. I am honestly very discouraged to not see any real movement. But it is encouraging to know that I’m not alone. But I’ve definitely had moments where I wondered, what was the purpose of going through all this and getting the surgery, if almost 2 months out, I’m not even at 15 pounds weight loss? The doctors and dietitian say I’m not doing anything wrong and to be patient, but I feel it’s much easier to say that than it is to be dealing with it. Just had to vent that. Now I’m in tears smh. But I’ll keep swimming. -
Average Weight Loss In 6 Months
Arabesque replied to Crisscat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, there are a lot of variations & factors that influence your rate of loss. I’d lost all my weight by 6 months so 31kg (68lbs). I lost another almost 12kgs over about the next 11 months (got slower & slower). Wasn’t intentional. Just trying to sort out maintenance & it seemed to be where my body wanted to be. -

Regret is normal and part of the process for many
Reluctantsleever replied to SleeverSk's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hang in there and get the surgery. While I’m not “morbidly” obese, I rank as obese. You’re right…..terrible words that do nothing to forward treating ourselves with loving kindness. I did however have knee replacements, both sides in 2015 and 2016 which gave me my life back. If losing the weight can allow you to get a knee surgery it gives you an extra incentive. Good luck with the process and getting a date! -
How many post sleeve or bypass have the dreaded loose skin? Did you get it removed? Im sure its added weight still there and I imagine it could be a few pounds lost if removed. Im almost anticipating it to be bad for me. Im not sure if my insurance would pay or not. Pretty sure its considered cosmetic. I may pay out of pocket just to finally rid myself of it. Good thing is my Dr who does the sleeve also removes excess skin from weight loss but you have to maintain weight for 1 year before its even considered.

I know weight loss varies with everyone but I was wondering what the average weight loss was by 6 months post op for a sleeve? Bypass can throw in their results too If you dont mind sharing what your results were at that milestone month.....thanks

Regret is normal and part of the process for many
Crisscat replied to SleeverSk's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I havent had the sleeve surgery yet but its supposed to be sometime mid May or end of May. Still waiting on scheduling to call me. I havent started regretting it yet since Ive not had surgery but I have gone back and forth numerous times of asking myself do I really want to do this. Sometimes its yes and sometimes its no, I believe my mind is just trying to talk me out of it because its the "unknown" as to how my body will react. I have to say honestly I am very fortunate as I am not on pills for high blood pressure, diabetes or anything else. Im just morbidly obese (I hate those words lol) What I do have is a knee injury from about 15 yrs ago that I have severe osteoarthritis from and I was just told this past week that I need a knee replacement! Im only 53 so I said no, whats my other options. I was told therapy and cortisone/steroid shots in the knee to maybe postpone it. I was also told at my current weight I could not be a candidate because I am too big *sighs*. So Im seeing this surgery as beneficial and something I need to do for my overall health, knee issues and I still have a young son at home who needs me to live an active life (he's 11). If I get in the muddy grub mindset I try to direct my thoughts in another direction. Not saying that after surgery will be different or that I may not start regretting it but I have goals I need to see through to the end if at all possible I have heard the same thing about the gas pains but Ive also heard people say they took Gas X and walked alot and that seems to help dissipate it. Hoping to stay positive going down this road and your words from your experience is very helpful. Thank you for sharing! -

I found I still dislike cooking, but there is always something to learn about weight loss. Most of meaningful permanent weight loss seems to be learning a new way to think. That’s why this meeting place is important. WW never really addressed it in any depth, neither do the support groups at my center. -
Why Do People Think It's Okay To Tell You You're Fat?
Lkmhoots replied to GradyCat's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Same with my mom. She majorly projected her childhood bullies on to me “you’ll never have more friends if you don’t lose weight” ( I had plenty) jokes on her, the goal weight of 145 was what I was at when she was the harshest in high school —if only I had the backbone then to tell her to shove it. It caused me to believe I looked like I was 300lbs when I was 1/2 that, that I was ugly and undesirable. Moms can suck. My therapist I started seeing postop has me challenging self talk and the negative things that have happened in the past and has me writing what I wish she would have said or what I would say or do in the situation we’re roles reversed -
I had my sleeve done in April of 2012. Had decent success until 2018 when I gained ALL of the weight back. I am now 2 weeks away from getting a re-sleeve. It is with a differnt surgeon this time due to the fact my original surgeon won't do it. I am very nervous. I worry about the actual surgery. Mostly because I already have staples & such I expect it to be more difficult. I know there isn't too much on this forum about getting a re-sleeve but I was wondering if anyone has had any personal experiences with this. Wondering if it will be as successful as the 1st was oringally. NOTE: I have made the personal decision not to have the bypass as an alternative. My doctor says that it is the usual revisionj choice but I am even more scared of that surgery!

I’m about 5 days into my 2 week liquid diet. I was not thrilled to do it, but I have to say it’s not too bad. It’s helping me mentally prepare for what life will be after surgery and I’m down 7lbs from my starting weight of 216 before the liquids. I understand it’s mostly water weight but to see the scale move down is motivating for me. Also my sleep quality has been much better. Also, I don’t want to have a 5th incision if not necessary and I want the best possible recovery as I can have. My doctor told me that he has noticed a difference when people do not follow the plan from those who do. But yea every doctor has their own ways of doing things but where I am in the NYC area this seems to be the norm. -
Sleeve with high BMI

You're an inspiration to me. I weigh 390 and am getting the sleeve on May 3rd, and my goal is 200. I wasn't sure if there was anyone who had the sleeve that lost the kind of weight I'm wanting to, since most get the bypass when they have an extremely large amount to lose. You give me so much hope that what I want to do is possible with the sleeve!!! You look fantastic!!! -
Sleeve with high BMI
liveaboard15 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
you defiantly do have a chance of hitting your goal. Just stick to it! Have you talked to a surgeon yet? One surgeon i spoke to would not do gastric sleeve for people over i think it was like 58 BMI. That those with higher BMIs had to loose weight to get below a threashold (for safety issues) But of course every surgeon is different and have their own set of guidlines. I wish you the best of luck! -
Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

OMG I cannot wait for this to happen for me. I have never been the same weight two days in a row (never mind two years in a row) for my entire adult life. I have either been gaining or losing forever. Cannot wait to not have to check every day which one is happening *TO ME*. -
Is there a thread or something where everyone can share before and after pics of their weight loss? I'd love to see the progress being made and cheer everyone on while I wait for my surgery day to get here. It also might be good for all of us who might not see the difference in the mirror to get others opinions, so we can see and hear that we ARE making progress and other people can see it, even if we can't ourselves.

I posted this in another thread, but I thought I would try here too, just in case I might get more/different responses. Here goes: So I'm hoping to hear from anyone with a high BMI that got the sleeve and had a lot of success. My current BMI is 63. My goal weight is 200 pounds, which means I need to lose 190 pounds. For various reasons I chose the sleeve over the bypass, and I know bypass patients lose more than sleeve patients do. BUT...I have no issues following the diet, and once I lose some weight I will start working out again (I did Keto and lost almost 100 pounds over 7 months, but then it just started creeping back up and no matter how much I restricted my carbs and worked out, I couldn't keep the weight down and I got frustrated and quit), but I worry that I won't be able to hit my goal even if I stick to the diet and work out. I have MS, so strengthening my muscles and losing the weight is a must to keep my mobility and reduce the pain. I also desperately want to get rid of my diabetes and high blood pressure. And I'm hoping losing the weight will help my asthma a little. BUT... is this possible with the sleeve? I'm so excited about the surgery, but is it really possible to lose that kind of weight with the sleeve? Has ANYONE on here done it, or even come close? This just has to work. I wasn't always overweight. I used to be a size 6, but when I had my son back in 98, my PCOS jump started and I put on close to 100 pounds and only lost maybe 25. No matter what i did, I couldn't lose it. Then I had my daughter and gained close to the same amount, and was never able to lose any of it. Then I did keto, succeeded for a while, then it failed and I gave up. And now here I am. Do I have any hope at all of hitting my goal weight?

Hello All! I had a Roun Y Revision done on April 5. My original procedure was 23 years ago and over time I gained 100% of my weight back. Since my original was a full open surgery I had a hard time finding the right surgeon to revise me. A lot of research, switching ins plans, and a lot of grace….. I found the Right Doctor. I was in the hospital over night. Walking at midnight with my nurse. Completed over a mile of laps around the nurses station before I came home. Since being home I have only taken Tylenol 3x! I am sipping along my clear liquids and feel really good. I really like Bariatric Advantage shakes with water. I plan to lean in to the support available this time. -

I'm reading a lot about 2 week liquid diet. I was approved for weight loss surgery 3 years ago and even had a surgery date scheduled and mentally was not prepared. I ended up canceling the surgery, and my doctor at the time did this 2 week liquid diet. My doctor this time around did not require that. I'm very thankful for it. I talked to him about it (a very respected surgeon here) and he just finds it's something really hard to invoke on someone who has already made a hard decision. I had a full breakfast the morning before the surgery and then broth for lunch and dinner and surgery the next day. He said if my liver covered part of my stomach (the liquid diet is to shrink your liver) that he would simply put in a 5th laparoscopic hole and insert a device that is used to keep the liver pushed up. Surprised that the liquid diet is so common prior to surgery.... -
The hair loss thing was really only noticeable to me. I knew that more hair was coming out when I brushed and in the shower, but no one else notice. Yes, I did cut my hair (I used to have hair that went to my waist and cut it to brush my shoulders) but the hair cut was because I hadn't cut my hair since I was 15 (I'm 34 and had just turned 34 when I cut it) and I was in desperate need of a cut. I don't have experience with pregnancy at all, but my PCP had weight loss surgery and had two more kids after the fact. With the DS though, it's still best to wait at least 18 months post op to make sure you have your vitamin levels where they're supposed to be because if you get pregnant too soon it can lead to health complications so that's why it's suggested to wait a full 18 months. Also, your taste buds change after surgery so don't get too attached to a certain protein shake because you might not like it post op. The one I bought I liked pre-op, but post-op it was far too sweet. Also, I wanted to share that my doctor never warned me that there is a 3% possibility of developing a wheat allergy or Celiac's Disease post op so I'm warning you that it is a possibility because they didn't tell me it was until I discovered that I have a wheat allergy. So while it's unlikely to happen to you, it would have been nice if I'd known... I still would have done the surgery and it was still one of the best decisions I've ever made for myself, I just wish I'd been prepared for it to be a possibility so that's why I'm sharing that with you. I wish you the best on your surgery journey and I hope that everything works out for you!

I was both a slow loser and a chronic staller. But I still got to my goal weight and even went a little past it. I'm in maintenance now and the only thing I can tell you is to try and not stress about it (which you will still undoubtedly do, because I know I did). -
expected weight loss curve
Spinoza replied to Kelly Sweetheart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are calculators but your body won't know that Kelly! They're based on averages and most people don't stick to those. If you're looking for a ballpark my surgeon said that people lose an average of 60-70% of their *excess* body weight in two years. That's not to say all people though - some do (much) better some do (much) worse. I'm a bit control freaky too so I have had a hard time not being able to predict what will happen from one week or month to the next. But I have learned to trust my sleeve - it's working really well for me. Your body will already have a new set point in mind and once you get there that's it - I believe we either accept that or we fight tooth and nail to lose more to get to OUR ideal (not our BODY'S new ideal) and then fight forever to stay there. And most of us have spent a good part of our lives fighting the same fight and losing. I hope you do really well with your sleeve - you're already doing brilliantly. Stick to the rules and you will lose, there's no way on this earth that you won't. And if you stick to the rules for a long time you will get to your new set weight. How much you will lose and how fast is, unfortunately for you and me, pretty much impossible to say.
