  1. I am feeling the same you are! I was banded July 30th and have lost 40lbs..I have had 2 fills and my third is scheduled for Nov 30th on my 4mnth anniversary. Right now I have VERY little restriction. I can eat normal and never had any issues with eating anything, pbing, sliming or getting stuck. I am very frustrated. I have been going to the gym 4x a week taking 2 hour long classes back to back. I hvn't lost any weight in several weeks. Now, I have to admit a day here or there I have eat things I shouldnt have or eat alot more than I should have but I cannot wait to have restriction!! I know that will make the difference in my weight loss and help me out. I too fee like Iv lost about just as much weight as I did when I was on Weight watchers....people do keep telling me I will get there and it will get easier once I have good restriction but it just seems like its taking so much longer than I expected to get to that point. I think to answer your ultimate question, once you have good restriction the point is you will more than likely keep it off unlike all the times we have dieted in the past. Not to mention if you dont really have restriction its easier to fall off the wagon and eat alot more than you should or can! Hang on girlfriend..your not alone!

    Weight fluctuation

WOW, girl you are doing so well! I started out at like your weight, I have off 52# so far and had my surgery June 7th. 2010 and am so looking forward to having pictures as great as your's Keep up the good work!
  4. I told some people at work that I am having VSG. Was that a mistake??? I see a lot of people say they didn't tell their co-workers or employers what they were having. I only told a select few but gossip in my office spreads like wild fire!!!! I started not to tell anyone but I am really close with some co-workers and some others over heard. I ended up telling my manager because she was expecting me to leave my job at the end of March due to me completing nursing school, but since I have insurance now, I am holding off seeking a nursing position. My job is in the medical field and I have had a few co-workers who had weight loss surgery so no one really looks at having surgery as a "bad thing" and they are not judgmental, not to my face anyway.

  6. My doctor told me I had to take this medication called Actigall starting 3 months post op and I would take it for 6 months twice a day. The purpose apparently is to keep you from developing gallstones which can result from rapid weight loss. So I compliantly took the medication only to start suffering severe joint and muscle pain. I called my PCP who said this is a MAJOR side effect and to stop the medication immediately. Apparently this side effect is the medication not being absorbed through the liver like it should be and is being absorbed into the muscle/tissue which can cause permanent muscle damage. Now, if anyone has followed any of my other posts you know I have had NOTHING but bad luck and issue after issue. When this happened I actually started to laugh because it would just figure I would suffer a major side effect from medication that is supposed to help you. Just wondering if anyone else was instructed to take this medication. Obviously, I am no longer taking it. I would rather take my chances of developing gall stones...which at this point....would not be far fetched given everything else I have had happen!

1 week out and doing fine.

Wednesday I will be three weeks post op, and I am doing great. No problems what so ever! So far I LOVE LOVE LOVE my band....I have steadily been losing weight and that is my goal. I have not had any problems with foods so far, and I hope that it stays that way! I can eat a lot more than I thought I could eat, but it is still not even a fourth of what I used to eat. So all is good!!! Have a great holiday, and keep staying positive !!!

I do better when I record what I eat. It makes me accountable. Don't be discouraged! It takes time, not all of us lose or gain the same.

    What's wrong with our Society?

I dunno that I agree with you, TommyO. I do think that to some extent weight is a class and money issue. Money and education often do mean that people make healthier lifestyle choices. They can afford to go to gyms. They can afford to buy better quality foods and are more likely to cook using fresh produce. They are more likely to read the nutritional info on prepared food items. But money alone plays a huge role; it is much cheaper to feed your family on macaroni and cheese and hotdogs than it is to feed them chicken breast and salad. And a loaf of white bread costs a lot less than a loaf of 7 grain whole wheat. And the more affluent and better educated do receive more social pressure from their friends to be thin. Let me explain this last statement: whenever I visit those temples of culture - museums and art galleries - I rarely see truly large people. I do, however, occasionally see them in my local Walmart and Zellers.

    Being banded 12/9/08

Hi there, The nerves and doubts are perfectly normal. You are about to take a really big step towards changing your life and any change can be stressful. But, it is worth it. Your weight loss journey will transform your life in so many ways. Stay focussed on that and try to remain positive. The band will prompt you to make changes to your lifestyle and eating habits. It will not do it by itself. I'm sure you know that. This is a great week for you. Go for it!

    Hello all!

Tony - I was banded two weeks ago, and found SO much comfort, information and help on this site; just before surgery, and since. I contemplated WLS for close to a year before actually moving forward. The two I looked closely at was the gastric bypass and the lap band. I teeter tottered back & forth between the two for a long time. I was scheduled for the bypass, then freaked out about 10 days prior. In between that and my decision to go with the band (plus plication), I gave dieting one more good try. That was about a two week period, and I managed to gain three more pounds. Congrats on your decision! I'm on my path, and soon you will be, too. It's a lot of work, but even this early on, I'm finding my new "tool" is quickly becoming my new best friend

    Hello all!

Hello all! I've been addicted to this community ever since I started researching the lap-band. This site along with a few others have been very helpful in aiding my decision to have the Surgery. I find great comfort on this site as it provides a place for me to interact with others that are in a similar situation as myself. After years and years of contemplating the band and repeatedly giving dieting "one last GOOD try", I've come to the realization that I need another tool to help me achieve my weight loss goals and I believe that the lap band is that tool. I look forward to sharing my journey with all of you and perhaps pay forward some of the encouragement that I received through everyone's posts. Tony
  14. I am in the medical profession, and was banded on Sept 18th. I have lost 20 pounds so far...You have to go into this surgery with the right mental attitude towards food and life. This is a LIFESTYLE CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not an easy fix...if you cant get your mind around the fact that you will have to change your eating habits, and exercise then this will not work for you. The band is a TOOL, its not going to make you lose weight, its a tool to assist in your weight loss. If you want to lose weight and not really do much work, then the band is not for you...maybe the bypass is a better option. Your family is not educated on what the band is, or does by what you wrote. You are not going to have mental distress because you can't eat a normal size plate of spagetti. You can eat most foods, depending on the person. Me personally have a hard time eating white starches because they get stuck, and its uncomfortable, so I dont do it..I guess if I really wanted them I could suffer through the pain but its not worth it, and I dont miss it! This is something that you have to do when you are mentally ready to do so. If you are not a decision maker, then you need to talk with a professional about how to make a life altering decision that is for your health. NO one can make this decision for you. I LOVE MY BAND...and I can honestly say this is the best thing I have done for myself. I eat pretty much what I want, just smaller portions..I dont deprive myself, but the band does not allow me to overeat. You wont be able to eat 5 Cookies and a bag of chips...Im good to get 1 or 2 cookies down on an empty stomach. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck, and do whats best for you! Shauna
  15. I don't think I can answer all of your questions, because it's true - the motivation has to come from within you. With that being said, I had the band surgery almost two weeks ago and have to say that for me, it has made a big difference in the hunger I feel, and therefore makes it much easier to say no to food that my family is eating around me. While they are not eating food that is bad for them, I still do not personally feel the need to grab a bite of whatever they're having. The Protein shakes keep me full enough. I did try the Protein shake diet before surgery, and was successful with that as well, but I did feel more hunger. Every case is different; there are some folks who have been banded that do feel hungry after the surgery (affectionately known as "Bandster Hell") - until you get to that "sweet spot" where you no longer are driven by physical hunger to overeat or eat too fast. Of course I'm not there, as I haven't had a fill yet. But I don't feel as hungry as I used to, as often, either. The band is a tool that will enable you to resist eating more than you should because of physical hunger. Your family is right, though, about the "head hunger," or what makes you eat whether you're hungry or not. So it's really a combnation of a very effective tool if you work it, and your own motivation to keep working it. No one is perfect and follows the plan exactly, but the point is that it sure makes it easier to get back on track if you get off track. At least that's what I've been able to gain from reading the posts here. The bottom line for me was discovering what motivated me to eat, handling the hunger, and at my age trying to make the rest of my body healthy to live long enough to enjoy maybe another 30 years or so. My own personal motivation is the high blood pressure I suddenly developed, as well as wanting to be able to do things I can't do now. But your own motivation has to come from within yourself, not your family. You CAN do it, and the Lap Band IS an effective tool. It's not magic, it won't do the work for you, but it sure will make it a lot easier. Good luck in whatever you decide to do...this board is a great support for you too, and most people are more than willing to help wherever they can.

    July 17 band to sleeve

I am so glad my friend told me about this site!! Thanks for the feedback. It's great to know "I'm not alone". I am soooo glad to have that band out of me. I was miserable with it. Couldn't keep anything down until they realized it slipped. Then had all the Fluid removed from it until I could get in on the 17 for my sleeve. I'm sure my buyers remorse will fade as my weight starts to drop. I am really looking forward to the soft solids stage. I'm starving!!! As far as the bathroom goes, it's standard procedure to give a suppository on the 2nd day post op prior to discharge so I went once at the hospital and once when I got home yesterday. I am going to start a stool softener just because I'm soo scared to poop!!
  17. Hi Melissa How much do they want you to lose? This isn't your pre op diet is it - this is just weight they want you to shift I presume? Ultimately it does seem a little harsh as your not far off what I was before surgery - is this insurance paid? I would sit down and write down all the reasons why you want the surgery..... go deep in to your heart - and stick that on the fridge to help you each time you head for food.... list all the positives that will come out of the operation for you. Find your largest photo possible and add that in too...... The only person you are cheating is yourself - to have come this far and not get the surgery would be such a shame. It does take strength, but it'll be the last 'normal' diet you do, and if you think its hard now then when they give you your pre op diet thats gonna be a lot worse - so maybe its also a test to see how you do on this to see if you'll stick to the pre op too - which is SO important. Good luck
  18. Some people do one week pre op diet, some do more. Not sticking to the pre op diet can be a way of risking surgery altogether as if you don't shrink your liver some surgeons refuse to operate. Others ask you to lose before you start the pre op to get you in the right frame of mind, cutting down portions as you'll have to cut them down afterwards bigtime with no choice at all. I did Weight watchers for 7 months before my surgery and lost 21lbs easily within about 6 weeks - but you have to want to do it. You'll still be able to eat everything after surgery so forget the goodbye food parties and get exercising to shift a bit more thru cardio. You might be able to lose some before your next appointment but I just hope its enough that he says he'll go ahead with it for you.
  19. I had my sleeve done on 11/7/16 pre op weight 344 ish cw 305, since the surgery I have had major major health issues. Malignant melanoma, anaphylaxis, heart attack, now diagnosed with stage 3-4 cirrhosis. I have not lost any weight for past 4 months. My anxiety is getting the best of me with each crisis. I am grazing I need to stop!! I am just overwhelmed. I never drank, I feel like I am a failure with the weightloss. I need to cope better! Any suggestions?

Having trouble need advice Nov 16 sleever

I am so sorry to hear of all that you are going through. First off, I need you to do the most important thing, forgive yourself and move on. If you feel like you are a failure you will be more likely to wallow and graze more. You have to just stand up, accept the bad eating and grazing of the past, dust yourself off and start again. I have had to do this many times. I was sleeved on 5/29/16 and am down 260 since surgery and 291 overall. I just had a bout of a few weeks after having my panniculectomy surgery and some stressful times where I was eating really bad. I was giving in to my cravings and not counting my calories. Maybe not everyone will slip but many people do. I feel the difference between those who regain their focus and those who don't is forgiving themselves. I came to the realization that I was self sabotaging myself, and even though I gained less than a pound I was on the path of regain. I just had to sit down with myself and say, I am not going back. I have come too far to ruin this now. I will never be that person again. Then I did some meal planning. I started weighing everything again and have tracked everything that goes in my mouth. I am keeping to a 1,200 calorie a day limit because that is what my surgeon recommends. I know this is hard, and you have had a lot of stressors in your life that would test even the strongest will power. You can come back from this, just take it one day at a time. If that's too much just one meal at a time. You can't change the past but you control the future. We are all here if you need us to vent to people who would understand or if you are looking for suggestions!

    Gained Weight

Good for you for reacting quickly to a minor gain!! Compared to what you have presumably lost, losing five pounds is nothing. Are you maintaining a food log? If not, now is a great time to start. My Fitness Pal highly recommended if you don't have an app already. Set your app for losing a pound a week with the associated calorie goal. Follow your plan for a week and see what happens with your weight. If you lose, great. If you gain or stay the same, reduce your calorie goal by 100-200 calories a day. Follow your plan for a week and see what happens with your weight. You'll quickly be able to determine the calorie goal you need to maintain to lose the five pounds. It's easy and it works like a charm!!

    Gained Weight

Great job catching it so soon! My dietician has a great way for us to monitor our weight once in maintenance. A 1-3 pound up or down is considered a 'green' light meaning it could be a normal fluctuation. 3-5 pounds up is considered a 'yellow' light meaning slow down and assess what you need to change you're headed in the wrong direction. Anything more than 5 lbs gained is 'red'. Stop immediately. Start logging food and Water intake if not doing so already. Call and make a dietician appt. If you have gained but food and water choices are good. The important thing is to catch it fast. I for one go into ostrich mode when gaining weight. I bury my head and then 40 or 50 lbs later try and change. After my rny I vowed I'd never play that game again.

    Stress Management Solutions-- Part Two

Sometimes, there are solutions to stress right under your nose. Just a day before my DH called to tell me he'd lost his job, I signed up for a "Learn to Quilt" class from the local quilting guild. At first, going to classes when my DH was home with no job seemed frivolous and even selfish. However, I've found a certain peace and satisfaction in this art form. Funny thing is, it ties in with my losing weight. Last summer, while I waited to visit the surgeon and jumped through all the hoops like a circus poodle, I was also humiliated to find myself making clothes in a size larger than the pattern companies made. I had to "size up" from their largest, creating a pair of pants that were grotesquely huge. In despair, I never finished those pants. I was too mortified. The other day, I found those pants buried under the piles of cloth I made teddy bears out of for my grandchildren. I laughed and cut those pants into 6" charm squares for a quilt. Then I looked at my closet door. Hmmm! I have clothes in there that cannot be re-tailored down, but the memories of the "fat girl" events they represent should never be forgotten. I now have a pile of clothes to be cut down into a memory quilt of charm squares and black rails, since many of those clothes were black (or matched black) because I honestly believed black was slimming. No, I just looked like a black beach ball. I'll finish the pretty new blue quilt I'm learning on within the month. Then, I think I'll start on my memory quilt. Maybe I'll use it as a visual aid when I write "No Fat Chicks" this fall. Lena

    I hope I just need a fill

Dreamsize!!! Hi sweetie! I just now found this post and I'm so glad you posted! We were just talking about all the April Avengers that are MIA!! LOL I'm sorry you feel sad. I know what you mean. I'm losing my hair too. I thought I'd escaped it, but alas...I had not. I am being diligent about taking my Vitamins ( I kind of got out of the habit) and I'm just gonna have to muddle through it. It won't last forever, so we know it will end soon. I was feeling down too there for a while. I had a fill that's been too tight and I just couldn't seem to adjust to it. I'm doing much better once I just finally succumbed to only eating 4 bites of something. I think I just couldn't go with it. Now it's better. Not great, but better. I could probably still use an unfill while I adjust, but I think it's been long enough now that there's no use. I am SO PROUD of you and JEALOUS! You've done a great job losing that much weight and all without a fill!!!! Amazing! You really should be so proud of yourself. That is quite an accomplishment. It sounds like you could definitely benefit from a fill and will do great I'm sure. I've read lots of threads about this depression thing creeping on people and taking over for a little while, but it sounds like it disappears pretty quickly too. I hope for sure that's the case for you too, but I'm glad you're seeing a doctor. PM me too if you want to vent, chat or cry. We are here for you! ~Carol
