The drs office with Nutritionist and PA VS THERAPIST CONFLICTS
lizonaplane replied to berryboo97's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with listening to the medical personnel. However, ask them WHY they are giving you these directions. Once you have surgery, you need to be aware that "grazing" (unplanned snacking, eating too frequently) can cause you to not loose much or regain your weight, because you're constantly re-filing your stomach as soon as there's room, and usually with not healthy food. Also, most people think exercise burns a lot more calories than it does (most calorie counters are completely wrong on how many calories you will burn and overestimate it), so eating because you've exercised is not always the right response. but... you will never last in your life long journey if you ignore your hunger. I never lost my hunger after surgery and had to eat 5-6 times a day because I could only eat a little at once. I agree that you should tell the doc/pa/nutritionist that not everyone is on the same page! -
I agree with @Sleeve_Me_Alone. It's a tool, but you have to "wield" it properly. It's very easy to eat junk even with the sleeve. I might be extremely full from protein at dinner, but if I decide to eat some cake, cookies, pretzels, etc, it doesn't matter how full I am; those foods just slide right on down. It's still a constant struggle to eat the "right" foods. I am for 80% good foods. The lap band was maybe not a great surgery, and there were lots of complications for many people, but I've also heard that with each successive WLS you have, the success rate (getting to a good weight and keeping it off) goes down. So, lap band to sleeve, then sleeve to bypass, each time you're likely to lose less weigh. Of course... those are just averages. But... it's all a head game, so make sure your head is in the game before you do the surgery.

How long after RNY can you stop reflux meds?
Spinoza replied to mrsjo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Pre-op I had reflux for years but it resolved any time I lost a significant amount of weight. I used to take Ranitidine as required, and more recently Omeprazole. I definitely considered bypass rather than sleeve, and my surgeon talked me through the pros and cons of both, but in the end I gambled on weight loss curing it again, and it has. If he had nudged me towards bypass I would have done that though. My regime is 3 months of PPI after surgery so I'll be stopping it in another week or so. I know or at least strongly suspect I'll be fine without it. -
I am really sorry to hear you so full of regret. It's very common after any life-changing event, and perhaps it's worse with bariatric surgery because we chose it and made happen (and some of us even paid for it). You're grieving for your old best friend - food. Probably unhealthy food at that. I certainly did and I think lots of us hit a point post-op where we think 'what have I done??' Everyone here is giving good advice - especially about seeking professional help from a therapist. I will just say be kind to yourself, give yourself time to recover properly, and then reassess your feelings. Once you start losing significant amounts of weight you may feel way better. I really hope you do. 🙂

Birth control and gastric bypass
ShoppGirl replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I know the men may hate me for this but there is always the option of a vasectomy if it’s a long term choice to not have children. Obviously this wouldn’t be a solution for the OP for just dating but for those who are married reading this, the absorption and weight gain concerns are real and it may be time for the men to step up. At least it’s worth considering. -
🎵 Look at my sig!! I am so happy to be half way to my goal weight. 12 weeks since my op tomorrow and in that time I've lost 33lbs. I know it's likely to slow down, and I've had one stall of almost 3 weeks already but I am so amazed by how well this surgery has gone for me. I used to read about you all losing or having lost stones and stones and never really thought it would be me. Part of me still doesn't believe it! I was always hoping I would reach my goal by a year post op and I really think I can do it now. Huge thanks to all of you who have shared your knowledge and experience and helped me this far. I'll stop now - it's beginning to feel like a bad Oscars acceptance speech. 🤣

I had surgery after I'd already gone through menopause, so I have no experience with this - or at least post-surgical experience, but I'd be careful with things like implants and Depo-Provera (the shot). Both are notorious for weight gain. I don't know if that's true after surgery, too, but... -

Welcome! I'm glad you are doing ok! You're just a little over a week out already! I see you've lost 20 lbs, that's amazing! I struggle with my water intake as well. I've never liked water....NEVER....but it's super important that we get at the minimum 48 oz of fluids daily. What helps me is I line up my bottles of water, and I know I have to drink all of them by end of day. So I make it like a competition with myself. I drink the Essentia water, it's the only water I can stomach. Good Luck to you! I can't wait to celebrate your weight loss success! ♥ -
The drs office with Nutritionist and PA VS THERAPIST CONFLICTS
Guest replied to berryboo97's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL, yes. It's not a bug, but a feature ... in a way. The medical side of things look at your physical structure. The psychologist understands how obesity impacts you mentally, socially, and devises (if they're good) a way for you to accept yourself and work positively towards change. I've enjoyed both sides once I became my own (and honest) patient advocate. My therapist is right that our worth really isn't determined by our weights; that we should eat until we're not hungry regardless of weight, and that the biggest gift you'll give yourself is making peace with the negative self-image. The medical team is right there's a diet that works with surgery. That being said: it's becoming increasingly settled science that going hungry - as in hungry-hungry, not 'mmh I'd like some ice cream' - has profound hormonal, mental, physically negative effects. You should not go hungry. And that's where you as your own patient advocate comes in. ----- EDIT: I'm sorry, I'm an idiot. And so is your psych! I'll leave the above for general thought sharing, though. I thought the psych said eat and the medical team said don't eat. . Your medical team has it right here, and that's the same position your psych should take. I bet they're just telling you that because they don't want to give you advice that extends beyond their field of expertise (that being said, "hunger" as a state of being should be part of a bariatric psychologist's field of knowledge). -
The drs office with Nutritionist and PA VS THERAPIST CONFLICTS

Psychologist involves the mind... They Typically have no training or education on nutrition... Especially a nutritionist who specializes in weight loss surgery. -
My insurance wont cover anything either so i am self pay. I am going for the sleeve. Just waiting on preop crap. as long as you stick to it and do your part, You will be successful with a sleeve. What made me go with the sleeve was all the videos i watched on youtube on all the different weight loss surgeries. as someone already mentioned, Mexico is a option if you want it done cheap... If i was gonna go that route i would want to get it done at Endobariatrics. They only do sleeves. But there are others. last i saw they were around the 10 grand mark. My Sleeve i am paying for here in Florida is costing around $18-19K

Any WLS will work if you learn to use it properly. Obviously, the lap-band had some inherent issues, so I'm NOT AT ALL blaming you for the regain there. But as far as surgical WLS options go, they are guaranteed to create a calorie deficit to induce weight loss. BUT - and its a big but - you have to be ready and willing to commit to the life long changes necessary to be truly successful. I am almost 5 months post-op and have lost nearly 70lbs. I'm VERY happy with my progress so far, but its not easy. Every single day I have to hit my protein, drink my fluids, take my vitamins, move my body and make a million other decisions to prioritize my health and stay on track. That being said, I would do it again in a heartbeat. My only regret is not having done it sooner. I also went the self-pay route via Mexico and was 100% satisfied with the experience. Ultimately, only YOU can decide what's right for YOU. Do your homework, really dig in to learn what it would entail for you, and then decide.

My highest weight was 327lbs Starting weight: 308 the day of surgery Current weight: 139lbs Date of surgery 5/2/17 almost 5 years out and I've had 2 pregnancies since having surgery. My doctor given goal weight was 170lbs -
Hi everyone! I had a lapband in 2012, and have gained everything back plus...... So I have some questions and need some info- would a revision to a gastric sleeve be successful (of course I have to do my part). My insurance does not cover anything, unfortunately, so it will be pricy if I decide to do it.....please just give me some pros and cons and things to consider......thank you so much!

Hi Everyone! I had my surgery for my sleeve on 1/31. Had my one week post op yesterday and doctor was pleased with healing so far. I had only been having chicken broth and protein shakes since surgery and he wanted me to move on to full liquids for a day or two and then pureed foods. My first meal of cream soup was suprising to me. 4 spoonfuls in and I was full. I was SO looking forward to having something with some flavor and then only 4 spoonfuls in and I couldn't eat anymore! LOL. I have one incision that is still really really sore and my surgeon says that is completely normal as thats the incision he inserts the stapler in and also pulls the stomach out of. I'm looking forward to this change and starting this new life! Starting weight: 248 Surgery weight: 238 Current weight: 220 Heather -
Birth control and gastric bypass
lizonaplane replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had sleeve not bypass, and I don't have sex because I'm not interested in it, but I know that you will likely be much more fertile after surgery, even if you don't get your period for a while. I haven't heard of birth control pills not working, but you will have to be really careful to take them EVERY SINGLE DAY. I know a lot of people on here have used IUDs and really like it. I personally would hesitate to get the implants because they can cause weight gain in some people. I would ask your surgeon. -
I think you may be in the intial period of the surgery and it takes time to get adjusted to a new lifestyle. Yes you won't be able to binge or have big portion of food like you used to but post-Op your portion sizes do increase. I also have PCOS and have dealt with and even now dealing with it's horrendous side effects. Hirutism, acne, no periods, weight gain, dark patches, skin tags, metabolic syndrome, high BP and HR (but never took meds for it) anxiety, depression you name it and I have/had it. I'll anyday take this surgery over having to deal with plethora of PCOS related symptoms. My acne has gotten better, blood pressure and HR have normalized so far. No periods still. But I am sure as I continue to lose, some of these side effects will minimize. There's no guarantee, but I am sure I am on a better boat post-Op. My cravings and binge eating have also gotten better, which was never the case post tons of diet plans. This surgery is definitely a boon for many. But it takes time, patience, work and sacrificing of certain elements. Like many suggested, try therapist and see that may help or give it couple of months of adjustment. Good luck.

ESG @ Mexico Bariatric Center
DaisyAndSunshine replied to Liline40's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
I am not sure how much weight you're planning to lose but with ESG weightloss is slower and not as much, about 15 to 20%, which isn't a lot especially for majority of us who fall under Obese category. So depends on your BMI and the goal you have in mind. As for scars, laproscopic scarring is minimal and after a year or so, you won't even notice (I am sure many veterans here can vouch for it). Regardless of what you choose, good luck with your journey. -

I am right there with you! Originally scheduled for 1/20, but postponed due to covid patients. I just found out on Friday that I am scheduled for 3/1. During the 4 weeks of not knowing what was going on, I was ready to throw in the towel. Thankfully I have maintained my weight. but need to restart the liver shrink diet ASAP! -
Have you had bariatric surgery? If so when, and what type? Can you fill in the stats in your profile - that can help other people see what stage you are at. Good luck with your weight loss journey anyway - however far along you are. 🤩
