High Protein Diet = Diarrhea?
Kassie B. replied to Kassie B.'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks, everyone... I'm not eating a lot of lettuce, so I know it's not that... I had read that some people react to an abrupt change in diet (adding a lot of protein suddenly) could cause tummy uproars, but was of the impression it'd be constipation like you guys have said, not the other... I spoke with my PCM today about it and she said that everyone's different, but to give it a week or two and see if it persists... I've been fine yesterday and today, so... here's hoping I've already adjusted. Thanks for all the input! -
Gastric Sleeve Surgery Tomorrow Morning At 8:00am
bkeel posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am having my sleeve surgery tomorrow morning. I'm getting so nervous and have some second thoughts. But I know it is the right thing for me and my family. I have a 13 month old son and I want to around for a long time for him and my family. Had a friend who had the surgery two weeks ago and she had some complications. So I'm starting to freak out, been on a liquid diet for last week. Lost some weight but wasn't fun not eating a Christmas meal with rest of my family. My first time on this forum. Looking for some people on here and might can give me some tips on what to expect from surgery. My surgeon is Dr. Barker in Dallas, I heard he was one of the best so I do trust him. This is a life changing event, my life will never be same. Thanks to anyone who can share their experiences or offer help for me. -
I am seriously contemplating the lap band, and am starting my research. Been reading this forum for a few weeks, and I don't think anything has impressed me more. Talk about a built-in support system. I have, of course concerns about the band and if its right for me. I was diagnosed as a diabetic 6 years ago, managed to loose a little weight, and by managing my foods, got off my diabetes meds within the first year. Over time, I lost some weight, about 60 lbs, and kept if off thru never ending hard work. I just finished fighting uterine cancer with the usual nightmare treatments, and have all clear from doctors, and w/an excellent prognosis. Also, fighting the cancer, I've lost more weight, bringing me down to 215ish. I hope I can qualify for the band. However, because of the cancer process, I lost my way with managing my diabetes, and am back on meds. Probably because of having to keep so many balls in the air during the entire radiation/chemo treatments, I am finding harder than ever to keep the weight off, and manage my sugar levels. I am hungry, ravenishly hungry every moment of every day. I am hoping the band would work with me, in keeping my appetite to a reasonable level. Even when I was managing the diabetes I was always frantically hungry. I am always on the edge of a full blown binge just because I am so hungry all the time. So I guess I am most curious about hunger levels, and if having the surgery would end the constant fretting about diabetes...a little peace w/my desire to eat would be welcome about now. any and all comments would be most helpful. Thank you...

1 week away from surgery, thoughts on pre-op diet
soflatechie posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So my surgery is on the 20th, one week away. I was told by my nutritionist that the pre-op diet was something I would look back on as the hardest part. I have been on it for 5 days now, and...well...it is not that bad. My pre-op diet is a liquid diet - protien shakes and Clear liquids only. The first day was a nightmare and I was seriously questioning this whole surgery thing. But as time has gone by, the shakes I chose (premier protein) really fill me up and clear chicken broth in the evening keeps me from cheating. It is really weird because for me not to cheat and eat something in the evening is tough. I guess the realization that I need this for surgery is keeping me on track. Has anyone else had that experience? Thinking the pre-op diet was gonna do you in and being surprised? Just want to get this over with though and get to the other side... -
1 week away from surgery, thoughts on pre-op diet
Noor1969 replied to soflatechie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, do I feel silly. I started the preop diet one week ago and I was convinced that it was going to be the worst thing I will ever have to go through in my life. Now it's one week later and I barely feel hungry. The first three days were hard with detox headaches and head hunger but they went away. I'm feeling kinda disappointed as I've only lost 5 pounds. I don't know if that's good or whether I should have lost more by now. I am actually consuming less than what my surgeon is allowing me to eat. I'm just not hungry! I'm due to be sleeved this week and like you I just want the experience to be over with. But at least I'm not worried about the preop stuff anymore! -
I went in for a slight un-fill because I have not been able to eat hardly any solid food and if I do it is only a few bites. The radiologist had me drink the barium and looked at me under floro before he took any out and said, "You look like you are right where you are suppose to be" "This is where most people want to be at in terms of restriction". I felt like a weany... My first fill was 1.cc and I went in two weeks ago for .6cc making a total of 1.6cc. It was just too tight, thats all there is to it. He removed .1cc and showed it to me. He than had me drink again to see if the barium went down any easier and said it did. I have read that people react different to different fills. He was stereotyping me for sure. He also up that darn needle in and kept moving it around (after it was in) trying to get it in the middle of the port. I would have to get a obsessive compulsive doc! I am bruised and have a big looking hole on my tummy. I was able to eat 1/2c taco Soup on the way home. I will see over the weekend how I do. The doc told me that the whole idea was to cut down on my eatting. I said, "Yes, but not to starve to death"! I told him I had zero energy to do any exercise and had to eat icecream to get 1000 cal per day in me..... GEEZE The good news is that my un-fill was FREE. The policy is you can come back within two weeks for an up or down fill.... and they are cheap too.... YIPPIE I hope I don't have to go back in there for a long, long, long time....

Post op diet - need suggestions
Bronxgal replied to beachlover09's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I'm new to this site, however, I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and I'm going crazy. Can anyone give me ideas on meals once I start puree. Also during the puree stage is it safe to eat egg salad, tuna, oatmeal, or grits. I am open for any suggestions -
Glad all is well. My surgery with Dr. Nick went very well too. I am 10 weeks out and feel great! Keep sipping and walking. Try and get some Isopure in you as soon as you get home. It will help so much with the healing from the inside. Stay ahead of the pain, and sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk!

10 1/2wks PO. When did you try alcohol?
BKLYNgal87 replied to AddryW's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a glass of wine at 4 1/2 weeks post op and a scotch on the rocks recently. I agree with the others - drink it slowly. Limit yourself not only because you'll get drunk faster but also because it's empty calories. -
Any issues with sustained exercise on lap band diet?
MacMadame replied to susan1961's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I don't have a band but my average calories is about 700 a day and I'm training for a triathlon. I didn't start out in wonderful shape ... I was in okay shape though ... so I am seeing dramatic improvements in my cardio workouts. I'm sure that will level off as I get to a more fit level. Anyway, make sure you get lots of Protein so you have the energy you need throughout the day and then time any carbs you ingest so they are right before and/or after your workout. Plus take your vitamins! That's the advice I'm following and it works for me. ETA I was on 500 calories at day at first and I would do cardio at the gym just fine. I was only doing 30 min about 3x a week back then though. Now I do 45 min. and 4-5 times a week. -
Hey Gang, I'm curious what you feel are your top struggles since you have had your surgery. If you have not had surgery that's fine you can also tell me what your top struggles are prior to surgery. The reason I'm asking is this question is my "Life Coach" asked me this very question in our session the other night and it got me to wondering if we all share the same struggles or do we each have our own speical set of struggles. Here are mine... 1. Exercise-desire to do it, but not motivated to it- Solution commited to a 12 week program with the wonderful members of OH that will begin next Sat. I'm totally pumped 2. Clothes-I still don't know how to dress my new body. I still gravitate towards the bigger clothes even though I know I can't wear them. Ideal solution hire a Stylist to dress me *LOL* 3. Dating- for me this is the biggest struggle. I dated so many duds in my former body, I'm scared I'll still make the same mistakes. Solution-buck up and put myself out there. Okay these are mine, let me know if these are similar to yours. If you have more that's fine. ~CoachCher~ http://divinetransformation.blogspot.com/

1 week til surgery! Anyone 200 starting weight?
Private Sleever replied to hopingtolose2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I started this journey I was at 198 and I am 5' tall. At surgery I was 180. When I went for my 4 wk post-op I dropped 25 lbs. I looked & felt better. Went to work after 5 weeks & it was very noticeable. Down 60 lbs total & it's been 7 mons. -
So I went to what I thought was my final pre-op appointment today. No problems on the PFT, the results were "very good". The pulmonologist :reddevil:then feels my jaw and neck and says I have a small jaw and because of that and being obese, I need a sleep study. WTF? I was thwarted by having a small jaw? Now I have to have a sleep study Sunday night. How long does it take for the results from the ss? Anyone know? I want to get this this show on the road! Oh yeah, and I sleep on my stomach (even when pregnant through 25 weeks!)...how is that going to be possible with all of those electrodes?

Big Improvement On Protein Powders! Sf Hershey Syrup...
Strangefruit posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Hi all... Today is Day 6 of my two week pre-op liquid Protein fast... I have been doing the pre-made shakes for work and when I am out and about... at home, I use the powder because I can mix it with ice cubes and make it a little thicker... but it still needed something. Today, I picked up some sugar free Hershey choc syrup... only 15 cal and 5 gr of carbs for two tablespoons. One squirt makes a HUGE difference in my choc shakes... MUCH more satisfying. Oh, and I use skim or almond milk (almond milk has only 40 cal for a cup) and it makes it more filling as well. I alternate between the filling choc above, or I use the GNC mixed berry powder with 1 c. milk, about 4 ice cubes and 1/2 c. frozen mixed berries. The addition of the frozen berries and milk make it SO much more filling and satifying... I only do one shake a day like this though... my dinner one. Gives me something to look forward to while my family is eating pasta! ) -
Thank you!! That made me feel a thousand times better. I basically assumed that it wouldn't ruin everything but I needed at least one person to verify. And I did talk to my team and she basically said I need protein no matter what. Which I completely understand, I'm strictly just talking about this first week. I would look at it as you can just as easily pick up any other kind of illness or gastro that will cause vomiting. YOu could get food poisoning any day of the week. Even though migraine medications arent working for you, cant you take an anti nausea medication or get a shot when a migraine comes on? How horribly frustrating, I know how you feel, I'm miserable at home today (and have been all this week) with an ulcerated right cornea, so I cant drive or see properly. I've seen a surgeon about excimer laser treatment to cure this recurrent problem, he'd formerly told me to just wait and see but I'm over suddenly waking up without warning with my eyes not functioning. I rang the office and they fit me on the very next list, yep 9 December, the day of my lap band operation. I've elected to wait until January and February next year to get each eye done, but I'm hoping against hope my blasted eyes just behave till the ops over and done.

I registered for the Race for the Cure 5k... very excited but now also nervous. I have been loosely doing the Couch to 5k program for a month, but am still not running 1 mile without stopping to walk. Now I looked at the real 5k training schedule and it's 5 days a week! 3 miles, on Tues, Thurs, Fri, 2 miles on Wed and 4 miles on Sun.... OMG! What did I get myself into????

My surgeon and dietician never told me how much calories I'm to have each day other than three meals and was told to start purée when I came out of hospital (I was in hospital for 5 days) my question is one night I could have 5 spoons of purée chicken and vege in 30mins and took almost an hour to drink an up and go but next moring I could drink a whole up and go which is 250ml in 15-20mins no problem I find I can hold more round 200-300ml in 30mins is this normal??? Is their an amount my stomach is only allowed to hold?? I don't Wana stretch my stomach and I have hardly moved my bowls only once in 2weeks and I'm taking lac-dol and adding fibre to my drinks should I see my doc? As I don't see my surgeon until Thursday??

I was banded on 5/19, so I'm obviously not ready for major toning exercises, especially anything using the core muscles. I have been walking, and I'm able to do that without discomfort at a decent pace, and longer each day. But I am losing pretty fast right now, and I really want to know when I can do something that builds muscle a little bit. I guess I have this fear of getting that "deflated" look. Probably more than a little irrational, I know. They generally say 5-6 weeks for strength training, right? But what if I'm 3 weeks post-op, my incisions are healed completely, and I don't feel any pain? Can I, say, do some squats or arm curls, or anything like that? Does it all affect the core or are there exercises that I can work on that will not dramatically affect my core muscles? Also: is there any harm in doing the elliptical rather than the treadmill? Is there a certain time one should wait to do that? If I can't start doing any strength training for another month, I'd like to at least get my upper half moving with the elliptical. Any help appreciated. I am following my food plan to a tee and won't do anything my doctor doesn't approve. Let me know what your experience was in easing back into working out after you were banded. Thanks!

Pre Op. - Is 10% really necessary?
Nymadusa628 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
A pre requisite to surgery is to lose 10% of your body weight. I understand this is good for a successful surgery and to show a commitment to your weightloss. The second reason may make sense but what can not be measures is the mental preparedness. I went to see my nutritionist today and i did not lose any wait form my first visit. It has been a stressful two weeks, i have lost my job and well life was a little draining. This will happen after surgery also .... I am aware of this. It sounds very pepeevish, but the Nutritionsit kind of aggravated me. maybe she just struck a chord idk but when she had said "We want our patients to wait 6months so we can track their commitment and see some type of weight loss progress, this is not just a quick fix." I may have taken it a little personal but i felt like saying to her ok I can lose the weight, don't worry about that, not a problem.. done it many times... I guess I feel they focus on that 10% but we all have lost that 10% that was not the problem, the problem was keeping it off. For safety and percaussion I can see the neccessity but to phrase it as a commitment just aggravates me. There is no real measure for mental growth where the real change happens. Sorry for the bitterness just needed to vent and wanted to see what other think of the 10% loss requirment. -
Pre Op. - Is 10% really necessary?
honk replied to Nymadusa628's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I feel your pain. When I went in for my presurgery labs I ended up speaking with a Nurse Practioner in the group but not my NP. Now I had been waiting for this surgery for 8 months and had lost about 15% body weight. Was I ever irritated when she said to me "Now don't gain any weight between now and the surgery!" I lost 3 pounds in the next two weeks. I can't tell you how badly I wanted to call her out on that comment. She said it in the hallway where I had no privacy. There is never an excuse for being unprofessional and I have a HIPPA privacy rights. Grrrrrrr.
