    3 days to go

im sitting here at work with just 3 nights to go before my banding. and i have to say i am SCARED to death. ive never had any form of surgery or anesthesia before. and aside from being nervous im feeling like an idiot for eating myself to a point that im having surgery to help me lose weight. i have a million random thoughts. do i really wanna do this? what happens if i do? what if i dont? im sick of not wanting to see myself naked in the mirror. tired of the constant guilt over every bite i put in my mouth. tired of felling like a failure for not being able diet successfully on my own. my mom died almost 10yrs ago at the age of 52. after years of suffering severe depression and being morbidly obese most of her life she committed suicide. my deepest fear since my mother's death is ending up as miserable and depressed as she was. i dont expect this surgery to be a magic cure. i know it wont solve all my problems overnight. i just hope its worth. that its really a tool that i can implement to make a positive change in my life. im a nurse and worked in a rehab center for a time. lately ive come to realize that food is truly an addiction just like cocaine or heroine. but its an addiction to a substance that you cant remove from your life completely.thin people tell me all the time to just stop eating so much and ill lose weight. would i have been able to tell one of my heroine addicts to just cut back a bit? to have 3 bags a day instead of 5? as afraid as i am right now i really think this surgery is the right step for me. to be able to utilize a tool that will help me be truly successful.
  2. Hey! Nice to see ya on the boards. My weight loss was actually pretty fast. I lost 45lbs in about 2 months. I'm about a week from being 6 months out and I've lost a total of 67lbs. I haven't lost any weight in about a month now so I think my body has finally hit its "sweet spot". When do you see your surgeon again next? I see mine next week to discuss what happens now and other things on my to do list

    Day 8 post-opt

I was able to eat another jello cup and a sugar free Popsicle It's strange because I can feel my stomach making sounds like its hungry but i don't have an appetite for food. in an hour i will try to drink a protein shake. I've been reading a lot of blogs and comments on here and its making my head spin. I am worried about getting filled. some people said it hurt and they didn't feel good after the shot. I was under the impression that they numbed the port site before injecting you with the needle?? I was happy when I saw my friend gabby yesterday. She gave me a hug and looked at me and said you look great and she noticed that I lost weight. That felt great to hear someone say 327 looked great. I'm sure I am less than that. I just don't want to face the scale because It's not really about the numbers. its about how i feel. coming from 379/380 all the way to the low 300's is awesome. I can walk down a flight of stairs now without slumping over or being out of breath. I can walk on a treadmill for an hour at a pace of 2.0-2.6. and I know once i am able to workout again I will continue to progress. My goal is to be able to run. i have a little niece and a little sister that I want to be able to chase around. since I have an extra day off I will spend it trying to relax and focus on getting better. My life has already changed. I've meet three people here who inspired me and many others whose stories have help me. I wish they were in chicago or close around my hometown. I could use a buddy during these times. it helps to talk to people who know what you are going through. ive vented enough for now. enjoy your day. sorry about my randomness and grammar. I am not going to spend much time worrying about that, simply just expressing myself.

    60lbs to go!!!!!

You look fabulous, both of you. My hubby says he is loosing weight by association. Lol.
  5. A pic before Lapband and a current pic! Only 60lbs. to go!!!!! Can't wait until I reach my goal weight!!
  6. I completely concur. I could not believe that some insurance companies would consider me qualified for surgery when my BMI dropped below 40. If you are short, the BMI calculation doesn't really work. I had 70% body fat according to my scale! I was over 200 lb. and I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes. It also doesn't work well for tall people. Mr. Mac is tall and his BMI makes him a "lightweight" but he's got all his weight in his stomach and most people thought he was fatter than I was with my 41 BMI.
  7. 30 and change off since surgery 11.28.12...stalled at 3 weeks, and another one now at week 7 No real cheats. Eating 3+ small meals, mostly Protein. Trying to increase fluids. Just wondering if any of you were in the same boat as us newbies, only to see major cumulative losses over the next six months or so. It's not that I am a hurry or a race (okay, maybe a little..lol), but just knowing that things do work out, equilibrate, is comforting to know. I saw another poster's log of dates and weights, and it appeared to be a slow steady loss of 1-2 lbs per week. I am really not trying to compare, just wanted to know if this is to be expected and not to get overly concerned. Thanks!

    I'm New Here...

The best way to find the requirements for your surgery is to go to the web site for your policy and search "bariatric" to see what comes up. There should be policy guidance which lists the requirements. Some require a history of trying to lose weight (doctor's records can be enough), others require a monitored weight loss plan - often your surgeon's office already knows the requirements because they do this. Do make a list of questions you want to ask your surgeon. Consider bringing a trusted relative or friend with you to the appointment. My first consult was 3 hours and had to be done after attending an informational seminar at the hospital. There was a lot of information to digest (no pun intended) at that first meeting, so having another set of ears around doesn't hurt. best of luck.
  9. I live about 2 hours away from my family. I went to see them last month but no one ever said that they noticed I was losing weight (well except my aunt who notices EVERYTHING!) but this past weekend I went to visit them and finally people are starting to notice. My grandma said "Honey are losing weight? I just noticed your face is pretty" lmao!! and my mom said "whatever you're doing keep it up because its working". No one came out and asked me how I am losing weight though but my aunt did ask me how much I lost and I didn't tell her. Do you guys answers those types of questions? I am no where near my goal but it still feels good to know people are starting to notice the weight coming off. Ok, so it took 70 pounds to lose before people started to notice my weight loss (or if they noticed before they didn't say anything). How much did you lose before people started to notice? Oh and no one knows about the surgery except my husband.
  10. People started noticing about 20 but now at 50, my clothes are big and my face has shrunk. I measured the other night and my neck went from 19 to 15. I'm being very evasive about questions. I answer the how much weight question. And I say, "no carbs, no sugar, small portions, low calories" to the "what are you doing". None of that's untrue. I do the quick "thanks" and change the subject too.

    Nervous about insurance

Even with the same insurance provider, policies can vary. Are you required to lose weight in order to be approved? This is typically information that your surgeon's office gets from your insurance provider, so I would check with them. You can also check with your insurance provider, but I've personally had issues with customer service reps giving out bad info. If your policy doesn't require any weight loss or exclude you from approval for weight gain, it shouldn't matter. You may also want to ask your surgeon if he or she will do surgery if you've gained weight, as some surgeons won't.

    Help! I self-sabotage!

I totally understand the self-sabotage. I do the same myself. And then when I am rejected or fail, I blame it on the weight and not the real me. Every time things get hard, I run. But this will be our chance for a do-over and break that chain. I am an introvert by nature, so maybe this makes it easier for me to stay in my fat shell. We have each other for support and there are so many people who understand how we feel and what we are going through. We have never had these tools before. My surgery is scheduled for 5/25. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  14. I'm following my plan to the lettter. It's not as strict as yours and I'm taking in about 350-400 calories a day. I'm 13 days out from surgery and not losing. I haven't lost anything in the past 6 days. I'm not holding Water and getting a reasonable amount of exercise. Right now I'd just like to meet one of those food expert jerks who say "calories in calories out - it's that simple" just so I could smack the stupid off of them. I imagine I will begin to lose weight when I can transition to food and go low carb. But that was always the way it worked for me so I'm wondering where the big benefit of this surgery is. I get sick of eating low carb all the time. I'm hoping I'll just get to where I don't care about food at all and can just use it for fuel. Then low carb won't be such a drudgery. Yea, I'm fed up. You can only keep thinking "it will start falling off" for so long and then you start to wonder. With pre-op 580 calories a day for 9 days I am one week short of a month in time and I've lost far less than I would have if I had joined weight watchers.

    Saggy/ Deflated Breast?

I'm so sad about my breast...always thought I would be one to get a reduction because of how big my breast were.....now I'm contemplating a left and getting I guess bigger implants....are there any other options to make them bigger. I'm two years post lapband....already met goal weight so I'm realllly happy but breast are just not cute!!!!!
  18. So I'm 5 days away from my 8 month anniversary of VSG surgery and finally admitting that my old habits and obsession with snacking have not miraculously disappeared because of WLS. On May 28th, I had lost 60 pounds and was so positive that I'd reach goal by my 8 month anniversary. But rather than stay focused, eat healthy and follow the plan, I got over confident and reverted back to snacking on all the high carb, high sugar, high salt comfort foods that had originally caused my weight gain. I stopped going to my monthly support group meetings, stopped my daily involvement in on-line bariatric and weight loss support groups and as a result, I've gained 8 pounds rather than losing the last 6 pounds that would have gotten me to goal. I know what I have to do to get back on track. Any suggestions on how to break my addition to carbs? I'm focused on Protein today with the hope that once I break the carb cycle, I can get back to making better food choices for my late night Snacks. Yes, the honeymoon is over!!

    Healthy Crackers?

I'm on maintenance and didn't use these while I was losing weight. But anyway .... The best crackers I've found -- meaning, relatively high Protein and high Fiber -- are: * Doktor Cracker's Three Seed Crackers * Wasa Multigrain flatbread / crackers You can find these in almost any grocery store, even Walmart. I use these instead of bread and always eat them with something that's high protein. Had 2 Wasa multigrain crackers today with chicken salad for lunch.

    Did You Feel This Way?

This is good practice time for you. Start eating the small protein filled meals. Chew, chew, chew your food. Cut into small pieces etc. That alone will help. If you get hungry try a string cheese or SF popsicle. That kept me from gaining while waiting for first fill.
  21. I had my surgery on 8-11-11. I go back to the dr. on 8-26-11. What is the normal amount of weight lost on the first visit. I had a 5 lb loss during the protein part of the diet and just wondered if there should be a great loss ehen I go back to the dr. I have just started exercising....or walking.
  22. So I had my first (of six) appointments with my bariatric specialist today, who believes with my insurance and situation, I should have no problem being approved for surgery. That being said, he discussed the differences between the sleeve and bypass and before our talk, I was set on the VSG surgery, however now I'm beginning to think that maybe the bypass may be a better option for me. He said that if I'm wanting to lose 60-80lbs, that the VSG surgery is the better choice for slower weight loss, but if I'm looking to lose 100+lbs, I should consider the bypass. I'm currently 5'5", 294.1 lbs and definitely want to lose more than 100lbs, but I've done so much research on VSG that I feel the most comfortable with that option, but also want to give myself the best opportunity to lose the most weight. What are your experiences with loss after either bypass or VSG? I'm not opposed to bypass, it was just never the direction I thought I was headed so I have done little research and feel my nerves all over again! Any advise helps, thank you!

    Frustrated and Need Help

According to my nutritionist after you enter the Maintenance phase, your meals should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs but always put protein first. Fats are important because they help to control hunger. It is common to have some limited weight gain after weight loss surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond this 20 pounds. Most times this weight gain is due to a poor choice of snacks. Snacks should be limited to primarily to whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. Also do not expect to lose weight at a rate similar to right after surgery. Generally if you gained the additional weight over a couple years, then it may take a couple years of watching what you eat to get back down.

    Frustrated and Need Help

My advice will go against the general grain, but I suggest counseling... Here's why. You can lose the weight you regained. However, if you continue to use food as a crutch in times of emotional upheaval, you'll simply regain the weight you lost once again. You already know how to lose weight. Nonetheless, keeping it off is the elusive part. Your head must be in the game to keep it off for life, and maybe counseling can help you develop coping skills that don't involve the comfort of food. Good luck to you. You've got this.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

So trust your gut and do whatever makes you most comfortable. Research makes it seem like bypass patients lose more, but that's far from the truth. My doctor told me straight up, that long term you will loose about the same amount of weight regardless. It also depends on you and how active you decide to be and how well you stick to your diet. Bypass is definitely more complicated of a procedure so recovery time is a tiny bit longer. Also because bypass re-routes your intestines you have to be good with taking your supplements every day and avoid high fat and high sugar foods to avoid dumping syndrome. For that reason i chose the sleeve. I got sleeved in december. It's the best thing i've ever done for me. And the idea of losing 60-80 pounds with the sleeve is complete bullshit. Depending on where you start, you can lose as much as you want with it. I know plenty of people that lost well over 120 pounds with the sleeve and successfully kept it off. I haven't had any side effects or complications.
