    September surgery buddies!!

Hey September buddies! You guys will do great! I got a Sleeve to Bypass conversion on August 29th. I was super stressed out about the 2 week liquid diet but it went by super fast after the 4th day. The 4th day was the worse hunger pain.

Is this it? Is my body done?

Losing so slowly this close to your goal isn’t uncommon. It took me weeks to lose the last kg - so close yet so far. So you may lose more weight just incredibly slowly. But there’s nothing wrong if you don’t. Don’t rely on BMI for what your weight ‘should’ be. It should only be considered as a guide. It doesn’t take into account factors like age, muscle mass, skeletal frame, general health, etc. To lose additional weight, you will have to reduce your calories & you said you struggle with hunger if you do eat less than you are now. But not onot will you have to reduce your caloric intake to lose more weight you will also need to continue to eat less to maintain at the lower weight. Yes, increasing your activity can help though exercise accounts for about 10% of the weight you have to lose. So if you want to lose about 20lbs that’s 2lbs. If this is the weight your body is happiest at, your new set point, to go lower will take constant effort to be able to maintain the lower weight. It was one of the factors behind why we struggled to lose in the past & would always quite easily regain as our set point was at that higher weight. You’ve done so well regardless of whether you lose more weight. You said you feel much better, are healthier, have more energy, are more confident. Embrace those wins, not the number on the scale.

    Extreme tiredness

It could be that you are dumping. Do you feel anything else? Light-headed? sweaty? I used to feel the same after eating food that is high in carbs (bread, rice, pasta etc) which I was taking once a week or just eating too quickly. What worked for me is eating smaller portions and taking my time to chew my food. I drink water at least half an hour after the last portion. I hope this helps.

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm sorry you have to deal with that on top of surgery as well! My periods have become irregular as I have gotten older, so you are now living my fear. With caffeine I had a headache for 3 days when I gave it up, with my keto diets in the past I never got headaches but I heard the keto flu is common and ranges in duration. Whatever it is though, I hope it passes soon. The diet is bad enough without adding pain to the mix. Oh no!! I'm so sorry! That really is horrible to get that close and have to start over. Hugs!
  7. Hey loves :1007_hearts:

I had my sleeve conversion to a bypass on August 29th and that week went by super fast! I was focusing on liquids as well as getting the house in order. We have my aunts wedding coming up so we've been busy planning that as well.

The day before my surgery we had a big sweet sixteen birthday for my cousin and the food that was served was a devil! I passed it like it was nothing. Big thanks to my fiance for sticking with me on the liquid diet.

OK so day of surgery my check in time was 9:30 AM. I got called in to do all the pre-work and then wheeled to the OR at 11:30 AM. When I tell you Mayo is the best place for medical care, it is THE BEST! I was in surgery for 4 hours and stayed in the recovery room for 2 hours. I was soooo worried about my fiance but thanks to the tracking of each patient he was able to track me. It took forever for them to find me a room, which was around 7:00 PM. They actually put me on the respiratory floor. My pain was horrible!! My belly area hurt so bad! It took awhile for the nurses to  accommodate to what I needed because they weren't use to bariatric patients on their floor. The nurse I had was sooooo sweet. I will never forget her! She asked if I can stay another night LOL. My fiance actually couldn't stay the night with me....so he stayed with me for maybe an hour and half and drove off to care for our 3 dogs. I slept maybe until midnight and started to get uncomfortable. That is when I started to walk around the hall. I still had the catheter and the IV hooked up. Got maybe 3 heparin shots. My gas pains were horrible the whole night..I was scared to push anything out.  My fiance arrived around 8 AM and I had my first diluted juice. My surgeon came to visit and said everything was perfect and I was such a perfect candidate for my situation. He is very excited to see the future of my bypass LOL.

I was able to drink 1/2 a liter and was finally discharged around 2:30 PM. The drive home was long because we had to stop at the pharmacy for my pain meds. It was about an hour and 20 minute drive.

Here I am today 5 day post-op, was able to walk around the store but did get some belly pains. Had some miso soup which was delicious.

    August surgery buddies!

That sounds good. I tried greek yogurt, twice, but even though it was lactose free (i'm lactose intolerant) it didn't agree with me. Im fact, it didn't agree with me so much that I ended up throwing up and haven't tried it since. I did buy some sugar free jello and sugar free jello puddings, but unfortunately they are included in the many things that make me gag post surgery. I'd never tried the puddings before, but I had tried sugar free jello from time to time and found it ok, but now I absolutely can't. Same with protein puddings, just the smell makes me sick. I thought I was done with vomiting, since I hadn't done so in a week, but tonight I did again. All I had was a soft boiled egg. I've had scrambled eggs plenty of times before and it was always ok, so I thought I could try soft boiled. I hadn't even finished half the egg when I had to throw up. Feeling kind of defeated tonight, but I guess I'll email the nurse again for advice.

    September surgery buddies!!

For most people, it tends to go away after 3-4 days, once your body converts from burning glucose to burning ketones.
  11. My surgeon's office was pretty strict in that I could only have Carnation Instant Bteakfast made with fat free milk and 2 snacks (sugar free Popsicles, sugar free pudding - not the cups though, a very few grapes, etc.). I was hungry for 3 days but after that I completely lost my appetite and just struggled along to get through the diet for the remaining time.

    September surgery buddies!!

Hell9 all new to the group, scheduled surgery is September 15,the initially wanted the sleeve, but I've been having issues with Gerd so decided to switch to bypass, just started2 week post-op diet ,its hard 2 protien shakes a day and 3 oz protien, meat, salads, ect and snack if i get hungry which i do uugh but i got this i can do it
  13. My doctor and their office has been fantastic. They supplied me with informational packets, what to expect, everything. I made a calendar to make sure I do not miss any upcoming appointments. I am so ready for my New Beginnings. Would love to get ya'lls feedback on the 2 week prior diet to surgery. Ideas and any helpful hints would be so appreciated.
  14. I had the sleeve, and I have PCOS. My hair was down to my butt and was shedding anyways (pcos does that). At about 3 1/2 months post op I started noticing my hair was shedding more than normal and was thinning a little. I went and got it cut to where it just touches my shoulders. That helped a lot with looking fuller, and it's easier to manage and take care of. I always make sure to get the top level amount of protein (80-90mg per day) because your roots and hair need protein to grow but can't produce it. I also take biotin and do hair masks and serums because while it doesn't do anything to prevent hair loss or promote growth, it helps your hair look and feel healthy, shiny, soft, and keeps it from being frizzy. And also, self care is so important. That's why I'm huge into skin and hair care.
  15. Day 3 of the liquid diet and headache from lack of sugar and caffeine are kicking my tail. To top it off they said no pain relievers… How have y’all made it past this?
  16. No one, I mean absolutely no one has the right to talk or not talk to you in such a disrespectful way. Why some parents chose to have children and treat them so horribly is beyond me. My birth father was mentally, emotionally and physically abusive. When my mother left him and filed for divorce and received sole custody, he kidnapped my brother and me and told us our mother had been killed in a car accident. For four years he kept us on the move trying to stay ahead of the law. It was 2 years before our mother her found us and began a battle to get us back. God in his infinite mercy not only made that possible but my mother was married to a kind, gentle loving man who made me feel loved and cherished. Six years later, one week after my graduation from high school, my birth father her showed up at our door. My stepfather who I called Daddy had instilled in me the self confidence that my birth father her had attempted to destroy. I told my birth father off, telling him that I wanted nothing to do with him and that my father her was in the bedroom. I never spoke to him again. That was 52 years ago and I haven’t missed him a second in all that time for one second. you have a wife who obviously loves you and stood by you as you started your weight loss journey. if your mother is so petty as to treat you or her other children in this manner, put her in your rear view mirror and never look back. If something is bad for you, you just have to let it go. Our parents get 18 years to be either a good or bad parent. Once you are an adult, you get to choose your own course in life. You can either pack your awful childhood away and start a fresh journey of your own or you can haul that old baggage around and let it ruin your life. The choice is yours.

Will I ever be hungry again???

I am 3 years out and still do not experience “hunger” in the traditional sense. I’ve had to learn what other cues my body is sending me to let me know it’s time to eat. For example, I will get a dull headache just above the bridge of my nose and my teeth will ache.
  19. This was one of my bigger fears also. I was adamant about hitting my protein and taking my vitamins daily. My hair is thick and has always shed a lot. I am just over 5 months post op, and it may be shedding a little more than normal but nothing that I can undeniably notice. Your hair falling out is because of trauma to your body, it can happy with any surgery not just WLS. Everyone's body reacts differently and recovers differently so no one really knows the real outcome. But, I can say that I am a part of 3 different support groups and 2 FB groups and I have only came across 1 woman that had terrible hair loss and she admittedly stated that she does not properly take care of herself since surgery. (ex: not taking vitamins, not eating right etc) I wouldn't worry that much just take care of yourself. PS: My hair is very long (my profile is an old pic)
  20. My clinic didn't require us to do a liquid diet pre op. They only asked me to lose a certain amount of weight before surgery and suggested a low carb diet, but didn't require any special form of diet. I was on vacation in July and pretty much ate and drank whatever I wanted for three weeks, and still lost two kilos (4.4 pounds). After that, I only had one more kilo (2.2. pounds) to lose before surgery and that was pretty easy. I just didn't eat added sugar and tried to stick to meat and veg.

    August surgery buddies!

You're doing great. 43 pounds is a lot! I know what you mean about the disappointing people. though. I'm kind of frustrated myself, because I'm not seeing any weight loss this week. I started with 102.0 kilos last Saturday, and then went down to 101.3 on Monday, up to 102 again Tuesday, down again to 101.3 yesterday and up to 101.7 today. So, I've lost 300 grams this week, or less than one pound, which is basically nothing. I'm a bit envious that you guys get to meet your doctors and nutritionists already. I had surgery on the 9th of August, and my first appointment is with a nurse on September 22nd. I can email the nurse and nutritionist in the meantime, but I don't get to see anyone. I have no idea if I'm where I'm supposed to be at in my weight loss or not.

    August surgery buddies!

I didn't really feel that much restriction until I started eating actual food. For the first few days, I would sometimes have to throw up, because all of a sudden I would feel like I ate too much, even though I ate slowly, and then nausea would hit me. I still feel nauseated but I haven't had to throw up for more than a week. You're doing great with the protein. I've never managed more than 65 grams per day, but I cannot get the protein drinks or powder down.
  24. ehhh That sucks. I hated crushing and swallowing pills post-op. I seem to be fine with pills now, even 2 or 3 at a time. Luckily!
  25. Sunnyer

    Post Op: Struggling a little

I did broth during the liquid phase and I also forced myself to drink a protein drink a day or eat a protein pudding, even if they made me gag. I didn't actually hit my protein goals during the liquid phase, and I still don't. I was getting maybe 15-30 grams of protein per day during the liquid phase, instead of 75, and during the puree stage 20-65 (most often 25-45) grams of protein per day. To date, my best day has been 65 grams of protein, so I've never actually reached the 75 gram goal. A lot of the protein after the liquid stage has been from fish and beans, but also from eggs and a little milk, Last week I added ground beef and found that I tolerate it well, better than milk products. But the protein drinks and puddings make me gag and throw up, so I makes me able to eat less during the day. I don't know how happy my doctors will be that I skip them, but I just can't. I'm nauseated enough as it is, more or less all day, so I can't deal with the fake sweet taste of most or all protein products.
