    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    I don't weigh in until tomorrow but I feel like I've had a good week pushing my fluids and getting lots of steps. We shall see. In next week's edition of how to break a stall, I'm getting a colonoscopy! Lol. This will be interesting.
  2. Honestly, this is my first stall, and I'm almost 8 months out. However, I am often away from the scale for a week or two due to my travel schedule, so it's hard to know for sure. I think if you weigh less frequently you'll notice stalls less, as @The Greater Fool says. I tend to weigh whenever I'm home and then keep track on a rolling monthly basis on MyFitnessPal. Using that system, I was losing about 8-9lbs a month until this month, when I've lost 4lb.

    May 2022 surgery?

    Hi there! My VSG surgery was on 5/3, so I’m 3 days post op. I actually had three surgeries in one. I had my VSG, I had my gallbladder taken out and I had a hiatal hernia repaired. So far, so good. Other than discomfort and swelling it hasn’t been as bad as I expected.

    Absolutely hate myself now

    I don’t love that I had surgery either! My surgery was February 25 then April 13 I was back in for gallbladder removal. A couple weeks later I had a leak, so back to the hospital. I now have bathroom issues, and a super sharp pain under my right rib that take my breath away like a spasm. Nothing has been even close to normal. I thought maybe I was the only one with regrets too!

    I wasn't told to avoid berries after surgery, and I was eating raw veggies about 4 weeks out, but you could probably have canned pears in fruit juice if you drain the juice? I don't worry about the glycemic index. I just try to eat lower carbs and minimize added sugar. No one got fat from fruit! But... your surgeon may have more strict rules, so maybe ask your program's nutritionist?

    High Risk -- Scared of complications

    He's the head of surgery at my hospital, and I was actually warned ahead of time by his PA that he is very blunt and honest, but that he is a damn good surgeon. I did ask him what I could do to reduce the risk factors, and he said it was really too late. The most I could do was continue to lose as much as possible before surgery. I think at my current rate of loss, plus the all liquid diet for the week prior, I could lose a bunch before surgery. He told me the biggest concern is the blood clots. Obviously that is on me to walk a lot and do my injections--which I plan to do. I can try to speak with him again, but knowing his attitude I'm not sure he would offer me much more. He was blunt, went over the risks, and that if I took the bell curve of all the risks, me being in a high risk category would automatically shift me over to the right. He said he couldn't get more into it because he doesn't see people as "risky" as me very often. He's been doing this a long time. I trust his expertise. But hearing he's lost people is just incredibly scary.

    Thank you for the information. I haven't incorporated caffeine back in to my diet yet. I will try that first and then up my calories if I'm still rumbling like the sky before rain. I'm for sure in a stall, which was an issue pre-surgery, and it's hard to break the mindset of disappointment. I know it will start up again but as with most things these days, I want it now. LOL... I love veggies but am still on soft food so I'm eating steamed as snacks, mostly broccoli since I love it. I am ready for some berries but was told because they had seeds I had to hold off. Do either of you have other ideas for fruits, that are low glycemic and good during soft food stage?

    High Risk -- Scared of complications

    While my weight is lower than yours. I am 34 years old, high blood pressure, Sleep apnea, previous heart attack, Heart valve problems, IBS, Diverticulosis. I got the surgery and so far almost 3 weeks post op i am doing fine. I did not have the blood thinners beyond the hospital tho. But thats good that you get that mediation. Its a prefilled type needle that automatically injects it and then a cover comes down to cover the needle once you come out. I got those at the hospital and i will say i am a huge WIMP when it comes to needles and i barely felt it. it goes in your stomach

    The lovely 3rd week stall

    I would get discouraged too easily prior to having my surgery stepping on a scale, so this is why I still have an issue with scales post-op & will only step on a scale at the doctor's office. Plateaus & stalls definitely suck but they do pass. So don't let it get you down.
  10. I am reaching my 3rd week and i believe i have entered my first stall. weight has remained the same for about 5 days. stalls really suck lmao. lets see how long this one last.

    Am I being a big baby

    Absolutely not. I feel like this idea of a higher tolerance for pain isn’t real anyways. Some people have more trauma to their bodies and so they have more pain than others. We all had the same surgery but all of our anatomy is slightly different so for some the surgery is easier for them to do than others. I think I got lucky on this one because i have a long torso which seems like it must’ve given them more room than they are used to to do their work. Most people are feeling at least a little better after a week or so but some take a little longer. However long it takes is okay. Be kind to yourself and you will be back to normal before you know it.
  12. I am in one right now. Surgery was on 4/18 and first week lost 9 lbs. since then nothing. It’s been 10 days….😩
  13. I started at 213 lbs 5’1”. I was on pre liquid for 5 days and lost 12 lbs. I had gastric bypass on 4/18 . I lost another 9 lbs first week. Since then I have been at 192 lbs. I am frustrated too about stalling weight loss after 1 week. I have read if you are diabetic it’s harder to lose weight. Is this true? I am diabetic and my sugar has been going back up steadily. My endocrinologist increased my insulin to 20 units of lantus. Am I going to lose weight? Has this happened to anyone else? I also had to go to ER couple days ago due to impacted bowel. I didn’t poo 11 days then poo then another 7 days no poo. I went to see my endocrinologist and pcp yesterday. They are puzzled why I am not losing weight either. I drink 3 bottles of water and about 70+ protein per day. Please help!!!
  14. My surgery center is great. Everyone is so helpful and responsive. The coordinator, nutritionist, medical assistant are all so helpful. I have emailed them so many times and get such a quick, informative and friendly response. They have a FB support group which the nutritionist does daily recipe videos and all kinds of stuff. ZERO complaints there. BUT LET ME TELL YOU.. the surgeon is an entire different ball game! ZERO response from him. I had to call EVERY day for 7 days for him to call in my prescription because the pharmacy "lost it". It took me reaching out to the coordinator and then I got it resolved the same day. I also had to call about a weird BM problem and that was over a week ago and I called 5 times and STILL no response!! I almost went to the ER to be checked out but I called my PCP and explained the situation and he helped me out. I have a 6 week follow up today and I plan on telling him how I feel about it too, it is ridiculous.
  15. I think everyone above answered your questions so I will just say we had surgery the same day. I hit a stall around 2 weeks and it lasted about 2 more weeks. It is annoying but I know by (our) bodies are adjusting to everything. Just stay on track with your plan and all a sudden the weight will start dropping again. I have lost 30lbs since surgery and we had surgery on the same day. 4/5 lbs a week is great! I was given a graph which shows my projected weight loss over the first year on a monthly basis. According to it, I am ahead of schedule.

    May 2022 surgery?

    Your dietitian should give you a meal plan. 1-2 weeks clear liquid. Broth, sugar free jello, protein waters, 1-2 oz per hour. After 1 week you should have another appointment with your surgeon. He may tell you to go to : Low-fat strained creamed soup Light yogurt Pudding, and protein shakes week 3-4 you may move to puréed food. Mostly protein foods. No heavy fiber vegetables though, like broccoli. Cooked very soft sweet potatoes carrots etc…then purée. Week 5-6. Start with protein-rich foods, such as chicken, fish, turkey, beans and eggs. Around week 5, you can add some vegetables and fruits. Chew until mushy. Don’t forget. Chew chew chew. Don’t drink 30 min before or after a meal. Soft foods are another step closer to eating solid foods, and are introduced around weeks 6-8. These include cooked or canned lean meats, fish, and certain vegetables and fruit. Please consult with your surgeon first. Everyone is different and so are doctors. What I listed is a basic guide. Try tiny bites first. And wait a min. See if you feel like you can tolerate (example:eggs, fish, beef). I’m 61. My surgery date is May 27, for my sleeve. I wish you all the best.

    yea my largest incision still hurts almost 3 weeks post op. The rest are fine. as for the blood thinner shots. before surgery i got it in my arm. Didnt even feel it and left no bruising. After surgery i got them in my stomach. still didnt hurt but left a smaller bruise

    Is my weight loss on track?

    How many times have you seen your surgeon since your surgery? I have to see mine 2 weeks out, 90 days out, and 6 months out, then yearly. Of course, if there's a problem before those appts then I can come in sooner. I think this is pretty standard. Definitely reach out to your nutritionist. They are much more available and a wealth of knowledge.

    Stalls are frustrating. Unfortunately you may experience a few as you’re losing & they may last 1-3 weeks (some do last longer - if yours does check with your dietician to see if you need to tweak your eating plan) but they are just part of the journey. There are lots of variation in the plans people follow. Some are given caloric goals while some aren’t (I wasn’t). Some are given portion size recommendations. Some aren’t. Some who are given caloric goals are encouraged to eat 1200 calories from solid foods. If you are worried, check with your dietician. Even on 1200 calories you will lose weight. As @lizonaplane said the goal is not to feel discomfort or your restriction. The goal is to recognise your real hunger & eat enough to satisfy that. At three years out, I still ask myself do I need the next bite or just want it. Remember it takes time for your full signal to kick in. So when you do feel full you’ve likely eaten more than you need. Exercise accounts for 10-20% of your weight loss. Have 50lbs to lose, exercise will account for 5-10lbs. There are lots of physical, psychological & emotional benefits to undertaking regular exercise. But it’s your choice as to what & how much or often you do. I’m not an exerciser. Did very little while I was losing but I still lost all my weight plus more. I do some gentle stretches now & a few wall push-ups but I argue with myself every night about doing it. 😁

    I was given a pxt too. I laughed when he gave it to me. He also gave me a pxt of my gall mid surgery when he removed that too. Your weight loss the first week or two can be erratic. You can come out of hospital weighing more from the fluid they pump into you. You can one out weighing less because you’re eating so little & may have experienced diarrhoea. Some surgeons say don’t weigh yourself for a couple of weeks because some people can fluctuate a lot - fluid retention, fluid loss, constipation, diarrhoea, struggling to eat, etc. I came out almost 4lbs heavier after my gall surgery. A couple days later spent 24hrs peeing continuously & lost about 3lbs overnight.

    Of course you're not being a baby!!! We just had major surgery!!! We're entitled to handle that however we need to. I'm concerned about your legs swelling, though. That's not supposed to happen. But the rest of it? I feel you there. I have to switch between gatorade zero and protein drinks because I can't do non stop protein. It's just....no. I'm also dealing with pain from the incisions (they REALLY hurt, along with the muscles there) and the lingering gas pain. I feel like I shouldn't complain at all since I was so excited. But again, we had major surgery, and once we get through the worst of it (I'm hearing the first week is the worst) we should be ok.

    7 weeks in-Stall/gaining weight

    Hang in there. I am 3 months out and I've had one stall last a full 3 weeks and 2 others last about 1.5- 2 weeks. It stinks, but it will eventually break. My weight goes up and down by 1 or 2 pounds around these stalls too. Don't sweat it and just keep going. I agree about not doing intermittent fasting. I don't think you need to.
  23. What a journey it has been lately. I’ve gained nearly ten pounds in two weeks...slowly creeping up to a number I fear. At 5’1” I’m now 272 pounds, BMI 52.4. I originally was diagnosed with multiple right upper lobe PEs on 4/16. I was not originally admitted, just sent home on Xarelto. Fast forward to last week, I was admitted for a few days on the cardiology floor for a work up due to a return of symptoms. No new clots, but was diagnosed with Right Ventricle enlargement and Pulmonary Hypertension via a right heart cath. Got discharged, saw pulmonology yesterday, did a walk test, scheduled to come back for PFTs. Last night was feeling worse, high Hr and BP, severe headache, re admitted. Had some basic labs and tests today, they felt comfortable discharging me. Got home an hour ago, started feeling short of breath, dizzy, nauseous again. Checked BP and it’s really high. Going to rest a bit and re check. Don’t want to end up back in the hospital. So exhausted...sick of my weight slowly killing me. I have my initial consults with my Bariatric Surgeon, nutritionist and exercise specialist on Monday (it just got scheduled today) so there’s the beginning of a light, but I’m exhausted. Please pray my BP comes down and I don’t end up back at the hospital.

  25. The problem with traditional dieting is that after you've lost weight, your body literally fights you to the death to put it back on. This has been scientifically proven. I'm sure this has something to do with the fact that humans have evolved to survive in a feast and famine environment throughout 99% of our history. Nowadays, the feast never ends. This is a relatively new phenomenon, and our bodies haven't had time to catch up yet from an evolutionary perspective. It's the reason why the lasting success rates of programs like Weight Watchers, etc are incredibly low. I believe the weight gain relapse odds plummet after two years of keeping the weight off. Most people don't have that much willpower. The only program besides surgery that I've seen truly work is Overeaters Anonymous, and that's for the people who truly work it. This generally means meetings multiple times a week, step work with a sponsor, service work, etc. It's a complete psychological and lifestyle change. Give it another shot if you want, but one thing I'd say is to trust your track record rather than your emotions. It sounds like you've been dieting on and off forever. What'll make this time any different? If nothing changes, nothing changes. I don't think anyone here wanted to have surgery. We did it because we were at our wits end. As for the people in your life who're telling you not to do it, ask yourself how much they really know about it. Like I used to, they probably think it's only for people big enough to be on TLC, super drastic, etc. It's really not, and frankly, I don't think anyone really needs a football sized stomach that produces tons of ghrelin in this day in age. It sounds like you've done a lot of research on the matter. You have a well-informed opinion, which means that you can disregard ones that aren't well-informed. A calculus student probably wouldn't take an algebra student seriously if the algebra student looked over his work and told him that it was all wrong. Btw, staying obese is generally far riskier than bariatric surgery. Diabetes, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, etc versus some very minor surgery risks. I don't know what your personal health situation is, so take what I just said with a grain of salt, but if a decent surgeon looks you over and says you're good to go, you're probably good to go.
