  1. I'm a year out. Not sure if that makes me a vet or a newbie! I sneak sips from family, but it's all I can do because it makes me uncomfortable. Used to be addicted to Dt. Dew. Don't miss it. But I drink out of (gasp!) straws all the time with no issue. I chew gum (another gasp!) and I drink alcohol. This is life. It's my own rules. Do what you want. It's your life. 2. I used to be a bartender and I know it's not preferred but I know of two people who had that surgery and drank soda and alcohol daily but I can also tell you that both of them are putting the weight they lost back on I haven't had my surgery yet but just by what I saw in them I wouldn't suggest it I quit soda 6 months ago and I crave it every day but know that I want to make this a long term goal and there is no sense going through all this just to eventually pile it back on the point is to start a new life and new ways. Best of luck and I hope that helps sway you to keeping up ur great work!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Revision completed

Its hard to believe it has been 5 months since my revision. I weighed in at 159.6 this morning and seem to be holding steady. I dont feel like my weight bounces around as much. I am getting use to the RNY but am struggling in other areas now { alcohol}. I have never been much of a drinker but have noticed an increase and am trying to nip it in the butt now. I do not understand why this didnt happen with VSG . Any thoughts ? I see the team first part of November and am going to talk to them about this

    January Dates

I'll admit it's awkward and a little frightening at first, but the needles are very small and barely hurt at all. I gave them to myself 2x a day for 7 days. I was taught to wipe an area on my lower tummy with an alcohol swab, pinch an inch (or two ;] ) and just stick the needle in then push in the plunger until the medicine is emptied out. Then all you have to do is remove the needle from your skin and push down on the plunger to enclose the needle prior to disposing of it. You won't even need a bandaid, but you will need to do it in different spots each time, and have some kind of container on hand for disposal.

    Post Op June 2014 Sleevers

Hello, I'm June 18. I'm doing pretty well, I think, but I'd sure like to be able to get that 64oz. down. I've tried plain water, Kool-Aid, Gatorade. Anybody have some suggestions? This is when I miss my carbonated friends. Well, let me just say it, I also miss my alcohol friends. I'd give a lot for....you know....fill in the blank. I'm down 25#. Maybe not the fastest loser out there, but I'm absolutely delighted. Maybe struggling a teeny, tiny bit with humility these days. I'm so doggone proud of myself for having done this! I haven't told anyone but my husband and best friend. They keep secrets. I didn't tell anyone else because no one else needs to know. AND...it's kinda tough to put the toothpaste back in the tube. Good luck, everyone!!!

    No added sugar cordial ?

A cordial is not going to be a low glycemic index drink. Also, I didnt say that she was going to become an alcoholic. Transfer addictions can be alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, exercising, gambling, shopping etc. If she is newly post op and judging by the question its likely, and already asking about alcohol she can be opening herself up to a slippery slope. If nothing else, like for me, drinking can lead to noshing and then full out Taco Bell binges. HW 385 SW 359 CW 338 Sleeved 10/5/16

    May Sleevers...where are you?

Just my opinion, but I would say stay away from it...alcohol has lots of sugar in it...but have fun!

Does alcohol give you a different feeling now than it did before? What is a typical situation in which you'd consume a drink?

    Non Scale Victories

I'm soon to be in the same boat. Totally unsupportive alcoholic husband that doesn't want to change is on his way out the door. I don't know how I'm going to make it with one fixed income but I'll soon find out. FYI it's okay to feel sorry for yourself once in a while. This is a rough journey nevermind the journey + life woes. Best of luck to you [emoji106]

    Pot Use And The Lapband

God, some people here are so judgmental. Weed has actually been decriminalized in many states. and just bc something is illegal doesn't make it morally wrong. you need to look at the historic reasons weed was banned while alcohol was not.

What is the point of it all???

Wow, that sounds like what I would have written the day before I made the deicion to have weight loss surgery. I've been in your shoes, so take those damn shoes off and get some new ones. It's a little creepy that you wrote that because they really were my words last year. Mentally ill mother, alcoholic father, very rough life. I turned it all around and became a goofball. It's my built-in defense system. Find a fabulous new career, for example. It's working wonders for me. Rearrange your entire house. Put the beds in the living room and paint the whole thing bright, cherry colors. Go on a bike ride, read funny books, collect phone numbers and make new girlfriends. Go to comedy clubs, don't sit around. Go to the drugstore and try on all the makeup. Call all the Mary Kay reps in your area (there are probably 95 on your block) and get daily facials. Wear flowers in your hair. Go to the mall in a dress with no underwear. Do something - do anything. Just do do do do do!
  12. Quick question, I was just banded a few days ago on Friday and this past Sunday, I went to Mass. I received Communion and took some Wine as well (tiny amount to help the host dissolve). I wonder if I should have done that so soon since I am obviously still on liquids. Do you think I could have hurt anything by doing this? I know I'm not supposed to have solids or alcohol. How soon did others start receiving Communion after surgery?

    Alcohol

My NUT told me I can have a sip of champagne or white wine at an upcoming wedding (I will be about 4 months post-op), but never have liquor, beer, etc. I have no desire at this point to go against her wishes. One day I will probably try it, but I rarely drink anyway, so it's not a huge loss. Every time I think about alcohol, all I can see are calories and sugar now...not as appealing as it once was!

    Alcohol

Had my first mixed drink at about 4 months out. Did perfectly fine, and a few at a time haven't been a problem for me. Word of warning...while I hardly follow the 30 mins before and 30 mins after principle with Water, you absolutely must do this with alcohol! Horrid problems will result with food and alcohol in the sleeve at the same time. I get dizzy and feel like I am going to pass out. Carbonation has generally been difficult, as it can cause stretching and horrible gas, so I try to avoid beer or champagne except at special events. Your doctor will probably be pretty discouraging about consuming any alcohol, so this is where you will want to use particularly proactive trial and error to see what works for you and what doesn't, both on the scale and off.
  15. I've always been told to leave the surgi- strips on until they fall off. After removing staples, a lot of times they'll use surgi-strips. Vitamin E oil will help with scarring and itching. Penni, are you overcleaning it? I did that w/ a previous surgery. I was cleaning it w/ betadine several times. I really thought I was taking care of my wound. But it made some of the surface skin peel away. Peroxide and/or alcohol is very drying, too. Leatha, your dr. may have used a nail gun! He may have gotten a better deal on it. But did he use stainless? You know, health care is having to make cuts! We had some missionary friends that would collect and take medical supplies when they went to Russia. She said Russian sutures are thick and coarse, just like dental floss. Ouch!
  16. sleepwonderful sleep I wish I wasn't addicted to reading these damn post...alcohol...hmmm...nahhh I don't like it much....Shesh thank goodness or I'd be fat and brused from all of myb stumbling. LOL:rolleyes:
  17. Hi Ronda.....I am going to write out the instructions I got from my Surgeons office. Hope it helps! Diet Notes When you arrive home on the day of surgery: You can have water, Crystal Light, diet iced tea, chicken broth, and decaffeinated tea. You should drink only 1/2 to 1 ounce of any of these liquids every 20 minutes while you are awake, as tolerated. 3-4 days after surgery: If you do not have any nausea or vomiting from the liquids, then you can start pureed foods. For two weeks after surgery: All food must be pureed no thicker than applesauce. 3rd week after surgery: Eat soft solid food. Every Day: Don't forget to take your protein powder in milk or yogurt every day, starting the day that you get home from the hospital. Eat 4 to 6 mini-meals per day. Make sure that you eat 1 to 2 servings from the milk group and 4 to 6 servings from the protein group each day. Eat slowly! For example, eat 1 ounce of meat, poultry or fish over 10 minutes. Eat 1 ounce of all other foods over 5 minutes. Stop eating if you are full. Do not spend more than 30 minutes eating at one meal. More about liquids: Try to drink 64 ozs. of liquid without caffeine each day. Wait at least 30 minutes after eating before you start drinking. Stop drinking 5 minutes before you eat. Drink slowly and do not use straws. Do not drink carbonated or alcoholic beverages for one month after surgery. When do I follow-up after surgry? You will meet with your Surgeon/Nurse Practitioner 2 to 3 weeks after surgery for your first follow-up visit. You will also see the Nurse Practitioner at 5 to 6 weeks after surgery and then monthly for the first year, every 3 months for the second year and every year thereafter. I hope this helps, Ronda!

    Alcohol/drinks

Wow, ok. Well she didn't ask IF you were drinking. She asked those who are drinking what they prefer to drink. If you don't agree then don't post. Preaching or off-subject opinions are not needed. Keep it to yourself and keep moving. I don't get why people feel the need to post at all if they have no valuable input to the topic. Anyway, I did my research when I was dieting pre-op and one of the lowest carb drinks is vodka soda. For me, the taste isn't that great so I will add a splash of cranberry juice or try to bring my own Crystal Lite packets for flavor. I've been sticking to that or wine. My NUT recommended it as generally the lowest carb/calorie drink. I used to be a big beer drinker but I cannot tolerate it anymore. Even almost 8 months out I cannot do the carbonation. I do get an occasional craving but I don't miss it that much though. My doctor's guidelines were no alcohol for six months. I did pretty well with it, just a few exceptions. I talked to my NUT about it because I was hosting my BFF's bachelorette party at four months out. She said the main reason they say that is not only because of the empty calories but because you tend to make poor eating decisions when you are drinking. That can be what you choose to eat or grazing or drinking when eating. So just be mindful and do your research!

    Alcohol/drinks

Alcohol for me goes down crazy good. I can have 2 bud light and be super buzzing. At almost 300 calories for those 2, it was dinner and my snacks that day but not problems with the bubbles. Vodka cranberries were my fav pre op and my go to post op. haven't had one in almost 2 months, went crazy when I did though and had a lot of cranberries with double shots of kettle one. I surprisingly wasn't as drunk as I thought I would be though. But I use to hold my liquor very well pre op so maybe that was it? Or maybe I was super drunk and just didnt notice lol.

    Alcohol/drinks

I didn't really jave a drink till i was 6 months out. I think for everyone alcohol works differently you have to see what works for you. I found vodka, with water and lots of fresh lime wedges suits me best. Theres no carbonated drink added so you dont suffer from gas though luckily at 1 yr out if i choose to i can pretty much consume anything in moderation

    Craving chocolate and sugar

I'm not so much a chocolate fan, but... You can try Carob. Taste is similar to Chocolate. There are also sugar-free Chocolate candies from Russell Stover's, although they have sugar alcohol which can give you gas and diarhea if you eat too much at once. You can also buy Premier Protein Chocolate drinks and Protein Bars.

    Alcohol?

I enjoy alcohol. I loved various IPA's (type of beer). I am sure that love got me some extra poundage. After surgery, I stayed away for 3 months. Now, the same beer with the carbonation hasn't been that attractive, plus, taste has changed. Red wine, ok, but again, not the same. I have found vodka either served bloody mary style or with cranberry juice is ok. I do find you feel tipsy faster and I would not drive even with one. the best part of the drinks I just listed, you can go virgin and nobody would know. You also start to count the calories and make choices. Again, I like to drink, I would never say don't, it just becomes harder.
  23. 1 month post op and wanted to know when you tried alcohol for the first time, I have 3 Christmas parties to attend and will be surrounded by it! Per my MD can't have any til month 3 just wanted to see if anyone bent the rules out there!

    Alcohol?

I had my first wine at 3 months. Had hard liquor cocktails by about 5-6 months. I don't get buzzed any quicker than before (bummer), but alcohol will give me gastritis if I drink more than a couple days in a row. But I wouldn't dream of drinking alcohol only 1 month out. Incision is not healed yet and nothing is worth the risk of causing damage so soon.
  25. Staples take 4-6 weeks to heal. Until then you should be on a restricted diet of puree foods. If you eat solid foods within this timeframe, you risk "pushing" a staple out of place, which will eventually cause leakage Also, no fruit or acid products, bc it deteriorate the stsples before it heals. Same with alcohol.
