  1. The 30 grams things came out of body builders (of which I am definitely not one). In terms of muscle-building and muscle-retention, anything more than 30 grams at a time probably isn't going to have a much bigger impact than 30. But that protein is used for many purposes, including amino acids and any excess protein is broken down into energy. At least for me, its a good source of energy. If I drink the Chike shake at 7:30-8am, I'm not hungry until noon. And I routinely get >100g of protein throughout the day. I am losing weight (135 pounds as I approach my six month anniversary), my doc loves my bloodwork and I have great energy, so if it ain't broke, I'm not going to fix it. I am not going to make perfect the enemy of the good.
  2. Interesting. All I know is that Since about 2 months past my surgery I stopped being so dang hot all the time and sweating like crazy. Summer was coming to a close so I wasn't really sure if it was my imagination or real and didn't have time to really test it out. Guess I'll know for sure this Summer. LOL But doing things around the house that normally made me hot and sweat regardless of the time of year like cooking, cleaning, carrying anything of weight, etc. would have me drenched in sweat and would take me forever to cool down from. Now, NOPE! Doesn't happen any longer. We also always sleep with two fans on all year long and since surgery I find myself cold doing that and have gone from sleeping in underwear only to sleeping in fuzzy long pants and long sleeve shirts. LOL NOT complaining though cause I can always do things to easily get warm but it was next to impossible to cool down when I was always hot. Having said all that, my own coldness hasn't stopped since it started even though I've been stalled since Oct 25th. Well, I should say I was stalled since then, then I contacted my nutritionist in December some time and made some adjustments and then the scale finally moved again and I have since lost an additional 4-5 lbs but yeah, not sure that logic/theory applies to me as my stall seems to be constant (not actually losing weight or inches) and yet I remain cold all the time. I just finished converting a good size shed, that was sitting empty doing nothing, into a gym. That had occupied all of my time and energy all of January and exercise went to the wayside. So starting Monday I plan on getting back on track with my exercise and HOPEFULLY then the weight will start dropping regularly again.
  3. I haven't noticed this, but I have to say that contrary to most people, I have actually been LESS cold than I used to be prior to surgery. I attribute this to the fact that I am cold mostly when sedentary, and I was more sedentary prior to preparing for surgery. Now that I'm more active, I don't feel cold all the time. I used to always be cold, and now I'm comfortable more of the time. One thing for me is that I take medication that can cause difficulties with thermoregulation. I used to be bothered by both heat and cold, and I haven't noticed this as much. I'm still taking the same medication at the same dose, so maybe losing weight has helped me thermoregulate? I know that if I start being cold (usually when sitting at my desk working) I feel better if I get up and start moving. Sometimes, I take that cue as a motivator to get on the treadmill. Othertimes... I just crawl into bed.

    Uhhh... several of us, including me, said that regret is common. Also, even if you have PCOS, they are not going to do a bariatric surgery if you are already at a healthy weight.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

    We're getting close!! I start my pre-op appointments next week. I have my pre-op physical with my GP on Tuesday and blood work Thursday. No pre-op liver shrinking diet for me.     March 2022 Surgery Buddies

    Congratulations on your surgery date. March 9th 2021 here and what a year it has been. I am currently 13 pounds from goal and sorta stuck there. I think my body has found it’s happy weight and I may need to add in more exercise to get to my goal but I couldn’t be happier about my progress so far.
  7. Hi surgery pals! I know we've talked about being cold all the time, and I had a data point some of you may recognize (or the veterans might remember): I was cold all the time from basically Day 1 after surgery until I reached plateaus, the first one of which in Month 9. After a sharp dip and rebound in December when I had COVID, I'm currently fluctuating steadily around 88.7-89.3 / 195-197 lbs). Pretty much from one day to the next, I stopped being cold all the time. Now, however, the cold has come back! As has my red cheeks and the feeling of being warm inside (yeah I know, it's a bit of a paradox). Just tested negative for COVID, btw. On top of that, my stomach is yelling it's full after a few bites. I think those are all signs the system wants to lose a little again (I'm not really on board with that, I'm trying to bulk up in the gym). At least that's been my experience at the end of the weight loss phase, which has started and stopped from Month 9 to now (I'm into Month 15): every time a loss was inbound, I'd get cold. Have any of you experienced this?

    Weight gain

    Stalls are plateaus but they don't make you gain weight. Over what period have time have you gained this weight? If it's over a month, that's concerning, if it's over a year it's just excess calories. I searched online about weight gain and birth control pills and read: Weight gain is a common birth control pill side effect. Certain oral contraceptives are more likely than others to increase the pounds. Fortunately, the weight gain is often due to temporary water retention and will go away in a few months. Water retention is a typical symptom of premenstrual syndrome that is caused by fluctuating hormone levels. You’ve probably noticed it before—about a week or two before your period starts you start to feel bloated and your clothes are a little too tight. Estrogen-containing birth control pills have the same effect. The most widely used type of birth control pill contains two types of synthetic female hormones—estrogen and progestin—that prevent your body from releasing an egg. It is the estrogen part of the pill that can cause you to retain water, which may make you feel like you’ve gained weight. Water retention usually passes after you’ve been taking the pill for a few months.

    Successful post op gastric bypass

    I was 53 when I had mine. My daughter was 22. Neither of us have any regrates! I have had a lot of surgeries for various things - I wasn't nervous at all about the surgery. My daughter has had 5 surgeries (4 for the same thing) - she wasn't nervous at all either. I'm not sure if the gas pain that people talk about is gas in their abdomen as general pain or the gas/discomfort that is felt in the left shoulder after any abdominal surgery. I have always had horrendous pain in my left shoulder after ANY abdominal surgery. It lasts for 2-3 weeks (but that's just me - because of scoliosis by torso is unique - I had my scoliosis corrected when I was 48 - DON'T WAIT THAT LONG!). My daughter had no troubles at all even though she also has scoliosis (she had hers corrected when she was 15 & has had 3 other surgeries because of the 1st one). But I can tell you our bodies feel so much better since getting all of the weight off because of weight loss surgery! I have lost over 70 (I am very happy with this weight & I feel great!). My daughter has lost over 150 & she is more active than she ever was before! Stick to your docs plan and take your vitamins! Just wear home whatever you wore to the hospital. No need to take an extra set of clothes. Your toothbrush, toothpaste, Biotin mouthwash is a great idea (I like the Walmart brand), phone charger & ChapStick & PJ's (so you don't have to wear the hospital gown once you start moving around). Good vibes & happy thoughts as you drift off to sleep in a few days! I always sing "I Wanna be Sedated" by the Ramones as I am wheeled to the OR.
  10. Interesting read, which makes me wonder at the very start of my weight loss I plunged head first into what seemed menopause and was given estrogen patches... wouldn't this overload me if my body was releasing hormones

    Weight gain

    I have gained about 10lbs and I haven’t been doing anything different. I eat healthy and walk 2 miles a day. My PCP did change me to a birth control pill. Could that be causing weight gain? Or and I on a stall?

    Initial weight vs current weight

    Starting weight: 339 Current weight: 165 Surgery date: 11/10/20 I’m a 5’10 female, age 40. Yeah, I was told I’d end up still in the 200s. Forget that noise, if you use the surgery as a tool and do your own work you can end up at your goal weight.

    As others have said, no, you can’t reverse this. What’s done is done, and you’ll have to start looking forward to the future, not what you liked in the past. If you’re in the first few months post op, this is not the rest of your life. In the future you’re most likely going to be able to eat a lot of the foods you loved, go out to eat, have an active social life, etc. I’m almost 1.5 years out and maintaining a 175 lb loss while enjoying a lot of my favorite foods, going out to eat, and yes, having the occasional drink. I balance it all out with small portion sizes, elimination of some trigger foods, and exercise. Look toward a brighter future. You’ll be able to eat the foods you love, without the fear of binging. Having a family is an amazing experience, and I would give up every favorite meal and “normal” eating experience for what I’ve gained with having my kids. You’ve got a lot to look forward to, keep your focus on the future!

    Oh man, those initial stalls are no joke. I think so many years (decades) of having a stall mean that our weight loss efforts were failing yet again has made us all super paranoid about them. The good news is that especially this early in the game, a stall is temporary and doesn’t really mean much. Just focus on the day-to-day and you’ll get there! Post op is just a short period of time in your journey, you’ll be in onederland before you know it!

    Some questions

    I agree with others. The sleeve is just a tool. If you eat bad you will gain it back. I just lost my grandma and within three weeks of eating slightly bad I gained FOUR pounds that I have to lose again. That’s how easy it would be to gain it over a pound a week and I wasn’t even eating As much as my always been skinny family members. Not trying to be negative just saying that the sleeve doesn’t do all the work for you. It is very easy to choose to eat around it. That being said, it is much easier to make the healthy choice while the hunger hormone is gone (that is fine for MOST people but not all immediately post op for several months). So me for example in the past would’ve thrown up my hands and kept on gaining until I gained it all back but this time I have nipped it in the bud at four pounds and I am working on losing them again plus the 9 more pounds I have to lose to reach goal.

I also am not familiar with that surgery, but the general rule I've heard is that each successive weight loss surgery will have less weight loss, so if you have a sleeve, lose weight, and then have bypass (whether due to GERD or regain) you will not likely lose as much as you did with the initial surgery.
  17. I have never heard of that procedure but I think with all the surgeries that rate of weight loss is very individual. I had sleeve and I was a slower loser. I have heard people who continue to lose for quite some time (like two years out) though so if you stick to the plan the weight should come off even if slower than you hope.

    Weight Loss Journey

  20. I had a RYGB in 2005 and had pretty much kept the weight off until this past Pandemic/COVID19. I went from 160lbs to 217lbs, with constant GERD, heartburn and a fistula. I decided to get a limb lengthening done since the gastric pouch/stomach had not changed in size at all per Dr. Proctor. On January 1st, 2022, I stopped drinking wine and went into the 2 shakes daily (modified diet) then on the week prior to surgery changed to 3 shakes daily. On the day of surgery January 19th, I weighed 209. Today, I am 3 weeks post-op and weigh 200lbs. Spoke with the doctors office and was told that she (PA) has noticed that weight loss with the limb lengthening is slower and not the same with the regular RYGB, Sleeve, Lap-band. Has anyone underwent the Limb lengthening procedure?

    Over 2 mo po and stalled

    I lost such a lot of weight really quickly because of vomiting and my calorie intake was very low. About 200 to 300 cals a day. I couldnt make any protein or water goals. So I had a 5 week stall. Its frustrating. Now I am eating more calories and much more protein and reach my water quota, things are moving downwards again.
  22. Good luck to you! I'm scheduled for the sleeve on Feb 23rd in LA. I haven't lost any weight but a couple of pounds. I lose 1/2 pound a month. Ugh. Love the picture of Huskys. I have a German Sheppard, my son has half husky, half GS beautiful dog.
  23. Update: I got my DEXA scan yesterday. I went down from 51.6% to 41.7%!!! I know I have a long way to go before I'm healthy, but I was excited. I lost about 12 lbs of lean mass, but also lost 50lbs of fat mass. This is since Jun 2021, so two months before my surgery when I'd already lost 40 lbs from my highest weight. I'm trying to decide how long I want to wait until my next scan, but in reality it will likely be dictated more by my travel schedule.
  24. Yes, swimming does make me hungry too, but it doesn't burn as many calories as you might think. The estimates given are based on weight, but your weight doesn't cause you to exert much extra energy in the pool, so they are overestimated that way. Plus, because these calorie estimates are always way too high, that's more than the usual amount of "bonus" calories it says your burning vs what you actually are. I do agree that having a plan for what to eat post-swimming is much better than just grabbing anything. Did the psychologist say she wouldn't approve you for surgery? I would just smile and nod and say you agree with her. Normally, I say to take these psychologist evaluations seriously, but it sounds like this might be an exception. I hope you are able to get your surgery! I haven't gone back to swimming since my surgery, even though I can. I just keep making excuses, so good for you!

    Surprisingly in the last week or so I've lost more weight and I've been less careful about what I eat in terms of counting calories. Maybe I was having too little?
