It's possible to snap back quickly but don't forget that your insides are still healing and even if you don't feel it, it is. So, make sure to not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds and be careful but still keep walking. I assume you are no longer taking pain meds--that was the kicker for me. I couldn't drive until I stopped taking them but I stopped taking them the day I got home from the hospital and didn't really need them--in fact they made me nauseous. I went to work at a week and a half but I have a desk job so it is a bit easier.

needing help and motivation
Phranp replied to laceylooloo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't give up Lacey, you can find support here. Many of us fall off the wagon every now and again -- you can get back up, just as we have. You just need a little support to get rolling ... consider it done! You say you have "rheumatism", we don't use that term "medically" much here in the U.S. anymore, but I read that it is still used in other countries and can sometimes mean "fibromyalgia". Are you on pain meds for it? I have spinal stenosis (which is actually arthritis of the spine) which can be very painful. I had back surgery in 2004 and cannot run anymore, but I walk. I walk 1 1/5 miles 5 days a week. Every week or so I add another 1/4 mile. What I have learned about arthritis is that a body in motion stays in motion. So, if I don't move I will continue to be stiff and in pain. Do I wake up some mornings feeling like "nooooo, I can't do it"? Yes, I do, but I do it anyway because I have found that I am getting stronger. My Ortho told me that while my spinal stenosis will not get better, the weight loss and strengthening of the muscles around the spine from exercising will help make my back stronger. He was RIGHT! Wow! So, if you don't have fibromyalgia, but you do have arthritis, start small and slow (and be sure to take pain meds -- I take Tylenol arthritis because it is time released). I don't know how much you weigh so I don't know if you are morbidly obese or obese or what. But, exercise is a big part of this journey. You may want to start with the food as suggested by hokiemama and move on to the exercise when you have lost a few pounds more. YOU CAN DO THIS Lacey! Just don't be too hard on yourself. You are not in a race with anyone. Doesn't matter how long it takes, just keep trying. It will get better. You are NOT failing. All the best to you on your journey! ~Fran -

I would say my best advise is take off at least 1 week, start walking right away, and buy plenty of different kinds of Protein drinks. I bought a variety and it helped because you get bored drinking the same thing meal after meal.

Also, reward yourself for small goals. It helps. THe first 4 weeks were the hardest for me. I thought I would never make it though the liquid stage. I, however, lost alot of weight during that time.

Carbs... When to Introduce them (The Good Ones!)
newbiesleever posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only a couple weeks out from being sleeved but I was wondering for those of you have been sleeved for months now, when you started to introduce carbs into your diet. I know you're supposed to eat Protein first, then veggies, then carbs. I'm just wondering how long it took to add veggies and carbs into your diet. I hear once you start on solid foods, you're just focusing on getting the protein first and then later you can add veggies. At how many months, can you start to introduce whole wheat bread/crackers/tortilla, brown rice, quinoa and other healthy carbs like that? -
Hi Everyone Banded - 10/27/2011
thebandedman replied to Bluedevil11's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was banded 10/25/11 and am starting week 6 solid foods today. I'm shocked it takes me so long to get hungry. My weight loss has stalled even with increased exercise. I know I have another week of healing but I got used to seeing those numbers decrease every day . I consume 1000 - 1100 calories per day and average a 2900 calorie burn per my BodyBugg. I am shrinking in areas so I know my body is making changes . TBM -

Thank you- maybe my next fill will help. I am eating a healthy diet protein, low fat, etc. No gravies or sauces. I am exercising - I swim at least 2 to 3 times a week, so I am anxious to see if the next fill will help! I don't like not loosing!

Thank you!!! I like exercise but need to fit it in. I have a ton more energy. I was in Key West for 2 months and it is a walking town so I rode my bike about 3 times a week and walked everywhere. I need to increase that and do foyer an longer. I am curious how bike riding has helped in toning?

I have heard that Tricare is tough also however my experience was the opposite. I am a AF wife. I was 100 lbs overweight after having three kids. I have a huge family history of diabetes and had gestational diabetes in my last pregnancy. I got my referral in August 2008 and was banded by the end of October 2008. I did not have major hoops to jump through. I wasn't required to see a psychologist. I only had a few tests and that was it along with my surgeons diet requirements. Good luck!

Well I'm not a veteran, but I would like to say WELCOME. I will be banded in a couple of weeks. This site has been of great help and everyone here is so supportive. Good Luck to You!

Hi from Colorado
conniesueb replied to jewelsismelting's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi! I am also in Colorado--in Pueblo--welcome and good luck with your band and your mother-in-law! I guess I am lucky because I absolutely love my in-laws. They are just the nicest people you could ever meet. I actually look forward to their visits cuz when they're here, I don't have to cook or clean--they do everything! My husband usually takes the week off when they come, but I always have to work, so I always come home to dinner and a clean house! They are awesome. Well, I hope Cigna doesn't make it too difficult for you--I had to pay up front, and am now trying to get reimbursed from my insurance, and it has been a nightmare! They have screwed everything up from the start. It has been 6 months, and I have only gotten back $910 for the anesthesia portion, and they sent that check to the doctor instead of me, and I had to wait for them to send it to me. Its just a big mess, but they had said it would be covered before I had the surgery. My surgeon will not bill insurance anymore because he has had so many problems getting paid--now I know why! So, I had to pay everything up front and am now waiting, waiting, waiting for reimbursement. Good luck with your journey! -
Hi Kitty, I'm new too. Banded 2 weeks ago. Tell us how you're going.

Thanks for the input. I did call the doctor that night and he told me I was probably dehydrated, wasn't having calories or my thyroid was out of whack. He told me to have some juice with sugar and calories. He said he knows that we are told to have drinks with no calories or sugar but that I needed the liquid and calories. My thyroid tests were negative. Over the weekend I tried to get more liquids in and to get more calories in- meaning I probably wasn't eating enough "food". I got banded just two weeks ago and was having a hard time getting all the liquids and Proteins in. And after only 6-8 tablespoons of Soup broth, I was already full. He said I had to eat a little more than thought. I am feeling better though! It will be 2 weeks tomorrow and I've lost 13 pounds as of today.

I was banded on 6/11. For the past two days I have been having odd heart palpitations that mainly seem to stay in my throat. Today they have been quite often- every 10-15 minutes even if I'm just sitting relaxing. I can say that I am having a very hard time getting my Protein and fluids in. Especially the fluids. Can the heart palpitations be from possibly dehydration? How many calories should we be aiming for in a day. I have been only getting three very small meals in (maybe 5-6 tablespoon of soup) and can't seem to get the three protein Snacks in. Perhaps I'm just malnutritioned from it all although I don't feel real bad. Just the heart palpitations with a little fuzziness sometimes- no dizziness. However, I don't want it to get worse. Any recommendations? I am a first time poster!!!

I am new here just wanted to say hi. I was banded on 11/06/08 by Dr. Schwartz in Tucson and have really had no problems. I have lost 18 lbs which feels great! I am still having trouble figuring out my meals ( what I can and can't eat versus getting all my nutrients ). I am working out 4 to 5 times a week and it's working great. So far I feel I made the best decision of my life!!!

Unfortunately, there is really nothing that will get rid of trapped gas once it is in your lower intestines. Moving your body to move the gas down and out of the digestrive tract, is really the only way to get rid of it. Gas-x/simethicone works ONLY in the stomach. It does not work once food has entered the digestive tract. When I was in the early stages I would eat (or drink) the meal and use the Gas-x strips the dissolve on your tongue. DONT wait until later - they are most effective when the food is in the stomach. Think of bubbles on the surface of liquid that come to the top and pop. This is what Gas-x does. When I was farther out - about at 3 weeks I found the chewable pills to work better immediately after a meal to allieviate that gas feeling. Be proactive and treat after eating - taking Gas-x more that an hour after a meal is almost a waste of money. Nothing stops gas after it is already in your bowels - except moving it out. Sorry if TMI:) Bean-o is also very effective at preventing gas from forming from beans, vegetables and whole grains. Consider adding a probiotic once you are cleared for pills capsules - I recommend Florastor - one of the few probiotics backed by double blind/placebo scientific studies. Worth the expense. Good luck - remember - prevention

My Protein Shake Panacea
Butterthebean replied to DanaInNewOrleans's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The best Protein is whey protein. If that is the first ingredient on the package, it's high quality protein. Somebody made a post just a couple of days ago, maybe yesterday, explaining what to look for, and the differences in Proteins....I think it was Shane Ferris (OTR sleever). As for getting in the required protein, nobody does it the first couple of weeks. Just try your best. Getting in the Water is more important. But if you can't get in the protein, I wouldn't waste any energy eating anything that is full of carbs and absent protein. For example, I had grits on my list of approved full liquids, but my nut told me not to eat them unless I was getting close to my protein goal. After about a week, I was hitting that goal, so I started enjoying a small bowl of grits about every other day until I hit the soft food stage. -
I just got approved from Tri-Care and if you meet the qualifications and do the pre testing it goes very fast. I was approved in two days and I have read a lot of other posts saying the same thing ... Total time from first visit to my PC Dr to surgeon and now the surgery is 4 months. It goes fast . Waiting for the approval was the hardest .. Good luck to you and keep us posted .. I go next week and can't wait ..

shannon- I'm not vegan now- I went off as soon as I decided on the pre-op diet... 3/4/3 proteins- all animal meats... I still eat my greens- just no rice/pasta - still need to kick the tortilla addiction... This week I am going to work on more mindful eating and smaller portions. Graduations in family- celebrations are evil!

New to vertical sleeve talk

Welcome to the site. My nutritionist says there is no real hunger, that the hunger is in your head. In surgery, the part of the stomach that "gets hungry" is removed. I don't know what to say about the nausea. Are you eating very, very slowly, chewing your food very, very well, eating very, very small bites and eating only small amounts at any given time? Are you sure you still need to crush your meds? I only had to do so for about three weeks. If you need to, mix the crushed meds with applesauce or pudding, something with flavor. I took one pill that was very bitter when crushed. It was vile tasting no matter what I mixed it with. I just had to buck up and take it anyway. It is only for a short time. In fact, all of your difficulties are only for a short time. Hang in there and give us updates on your situation. -
So...my last post I was just past the Psych eval, waiting on 2009 record, since then all has fallen into place. Today I met with my surgeon, Dr. Anderson, and after that meeting we set up the surgery date! October 31! Yes, just a little over 2 weeks away until I begin the process of a new me!!!! I am excited, and nervous, but mostly ready for this next step in life!
