  1. Mine actually told me after our initial talking and the extensive (600 questions) testing that while I was clearly intelligent I have a problem with following rules and that would make me a poor candidate for this type of surgery. Really. I then discussed that I have always been a problem solver and one to think outside of the box at times (qualities I think make me a good nurse practitioner) but that I had NO INTENTION of not following the rules and recommendations of the bariatric team since they clearly know more than me in this situation. He then said he would need to write it up in such a way not to disqualify me. I am still a little put off about the whole thing.

    Surgery, “it’s the easy way.”

Guess what, I thought I had heard all the weird and pointed remarks against us and surgery. Well I've got a new dig. Do you know why I'm planning surgery? Because I lack, committment. Look I have been chasing the sparkling elusive Butterfly of Bariatric Surgery, up the hills, down the hills, around the bends, across the swamp of "You're old and foolish" with it's quicksand of doubt on either side, through the briars of "We think you should consult another specialist" and even across the rope bridge of " Don't call us-We'll call you" and now when I think I can see my finish line ahead, you tell me surgery means I have faulty committment? And now before I finally have to go through a liquid diet that wouldn't keep a hamster happy and not be proved to throw things? When I start throw things I've already planned my first target? Who will it be, take a good look in the mirror! Now kindly move to one side so I can get on with this mission.

    First day of liquid diet

I always buy decaf now it was a switch I dreaded due to my heart doctors orders then for this bariatric surgery coming up 6-4-18 but I find now it's satisfying, of course I buy Dunkin Donuts from their shop but Wal-Mart has it or their store brand of donut shop kind or breakfast blends are good too or just look for samples of decafs try them you may be surprised. 4. The thing is many people don't seem to do this and you can feel their frustration. (I guess we all know at least one person who is like this). They never seem to be satisfied with what they have reached and there seems to be an interesting line between "wanting to be the best you can be" and striving for more to reach the next doable goal and "linging on to goals that they will never reach without running themselves into the ground if ever and missing to celebrate the successes they had and have in life. "I'm not a success until I reached my goal 110% and rather feel like **** because I'm only earning 250k a year instead of 350k a year!". In terms of WLS: "I'd rather feel like **** about myself because my BMI only dropped from 48 to 28 but my goal is dropping from 48 to 22.41232 and having the hot body of a 20 year old and nobody is going to change that!!!!" Yeah well, of course people can go through life with that kind of attitude. When it comes to weight loss it seems to be quite common. Bariatric treatment teams seem to have a long way to go when it comes to their patients' attitude regarding weight loss success.

    So frustrated

I agree whole heartedly! Most doctors don't realize how grave the consequences are of their actions. It can impact peoples lives so much. And a lot of doctor's offices are just skating by without any sense of organization or good office policy in place. With a bariatric doctor, there is always a program. You'd think they'd be a well oiled machine. Hang in there love, this too shall pass.

    The Six Month March

My nutritionist gave me a large packet of very useful information, most of it had to do specifically with what to expect before and after surgery, and to to maintain a new and healthier life-style. But it was the lists that are helping me make the life-style changes that I have taken whole heartedly. I would like to share these with, in hopes that they can help you in the way they are helping me. Here is how it was explained to me; from the first list of 20 options choose 2 modifiers and start employing them into you life. Then, when you see your doctor in a month, choose two more. Don't just choose them, but add them to the previous months modifiers. Repeat this month after month. I call these modifiers, as that is essentially what you are doing, modifying what and how you eat. here is the first list: 1. Do not skip breakfast - eat three distinct meals per day. Avoid grazing. 2. Decrease portion sizes and stop eating when you are no longer hungry vs. when you are full/satisfied. 3. Limit eating out to once/twice per week; make better choices when eating out; ask questions about how the food is prepared. This might mean you cook more at home and meal prep. 4. Increase fruits and vegetables by including one or both at each meal. 5. Reduce desserts/candy/sweets to one time per week. 6. Reduce grab-n-go processed foods such as granola bars, chips, frozen meals, PB crackers etc. 7. Prepare meals with a half-plate portion of non-starchy veggie, a palm-sized portion of lean protein, and 1/3 - 1/2 cup of healthy carbs. 8. Avoid fried foods and begin choosing leaner meats (Leaner meats include the word round or loin such as sirloin, top rounds etc.) 9. Begin some sort of activity every day even if just for 5 minutes (walking, swimming, exercise videos etc) Reduce time sitting. 10. Decrease caffeinated, sweetened, and/or carbonated beverages with the goal of eliminating. 11. Start gradually increasing your water intake until you are up to at least 64oz per day. 12. Reduce alcohol with the goal of eliminating. 13. Begin a multivitamin daily (after surgery, you will switch to a quality bariatric vitamin). 14. Begin calcium citrate with vitamin D 500mg twice daily. 15. Practice taking bites the size the size of a thumbnail, eating more slowly, chewing more. 16. Practice SIPPING beverages---no longer "chugging" or gulping. 17. Practice NO LIQUIDS 30 MIN. BEFORE/DURING AND 30 MIN. AFTER MEALS. 18. Practice positive self-talk; weight loss isn't easy, so be nice to yourself! 19. Begin to reduce use of straws and gum. 20. Track calorie intake. The first month I chose #7 and #18. This month I chose #9 and #20 I hope this will be of some use to you who are just getting started, and to those of you already on the losers bench...

    Post surgery struggles

I think this is probably a bigger part of the problem than you may realize. I would suggest that you start a food journal and keep very accurate notes on what you are eating and how much. You may want to buy a kitchen scale in order to weigh out your food to keep better notes. It is good that you are recognizing when you are doing things you shouldn't but recognition alone is not enough, you will need to make a concerted effort to change that behavior if you want to be successful. It seems like you may be excusing yourself for eating things you know you shouldn't. Remember the surgery is only a tool, there are no shortcuts or cheats here. You have to be willing to take personal responsibility to not "cheat" on your diet. If you have not received good guidance I would highly suggest you make an appointment with a bariatric nutritionist to get a meal plan set up. Good luck and I hope you are able to get back on track as quickly as possible.
  8. "This is more of an academic question, I'm not concerned about my own adjustment and am not looking for encouragement or advice - just curious." None of us are medical professionals on this site. All we can give is our own experiences...Take what's useful and ignore the rest. QUESTION: Is bariatric surgery designed to stop patients from over indulging in taste and capacity? None of us can say how you will experience satisfied, cravings, taste, (tasted enough) feeling content, capacity. It is specific to each person. I can't predict how this will feel for you years out from surgery. All I can say is four years out eating healthy is normal. It's not an endless head game for me. I feel satisfied by taste and quality over quantity.

This might be a huge part of the problem. I wish your clinic did a better job. Well..if you can't get your guidance from your clinic, maybe try some of the books for folks who have had bariatric surgery? There are a bunch of them out there that might be really helpful to you. Wishing you the best.

No your luck just got better, you've got Bariatric Pal and me, although perhaps I'm not quite in the same class.😛
  13. Sandy not a good sign, when there are happy happy people you'll find them anywhere. If it's not too late please for my,peace of mind and yours too, call Bill Yanez at Bariatric Pal MX, I'm lucky I have insurance that covers me here in the US but,if I was going to Mexico that would be the only place I would consider. You are too good a person, to sacrifice yourself to just anybody. Go to a place where they are not just in it for the money but to truly help people. 😛 Choose and choose wisely. Nuff Said?

Seems to be part,of the immediately, pre surgical waiting room we all are in. Smooths out fairly quickly after surgery, usual progression is from OMG what Did I Just Do? to Whoee I can do This After,All! I am looking forward to both stages, all a part of my Bariatric Growth😝👍😝

    Keto

True Keto is very high fat (like >70 grams), moderate carb (30-45 grams) and very low carb (<20) a day. I am 4 years out and have been Keto for a while. My surgeon and docs are all for it, I used this to conquer some regain and also to resolve a health issue. It is quite different from a 'bariatric' diet. I don't drink milk or eat yogurt anymore, I follow the rules of keto, I eat my macros calculated out for me. They change as my weight goes down. I also incorporate Intermittent Fasting which also has made a huge difference. I will probably eat this way forever. There are tons of resources out there, especially on youtube and there are substitutes for EVERYTHING, but I try to stick to a very basic food list.

    Any April 2018 Sleevers?!?!

Well I think I hit the infamous 1st plateau. I’ve been struggling to get my protein in as I just could not drink the shakes let alone the 2-3 needed in the FL stage. Being dairy sensitive my NUT and I knew the FL was going to be my biggest challenge. I tried switching to liquid protein flavored drinks but it’s seriously like drinking kool-aide a 6 year old made aka wayyyy too sweet. Liquid/blended soups have at least gotten me most of the way there but not the 70+ goal I should be getting. I’m so looking forward to the soft foods stage. I ordered a couple of Bariatric Cookbooks to help get my head around what a serving size is since we love to cook in our house. Now I just need to get my butt more active. Best thing: I get to take off my steri strips today! (Two week mark)

  23. I don’t need to read every page on google for bariatric surgery nor do I need an encyclopedia so don’t be horrified for me. I have a nutritionist and a team of doctors and a line to reach my surgeon 24/hours a day. I don’t need my procedure broken down to me I know what it’s all about as well as most of us who decided this is was best for our health. This is a support group where people exchange ideas, recipe and any other sort of curiosity. These forums aren’t in place for doctors advice, with that said all your materials couldn’t prepare you for what lies ahead because that’s to be determined. like yourself all we can do is inform ourselves and exchange ideas and share our own individual experiences. Any MAY sleevers???

Dear TeatherMarie, So many people on this forum understand what you’re going through and felt the same way. With few exceptions, all of them are so glad they had the surgery. The surgery itself was the easy part since you are not awake. Getting to the surgery will be the hardest part for you. I’ve had 2 back surgeries, 2 C-sections, under anesthesia 2 times for dental, anesthesia for a lumpectomy, etc. After you see the care and professionalism of your medical team in action on the day of surgery, I think you will feel in good hands. Honestly, no stone goes unturned, and all precautions are taken to keep you safe. If you are still uneasy, talk to your Bariatric team staff and ask all the questions you want. 25. Hi everyone, I am brand new here. 60 year old female. Bariatric sleeve surgery 2/20/18 (11 weeks ago). Surgery weight 235, current weight (unofficial, home scale) 210. I’m super depressed today because last week I was 205 on this scale. True I weighed myself today after breakfast and drinking 40 oz of water, but I thought my weight would be down, not up. Truth is, I’m having trouble staying away from bad foods. I thought this would be a lot easier. I babysit my grandchildren at my daughter’s house, where everyone is skinny and there’s tons of contraband food hanging around all the time. I am walking every single morning at a brisk pace for 20 minutes which I love, but maybe I should be doing more? Is anyone else having similar trouble?
