    Frustrated And Down

I joined this forum two years ago when I was going through my insurance approval process. I eventually decided not to get the surgery about one month before it was scheduled. I started working out really hard and dieting. I lost 80lbs and felt great.....now guess what....just like every other time in my life I gained it all back. I'm active, I hike, scuba dive, swim etc...I'm not a lazy person but I just can't keep the weight off. I'm so fed up and sad. So here I am starting over and think the band might be the answer. I am concerned about the long term affects of it. I'm not really posting to get answers but hoping to find people with similar feelings. I meet with Dr. Luttrell in two weeks and Dr. Wellborn after that.

    Help!

Hang in there....I felt the same feelings you are having I had a fill in May - lost 10lbs the first week and 1/2 then nothing for 6 weeks...asked my doc for a 1/2 cc (total of 8) and can tell a difference. Do I still have to stop myself from picking pu the bag of chocolate and devouring it - you bet I do...but thankfully with the lap band I CAN DO IT!!!! It helps me make better, healthier decisions....and for that I am forever thankful. Do I still get feelings of doubt? I sure do...but I also know that if I eat healthy and continue to take my daily walks that I CAN and WILL lose this weight I've carried all my life. You will find this forum to be very helpful and encouraging. So keep coming back here when you have questions/fears/anxieties...
  3. Hey guys and girls, I posted not that long ago regarding calories required at maintenance, I’m near 8 months PO and have reached my goal weight about 2 months ago (176 pounds), over the past 2 months I have continued to keep losing and now sitting around 152 pounds. I saw my dietician two days ago and she had requested that I up my caloric intake as it was sitting at 700-900 calories a day before. She done up a draft plan with items she wanted me to consume, some of the changes she made was changing my no fat milk to full fat milk. The last two days I’ve eased into it and have been consuming around 1300 calories a day which include 105 grams of protein, 90 grams of carbs and 60 grams of fat. Still losing fairly quick .5 or a pound in 3 days. Today I will up it to 1500 calories and see how I do, those of you hitting the maintenance stage. how long did it take trial and error to find that “sweet spot” where you didn’t gain nor lose? How many calories do you need to consume to be able to maintain? How long have you maintained for? How long PO were you when you had to move into a maintenance routine? I have been incorporating healthy fats as requested, what are some of your go to meals/snacks that are healthy to up the calories?

    I feel like a failure!!!

Hello my name is Jorge and I live in Queen Creek, Arizona. I am 32 years old and I weigh 499 lbs, thats if I havent gained all my weight back. I got my lap band surgery on May 12 2008 and I went down from 537 lbs to 499 the week before my surgery. Even after my surgery I was doing good with my preop and postop liquid and soft food diet stages, until about the 3rd or 4th week when I was able to eat regular foods now I am out of control. My food addiction has kicked in. I was supposed to go for my 1st fill on June 25 and I keep postponing because I am so embarrased to go and I feel like I have truly gained some of the weight back. Has this happened to anyone else??? I have alot of weight to loose...my doctor said that my ideal to loose would be 250-275 lbs...so I have a long way to go...and with this setback I am so embarrased to go to my doctors office and get weighed. I have even tried to do crash diets but they don't work!!! I am a carbs addict and I just feel like a total failure!!!...The whole reason for getting this surgery was to loose the weight and feel good physically and emotionally...right now I just feel crappy and emotionally like a total failure...Am I the only one that this happened to??? Is there anyone that has had this happen to as well??? Should I feel like this???

    11 days post op...

The surgeon actually cuts through your abdominal wall during the surgery. The muscles need to heal up, hence the prohibition on heavy lifting or straining after surgery. As the nerves start to heal and pain medications are out of your system you can imagine that there will be some pain. Around 2 weeks after my surgery, I was hurting pretty bad to lay in certain positions and sitting up or laying down. This was after 2 weeks with relatively no pain.
  6. Goodmorning all I just came back from Mexico at about 2 a.m. last night. I wanted to report to all of you how my band experience went since I relied on this website to inform and guide me through the process so here goes.... I have been looking on here for about 3 weeks, I have been thinking about this surgery for about 1-2 years. When I made the decision I went to my local surgean, He said he would do it but it would take 4 to 6 mos with all my pre op stuff, psych, diet, etc and it would cost 25K. Oh by the way my insurance would not cover it, big surprise. So I got on this site and learned about Mexico. After tons of time and hours of research I decided on Dr. Joya out of Puerta Viarta (Spelling?) I looked at everything and talked to lots of his patients, I called two weeks ago and Gerald (planner guy) got me started on the pass port(I did not have one) when I got my application(right now you can fly in to Mexico with the application, birth cert, and id) I called him Thursday he set me up for the following day to fly down, I had my surgery Friday afternoon and was on the beach by Sat. afternoon. I got home at 2 yesterday morning (my flight was canceled, I definatly recommend a straight shot...no lay overs). So what do I have to say? Well the hospital was great, very clean, nurses were very young and they do not speak very good english, be prepared for that. I like that they did not fuss over me, I recovered on my own and called if I needed them. I do think all the docs should wear name tags, they all looked alike to me and I would have liked to know who was who. I did have some discomfort after surgery, i should of read more on that, I laid flat, perhaps if I would have slept upright the pressure in my chest due to gas would have been lessoned but it passed in 24 hours. I would have enjoy Mexico one more day, it was beautiful and the hotel the doc puts you in is fabulous. I had a massage on Sat (after my release) that lasted 2 hours and costed 30 US $ Sunday morning I did a facial (that last 1 1/2, costing 35 $) Those were out of this world. The worse part of the trip was my flight home, the lay over sucked and the weather did not cooperate, all things out of Dr. Joyas hands. Would I recommend him, so far yes, the over all experience was good, I am doing well, so far. I will keep you posted. Good luck to you and if I can help ans your ? please ask, I think I remembered everything. Jme 231/224/150 Pre/Current/Goal 7/27 7/30 ?/??

    Night Sweats Anyone?

Yes, I did I actually posted this about 2 weeks ago. It has gone away now - I am 19 days out. that week it seemed that I run a low grade fever all week and when I took tylenol (Cut up) before bed I didn't get night sweats. It went away about 14 days out. Not fun! Especially if you live in a cold climate like I do.

    Hey There Gents!

Serious complications are extremely rare. If you have a competent care team and follow their instructions to the letter, the odds of anything going wrong are very slim. I know it's easy to be nervous about the unknown, but for those of us who've "been there, done that," we can definitely say that the first couple of weeks to a month are the hardest. After that, you just need to learn how to eat to please your new, smaller stomach, and enjoy all the "free" weight loss!
  9. I bought the Celebrate bari chewable vitamins for after surgery, and they made me nauseated. It didn't matter what time of day I took them, on an empty or with food in my stomach... I always got this nauseated feeling and increased saliva production. 3 times I vomited and I said enough was enough. I switched to One A Day Gummy vitamins. They aren't "bari" vitamins, but at least I'm getting something in and I feel better.

    ZERO Energy!

With the not being able to eat for a day, were you stressed?? I think that when I'm really stressed I can't eat. A friend of mine that's 3.5 years out told me that when your stressed your stomach contracts. And obviously with a normal sized stomach that's not an issue but with a 1/4 of what we used to have for us it is. I know there's no way to eliminate stress from your life, but it helped me a little knowing why I was struggling to get food down and keep it there. I felt like a baby for the first 3 weeks, liquid and puréed food diet and a 2 hour nap everyday lol. I started to perk up at 4 weeks post op also
  11. Happy Saturday everyone. I was online looking at Jamba Light smoothies and I feel that this is something that I can have, but I wanted to know if anyone else has tried smoothies during liquid phase. I hate this part, but I know it will be over soon - Katrina

    Hey There Gents!

Four weeks out ... CONGRATS!! Interesting question; I can't recall a time, looking back at a trip, vacation or event where I say to myself " now that was a a great meal" most of my meals come and go. I am no epicurean. I work for a French company and complained about the food the last time I was in Paris so short answer, FUEL, bring it. MY problem, when I have been hungry on the road, the drive through or office canteen means more to me for the savings in time.... That, will be my biggest challenge!! Thanks

    So mad at myself

Don't look back, it's behind you. Look forward -- with lots of excitement! I felt the same but took the right road -- the WLS road almost 3 months ago and couldn't be happier, don't remember feeling this "healthy, light and happy" ever!! And I've only lost 1/2 of my weight so far. Life is giving you this second chance at "making it right" so don't dwell on the past, just focus on your beautiful, happy and healthy, low weight future. Good Luck! Stay positive!!! It's all worth it!

    So mad at myself

I started at 392, hon. And I haven't been below 259.5 since I was 18 (I'm almost 36, so HALF MY LIFE)..... I also didn't think I'd get "too far over 300" but didn't have a scale, got pregnant, ate All The Pie.... And there you have it. I could barely waddle, had a hard time wiping my own butt (wouldn't admit that except to anonymous strangers, hah) I nudged a few pounds off between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2013, and my surgery got scheduled for 2/10/14 with a pre-surgery check in on 1/27 (also the day I started my liver reduction diet).... On 1/27 I weighed 375. I was fitting into a size 28, kind of. On 2/10 I weighed 355 (20 lbs in two weeks, but 1000 cals a day will do that)..... It's been exactly 6 months since I started the liver reduction diet ... And not every day has been perfect of course, there are plateaus and drops and more plateaus.... But today I weigh 257. That's 118 lbs in 6 months. My size-20 jeans are getting loose. I bought myself two very glamorous dresses in size 14-16 and they fit delightfully. I have gone from 3x t-shirts to XL or L. And still going. I have 87 pounds to go. My thighs sag like a shar-pei puppy now and you know what? I freakin flaunt it. My belly sags and if I lean forward and tighten my abs, my belly creases from top to bottom. Weird. My lower belly looks like a butt. And I have promised myself a bikini at 250.... Not a "flattering two-piece suit" no a freaking bikini because I have earned it. You can do this.... Surgery will HELP.... And you can step into a more aware, more mindful way of eating. Because now it matters!!! Now you are stepping into being SOMEONE, not hiding behind food anymore..... and you will LOVE the changes that happen in your body.

    Trying to help my mother

That sounds like far from enough fluids. Where was her surgery? Does she have a doctor nearby she can talk to? Dehydration can be dangerous. If your description is literal, that sounds like less than a cup of Water a day, that's very low. Please contact a doctor. She may need to go in and get IV fluids if her stomach is too swollen to hold enough. She should be getting 6-8 cups of Fluid a day. I know some struggle with that the first week, but it sounds like she's drastically below that. Agree with above - warm liquids can be better. Some also have an easier time getting water with crystal light rather than plain. Good job coming on here to ask for tips! I wish your mom the best.

    Trying to help my mother

I couldn't get fluids in either, next to none. She may need to be put on iv's until she can tolerate them. I was on iv's for 5 days. I am just over 3 weeks out and am not even close to what I need in water. I am lucky to get in 16-24oz but it is getting better. Dehydration is nothing to mess around with. See a doctor asap and best of luck to her.

    Pause in weight loss?!

    I'm stalled too...it's frustrating making me evaluate everything I'm doing...started Oct 17th 284...now 229...no change for 3 weeks.

    Pause in weight loss?!

I am with you guys. Every time I hit a stall, I wonder why and what can I do to keep it going. Lower carbs, increase exercise, change exercise, get more sleep, drink more water, eat more protein, track your intake. Pick some of these and see what works for you. I still can't figure it out either. And sometimes, I think it's just a waiting game. I wait and BAM! 5 lbs in one week. That was last week after a 3 week stall. Not my first 3 week stall either. On the bright side, I really do feel like even when my body isn't showing a loss on the scale, I am still loosing inches. Defies logic, but I'd swear it is happening. They also say the stall is the body's time to catch up with the weight loss, and that's how I try to look at it. Keep fighting the good fight and be patient grasshopper.

    Too much protein shake?

Thanks! It just sucks not being able to take anything at the moment. I do have prescriptions just can't take them 2 weeks out from surgery. I stopped caffeine a few weeks ago but it wasn't apart of my daily diet anyway. At the moment is the major diet decrease that's a triggering the migraines and I'm taking way too much Tylenol. This is why I'm doing 16 oz of shakes 4x a day but I'm worrying if that's too much. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Too much protein shake?

Hi, I also deal with migraines (hereditary). Have you just recently stopped caffeine or smoking? That could cause a migraine. I have a medication my PCP gave me years ago that has been working really. When I was in my tweens, twenties and early thirties I had them bad boys frequently. Mid thirties to my late forties (with meficatin) I might have one a month. For the medication to work at its best you need to take it at the onset of a migraine. Just a few months ago I was out and about when one hit. By the time I got home my migraine was in full swing. I suffered for a week. I went to my PCP and he gave me this shot and my migraine was gone, all gone in 15 min. I was so shocked that it worked the way doc said it would. I thought to myself "yeah right". I'm worried about having migraines the closer I get to surgery (stress is a trigger for me) & after when my body is going through the trauma from surgery. I plan to talk to my surgeon about being able to take my migraine pills in hospital? Just in case. If they persist I'd talk to you primary doc. Hope you feel better soon Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the BariatricPal App

    Too much protein shake?

Long time hereditary migraine sufferer here, too. My daughter actually was hospitalized with a status basilar migraine for a week when she was 16. Her neuro gave us some of the best advice, EVER. He said don't get hungry or thirsty, those are sure-fire migraine triggers. Also, if you drink caffeine, stopping it cold turkey will absolutely trigger it. Then there's all of the triggers that are specific to the individual - processed meat (nitrates), red wine, beer, aged cheese, weather, hormones, what have you. The pre-op diet wasn't too bad for me, but I'm convinced it's because my surgeon doesn't have a strict pre-op diet unless you already have liver problems. I was only asked to replace 2 meals a day with shakes, and make my 3rd meal and any Snacks low-fat and avoid processed grains and refined sugars, fruit was fine. I didn't do all of that as well as I should have, but it allowed me to lose a few pounds. I also cut out caffeine, but I did it VERY slowly. If you're drinking plenty of Water (100+ oz a day is what I consider well-hydrated), and you're drinking shakes regularly, then I would suspect that the lack of carbs in your diet is the culprit. You didn't say if you're pre-op or post-op. If you're pre-op then I would suggest talking to your surgeon's team and seeing if there's some way you can add back in some calories and complex carbs to help with the migraines. If you're post-op, then all I can offer is to gut through it. I get VERY ill in ketogenesis, and the first 3 weeks post-op I couldn't get out of keto without eating stuff with refined sugar in it. So I just kept up the Protein and water and pushed through. Also, something my daughter's neuro told us... whenever you have a headache (migraine or not) it starts an inflammatory cascade in your brain that will turn into migraines or turn into a string of migraines. He told us on any day we had a headache of any sort, when we went to bed that night to take 800mg of ibuprofen and whatever dose of Benadryl we were accustomed to (I can take high doses because I've taken it forever, my daughter usually just takes one OTC). Obviously, you'll want to check with your doctor before taking any meds like that, but I like to share that tidbit because it has helped us reduce the string of migraines thing, or stress/sinus headaches turning into migraines the next day. Good luck!!
  23. Hello Everyone, So far so good. As of today, I have lost a total of 50 pounds.......WOOOHOOO!!!! I got to tell ya, when you are on this journey, you have to Celebrate the small victories. As each week passes, you may find youself discouraged at times. You can't expect to lose 10 pounds or 8 pounds each week. Some times you lose 8 pounds, some times you lose 2 pounds. The point is that you are LOSING weight. I told myself that I will celebrate when I am in the 250's. Well, I did it! I was 260lbs last week, this week I am 258. I thought I would never see the 250's again, yet here I am. This inspires me to get in the gym and work harder than I have been already. For me, its not enough that I lose the weight, I also want to be healthy and look good in the process. I plan on putting on muscle. Believe you me, my wife appreciates that goal. Anyway......my advice to anyone who needs it is not to be discouraged if you only lose 1 or 2 pounds. Use it as motivation and try to work harder to continue to lose weight and achieve your goals. Celebrate your victories no matter how big or small. Good luck! Kenneth

One year out, not losing enough weight?

What is your Protein target? Mine is 70 - 90g per day. How are you eating during the day? My NUT has us eating 5 mini-meals a day every 3 - 4 hours with no eating in between. You should have a protein at every meal. Are you still following the 30-30 rule - stop drinking 30 minutes prior to eating, no drinking while eating, and no drinking 30 minutes after?
