  1. 35 lbs in four months is pretty good. You can't expect to lose as much as the people on "my 600 lb life" unless you start out weighing 600 lbs. I think I lost only a little more than that at that point, and my surgery center thinks I'm doing great! Also... you may need to eat more to get the weight to drop. By 4 months out I was eating 800-1200 calories a day. I still 5 months out) eat a half cup or less of food, but I try to make that full of protein and veggies. What did your surgery center say? Do they think you're not losing fast enough? Also, I totally feel your pain on the injuries. I was doing great with exercising but then I got tendinitis in both my arm and knee, so I was told to rest for a month. It SUCKS!

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Hey I dont have a thyroid problem nor do I know much about it but the fatty liver thing is quite common for obese people. Fortunately the liver recovers incredibly well and fast so that the more you lose and eat healthy the better it will get! I’m so jealous you’re so close to your goal weight! Thats amazing!!! I’m literally half way. 80lbs down, 80lbs more to go!

Thank you! Yeah, I don't know if I had screwed up my metabolism or what...but I was workin my tail off and getting nowhere! Then I would give up, eat whatever I wanted for a week, gain another 10 pounds, and start the cycle all over again. Good luck with your surgery! You will be amazed at how quick it comes off! Final Choice

I was in a similar boat where my surgeon told me that either RNY or VSG would be fine and left it up to me. I considered the pros/cons and worried about the effects of RNY. I ultimately went with RNY because I wanted the surgery that gave me the best chance to lose the most weight. If you know you will be self-accountable for your Vitamins, you have already drastically reduced the chances of long-term bad effects. Obviously, there are no guarantees that everything will turn out OK (and that weighed on my mind when I was on the gurney, waiting for my surgery to start). But long-term complications are relatively rare in people who are committed to taking their vitamins, hitting their Protein goals, etc. I am very happy with it. I am 41 and am in the best health/shape/weight I have been since college (it has been at least 20 years since my weight was so low).

Amazing progress! Good job! So funny you said that about the CrossFit workouts! I’m now 7 1/2 months in pre-op. Stepped it up to CrossFit 4-5 days a week from 3 and since I hit the 10% loss I’ve gone nowhere and even gained about 5 pounds back! I can’t figure it out. Eat more, eat less, who knows! Gives me hope that surgery really will help!
  6. Hello all, I just discover this forum, it is great to have a group of people sharing experiences, I found that no matter how much I thought I read about the surgery, it is different when you are living it. I had my surgery on 2/3/22 my weight was 253 I was loosing weight fast but yesterday and today I slowed down, I am 235 today but not complaining. I am having issues drinking the recommended amount of water and since today I can have non clear liquids, I will have some oatmeal for breakfast, I am excited, the complication so far is that maybe one of the medicines gave me an allergy my face was all red and it was painful but that is going away now, I started working from home yesterday and sitting for long periods hurts my incisions I have to remember to stand up more often, but that was one of the contributing factors to my weigh. Good luck to all of you who are going trough this, a friend of mine who had the same surgery keeps reminding me that it will get better soon.
  7. I had RNY surgery in 2005. Once I was able to eat soft foods, I threw up a few times. 1st was getting used to eating eggs. The next few times was my brain, mouth and stomach not adhering to the fact that my stomach was small (eating too much) and eating too fast. Once I retrained my brain, it has been fine. I might get the dumps every once in awhile but that's because I ate some ice cream or something very sweet. Don't take too much heed on people who have the horror stories. They are usually the ones not following the rules and have not accepted the reason they gained weight in the 1st place. You will do great, make the right food choices and decide how to proceed with your weight loss journey.

    Comorbidities

I thought the same when I went for my first consult last March and fully intended to be self-pay. My BMI was also 37 and I have Anthem BCBS. But my center encouraged submitting to insurance based on my high blood pressure and blood work that came back pre-diabetes. Several weeks later, I was approved. Shocked, but very happy to have saved $15K+. It is worth submitting to insurance...you have nothing to lose as you are already prepared to be self-pay and a lot to gain. Good Luck!

    Post op no appetite

It's a good thing that your hunger sense is gone right now. This is your opportunity to lose the maximum amount of weight. It'll come back later, so take advantage of this time now.
  10. Everyone is different, so there's always a chance you'll be one of the unfortunate ones to have complications (which are pretty rare for weight loss surgery), and you have to weigh that risk against the benefits of the surgery. I will say, though, that this was one of my biggest fears that made me hold off on WLS for years, but I am a year and a half out from gastric bypass and have not vomited even once since surgery.

    Post op no appetite

it's common to lose your sense of hunger after surgery - but it usually comes back sometime within the first year. Mine came back at five months out. I didn't necessarily struggle to eat, but I had zero interest in food and had to REMIND myself to eat. Honestly, I wish my hunger had never come back. It was so much easier to lose weight when I didn't give a flip about food! But if yours is causing pain or something, I'd let your clinic know - could be something else going on. Or if not, it'll just give you peace of mind.

    Secret

That you got you gall bladder removed. Same scars, same recovery, same-ish post op diet, and can be used to explain why you are cutting out fat and grease from your diet, and why you are losing so much weight. Or say you have a benign tumour in your stomach that is being removed, along with part of your stomach? …or say nothing at all ❤️

    Secret

You are not alone in wanting to keep it a secret. I kept it private as well. The only person that knows is my husband. I've been kind of a hermit during Covid, so that helped because I wasn't going out much to begin with. I did tell family and friends that I had adopted a healthier eating lifestyle. That way, they won't be too surprised when they see me....well they will be because I've lost weight, but they will assume it's the new, healthier eating habits, which is not a total lie. As far as work, I simply said I was getting a procedure done, and I would be back in approximately four weeks. I work from home, so they won't see me anyway.... Good Luck to you! ♥

    Peleton App

If you use the app with the peloton bike or treadmill it keeps track of your workout metrics and heart rate so you can see if you’re gaining strength. You can also meet up on the bike with your friends that have bikes and cheer each other on. It’s pretty fun, but I’ve suspended my app because I started getting a pain in my knee when I rode and my favorite instructor left.

    13 Days post op

I’m going to be honest and tell you I had bypass and almost feel no restriction. I measured and weighed everything to make sure I was not overeating. At 4 months I listened to my body very very quietly and consistently to learn my new signals. If I hiccup or sneeze I have gone too far. It’s when I hear or feel a gentle rumble sensation that is the just right spot. I can miss it easily so to keep loosing weight I still have to portion and measure everything. I know I can maintain when I get to my goal, because I can listen. Really though, no restriction at 6 months, I can eat half a pizza easily and still gain weight. The weight loss truly comes from hard work only. I do feel like I have regained a sense of signals from my body. My old satisfied signal came at 45 minutes. Now it’s 20-35 minutes and I can sense it easier.

    Insurance Through Postop

Amazing! So good to hear you're happy at your weight. I'd really hold on to that feeling ... pushing down below a defensible weight could set the whole hunger-->overeating cycle in motion again. I mean, it may not, but just saying. There's so much value in being happy with a weight

    Insurance Through Postop

Hey felt like checking in because I am now 1 year 3 months past surgery, and I weighed exactly 165 this morning, still at my goal weight. Maintenance has been going really well, still considering another 15 lbs but I’m also happy at this weight. Still loving life as a “normal weight” person.

    Peleton App

So I have been exercising for some time now on a treadmill and rowing machine in my basement. I finally decided that I wanted to try cycling as well. I bought a $499 Eschelon bike from Walmart and downloaded the Peleton app to my tablet. I was surprised by how many non biking classes they have. I followed one today on my treadmill and it was a great workout. They also have a lot of classes for body weight and exercising without equipment. Just my two cents that it’s worth checking out even if you aren’t going to drop thousands on a special bike.

  20. Im over 3 years out and im still cold. Not as frozen popsicle as i was was the first year and a half (man, I remember walking down the frozen food aisle at the grocery and thinking i was going to freeze to death) but still colder than everyone else around me (right now im wearing a hoodie and wool socks and Mr is wearing shorts and is shirtless…and no he is not overweight by any means). I stopped rapid weight loss a long time ago, so I attribute this to just an all around less insulation issue (i.e., fat)

    Periods (women only please)

I would be hesitant to use the implants. They tend to be associated with weight gain, more than the pill. My surgery center didn't say I would have to use additional BC, but I don't have sex, so maybe they didn't discuss it? I know a lot of people have used Mirena (IUD) after surgery and done well with it. I also used to take BCP continuous cycling because I was sooooo miserable when I had my period. I hadn't had a period in over a decade going into surgery. They told me to stop the pill to reduce the risk of clots. I stopped 6 weeks before surgery. I am now 5 months out from surgery and I STILL haven't had a period despite being off birth control entirely. (and thank you @pintsizedmallrat. I identify as gender fluid and that is one of the reasons I worked so hard not to get periods.)
  22. The 30 grams things came out of body builders (of which I am definitely not one). In terms of muscle-building and muscle-retention, anything more than 30 grams at a time probably isn't going to have a much bigger impact than 30. But that protein is used for many purposes, including amino acids and any excess protein is broken down into energy. At least for me, its a good source of energy. If I drink the Chike shake at 7:30-8am, I'm not hungry until noon. And I routinely get >100g of protein throughout the day. I am losing weight (135 pounds as I approach my six month anniversary), my doc loves my bloodwork and I have great energy, so if it ain't broke, I'm not going to fix it. I am not going to make perfect the enemy of the good.
  23. Interesting. All I know is that Since about 2 months past my surgery I stopped being so dang hot all the time and sweating like crazy. Summer was coming to a close so I wasn't really sure if it was my imagination or real and didn't have time to really test it out. Guess I'll know for sure this Summer. LOL But doing things around the house that normally made me hot and sweat regardless of the time of year like cooking, cleaning, carrying anything of weight, etc. would have me drenched in sweat and would take me forever to cool down from. Now, NOPE! Doesn't happen any longer. We also always sleep with two fans on all year long and since surgery I find myself cold doing that and have gone from sleeping in underwear only to sleeping in fuzzy long pants and long sleeve shirts. LOL NOT complaining though cause I can always do things to easily get warm but it was next to impossible to cool down when I was always hot. Having said all that, my own coldness hasn't stopped since it started even though I've been stalled since Oct 25th. Well, I should say I was stalled since then, then I contacted my nutritionist in December some time and made some adjustments and then the scale finally moved again and I have since lost an additional 4-5 lbs but yeah, not sure that logic/theory applies to me as my stall seems to be constant (not actually losing weight or inches) and yet I remain cold all the time. I just finished converting a good size shed, that was sitting empty doing nothing, into a gym. That had occupied all of my time and energy all of January and exercise went to the wayside. So starting Monday I plan on getting back on track with my exercise and HOPEFULLY then the weight will start dropping regularly again.
  24. I haven't noticed this, but I have to say that contrary to most people, I have actually been LESS cold than I used to be prior to surgery. I attribute this to the fact that I am cold mostly when sedentary, and I was more sedentary prior to preparing for surgery. Now that I'm more active, I don't feel cold all the time. I used to always be cold, and now I'm comfortable more of the time. One thing for me is that I take medication that can cause difficulties with thermoregulation. I used to be bothered by both heat and cold, and I haven't noticed this as much. I'm still taking the same medication at the same dose, so maybe losing weight has helped me thermoregulate? I know that if I start being cold (usually when sitting at my desk working) I feel better if I get up and start moving. Sometimes, I take that cue as a motivator to get on the treadmill. Othertimes... I just crawl into bed.

    Gastric sleeve

Uhhh... several of us, including me, said that regret is common. Also, even if you have PCOS, they are not going to do a bariatric surgery if you are already at a healthy weight.
