    My New Life & Dating?

I've been told I'm a cheap date lol Has anyone tried drinking with the sleeve? I hear alcohol poisoning is a big concern??
  2. My surgery has been cancelled and rescheduled 3 times in 2 months, so so frustrating! The Dr always wants 1 more test, which is fine, but on 9-17-12 I went in for my pre-op only to have it cancelled again. Now the Dr says im high risk and wants to do my surgery in a hosp that has an ICU. I have cirrhosis due to fatty liver, no alcohol, drugs in my life. I'm curious to see if anyone else out there has liver disease and had this surgery? The main reason I'm having GPS is for my liver, diabetes , my gastro highly recommended surgery to stop the liver damage and possibly reverse damage that is there. I wasn't nervous or scared until the other day when words like high risk and ICU were used. I appreciate any comments or peace of mind. Marta
  3. What are they????
  4. I am thrilled with my results, but I have also put the work needed into it. I work out regularly and watch what I eat. I dont let one slip up ruin the rest of my day/week. I also know that I am human and I'm going to allow myself a bowl of ice cream if thats what I want. If I'm out with friends, I am going to have a glass or two of alcohol.

    Quick Question

It's because caffeine dehydrates you (as does alcohol of course) and with a limited intake of fluids and foods, you need to use everything you're taking in hydration wise.
  6. We share a birthday!!! I will be sleeved by then, so ni food or alcohol based celebrations for me either. Congrats on getting a date. It's exciting to know that the day after your birthday you are starting a new life. You will in a sense be reborn!
  7. Our plan will cover drug and alcohol counseling and treatment, but not food addiction. So if I became an alcoholic and fried my liver (self-inflicted) I would have coverage to attempt to regain my health, but nothing for nutrition counseling, medically supervised diets or stronger methods if those fail. Just really smacks a bit...hard!

What's On The Menu? Let's Share...

Reminder that i am 3 + years out . . . . . B = 1 small bean and cheese taco L = 3/4 c dahl (split peas and curry) with 1 small flour roti (like tortilla) D = probably lean cusine Snacks = small apple, fruit roll up Will probably have a alcoholic drink after dinner as well.
  9. I think that it would be nice to see a movement toward preventative care. We get so focused on curing people that we forget that we could avoid a number of diseases and ailments by pushing more preventative care. There is some movement toward it, but in the long run we could save ourselves far more money by preventing the disease in the first place. My surgery cost my insurance company about $20,000, but to pay for doctor visits, surgeries/amputations for necrotic ulcers due to noncompliance, hospitalizations, medications, etc for if I got diabetes would far outweigh the cost of surgery. But type 2 diabetes is preventable in a lot of people - does that mean that it should still be under the uncontrollable category? Or alcoholism? The list could really go on and on of self-inflicted ailments that are considered necessary by insurance. Personally, I don't feel that this is all that much different. Some of us are addicted to food, some of us have mobility limitations, etc. It may start out as something that is elective, but obesity is a large risk factor in an endless number of diseases. I do agree that that's how insurance companies see things like this nowadays, but I hope in the future we can see a change to them covering more preventative care - not just weight loss surgery, but other measures that help keep people healthy. OP: I would try to see if your HR has any kind of appeals process. The worst that they can do is come back and say no. I know that I - along with probably a number of people on this board - would be very interested to see the process and the results if you do. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Alcohol Is Empty Calories I Know.

I've never heard of a carbonated margarita. I stick to wine myself since in small quantities it has a few health benefits. I'm careful to limit my intake of empty calories without totally depriving myself. You have to be careful because alcohol can very easily sabotage weight loss, not just with its empty calories, but also with inhibitions to eat anything and everything!
  11. But if I want to have a night of drinking what can I drink that isnt carbonated besides wine and hard liquors mixed with juice? At the store I wanted a bottle of margatitas but got scared its carbonated.
  12. My marriage fell apart post sleeve, but not due to my Weightloss. I had enough of his alcoholic ways, and me and my 5 year old moved out on labor day. I'm sorry but when you break your nose and receive a concussion but dont remember how it happened, you've got a problem. We've been married since last October, and his "problem" started surfacing in January of this year. I had enough. Not the role model I want for my son. Maybe I have more confidence because of my weight loss. I'm sure he'll tell all his friends it's because I lost 63lbs, not because he's a drunk. But I don't care.

    What Food Do You Miss?

Notime, I was a HUGE carboholic. I lived on starches. I truely believe I was addicted to them....like a meth addict. I could not go 2-3 hours without some carbs or sugar. If I did, my body reacted violently. I didn't like that reaction, so I subconsciously trained myself to eat before it could kick in. I was like a fuctioning alcoholic. I did everything I wanted to do, but I made sure the carbs were always close by. When I first met my surgeon I told him how concerned I was about this, and that I didn't think I could kick the addiction. He told me by the time I was allowed to eat again, it would be gone. My NUT drilled it into me how bad those starches were, but it never really sunk in until I learned about and understood the chemical reaction that eating those carbs and sugars had inside my body. Now I'm repulsed by it and don't want to go back. I anyone is interested, watch the movie "Fathead". It's mostly a criticism of the movie "Supersize Me", but right in the middle it gives a real good explanation of what happens when you eat high glycemic foods. It's basically a lose/lose situation.

    Protein Shake Recipe Website

I have the sugar free chocolate syrup, have to check on the peppermint one...OMG, I just read the back of the peppermint extract, to see about calories, and it says it's 91% alcohol..Good thing I only used 1 tsp.
  15. Many people find that the sleeve has a shockingly-sudden positive effect on almost every aspect of your health. The doctors cannot even explain all of it, but your blood pressure, blood sugars, lipids, and liver enzymes all get really good really fast. No to mention things like sleep apnea and so on. With your fragile health, it seems pretty likely you will see a lot of big benefits. Also keep in mind that people who have problems post a lot more than people that don't. Most sail through this procedure effortlessly. I am one of those. It was absolutely not a big deal. Minnimal pain, and a few weeks of restricted diet. I am 9 weeks post op and living a pretty normal life (67 lbs lghter). I love food. I love to cook and I love eating with people. I can eat almost anything in small quantities. Since the surgery I have eaten stingray, and satay on the back streets of Singapore. At home I have eaten Creole, Sushi, Italian, Tapas and more. In the next 6 weeks I will be eating in Spain, London, Jordan, Chile, and Panama. I plan to eat well. I can't eat the carbs for a while, but I get in everything else. I am holding off on the alcohol, but I might get just a little of that in while I hang out in my favorite underground blues club in London. The sleeve doesn't control your life, you do. Make your decision on the facts, and then make your new life the way you want it to be. It is all about taking control of those voices in your head and moving on with your life. You will be OK.
  16. I knew this was going to work. There wasn't any Doubt because I wanted it that badly!! I didn't tell people at work until the first hundred lbs was gone and someone asked how I did it. But personal friends knew beforehand... Hubby was so excited for me I think he blabbed first...and then it was over the holidays so they all saw me not drinking alcohol or eating munching at parties so I just embraced it. And now they all cannot get over the difference.

    Drinking With Meals.

I agree with the drinking with a meal once in awhile rule.... As long as it does not become a habit for you I say go and enjoy I would just be careful with the alcohol because of carbs and also if you don't know if you will really be effected by the alcohol...e I really feel it from a couple sips but I'm not a drinker.
  18. I don't want to say I didn't love food when I was a little kid, but the truth is that I was horribly picky. Like, sit at the table all night because I didn't want to eat my spinach, pea's in the couch cushions, slipped it to the dog when Mom wasn't looking kind of picky. Yeah, I usually sat at the table for hours every single night... so, to top it all off I was stubborn. Picky and stubborn eater. That is a bad combination. Now add to that immune compromised, with an extreme fear of needles, which I had to face every single week with injections, and it's no wonder food became my best friend. Especially milk with a little sugar or Molasses in it, which the Dr told my Mom to give me to get all my medicines down. (Thanks for that, you maniac.) Anyway - fast forward to present. I'm an adult. For years I have been saying, "grow up" "take responsibility for your fat butt" "watch what you're eating" - well, I've been watching alright, watch as I stuff it in my face that is. Oy... so a process of failure, hope, failure, willpower, weakness, hope, failure... you know the routine, anyone who is struggling knows this routine. But now I'm facing down the barrel of a gun called obesity and a surgical decision to save my life, and I'm saying to myself, "how the HELL did I get here"? Most of my friends, people that REALLY know me say that I don't act like an obese person. I don't really know what that means, and I've tried to get someone to explain that to me, and the only response that seemed honest was that I just seemed to not relate to my weight. To me that sounds like I'm in some advanced state of denial. Maybe I just didn't see my fat, because I wasn't paying attention to it. I have lead a pretty dramatic life - my Mom died when I was 11 and my Dad was an alcoholic, not a mean one, but addicted nontheless... so I was used to making excuses for why he drank. I could blame it on my Mom dying, but he drank before that, too. Actually, he lost me while trick-or-treating when I was 4 because he and his best pal were lit when they took a bunch of us out trick-or-treating. I will never forget the sound of my Mom's voice when the lady who's house I ended up at, took my home. My Dad caught holy hell, to boot. I remember thinking that no one could protect me like my Momma! Anyway, I'm getting off point. I guess I'm just trying to figure out how I got here. I don't want an excuse - I'm just looking for MY reason. And in the meantime, I'm getting ready to meet with several different surgeons. Thanks for reading.

    Alcohol?

I am not sure if this counts, but I had 10% alcohol NyQuil for 4 nights last week when dealing with a cold. It helped me sleep, but I was wondering if I should have had the non-alcohol version instead. It did help me sleep.

    Alcohol?

I've had a few sips of alcohol at about 6 months. My NUT had told us stories about patients that drank alcohol and died. I also must say that the class was geared towards the GBS. So I tend to stay on the safe side.

    Alcohol?

Has anyone started drinking after surgery? If so, how long did you wait? Sent from my iPhone using VST
  22. I use stevia for sweetener, it's all natural. I have vanilla and chocolate and original for my shakes and I'm going to order the stevia drinks also. I stopped the crystal light because it is so bad for u and can stall weightloss. Totally different than hard candy but I wanted to add that in there because hard candy even if it's sugar free really is worst for u because of the sugar alcohols and carbs, and everything else lol.

    Psychologist Appointment

They want to be sure you are of sound mind, know the consequences of your actions. That you are not a binger, abuse alcohol, etc. and need other psych help before getting a major life changing surgery. Most likely whatever eating issues you have all banders have had so don't worry about it. Be honest.

    How Do I Survive?

Not gonna lie, it will be tough, but keep your eye on the prize. You have done so well, you are so close. Think to yourself, is it really worth it this time. You will be able to go out again, and even have a drink, but you can get through it this one time. Especially alcohol so close to surgery. Alcohol thins the blood. I remember when I got my tattoo, they would not work on me if I had been drinking because you will bleed way too much! Keep that in mind. The best thing to do is leave if it is getting too hard. If your friends know, they will understand, especially if you leave before everyone else has had a little too much! If not, use not feeling good or something like that. You can do it. You obviously have a lot of will power and determination!

    Drinking

My surgeon said no alcohol for a year. I am fine with that. The way I see it, we put our body through so much to get healthy. Why would we add a toxin in that will tax it even more? Especially our livers. It's just not worth it to me.
