Looking for Breakfast Ideas
lifeofblair replied to melyssafaye's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I did applesauce on my soft food phase and you can add unflavored protein powder. I'm lucky I haven't had any issues with eggs and I will eat yogurt for breakfast. Sometimes I eat leftover dinner for breakfast though. I found a recipe for "breakfast brownies" that's made from peanut butter, bananas, protein powder and unsweetened cocoa. I usually make them when my bananas are going bad. But not sure they will work for you right now since you are in soft food phase. -
Since my sleeve was in 2011, the Protein targets were more like 60grams.... which wasn't so easy to get at just 7 weeks out! There is considerable evidence that higher protein targets especially for bigger people is very helpful so I would be aiming in the 80-100gram range if at all possible. I ate alot of low carb Protein drinks, greek yogurt, lean meats like fish chicken etc. I would occasionally get some veggies in but not much. It took a few months before I had capacity to resume eating much in terms of veggies. I never have added alot of fruits due to the sugars.

Looking for Breakfast Ideas
melyssafaye replied to melyssafaye's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thanks for all the great ideas. @@Cervidae I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I can't stand even frozen yogurt. Too much yogurt taste. Greek is the worst! It smells almost as bad as it tastes. I've tried fried eggs, poached, mayo and custard all were a no go. It's frustrating because I love eggs and my baked custard recipe is high protein/low carb and yummy. @@Cape Crooner. I'll try that. Maybe egg beaters will agree with my tummy. @@2goldengirl I haven't tried boiled. Here's hoping! @@Sophie74656 I've seen protein pancakes as well but I wonder what to put on them. I can't imagine maple syrup is allowed. -
If think by my 7th week I was cleared for most food. I probably still ate a lot of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese. Turkey, tuna, refried Beans, etc. My Protein target was and is 100 grams of protein.

No yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, or Protein shakes? Hmm, that eliminates pretty much any idea I'd have for you (almost every breakfast I do has one if not a couple of those). Hopefully your tastes develop and your stomach settles. Look into the alternative forms of protein. You're kind of limited with your soft stage, but even more limiting is what you don't like. Tofu is a good source or protein that is soft. Check out Paleo diets that are low carbs and high protein.

At 7 weeks post-op I had JUST been cleared for solid foods. I was aiming for 100 grams of Protein a day. My day looked something like this: Breakfast: Protein shake Morning Snack: String cheese Lunch: 2-3 ounces of soft meat (pulled chicken, tuna salad, etc.) Afternoon Snack: Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt Dinner: 2-3 ounces of soft meat (pulled chicken, tuna salad, etc.) Evening Snack: Protein Shake Hope that helps!

Few pounds up after weight loss post up
Daisee68 replied to yami17leth's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't panic. All scales are different first (especially if you are weighing at home without clothes and now you have clothes on - hopefully anyway ). Also, not sure how far post-op you are, but 17 pounds is amazing. Many gain right after surgery due to swelling and fluids from surgery and then nearly everyone hits a stall at 3 weeks because your body is adjusting. It's all part of the process. You are doing great. Hang in there! Oh and what are you using for Protein? Have you tried the Premier Protein ready to drink shakes? They are really good. Only 11 oz and 30g of protein. Highly recommend them if you haven't. For powder I use Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate (be sure to get Isolate). The chocolate is great and the vanilla is too (and it smells heavenly). I add 1/2 scoop of Protein Powder to greek yogurt in addition to using them to make shakes. -
How exciting!! Sounds like you're doing all of the right things. I was only in the hospital for a couple of hours and needed a ride home (but I felt pretty good!). I was drinking Water right away but couldn't stomach Protein Drinks the first three days (just the thought made me queasy). I actually preferred ice chips and Popsicles at first. I then added jello. Bone/sipping broth is a great option too (it's clear but has protein), however I couldn't stomach it either. After a few days I was good with yogurt and clear Soups. The hospital called me the day after and my doctor called the day after that, but that's it. Sounds like you're getting great support! I was able to drive myself to a doctor's appointment (unrelated to the procedure) two days later and to my post-op appointment a week later, but I'm sure everyone is different and I was not on narcotics. I had my procedure on a Wednesday and went back to work on Monday. I was fine but, again, everyone is different. Which type of balloon are you getting? What part of the country are you in? Just remember, while you may feel crummy for a few days after, it will probably pass sooner than later. Rest up and slowly introduce new foods. Hydrate and get protein in as soon as you can. A lot of the protein drinks are too thick and sweet for me. My endocrinologist recommends Orgain, which is nutritionally complete and tastes good (thin like milk and lightly flavored), but it does not have as much protein as I would like. I discovered Organic Fuel by Organic Valley which I also like - not as many Vitamins but more protein. My endocrinologist gave it a thumbs up as long as it is not the only form of nutrition that I'm getting (i.e. I need more vitamins). The two don't have as much "stuff" in them as some of the other options, but at least I can get them down (and they're organic without a lot of garbage in them) ... so they're certainly better than nothing. :-) One more thing - I bought barf bags on Amazon - lol! I didn't need them like I thought I would, but they gave me great peace of mind. I kept them in my purse, car and office. The thought of being in a public place and having to run to the bathroom freaked me out. Fortunately that never happened (although I got sick at home at midnight the first day and twice in the morning of the second day), but I was still glad I bought them. And seeing as some people get sicker than others, I would still recommend them, just in case. Good luck - please keep us posted and let me know if you need any more tips or tricks. If so I'm happy to help. :-) Cheers!

What are your go to "snacks"?
Clementine Sky replied to Deleted Profile's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Lately I've been loving Siggi's yogurt for an afternoon snack or as a dessert. http://siggisdairy.com The vanilla flavor is lower in carbs and also my favorite in regards to taste. If I've had a small lunch I'll have a more substantial afternoon snack, such as a smoothie made with a Greek or Bulgarian yogurt that is high in Protein (over 20 grams a cup) with some frozen fruit that is relatively low in carbs, such as raspberries. I also enjoy: - Crispbread (IKEA's multigrain crispbread only has 45 calories, 1 gram of fat, and 7 grams of carbs). By itself it's not very appealing but it's wonderful as a base for all sorts of toppings. I'll put half a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese on it, some mozzarella, Trader Joe's tahini, hummus, cucumbers with a tiny bit of cream cheese and some salt and pepper, or a scrambled egg. It's very versatile. - coffee either with Fairlife milk and some SF Torani syrup or with a chocolate Protein Drink - Dark chocolate caramel wedges from Trader Joe's. (They're great for when I need just a bite of something sweet. One piece has 30 calories and 3.5 carbs) - Kefir (always the plain kind that is lower in sugar) - Sour patch Kids popsicle (more of an after workout snack) - Clementine - A spoonful of Pic's Peanut Butter, or have it with apple wedges. It's more expensive than other brands, but it's also more delicious to me, and it's just got 1 carb per serving) - Marinated mozzarella balls from Trader Joe's - Chia pudding -
I am getting my balloon placed on Friday and I'm N-E-R-V-O-U-S. I've stocked my fridge with premier protein drinks, Isopure drinks, gatorade , jello and yogurt drinks. Even though I feel like I've prepared the best I can, I've got a few questions and would love any feedback. How long did you stay at the hospital after the placement? I'm thinking the sooner I can leave the hospital the more comfortable I can get at home. The nurse told me between her and the NP they will be calling me every day for the first week. Is this typical with everyone else? I'm really hoping I can drink fluids afterward and avoid getting dehydrated. How soon did everyone start drinking fluids? I'm confused about sipping on drinks versus normal drinking. My nurse told me that I should be able to drink normally once I get home. I've read that you should sip on drinks... I have the patch and zofran and really hoping to avoid nausea and vomiting so I can tolerate drinking. I can't believe I'm going in about 6 days after for a postop. How did everyone do with those first couple of postop visits? Could you drive yourself? Am I forgetting anything? Wish me luck!!!

What are your go to "snacks"?
Deleted Profile replied to Deleted Profile's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
That's a pretty awful snack. It's got practically no Protein and is mostly carbs and it gets you started back on the carb train towards crackers and other bad stuff you should not be eating and should be avoided. I eat cheese sticks, slices of deli meat with pickle slices, carbmaster yogurt (available at Kroger), cottage cheese, pork rinds, or small amounts of mixed nuts like walnuts and almonds with a couple of low cal cheese wedges (think laughing cow). Pork rinds are ok? I would think that would be bad? "In the end we only regret the chances that we didn't take." -

refried Beans and cheese? Also have you tried eggs cooked in different ways? I still have issues with scrambled, for example, but I can easily eat sunny side up. I, too, despise yogurt of all kinds. "Snacking" on pre op diet
Lizardlady replied to Lizardlady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will be getting more protein in today with my Isopure which is supposed to be here today (ordered online) and also I plan on having some greek yogurt with my lunch. I am hoping that the increased protein will help me feel less hungry. I also plan to do a shake for breakfast and then for lunch I'll eat some soup and then for dinner another shake so that I feel like I ate something in the middle of the day and won't be so hungry at night..... I HOPE lol! -
It entirely depends on your program. Some surgeons emphasize a very low carb approach, others don't. Mine doesn't, she gives me a Protein minimum and a calorie range. My carbs these days come from dairy and veg, mostly dairy such as yogurt and cottage cheese. I don't have much room for veggies yet.

@@adrinanna - I mix a scoop of my flavored protein (chocolate/vanilla/salted caramel) to about 1/2 cup of plain non fat greek yogurt and stir. Its my version of pudding -
I like the refried Beans with cheese melted on top a lot. I'll do that one too. I do eat the hummus just with a spoon. Love it. I also love the Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt and I do eat those as well. The scoop of Protein powder mixed in is a great idea for upping protein! Thanks for that advice.

Here is the recipe for Ricotta Bake (may be the same one you have above - I cannot see it). Also some other good ideas. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html I ate a lot of fat free refried Beans with cheese melted on top; hummus (yes just with a spoon); Pimento Cheese spread; Laughing Cow cheese wedges; sugar free pudding with 1/2 scoop Protein Powder mixed in; Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt (Key Lime and strawberry Cheesecake are my favorites) with 1/2 scoop Protein powder mixed in....

@@Sherry, if it is the unflavored unjury (my favorite) you can mix with pretty much anything. Watch adding to hot liquids as it will clump Ex: coffee. Mix with a little warm Water then add to hotter liquid. chicken broth, tea, egg drop Soup, crystal light etc. I also do not like the taste of the Isopure, unflavored, that I have, so I am adding a 1/2 scoop of it to my LightNFit Greek yogurt to bump up the Protein (and hide the taste!).

"Snacking" on pre op diet
Lizardlady replied to Lizardlady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I imagine it's going to be the same for me. The last time I was on a diet like this the first few days were the worst and I felt like I was starving but after that I kicked the carb craving because it was pretty easy from there. I am allowed greek yogurt and all the same stuff you are as well. My book says I'm allowed 97-98% fat free, low sodium: Healthy Valley, Amy's, Campbell's Healthy request, and Progresso but the problem is that most of those Soups have starch in them (which on day 10 I was supposed to eliminate starch) OR they are FULL of carbs (like the Campbell's Healthy Request Tomato soup I had last night) and I'm supposed to stay under 40g of carbs per day. So what exactly does that leave me with? I guess greek yogurt, jello, pudding, popsicles and protein drinks? Which is fine but they really should say something about those soups cuz I went and bought a bunch assuming I could have them and then I find out really, most are not doable at all or just 1 bowl will fill your carb intake for the entire day lol. I'll be ok but it's a lot to try and keep track of and I'm already irritated when I feel like I'm so hungry I could eat a horse. -
In that phase, I pretty much only had my premier Protein shake, Water, hot tea, sugar free popsicles and Soups. I had oatmeal, cream of wheat, s.f. puddings, mashed potatoes and gravy, yogurt smoothies with added protein powder. I really didn't want to eat and even today, I mostly just want soups. So, I make sure they are loaded with protein! Check out Bariatric Eating.com great ideas.

Poached egg week 1 post opp?
Brenda Sherwood replied to PissiChrissi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Programs are quite different. Im supposed to do a week of clear liquid, then 2 weeks clear plus milk, pudding, yogurt. Then 2 to 4 weeks pureed only... so that puts me at like 2 months out Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App -
Baby food is disgusting. No need for it. Purée your own yummo food and/or eat soft food like yogurt and cottage cheese. Best first veggies to purée with some chicken broth is yellow squash or zucchini (don't forget a little salt and pepper). Yum yum.
