Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum
Lap_dancer replied to Shesha's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Second post: Today, Sunday-April 20, Yahoo has a front page story on what to eat. VERY good info. Five must eat foods for good nutrition added to your diet of high protein every day. If the story is gone by the time you read this highlights were green tea up to 4 cups (antioxidants), seeds and nuts-almonds, cashews (anti's) full of omega 3, whole grains for fiber - 3 servings (oatmeal), 25 grams of dark leafy greens like asparagus, broccoli, and a serving of low fat milk, Vitamin D, or yogurt ( 8 oz. ) -

I don't think I have ever seen any of that yogurt at my local store. Which is odd because we have a large Greek population here... Enjoy your B&J binge chickie!!! -
Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

The new habits are very doable, just choose one and start working on it now. I got a bunch of baby spoons off of Ebay and started eating my yogurt with it every day. One day I picked up a regular teaspoon, and it felt weird!! All this long before my surgery. Then pick another skill, like tiny bites and paying attention to how much you chew. I see no point in waiting until the band is in, and doing total immersion when you can get your feet wet gradually. As for the port, it depends on the surgeon. There are two bariatric surgeons in the practice that banded me. One puts it on the right, The surgeon I drew places it front and center several inches below the breastbone. I was careful to ask about this because the one place I didn't want it to be was on the left. Lying on my right side hurts my hip, so I wanted to have my left side available for sleeping on. Hope this helps! Orea -

Hi everyone, I'm officially a March bandster now and want to be a part of the 50's group. I was just banded on 3/19 and am now Day 5 post-op. I'm feeling pretty good for the most part and I'm starting to get a little bit hungry, at least I was able to start creamy soups, yogurt and V-8 juice yesterday so that's helping a bit. Now I'm looking forward to this coming Wednesday, when I can add refried beans (planning a trip to Taco Bell already, lol) Anyway, being able to add some "real food" tuna, deli turkey, etc. will be my next treat that I'm looking forward to. -

Janet, I always appreciate your imput. You have time and success under your belt (a much smaller belt I might add) I would rather be eating foods than the protein drinks anyday. I have been having scrambled eggs, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, ground turkey patties, low fat yogurt, lowfat string cheese, mushed up beans, humus, a little mashed potatoes from time to time, tuna with a little fat free mayo. What other protein choices do you suggest? Are there any of these that I should not be eating? I know the potatoes are probably not a good choice but I have the small red potoes and mash them up with a little skim milk just once in awhile. What about the South Beach pre made fozen meals in a pinch, like to take to work sometimes. I have been walking my dog in the park in the evenings and using my eliptical machine at home but I haven't been consistent. The exercise factor has always been a hugh challenge for me. I am going to ride my bike today for 30 min. I know that my sister and I can't always work out together. Once I get started at the gym I know that it will be up to me to go on a regular basis. My plan is to go before work 3-4 days a week. If I wait until after work I can always find an excuse not to go. Instead of sitting in the morning sipping coffee and reading the newpaper I can go to the gym instead. I always enjoy it once there but it take alot of mental talk to get my butt in gear. Thanks for taking the time to listen and advise. I value your opinion very much. Becky -

Typical day for me is: B-Greek yogurt with Splenda and small amount of Fiber One L-3.5 oz of protien. Salmon, chicken, steak (hamburger of any kind does not sit well) Veggies or fruit D- Same as above S-Always treat myself each evening to 100 cal pack of popcorn and throughout the day will have SF Jello or 100 cal 1/2 cup FF icecream. I do two snacks a day. What is Greek yogurt? Is that a brand name? I haven't seen it in the Houston area. Where do you shop? -

Hey Feb bandsters! I was Feb 3rd and I just h ad my 2 week post op appt today. My doc was very pleased with my progress. Since I started my Pre-op, I was down 23 pounds today. I have also already lost over 19 inches. TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS IF YOU HAVEN'T YET!!!!! Week one was the roughest and by day 5, I was much better. My only issue has been an allergic reaction to the steri strips. I have red welts that itch like crazy on every incision site. My clothes are already looser and I started my soft food phase. I have been putting turkey meatballs in the food processor with sauce over polenta and eggplant and making a small Italian stack. All soft and yum! Also, FF refried beans with lowfat cheese and a dollop of greek yogurt makes a great dinner. A poached egg with 2 tablespoons of organic cottage cheese for breakfast has been divine. Get your liquids in and start moving!! I wish the recent bandsters the best of luck and the next round of Feb bandsters a safe and easy surgery and a painless recovery!! -
Any other September 2013 bandsters?
dohair2013 replied to Irishflower79's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It's amazing to me how different everyone's pre-op diet is determined by different doctors!! I am to use 4 protein carb controlled shakes ( they gave me a list of types) and 6 snacks a day that consist of my choice out of 1/2 c oatmeal, 1 cup tomato or v-8 juice, 1 cup raw veggies ( a list was given to choose from), a list and amounts of different fruits to choose from, sugar free pudding or jello, and light yogurts. I am on day 4 and am HUNGRY for some reason today!! I am a little overwhelmed with the thought of how my life will change after having the surgery but am exited all the same. -

Hey Erica216, How are you doing? I was banded the same day as you. Sunday I can start eating creamy soups, sf pudding, sf applesauce and yogurts with no chunks. Then, next Thursday I can go to mushy foods which I am really looking forward to it. Can't wait for a different texture in my mouth. LOL... I hope you are good. I am doing good, just a little pain on the left side and I seem to get winded really quick but taking it easy. Good luck to you... -
- I felt the same way! all liquid all the time - makes me gag. so everyday I add something (I know I'm not supposed to) but I have a yogurt or sf jell or a piece of plain turkey. If not I would scream. I figure three days before surgery (which is this Monday 11/12) I will have nothing but a few shakes; water and clear broth. I can't drink 5 shakes a day - simply can't do it. Other people may be able to, but not me. Good luck everyone!

Can you eat all this in a day? HELP!
OutsideMatchInside replied to AchieveGoals's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I doubt you will be able to eat the yogurt early on, it can be dense. You might be better off with 3 shakes a day. It took me about 1 to 1.5 hours to finish a shake. Since they were a liquid, I could just sip on them as long as it took to get them in. The 20 minute rule didn't apply to liquids like Protein shakes. If you know a good veggie broth you like, I would suggest getting an unflavored Protein powder to add to the broth. All of my vegan or vegetarian friends are fat, except one that I think is just naturally thin. They are the worst sugar addicts I have ever met in my life. And there are tons of great Vegan treats in Chicago, which doesn't help. The metaphysical place that closed down about 12 years ago on the north side use to have the best vegan Cookies, I wasn't even Vegan and I used to devour them. -

Went for my 4 month checkup yesterday. Doctor says I am losing right on schedule and that I am doing great. Got .5cc fill for a total of 6cc's. He says my band will hold approx 12cc's but most people that he has seen reach their green zone between 6cc & 9cc. So I hope I am getting close to mine. I have been tight since fill yesterday so we will see. Only doing protein shakes and greek yogurt for today. Hope everyone else from Feb is doing good. -

Hi Heather, I am 4 days banded and doing fine. There is some pain, shoulders as reported by others, and sore belly making it hard to get up and out of chairs and bed, but other than that doing fine. I went shopping a few days before my surgery so that I would have a variety of things on hand. I bought the Low Carb Slim Fast and they are fine. Also bought some EAS protein powder. Also bought some soups to blend. I checked out the protein content and discovered that pea, lentil, and bean are higher than most soups. Someone suggested Progresso Tuscany Chicken; I had that yesterday and not too bad. Some of the other things I got are sugar-free jello and popsicles, Lite V8 Splash, variety of tea flavors, black beans and tomatoes ( I heard it's good when you blend them together for a soup; haven't tried it yet though). Also bought some Greek vanilla yogurt to add to the protein smoothies to kick the protein up a notch. Yesterday I made a banana protein smoothie but you have to be careful these first two weeks of the chunks left in it. Blend it really really well. Today I made one with blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries, but it had way too much pulp and seeds left in it so I had to strain it really well. Probably won't make that one again. Tasted good though. Don't forget the chapstick because you really will need it. Walk around as much as you can afterwards, and use your spirometer to keep your lungs clear. Didn't do that 2 yrs. ago and ended up in the emergency room. Good luck......you will do fine. -

Tiffykins replied to Timetofly's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I suffered the liquids in liquids out until I got to mushies. Greek yogurt helped, and I know a few other members bought some Probiotics to mix in their water/crystal light to help with the gi tract. My surgeon didn't prescribe a PPI until I talked to him about it. I had this kind of weird twinge in my stomach after I would eat something, and then I felt like I could eat again. I can't say it was hunger, but it was weird. I went on Prilosec 20mg once daily, and haven't had any issues since. I didn't go on the Prilosec until about 6 weeks post-op. I take it first thing in the morning, and I wait 1 solid hour before eating anything. I would definitely talk to your surgeon about getting on a PPI. If your surgeon can't prescribe one for you, Prevacid and Prilosec are both available over the counter. I have one more 90 day refill on my Prilosec, and keep saying I'm going to wean myself off, but I'm doing so great, I don't want to throw my body out of whack. -

OK, so i kinda cheated today. I am still on liquids only + yogurt for 2 more days and I broke down added an egg to my chicken broth. I am allowed poached eggs in 2 days. I tried to make my own egg drop soup, but I guess the broth wasn't hot enough and it just turned cloudy. I heated it up some more and omg it was delish!! I hope it continues down my digestive tract as happily as it went in. LOL -

Georgia, stop in the grocery store. Grab a yogurt or applesauce that are in the tubes so you can eat on the go. -
I was sleeved 11/15 in NJ. I had no nauseau or pain, sore of course, and the gas/reflux was pretty bad (get those Gas X strips!) but that was because they fixed a hiatal hernial. I'm doing really well, so far down about 11 lbs per my scale. I'm eating protein shakes, sf jello & pudding, plain/vanilla yogurt (non fat), I can have milk, oatmeal, pureed veggies, mashed potatos, broth or pureed soup, SF Ice pops, crystal light, tea, water, gatorade etc. The yogurt cup or jello/pudding cup is about a serving for me per meal. I'm doing fine, don't feel overly hungry, my body tells me when I need to eat and I'm listening to it. Supposed to get about 45-60 oz of liquid plus 70-85 g of protein per day.. I feel like all I do is eat and drink trying to get it all in! After 3 weeks of soft/puree foods, then I will move to more of a solid. I'm glad I did it, and I was a nervous wreck! Good luck to everyone having their surgery this week and in the coming weeks. It truly does get better every day.

I was sleeved May 7th and haven't had any issues. I was kept 1 extra day in the hospital because of not peeing (seriously). I did eventually pee and was released. I'm on clears for 2 weeks which seems like a lot to me but I have medication I take mixed into some yogurt. I have my 1st follow up appointment with my surgeon and NUT on Monday. Overall I'm feeling really good and I can't wait to eat something solid but I guess I have awhile to wait for that. -

I'm still having some gas pains occasionally and they do hurt! Is anyone else feeling this? Hope everyone else is doing well. You're all in my prayers and God bless!!! -

Thank you everyone!! I went and saw my surgeon and he told me to just walk for now esp. since one of my incisions got infected :/ I started to take ensure with 13G of Protein but I think the calories are too much. I'm going to try the low fat Greek yogurt with the Protein powder, skim milk and fat free carnations with OJ that someone said Hopefully that will taste a lot better!! -THANK YOU!! I have another question (sorry for asking so much!) I've been getting really thirsty from the hot weather and I want to chug Water. I'm afraid because I was told small sips but I don't feel like it's enough and it's REALLY hot. What can I do? Just suck it up and continue with the sips or is it okay to drink water normally?
