    Have a Holly Jolly Christmas!

Lyrics by LittleBill, with apologies to Burl Ives. Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas, And skip drinking egg nog Cause if you do, I'm sure that you, Will have your weight loss bog. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas, Eat your Protein dontcha know? If you eat carbs, and things with lard, You're waistline's bound to grow! Ho, ho, the mistletoe, at least that stuff's fat free! You can indulge in it, without a calorie! So have a Holly Jolly Christmas, And behave yourself this year. Stay on your course, it could be worse, But better things are near!
  3. I was wondering if anybody has used www.wlsfa.org to help pay for your weight loss surgery or and plastic surgery? If you have a patient who needs financial help or are a patient looking for financial help to get weight loss surgery or reconstructive plastic surgery you might be eligible to apply for a grant from the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America. This is a little bit of a description of www.wlsfa.org: If you have been medically approved for weight loss surgery or reconstructive plastic surgery after weight loss surgery and have been denied surgery for financial reasons you might be eligible to apply for a grant from the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America. I was wondering if anybody had applied for a grant for weight loss surgery or reconstructive plastic surgery? I wanted to know if these people really do help financially! I am asking because I will need help paying for my reconstructive plastic surgery. Vanessa
  4. These first few weeks are really a rollercoaster but I'm sure 6 months from now this will be a blip. The weight will come off! After all of the preparation and excitment for surgery it is hard not to see progress right away but it is coming. The weight will come off!
  5. The weight will come off. Everyone is different, that being said the fact that you'll eat less will eventually cause you to lose weight.
  6. Hate to say it but stay off the scale. Some people can handle the ups and downs without it impacting their mood but it doesn't sound like that's you. If you follow instructions the weight will come off but be patient. I am a year and four months out and moments like these are a distant memory!

You're being vague when describing your food choices, but the mere mention of oyster crackers jumped out like a sore thumb. Many of us who are/were obese remain in perpetual fat-storage mode when we don't curtail our carb intake. For some, carbs stimulate a continual stream of insulin production, thereby preventing stored body fat from being burned. The end result is you don't lose weight. Here's another way of approaching the topic...carbs are the easiest, preferred fuel/energy source for your body. Therefore, why would your body expend precious effort metabolizing your stored body fat when it is getting all the energy it needs from any carbs you may be feeding it? My advice is to curtail your carb intake ASAP. Even a few oyster crackers need to go. Good luck to you.

  10. Hi mikee, I read your profile, you and I are very close in age and height. Im almost 56 and im 5' 3, and 160 lbs. As I calmly explained to my lap band surgeon 2 weeks ago during a 6 mo checkup," I think im done losing weight as ive been at this weight for a year now. I would love to get to 140 lbs, but im 55, had a child and at the end of menopause, so im not expecting to have my teenage body back, because things have changed !" He calmly looked at me and said " You can do this if you really want to, just cut back a few more calories and exersize a bit more! " I love him to death, but seriously ? Did you not hear my reasons ? Anyhooooooo.......... I think you have to listen to your Dr, but just as important, listen to YOUR body ! You' ll know when your weight is "right"!

    When to stop!!!

Lots of people (most people?) don't lose once they go back on solid food, until they get their first fill. I was banded 10/10 and lost 15 pounds over the next three weeks, then went on solids and didn't lose anything more until my first fill November 29. I've lost 7 pounds since then, in less than 2 weeks. Even when I am losing weight, I don't do it steadily. I stay at a weight for a week, then drop 5 pounds overnight. Don't get discouraged; just stay on track and it will come off.

    When to stop!!!

I was banded on 10/3 and lost quickly right after surgery. I just had my second fill on 12/13 and each time I feel restriction for a few days and then somewhat back to the way I felt before the fill. I have just decided if I want to see weight loss I have to act as if the band is working for me. I have been working through the hunger and getting results. My trick .... protein protein protein. It helps to get full faster and stay full longer.

    Pouch reset?

Echoing the "reset isn't real", and definitely co-signing on the calories. Here's a link to calorie calculators for loss and maintenance - pop in your stats and it gives you calorie guides. Super easy. Weight loss absolutely slows to a crawl as you reach goal, but staying in a deficit works, even if it's slow. I also wanted a "buffer" for the 3-year gain-back scenario, and I'm now ten kilos past my goal, which was what I was after. This whole process is just ongoing calorie adjustment and patience.

    From There to Here

I've been thinking about Weight Loss Surgery for a long time, but could not seriously pursue it until my husband concurred, which was last fall. We attended an informational seminar in Palm Springs CA over the winter and began looking for a surgeon then. We were in CA for the winter, but moving to WA state at the end of April. My medical insurance is Medicare/Tricare for Life, so I had to use a "Center of Excellence". I was able to make an appointment with Dr. Jeffrey Hunter at Virginia Mason Clinic in Federal Way WA. We met with him on May 3, 2007 and he thoroughly discussed the pros and cons of both bypass and lapband surgery. He told me that he would want me to lose 10% of my body weight prior to surgery. I weighed in at 325 that day. I started a 1000-1200 calorie diet the next day. I lost about 2 lb. a week for the first three weeks. Then the weight loss stalled and so did my enthusiasm. In a short time, I had regained the 7 lb. I was supposed to have a second appointment with Dr. Hunter in early June, but his nurse, Stephen called me early that week and told me that I didn't need to come in until I'd lost the weight. So the next day I started on a 350-500 calorie diet. Its been three weeks and I've now lost 20 lb. Last week, after several phone calls to report my weight loss thus far, Stephen called me back with a surgery date of July 20. I will have to go in about 10 days prior to that for pre-op appointments with Dr. Hunter, the dietician and the anesthesia department. :ranger:

  16. My step mom had this done about 35 years ago due to stomach ulcers. I don't think it is as small as we are all getting, but a sleeve. She did not NEED to lose weight, but did and has kept it off all these years. Never any problems that I know of, she is 83 yrs old.

    Seriously....

I know that I didn't put the weight on over night...I guess I just thought that I would see more progress at this point.

    Advice that makes you crazy.

The people who offer such insightful weight loss advise to my obesity (and only short term success with dieting): "You can just lose weight if all you did was eat less and exercise." Thank you Captain Obvious. I can also fly if I just grew a pair of wings or win Powerball if I only picked the winning numbers. Let me know if Sears is having a sale on wood chippers this week.

    Gym Routine Exercise

Cardio and weight training are a perfect combo but they don't have much impact on skin. They do make you look awesome in clothes though! To the OP, I did strength training 3 days a week and cardio 2 (jogging ) days a week the first year. Now I still do the weights 3 days a week but mix it up the other days with yoga, bootcamp, etc.

    Gym Routine Exercise

I don't do a lot of weight training, but I do a lot of running and cross training. So I will run 3-4 days/week, then on the other days I do some form of cross training. Anything from a group exercise class to the elliptical or stationary bike, etc. The cross training helps with endurance and flexibility which in turn helps my running. :-) With all that said, my biggest recommendation is just find something you LOVE. I don't think it matters as much what it is, as much as it matters that you find something that you enjoy that you can commit to.

    What was I Thinking?

Unfortunately until someone experiences having this done, they won't know exactly what this feels like or how difficult it really is to lose the amount of weight we have to lose. I promise you that over the next 7 days you will start to feel better. Moving around does help a lot. Our bodies heal at different paces but you should be doing better soon. I still can't say that I would do it over again, but every day I am better with the changes, the more I am get closer to that day when I will say, absolutely...would do it over again. My problem is that I have lost over 75 pounds the conventional way at least 15 times but then gained it back when I started eating again. So until I get to 100 pounds down, I really can't say it's worth it. But it will and I will and then we can celebrate our healthiness.

    Holiday Goodies At Work

I can totally relate to that! A co-worker brought me a dozen beautiful and very yummy Cookies today. They are gone. Sweets go down so easy for me. Going forward....... I am NOT going to eat anymore treats!!! I am going to get back on track so that I do not continue to gain over the Christmas holiday. WLS is by no means the easy way out. We still have to work very hard to lose and maintain our weight. I do NOT want to be that fat person again!!!
  23. Which surgery are you having? Glad you passed the psych eval... I am one of them shrink types and felt like I had fooled them, too! About the doubt... normal for most of us. For me, after decades of failure, it is unreal to even contemplate that I could lose this weight. But, I did. Now that the rapid loss period is over for me, I am facing the reality of having to be very careful. But, the good news is that my pouch is small, I literally can't overeat. The bypass part of the surgery is there always, helping cut nutrient absorbing, and honestly, it is easier to avoid weight gain and with careful eating and good activity, the pounds are still coming off. I still am shocked when I look in the mirror or see myself in a window reflection... but I deserve this new body.

Feeling Unqualified or Ill-Prepared for Surgery

People mean well - it's just hard to see that designation on certain browsers. I felt the same way as the OP and really can't hardly believe it even as the weight is coming off. I think you're completely normal!
