    Looking for direction

Hello all, I was not able to sleep tonight and decided to search the net and I happened upon this website. I have been trying to lose weight all my life and I found sone success a few years ago when I lost almost 100 lbs. But life happens and things are not as important so I ended up gaining most of ot back. I find that I am constantly thinking about my weight. I want to do it becasue I know it is not good for me, I want to set a good example for mt kids, I want to live a healthy lifestyle, and a host of other things. I have looked at Lap Band surgery in the past but could not afford it and my health insureance at the time did not cover it. I recently moved to Nothern Mississippi to teach and found that the health insurance is just as bad (bcbs state employee insurance :blushing:) Please Help!!! If anyone can offer me some alternatives to my journey that would be great. Until then keep up the good work and for those of you who are still trying to reach your journey- Don't give up hope. sochi315 :rolleyes2:
  2. Obiviously, I'm new here. Getting banded in 3 weeks, and I'm nervous (probably normal). I just don't know what's ahead of me and I'm pretty uptight. I know I need this, I need to drop the weight so I can go back to a "normal" life and start living again. What's next?

    Personal Trainers & gyms

I love working with a personal trainer for two reasons...1. I don't have to think I only have to do. It is one of the few periods in the day when that happens. 2. It keeps me honest. I feel guilty when I cancel and so I go even when I don't "feel" like it because I don't want to let her down. I've worked with two trainers, the first had a background in body building and while she was good (we became personal friends) I can see now that in some ways she was not right for me. Her focus on building muscle only was part of my burn out with the gym. The person I work with now, has a background in gymnastics and is focused on building muscle...AND...rehabbing/strengthening things like my poor knees. I still get my sweat up but I don't feel so totally wiped like I did with the first one. I've taken a break from training for the next few weeks, lots going on, kids coming to visit, etc. But I've already talked with my trainer about my decision and she is on board! So after my apt on 07 July when my 3 month supervised weight loss period starts I'll be back at the gym....my doc requires a 5% weight loss before surgery.

    Personal Trainers & gyms

I hired a personal trainer since I was 4 weeks out. I work out 3 days a week. $200 for the first 10 sessions, then 35 dollars per session after that if I buy more than 20. I purchased a 40 session package and referred some friends and got 15 more sessions for free. he's certified and he is great for weight loss. Love him!!

    Personal Trainers & gyms

Like you @@kathousefl, I waited for awhile after surgery to start the gym. I never cared for the gym or exercising in general. A good friend of mine turned me on to a weight based group fitness class and it has sparked something in me. I started going and gaining friendships with others that attended the class. After going enough I started seeing gains that actually made a visible difference in my body. That helped motivate me to take a true responsibility for my fitness. You just have to find what works for you.
  6. I looked through the info I had received from my dietician, but I can't find where it tells me how many calories I should be getting each day for optimal weight loss. Can someone please tell me what their dietician has told them. I would like to know the calories, the limit of carbs, etc. I am 3 weeks post op. Thanks in advance for any info you can give.....
  7. I'm so excited. Doc says I can do any exercise now. I don't want to do anything too strenuous in the beginning. I want to gradually build myself up. Any suggestions for some good workouts that incorporate cardio and weights but isn't to hard? I figure I would start off with 30 min a day and build up to an hour.

    Pregnant? Fill Out???

I am also currently pregnant. Due Sept 19th. I did have a complete unfill at 10 weeks due to horrible all-day sickness. I was very anxious and worried about weight gain, but after getting ahold of myself, really I'm doing all of this for my baby. I can always get filled again and jump back on the weightloss track. To be completely honest I don't really have the ability at this point to even eat as much as I did at my most filled state. The baby is taking up so much room, so I am back to eating small meals/snacks throughout the day. My surgeon wasn't worried about the calorie intake while pregnant he was more worried about calories during breastfeeding. It is your decision maybe just a slight unfill as the months go on will work for you. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!!!

10 years out and cannot keep weight on

Hi, I'm 11 years out & am having the same problem w/ keeping weight on, in the last 2 months I've lost almost 25 lbs & 4 sizes. My doctors have no clue what's going on so they sent me to several specialists. I went to a new gastric dr who thinks part of it is my Iron levels. He told me that as a bypass patient we can get some iron from food for about the first 8 years then we can't any longer so we have to get it supplemented (IV iron) he's waiting for blood work to confirm it but I have all the symptoms of it including the urge to always chew ice. Have you ever been checked for your iron? He said even if your basic panel looks ok you may need a more In depth iron count check to make sure. I'm also going for a scope on July 31st to check my pouch & make sure it's nothing else going on because I'm currently have a problem tolerating any meats the only food I have been able to eat is fish. That's been going on about 3 weeks now thank goodness my girlfriend is a chef or I'd be going out of my mind lol! I hope that things get better for you soon!

    Lap Band to Gastric Sleeve

I was banded in 2008, lost a bit of a weight, struggled with finding the perfect fill for me. Eventually I became so miserable with the band that I gave up, ate what was easy to get down, and gained all the weight back. Over the last 2 years or so I was getting so miserable, everything would get stuck and I was having reflux, which I never had. I kept telling the doctors I was slipped, but my X-ray showed everything was in a normal position, so I decided to start the process for a revision. I just revised to the bypass on October 24 and I certainly was slipped, my band was around my esophagus with my stomach incarcerated inside the band. They don't know how I was managing to eat anything, but I was! So far I am SO glad to have revised. The pain was approximately the same as band surgery, I did not need narcotics, my surgery was Thursday, I went back the next Thursday and likely felt good enough to go back sooner. But I can eat comfortably and that was the ultimate goal. If I don't lose another pound, I'd be sad, but I'd be fine because it's so freeing not to have that band anymore. Now, just to get back to reality, I did have complications from anesthesia, so not everything has been rainbows and sunshine, but I'd still do it all over. Your mileage may vary, but based off of my short month long experience, I'd recommend at least talking to a surgeon about revising and seeing how you feel about it after that.

Pre op , stretch marks ugh

    fill or not??

Hi Alex (wow, *another* alex!)-- I gotta say, if you're 5'9" and are only 15 lbs over your goal, you are THERE, baby! I've heard time and time again that the last few pounds come off slowly, and if I were you I'd rather give it more time instead of running the risk of a too-tight fill. You're how old? 19? IMO you should be concentrating on learning how to eat with the fill you've got, and tweaking your habits rather than tweaking your fill. Congratulations on getting so far! You are normal, honey, and 15 lbs on a 5'9" frame is pocket change. Hell, I'm 5'10" and my "goal" weight is a range of 30 lbs! I certainly won't be worried about the "last" 15. Concentrate on school, and staying healthy!! That's my thinking, and you did ask.

    fill or not??

hey guys i need tons of help here!! i'll just start that i am 19 years old and in college living with three other roommates. i am 5ft 9in and started at 207lbs. i am down to 165 which is awesome......but my goal weght is about 150. i have been dealing with a lot of emotional stress the past few years and i will feel finally done with all this when i reach my goal weight! anyway...... i have had 3 fills......and the third one was really tight, which was in september. i continued to lose weight but there was A LOT of food i could not eat. and that made this very hard because i would try to eat a lot of things and PB them. My roommates were kind of curious what was going on and also it stressed me out because i didn't feel like i even had the chance to make "good" or "bad" decisions with food or portion decisions. Which for me is also part of this whole thing...trying to have a moderate normal relationship with food. Now, I have been at the same weight for a good couple of months and I can eat a big variety of foods. Things still get stuck every couple of days or if i eat way too fast. So i am not losing weight and I am frustrated because i feel like I am eating a lot.....i am eating a lot. i work out every day and my metabolism is keeping up, but...... emotionally i just want to reach my goal and be so called normal. i don't know whether to get another fill or not because i don't want to be so restricted again to where I PB every day and i can't eat very many things. that makes me upset as well. i don't want my roommates wondering what's going on as well.( they obviously don't know about my surgery) ADVICE anyone please???? thanks so much- alex*

    Appt with Dr. Billy

Dr. Billy likes to see his patients every 6 weeks. He says his most successful patients do this. He likes to make sure there are no problems, concerns, dietary issues, etc and the every 6 weeks works. I have remained more truthful about what I eat knowing I will see him that often. I did not get a fill this time cause I simply didn't need one. He uses the approach of asking the patient if I feel I need a fill instead of using a strict schedule. Makes me as a patient feel as if I have more control over my own care. As a nurse I love that approach. I don't feel so removed from the doctor that I don't feel comfortable asking him a question. Billy seems like a friend when I visit him. He is so sweet and kind and caring. His PA Dennis is really attentive and funny. My cholesterol was checked by my PCP about a month ago and it was 188. Pre banding it was in the upper 250's. So yes your cholesterol can decrease with weight loss. My blood pressure came down as well and I am off all meds for cholesterol and blood pressure. Have been since I was banded. WHOO HOO!! The H. Pylori test is very cool. You breathe normally then you hold your breath and blow out into this bag. Then you drink this very sweet lemony flavored clear liquid. Wait 15 min and breath into another bag. You even get to keep the nifty glass the liquid comes in. LOL!! I think I answered all the questions. Did I miss anything?
  17. I'm not worried about it......they want me to get down to 127.....I used to weight 110 into my early 20's...will be 50 soon.....I worry I won't be able to lose enough.....

    One month done supervised diet

Fredbear- I'm now on my 5th visit! So have you been approved by insurance after allll this work? Did you have to lose weight during this time? I have not Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. I've been prescribed Qysimia for my 6 month pre-op weight management. I am finished with that and have been approved through insurance. Now I am just waiting for my surgery date. I don't know if I should keep taking the meds or not. I feel like it will help with the pre-op diet because I am not hungry at all while taking them. My surgeon is aware of the meds but hasn't mentioned.
  20. Hi Everyone! I am considering VSG, hoping to have the op sometime in December. I am very aware that the sleeve is a tool. I know you can gain a lot of weight back by making poor food choices (chips, ice cream, slider foods, etc.) and that if you want to keep the weight off, you have to make a lifestyle change. I am prepared for all this, in fact I welcome it greatly. But the more I read, I get scared. I am starting to feel like post 6 months there is not much restriction and you are kind of left to your own devices. Apart of why I am having this surgery is because I feel like a bottomless pit and want an internal stop button. I want to feel full without eating 1000 calories a sitting. To be honest, I don't have much physical hunger to begin with now. I mostly feel (unless I have just eaten the usual big/unhealthy meal) I am up to eat more for the sake of gluttony. I know I have issues with food, I am a recovery addict with some years of sobriety, and I understand since being sober I have used food as a drug. I definitely emotionally eat and most of my hunger is head hunger. Again, I am willing (very willing) to do the work and I know this is a tool, but the some of the things I've read make me feel that after sometime the sleeve is not much of a tool at all:( Can anyone shed some light? I can deal with making the appropriate food changes and eating the right things (i.e. Proteins first, veggies, etc.), but will that make me feel truly full? I am ready to start incorporating a fitness routine but I am just beginning to question if the sleeve provides restriction after the initial honeymoon period.
  21. Okay so I went to the dr Wednesday dec 6th I wrote him a letter with everything that I have tryed and diets, apps ,and gyms. I put skinny pictures of me and now weight pics of me. He knows I have tryed everything under the sun and he thinks it's time, he told me to go to a seminar which I just enrolled and it's dec 15th in Knoxville TN and then after that one see him and he will do the referral letter to the surgeon and they will make apt for me. I'm 5'11 and weight 246 my bmi is 34.5 I know I have to be 35 and 1 or more health issues I have asthma, siatic nerve issues in back and knee problems but I heard that wasn't going to count my dr said that he can make it happen and put i have more issues if I really want this done which is shocking!! So!! I'm going to have to gain about 10 lbs to get my bmi to 35 but scaried to death he can't make it look good on paper for health issues or I could gain another 47 lbs and be at 40 bmi and not have to have any health issues . What do you all think and any advice is greatly appreciated!! I have blue cross blue shield federal also. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. Thanks for sharing Leslie! I am scheduled with Dr. Illan for 3/24- exactly two weeks away! So excited. I have already seen how great the team is, as I was able to skype with Omar and Dr. Illan. I can't wait to be back on here sharing my weight loss success!
  23. I finally have the green light to eat pureed and soft foods but I'm really struggling. Anything I eat - outside of Protein Drinks - I throw up. I thought maybe I was eating too much or maybe too fast so I weighted out 2 oz of rotisserie chicken and pulsed it in my Ninja. I took 10 minutes to eat it. Still no go. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions on things to try? Is this normal?
  24. I started this process on May 4, and I had my surgery on September 12. In between, I lost 56 pounds. Since the surgery, I'm down another 39. I went from 5'5" and 285 to 5'5" and 190. I've lost 10 inches off my waist and went from a XXXL to a large. I stepped back through my old wardrobe so quickly that things I thought would fit for a while no longer fit at all, and I have to start from scratch on my wardrobe. My glucose is 92, I'm off the CPAP, I'm off the cholesterol drug on a trial basis. I look better than I have since high school. I go hiking multiple times a week, I swim multiple times a week, I just bought a kayak. And I'm still losing weight. The 100-pounds-lost mark is right around the corner. This is successful, but not success. Success is many years away, when I'm on my deathbed having never become obese again. And I expect that to be many, many times more difficult than the last few months have been.
  25. Well i made it through surgery and am now at home. I feel very blessed that my surgery was relatively pain free. No pain from the incisions and no gas pain at all. I have not had to take any pain medication. I'm struggling a little getting my liquid and Protein in. I'm using Isopure for that. I can only take it in small doses. I was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon. I slept a little bit in my bed last night but after about three hours I got up and switched to my La-Z-Boy recliner and had a very nice sleep until 7 am this morning. I jumped on the treadmill and did about 10 minutes of slow walking. I'll repeat that process throughout the day. I gained 5 lbs from the IV solution in the hospital but have since dropped that weight and three pounds more. Best of luck to everyone that has had their surgery or is about to have surgery. Dallas
