  1. Hi everyone. I just had part 2 of my lap band to sleeve revision surgery on May 17th. I am actually very happy that my surgeon decided to do the surgery in two procedures. Both surgeries had sources of pain for me. With the lapband remove and hernia repair I was extremely sore and bloated. My tummy poked out. It took me about 2-3 weeks to feel closer to normal. With my sleeve procedure I experienced pain from the stomach spasms but very little bloating or incision pain. I could imagine experiencing the pain of both procedures at once. I will admit after the sleeve I thought why did I do this to myself because at times the pain was quite intense however I'm feeling much better day by day and loving how I feel inside. I have already lost 6 pounds and it's been 4 days out!!

SIPS / SADI-S LOOP DS SUPPORT

Actually I've heard it has been done internationally. Spain and other countries. My surgeon recommended it to me after I initially went in for a VSG. And was recommended by him that SIPS providedQ a greater weightloss and greater chance of keeping it off long- term. He's a great surgeon and many of my co- workers have gone to him for wls. My insurance actually gave me his office as a first number to call as one of their in- network providers. And now there are alot more people that have had lap bands and vsg come into his office to get a revision to SIPS/SADIS. So I trust him and I'm not worried at all. So far so good and no regrets. SIPS / SADI-S LOOP DS SUPPORT

It's not a good idea to try to compare your weight loss journey with someone else. My weight loss after the SA-DS is considerably slower than someone who had the procedure as their initial WLS & whose BMI was higher on the day of surgery. Even after the initial gastric sleeve I had in August, 2013, my weight loss was slower than most. I had lost 44 lbs. in the 4 months pre-op but only another 32 lbs. in the first 6 months post-op. When I decided to have the SA-DS I was down 85 lbs. from my initial consult weight. I am currently down a total of 127 lbs., 42 lbs. since my revision consult. The main thing is that all of my co-morbidities have resolved.

    How many nights in hospital?

Was scheduled to be one night but I had too much pain and nausea. I had a band to sleeve revision plus a hiatal hernia so that's why my doc kept me one more night.
  6. I had my surgery on 13th (revision to bypass and gallbladder removal), they gave me "happy juice" in my IV before taking me to the OR, everything was a breeze from there. Actually think that my surgery day was the easiest of the recovery. When I woke up in recovery they had my pain button set up and I used that thing as soon as I felt any pain, I think I was allowed twice per hour. Once I passed my upper GI the next morning I was starting on liquids... So I ordered few things to try what will go down... chicken broth was so bland and gross, I didn't want it... So I stuck to the beef broth and caffein free hot tea. It was painful for me to drink cold so I just kept sipping on warm drinks while at the hospital. Not sure if every hospital does this but they gave me this Bari bear to hold on my belly when I would try to get up it was very helpful, I even use it right now at home still when I have some discomfort. The gas pain was bad for me, I was told to walk walk walk and that's what I did, all the nurses new that I probably did the most walking but the only way I could actually release that gas after few days is by sitting on the recliner in the room and having my legs bent, plus being in bed so much was hurting my back so it was a nice alternative. Liquid pain meds are not the best tasting but you get used to it. You will do great! It gets better everyday!

SIPS / SADI-S LOOP DS SUPPORT

Dr. Srikanth is very meticulous. My original sleeve & gall bladder surgery took about 3 hours. More than half of that was the gall bladder as it had some HUGE stones & was adhered to everything around it. My sleeve revision & SA-DS last December took about 7 hours. Again, he had to be very careful doing the part around the duodenum because of adhesions from the previous surgery. I also had a hiatal hernia repair. Just out of curiosity, why do you have your surgery listed as "gastric sleeve" when you had a single-anastomosis duodenal switch? I know the SA-DS/SIPS includes a sleeve, but the more significant component is the switch.
  8. That's a good question lol I know the Bypass is the best option esp with the long term results, but the whole malabsorption really scares me I'm going to attend another support group tonight with a friend of mines who did the lap-band 9 years ago. She is thinking of revising to the Bypass herself. Her surgeon said the lap-band is just like the sleeve and it's a waste of time. We go to the same medical group just see different surgeons. So I guess you guys are right each surgeon is different. I would be concerned about a surgeon who says the sleeve is just like the band and a waste of time. The theory behind the two, restriction of food intake, is the same but that's about it. There are plenty of people, me included, who are amazingly successful with the sleeve. I've lost close to 130 lbs and am 2 years post surgery. I think you need to gather all the information you can and go with the procedure that's right for you. Need RNY but...

@@ridgerunner There are pros and cons to each of these surgeries, but regardless of which you choose, how well you do will ultimately depend on you. I know two people who had bypass about 2 years ago. Neither reached goal and both lost control and gained their weight back, one is currently also in rehab (for the second time) thanks to her new alcohol addiction. So there's that bit. I flip flopped between the sleeve or bypass decision right up to the point where I needed to decide for insurance approval. I also relied heavily on nsaids for arthritis and any other pain in the wherever. In the end, I chose the sleeve for the options it offers, not only with meds (which my surgeon okay'd once I reached all foods stage tho I've barely needed them), but when my surgeon told me that there are more options for sleeve revision and basically none for bypass, that sealed the deal for me. Commitment scares me a little Also since the sleeve is next to impossible to stretch, I feel it will serve me better in the long term. Portion size has always been my biggest problem. At this point, I am thrilled with my sleeve decision! All that said, you have to choose the surgery you feel is best for you, but be sure to look at all the angles. Tons of people here have blown right past their weight loss goals with the sleeve. Forget about the statistics. The end result is up to the individual and how well one chooses to work their tool. Good luck!
  10. Many people revise from vsg to bypass. They still have a stomach. It cures reflux in almost everyone. Ask your surgeon about the mechanical details of how it all works, I am sure he or she can do a better job explaining than I can!

    Pregnant 8 months post op

I finally had it done with Dr. Khalid Merza (Dr. Sultan Altemyat's partner). He is great honestly.. Well both of them are great. But when it comes to revision or reversal I think I'll chose a government hospital. I think government hospitals are better able to handle severe complications like bleeding. The setting is much better in all aspects .. Not that my doctor wasn't able to handle my bleeding, but the hospital setting was just not what I expected. Not to mention the huge hospital bill I was left with.. It was literally more than the cost of the surgery Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Total failure, but hoping to start again

During my initial consultation, I wanted a sleeve. My family was very anti-sleeve because it is permanent. My doctor actually agreed, saying my health was fine and that I didn't need to lose so much weight that I would need a permanent surgery like the sleeve. When I saw my doctor last, I asked about revising to the sleeve as I have concerns about the band longterm. She said again that if I was having no problems, I did not need to revise. Maybe the weight gain since then would change her mind? In the band's defense, despite not being great for actual weight loss, I did not experience many of the horrible complications I have read about online. My gallbladder actually had nothing to do with the band, but with years of extreme high protein/low carb dieting and quick weight loss. Still, I want to lose weight! Maybe I will see what she says. I don't really have time right now for a revision, but I want to be healthy and if that is what it takes... It is hard because she is so glamorous and I can really tell when she is disappointed. Well, I worked up the courage to reschedule the appointment I cancelled this week. I have one in a few weeks. Maybe by then I will have lost a couple pounds from restricting calories? Yeah, that feels right to me! I am shooting for that as I find it difficult to meet Protein requirements (and be a pleasant, functioning human person) at 600-800. If I find that I'm not losing weight, I can restrict down.

    So scared with this stricture

It totally blows my mind that any doctor would perform either procedure on someone with anorexia/bulimia, much less revise it. And revise it again? How is that possible? What would be left? Maybe he could slap a band on it, too? Blow it up with a balloon? Yikes.
  14. Ahh it's a relief to hear about people who are doing really well. Sugar sometimes cause me to dump and others it's fine. Haven't tried high fat food yet but dairy and cheese I can tolerate well it was Protein shakes that caused the worst dumping. I'm sorry do you mean your bypass was 9 feet?? That's around 2.7 meters.. Isn't that a lot!!!! I only had 1.8 meters that's around 5 feet.. I'm glad your not having problems with your labs because malnutrition was really what was scaring me out of all this.. That's reassuring, I hate taking anything chewable and chalky and I definitely hate having to take my vitamins several times per day.. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Yes my bypass is close to 9', with revision from sleeve it is usually recommended (by dr. Rutledge) to go longer on the bypass and leave sleeve pouch alone.
  15. I'm an original band patient (2007) then revised to sleeve (2013) and MGB April 2014 so I'm 1 year 1 month post op. I'm very happy with my MGB, I haven't had any issues with malaborption so far and I'm honestly not great with my Vitamins. I take a couple one a days and b12 when I remember it. My bypass is around 9' and I was only 189 the day of surgery. Dairy and high sugar give me TERRIBLE gas and high fats make my dump but really everything I eat goes through me pretty quickly. I'm happy to answer any questions.
  16. Even funnier are those by people who have. I do realize that when people research surgery, they may not research all the varieties (or even their own!!), so of course there may be misunderstandings, but when other WLS patients spout off "facts" about surgery with no real basis for their beliefs, I've got to laugh. It's been an epidemic around here lately, so let's see which "facts" we can debunk. **DISCLAIMER. I am NOT an expert on anyone but me. I had sleeve surgery. I am confident that I can not talk about bypass, bands, balloons, revisions, switches, etc. with any personal knowledge. This thread is for sh!ts and giggles only.** Sleeves do not "grow back". I know the whole stretching thing is debatable but I can say without a doubt, they don't grow. And yes, there is a difference. You cannot feel your staples through your skin. If you can, you've lost far too much weight and should seek immediate medical attention. If you have a sleeve, you do NOT have a pouch. liquid will not stretch your sleeve no matter what kind of liquid it is. Liquid runs through a sleeve quickly. You can eat around your sleeve (I did it yesterday), so you do have to be forever mindful of this tool you now possess. Your way is not the ONLY way nor is MY way. Neither are the BEST way, either. There are a lot of different roads, hopefully they all end up at the same destination. You cannot/will not poop out your staples. Really.

    FINALLY!

I just had my revision done May 11! Congrats! I was so glad to get rid of the band!
  18. I have screwed up a lot since I got my band, namely gaining nearly all the weight I lost back. To be honest, I barely can tell I have the band and it doesn't restrict me much. I never got a fill as back when I was seeing my surgeon on a regular basis, she felt I was losing at a steady pace; however, I began to have problems about six months after the surgery and she dismissed my pain as gas. She is a very busy person, that's fine, and I don't blame her. The pain escalated until I was barely eating for fear of triggering a pain attack I thought came from gas. I was probably hovering around 400 calories a day and I never looked better... Until the pain got really bad, lasting for 15+ hours at a time, and I ended up in the ER. It turns out my gallbladder needed to be removed. I was so relieved that I could finally eat after the removal that I just kept eating...and eating...and eating. Constant hunger + habitual emotional eating + new career + a husband who eats amazing things for work = essentially back to where I started. Here I am, fat and considering myself a failure. I have gained and lost a lot of weight multiple times in my life, using willpower, a personal trainer, Phentermine and then the lap band. I am very lucky that I don't have any weight-related health issues, but as I get older I know that won't be true forever. I haven't seen my surgeon since January 2015, and I am too ashamed to go in and talk to her about the constant gaining. I've decided to go back to dieting on my own until I feel like maybe I can face her without being really anxious. Has anyone failed after the band and come back on their own through diet and exercise? I'm not great at fitness but I'm going to try my best. Am I doomed? Do I just need a fill or even a revision to deal with not feeling restricted? Hunger? I am thinking about going for 900-1000 calories (less than 40g carbs, mostly protein) and working out about 5 days a week. I'm eager to hear stories of a second try at weight loss after surgery...
  19. I got approved for my revision!!!!!!!! *bounces around the room excitedly* Surgery isn't scheduled yet but I have a tenative date of June 6th or sometime that week

    So scared with this stricture

Nor did I think it was possible to "revise" from a gastric bypass to a sleeve. Is it?

    May 24 Surgery Day

I can relate to everyones feelings, I'm having a revision from LB to GB on May 24th as well. I'm 54; 5'5'' ; 235lbs. I'm very excited & blessed to be getting a second opportunity - to embark on a healthy lifestyle again. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. today is one year anniversary of the revision from band to sleeve. height is 6'1 and weight 183 today. i was 226 day of surgery with a low BMI, I have dropped the weight and now I'm under the BMI guidelines for my height and weight. wanted to inquire with all of you about any further weight reduction after hitting the one year mark . Will this be it for me? Or is more weight reduction even possible. any feedback is appreciated.

    BMI 31-32

Today is exactly one year that I got my revision from band to sleeve. My BMI at the time of surgery was 30 and insurance approved and paid 100% for it. I was told by the surgeon before hand that the weight loss would take time since I did not have very much to lose. I actually dropped the weight rather faster than expected and within 6 months I already was where I needed to be. Went from 226 down to 185.. Currently my weight fluctuates between 179-185. I know that human anatomy has alot to do with the weight reduction and as a guy it is much easier to drop the weight than a girl.
  25. That is my exact reasoning, too, Harsha. I was unsure about sleeve vs bypass, but with the bypass there's 20 years of post-op data vs 5 for the sleeve, and since I only want to go on the operating table once if possible, I might as well do the bypass now. I don't know if I would have the insurance or personal funds to pay for a revision. And....I am 48 years old and this has been a lifetime issue, so I ought to give myself the best chance of long term success. Fingers crossed for your approval!
