  1. I've learned not be pay attention to the scale as much as I was. I might not be losing as much as I was right after the surgery, but I am losing inches and it shows. Finding an exercise program that fits YOU is the most important thing. I hate walking the dogs in this heat so I joined a gym that is between work and home. I stop on the way home from work 1-2 times a week and on Saturday and Sunday I am at the gym at 7AM...get it over with ASAP! I started out with the basic Planet Fitness membership for just $10 a month but upgraded to $20 a month and now I can go to any one in any city, plus I can tan if I want. Some say I have become a gym groupie. Truthfully? I HATE working out but I made a commitment to myself to do everything the doctor told me to do and I am doing that, whether I like it or not. The reason I got into this weight mess is because I lied to everyone and myself about what I was and wasn't doing to lose weight. Be honest with yourself and take control. It isn't easy but the benefits are worth it.

    Waiting and Wishing

Yes, likely you will need to complete a few dr appointments, sleep study, psych evaluation, nutritionist, along with the requirements that your personal doc provide a letter of medical necessity. I would ask them to start scheduleing these appointments while you wait. My insurance (blue cross blue sheild of ma) doesn't even want to know about you until you have fulfilled all those requirements. Then and only then can it be submitted for approval. My approval came in a couple days and then I had to wait about 14 days (10 days of pre op diet included) before my surgery was scheduled. Read read read. Wrap your mind around the restrictions. Like, many folk can't eat bread, meats (like steak or pork), Pasta, rice etc. Some people can, but if you are one that can't, don't wait until you find that out to wrap your mind around it. Assume you can't, then if you can you will get a happy surprise. Start evaluating your eating habits. Do you graze? Why? Do you binge? Why? Start thinking about life being banded. Some of these things, while talked about all the time on this website come as a big surprise. Educate yourself during this waiting time and start to think of life being banded. It will make your journey that much more positive!! Good luck!!

    It zipped...NSV

Oh Tiff-you are so way past a 16. I bet you'll be shocked with how small you go with your new clothes...I can't wait to hear all about your NSV's after tomorrow's trip. You are doing such a great job and will be at goal in no time and then have to buy even smaller clothes. Itstime-I have never been in a 10 in my whole life. By the time I left the girl's husky clothes, I remember going right to a woman's 14. There might have been sizes between there, but I was in upper elementary/middle school and honestly don't remember this size. I know I was a 16 by my freshman year in HS, got to a 12/14 my sophomore year and then back to 16 and so on. I also know this must be a 10 that runs super large, but hey, I'll take it.

Ten years with the Lap Band

Congratulations to you! 10 years how amazing! I can't imagine how great you feel 10 years later. Wow...
  5. Hi. I was just banded on Nov. 5th. Even though I was making big changes.. stopped drinking Diet Coke, took smaller bites, tried to watch what I was eating, I also felt a need to eat. We had several last meals. Steak one night, ribs another, then I had some sweets, etc. I know exactly how you are feeling. Just remember that after the splurge to watch it the next day. I only had to do a liquid diet for 1 week before surgery. I did end up losing 17 lbs before I had surgery. Since Monday I've dropped another 10!! Of course a week of Clear liquids will do that to a person. Good luck and enjoy your journey. It does get easier and after you are banded you don't have a choice, but to follow the plan.
  6. My date is December 19, 2016 and I'm nervous and excited all at the same time. I am scheduled for the sleeve and am in Louisiana. Would love someone to share my journey with! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-P907A using the BariatricPal App My date as well is december 19th!
  7. Hi everyone, My name is Amy. I had the band on 8/24/10, I lost almost 50 pounds with the band but never reached my goal because I had a lot of problems. I kept having to have fluid put in and out, I put up with reflux WAY TOO LONG because I didn't want more fluid removed because I was gaining weight. I ended up with an esophageal ulcer and became anemic from it. I had all the fluid removed in early 2017. I am almost back to my pre-surgery weight of 256. I am very unhappy with my weight and it is making me depressed. My insurance recently approved a conversion from band to bypass. I need to wait to build up some time off at work so I am looking at sometime early next year for surgery. Having the surgery makes me nervous but reading your posts here are helpful.
  8. I wish you luck as well. I hope that everything goes well. My doctor said it will be his intention to remove my band and then proceed with the sleeve but he will not know for certain until he open me up. I would love to have on surgery but if I have to wait then I will. This is a better time than ever to practice patience. Please keep me posted if you ended up with one surgery after 10 years of having the band. Thanks

    Need a Pep Talk

My story is a long one, but if you want to read it on my blog liquid put into my band as of late. My doctor is super booked and its seems I can never get in and I am working constantly (paralegal). So without hardly any restriction, I packed on 25lbs. Now, through vigorous exercise and extreme dieting (minimal calories, veggies, chicken, eggs, repeat) I have lost 10 lbs of that. I have not been feeling myself lately. I hate the way I look and am terrified of gaining weight back. I seem to have gained it all right in my abdominal region, which makes it so many things do not fit correctly at all. My confidence is low, and I am so sick of dieting I could harpoon something. I know the end result will be worth it, and I need to go back in and get a fill, but I am struggling so hard right now. I would do anything to get down past 160 (my lowest) and hit 150 (my original pre-op goal) and I want to be 140 (over the moon, never going to happen goal). I feel hungry all the time. I eat good, healthy veggies, I cut out cheese, I make very good choices because the band taught me that, however, my willpower right now is struggling and I want to see lower numbers on that scale. Any tips or tricks you guys have to maximize your weight loss would be phenomenal right now. I need a pep talk
  10. Thanks. I went to my GP to discuss my sugar problems. He's going to do another GTT. When I have my 5 hour test 19 years ago, they took me to the hospital in an ambulance. I'm really dreading the test next Fri. Ever since I started exercising, I'm having trouble again with my hypo. Doc said I need to eat more carbs. I'm not so sure about that.
  11. I have just scheduled my surgery for March 10th. I am very excited but also VERY nervous. I had a lapband for 5 years and lost to goal, but always had issues with things getting stuck, throwing up, and then finally a stomach infection that led to removal. This has been about 6 months ago, and I have gained back almost all of my weight. Until my appointment last week, when I went with the intention of getting another band, I had never even heard of the sleeve, but my Dr. said he thought in the long run I would like it much better, and would have less complications. Just a couple of questions... With the staples, how long are you at risk of leaks? Will the stomach tissue reconnect, or will the staples always be what is holding it together? Has anyone else been from band to sleeve??? How many days on average hospital stay?? I am 1 1/2 hours from my Dr..thought about staying in a nearby hotel the day after release...JUST in case any problems. Any advice would be wonderful.
  12. I stalled at 3 weeks for a week and then lost 10 then stalled again and its been over a week...on week 6 now.

weight loss after band to sleeve

I have also heard that for some, they believe the band causes people to be "slow losers" but I honestly think that everyone loses at their own pace, it just gets blamed on the band in a revision patient. I have spoken to so many revision sleevers and it seems to be about the same ratio of fast to slow losers as "virgin" sleevers. And going back to what CowgirlJane said, I think ANY weight loss surgery is going to be what you make it. Yes, the band was a flawed system that made it so much harder to eat the healthy foods... however, I know for me personally, there came a point with my band that I gave up trying to find my "sweet spot" and resorted to sliders. I had been through so many fill adjustments that my patience and, as a self pay, money, were running thin. I resorted to sliders to get through and it was a very easy and familiar way of eating, so I stuck with it, instead of continuing to try and get the most out of my band. Do I think that everyone can be successful with the band if they just try harder? No, of course not (myself included), and I don't think anyone should be expected to go through the insane number of adjustments it would likely take to actually find a "sweet spot" for a lot of us. But, I do agree with Jane that part of the success with the sleeve, at least for me, will really come from evaluating where I made poor choices with the band. And honestly, in a lot of ways, I am thankful for my last 10 years with the band... as much of a mess as it was, I feel like it's put me in a good place mentally to adjust to a sleeve and be committed to the program I need for long term success!!

I cannot decide if I should do this or not

I'm 10 days post op. I'll be honest, I didn't expect the pain to be this painful. It gets better everyday but emotionally, I'm sick of being weak from the surgery. It's a huge & life changing decision only you can decide for yourself. Even though I'm sort of emotionally drained, I've already lost 20 lbs since the liquid pre-op diet. I could never lose even that much weight before. If I could, I wouldn't have gotten the surgery. But in your condition, this will be a positive result for you since you need to lose weight. Ask yourself can you do it on your own by sticking to a strict diet or am I willing to go to the extreme with surgery? Complications are low according to statistics I've read. My hospital has 0 fatalities with weight loss surgery. Height 5'0" Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs. Surgery date: 2/13/17 Goal: - 71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs). Current weight: 194.4 lbs My profile picture is not me. It's my "FitSpiration" body.

    considering getting banded, but....

For me, I was looking for the positive...not the negative. I knew in my gut that this is what was best for me and I stuck with it. I knew that the band was a tool and I have treated it as such, as soon as I feel at all loose, I schedule a fill. I work out and only have Water. I was banded on 12/12 and am down 70 pounds. I only have 27 more to get to my goal of 130. If you want it bad enough, you bust your tail and you will get it! I started with a size 22 pant and am wearing 10/12 now. In 6 months...it is pretty remarkable!
  16. Get back on track tomorrow. do a day of liquids. Drink a Protein Drink every 3 hrs. starting at 8am and finishing at 8pm. Alternate every three hours with first drink being either a shake like Atkins with no more than 200 calories and low carb. And the second one being one with no carbs and under 150 calories. No more than 10 oz each. I alternate with Atkins shake and a glass (1/2 bottle) of Isopure CLEAR premixed Protein. This will help get rid of the cravings. You need to detox those carbs out or you will continue to crave them. If you can do this two days, even better. And write all this down, calories and protein. Nothing fancy is needed just jot it down every day on a note pad. After the day of liquids, you must start to follow the band rules, protein first then veggies, stay away from other carbs (other than veggies) for the rest of the week. You've done well, don't throw it all away now. You can get back on track. We are addicts and fighting this addiction. Just like other addicts detox, you need to, also.

I also started going to Curves right away too and started walking. You go ahead and lose as much as you want it all makes life so much nicer!!!! happy you are on the road to Bandster land!

    Nutritionist or Psychologist

I agree with you 100%. For me I realized at about 10 months post op that the issue wasn't "not knowing what foods to eat" to be successful, but was more "why do I sabotage myself". So, I sought out a therapist who specialized in eating disorders and, besides the surgery itself, that was the single best decision I've made for myself in my life. I've been going weekly for 3 years now and it's made all the difference in keeping the weight off, but also in changing the war that is constantly going on in my head with food.

    having a rough day

I feel the same way. I have lost 20 since12/19 when I was banded. I have had 3 fills and I'm always still hungry and I gained 2 lbs. I don't know what to do? I need to get to the sweet spot so I can really loose.
  23. And as you heard already, my post-operation stay was different, although I still am peeved I didn't get to meet And share experiences with others there I just got accept that they THOUGHT they were treating ME right. I used my stuffed bunny, Roux N.Rabbit, my biotene, chap stick, I have a bad habit, well I have a bunch, when I get nervous I chew my lips and make, them sore. Phone charging cord; I bought a 10 foot one at Staples , Tomkitten thought it was a waste of 💰 but I found it valuable. Took 2 cell phones, one pings off of Verizon, the other off of AT&T. Both worked , the second a little better, Columbus was a Bell tiwn, after all, so the most per capita towers, but the Verizon did ok, took it because it has unlimited data and. my phone minutes keep rolling over each month if I don't use, them all. But the AT&T runs off of Marshmallow, a higher Android system. Pays your money, makes your choice. Since I never got to walk in the hall, slippers , jammie pants and robe were useless. But it was what it was, and Moving On, don't bemoan or wail, does no one any good.. Life is all good, well except my durned structure, THAT I can do without, fervently, hope Dr Noria can fix it, getting tired of these every other Friday EGJ, Second try may be the Money Winner!👈😷👉
