    I'm torn..

I was 23 when I had the bypass and now, almost 10 months out, I'm doing really well. Just had another blood test, and everything is perfect. We'll see how I'm doing 5, 10, 20 years from now but really, though there is a higher chance of malabsorption, that in no way pre-determines that you will have malabsorption. I would be seeing deficiencies by now if I had them, especially since my vitamin/supplement-taking has been spotty recently as I'm trying to find a chewable Calcium that doesn't make me gag. I've never heard any doctor or patient talk about the sleeve being for younger patients and the bypass being for older patients. In fact, most of the younger people I know who have had wls chose bypass because they wanted the extra accountability, longer weight loss period, and not have to worry about wanting a revision as so many sleevers do down the road, while most of the older people in my support groups went with the sleeve.

    I'm torn..

@@hernewselfie At 22 there is no way in hell I would go with bypass and have to deal with malabsorption issues for the rest of my life. Too many years in front of you. I started out at about your weight and I have lost almost 130 pounds is less than a year. You are a lot younger than me, it should come off you even faster. My Dr said the sleeve is a better option for young active patients. They use the bypass on older, inactive people. Good luck on whatever you choose. Also later on, if you are like 50 and you regain a ton of weight, you can revise to DS. Once you have bypass there is nothing to revise to right now. If you fail at it, you just failed. And people regain all the time with bypass, just like everything else.

    I'm torn..

I was also torn as my surgeon said both would work for me. I decided on the bypass finally. Mostly because of the years of data to back it up. Also, my insurance only will cover once. If I decided to go from sleeve to revision to the bypass it would be out of my pocket.
  4. One of the things that encouraged me to push myself to do revision from and to bypass is my current job I have a position where I interact with outside executive customers and internally with my company executives so I always have to be professional. I feel being this big as much as I try I still don't look as "clean and sharp" and the confidence goes along with that. Plus buying all the plus size clothing is just way too much, traveling is a pain because seats are small, belts don't fit etc. I love this job, it's very stressful and demanding but it's a very good opportunity for me to move up eventually. I can see myself being so much better at once I lose the weight.

    My new live journey

@@lovemyself Good luck! Glad you researched and came to a decision. I just had the sleeve (revision from band) on 5-25 and feel good. I'm very glad that I took action. Keep in touch.
  6. @@VSGAnn2014 I know that my company follows Medicare guidelines when it comes to my particular plan, and they need "just" the two comorbidities. Surprisingly Fatty liver isn't a comorbidity - that kind of blew my mind. I should be fine on BMI, according to the last doctor's visit I'm at 241 lbs which has me at 38.9 BMI at 5'6". I've been relatively low carb for awhile, I'm considering putting them back on the menu prior to the consult and that should shoot me up with Water weight. Only 7 lbs more and I'm at a 40 BMI so it's definitely doable with water weight. I also have lymphedema in my left leg and it can really vary. @@jaxmom I'm so glad they covered the removal and revision! My coverage won't take care of any complications related to services that were not authorized by them, which is why I haven't considered heading to Mexico to have it done, though that is in the realm of possibility if I can't get it approved. This site has definitely been an awesome resource - it was for me when I was first banded, and it's turning into a great help again.
  7. They just confirmed my date today for my revision from lap-band to sleeve for next Monday at 8am. Pre-diet started. So nervous! I have pre-op testing tomorrow and I can not wait to get this done! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I had my band removed 2 years ago, and I'm now going in for a consultation to see if I qualify for the sleeve and what exactly I'll have to do in order to get it covered. Since it wasn't a revision at time of band removal, I'm 99% sure it's going to be treated as if I am coming in from the start. I got a modified referral for the consultation only, and was told by the bariatric case manager with my insurance that I still need to meet all of the requirements. I've got a BMI between 35 and 40, so I have to show that I still have the comorbidities. If I had revised to bypass at the time of removal, it would have still required a referral, I just think it would have been approved without any question. I wanted the sleeve though, which wasn't covered at the time... so here I am. See if your surgeon will submit an authorization request for a revision due to intolerance, have them slap on the other comorbidities (sleep apnea and hypertension) and go from there. You can always appeal. If you have any chart notes etc from other specialists that you've had to see, have the surgeon include those. The more information the better.

    Hi! New here!

Well hello to the story of my life. I was banded Oct 2006. I lost 40lbs and got preggo. Continued to lose during pregnancy. Ended up with healthy baby and down almost 100lbs! Woohoo. Then baby #2 had a slight unfill and bam hallo healthy baby and all 100lbs! Lmao. I just had the sleeve revision and hernia repair May 25,2016. I had mucho swelling after procedure so the first couple of days were probably worse than normal. I am now on my 5th day post surgery. Drinking all liquids with no problem whatsoever. I'm excited and am so ready for soft foods...lol Sent from my XT1565 using the BariatricPal App

    Hi! New here!

Hey y'all! I am so glad to hear your stories. I was banded October 2013, the too loose/ too tight yo-yo for over a year, emptied March 2015 for 6 weeks for a concentric slip, refilled, too loose/ too tight again yo-yo for another year, then the emergency room in distress April 2016. Thankfully un-filling was enough to relieve the distress, but in testing they found again, my band has slipped. My insurance has approved the sleeve revision for 2 June, this Thursday. I am currently on my day 8 of 10 days of pre-op liquids and looking forward to what my future holds. The band gave me restriction of portions, but I was always hungry. I am happy with the loss of weight I was able to keep off with my band, but my excitement has been renewed because I am sure I can get off a considerable amount more. I keep checking back to this site for all the information I can get. It is really good to hear stories that I can relate to. Thank you for posting about yours!
  11. I was banded back in 2012, initially lost 60lbs, then had a slip and gained 40 back. Just started the process of getting my band removed/revised into the sleeve. My surgeon said the following senerios could happen, 1. I have my band removed and my stomach is in good enough condition he can do the sleeve in the same surgery.....but because I've already had 2 gastric surgeries I could be faced with the following: too much scar tissue resulting in having to choose between 2 surgeries one for the band removal then waiting a month and getting the sleeve OR he can do one surgery and getting the bypass instead, I guess the bypass is easier and safer to do with a lot of scar tissue. And I have to choose before the surgery so he knows what to do. Any thoughts?? Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App
  12. I'm revising from sleeve to bypass on 7/1 because of severe GERD. I'll admit I'm going off the rails a bit. I have a perfect sleeve (other than the fact it's trying to kill me with acid) that tolerates all food. Do I know how my frankenstomach will behave after surgery? No. So while I stayed on plan 98% of the time during weight loss (and I'm maintaining a 120lb loss to prove it) I am eating foods now that may bother me after surgery. Last night I had ice cream. Did I eat a pint? No, but ice cream is not something that is a part of my every day diet. Did I enjoy it, yes! Am I going to eat it every day until surgery? No. I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't think a "food funeral" means your not ready for surgery, that you're lying to yourself, or that you won't be successful. We all start this process in our own way and I don't believe I'm hurting myself by having ice cream. Maybe I'm speaking in the voice of a 2-year post op but I really think you need to do what you need to do to get to the starting line. However once you're at that line (the pre op diet, whatever that means to you) you need to be fully committed. I wish all of us luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Advice please :-)

Thanks for your reply and words of encouragement. It means a lot. I haven't told any family or friends about my weight loss ops. Just my partner. So don't have many to talk to or get advice from. I've already been researching the procedure of going from bypass to BPD if this one fails in the future. Stupid I know. I'm only 3 weeks out! I think your right about being a revision patient. This is my 3rd weight loss op. 1st SAGB, 2nd Sleeve, now Bypass. Maybe I'm expecting too much too soon and fearing the worst after past failures / complications. I'm in a remote off shore location with limited shopping options and and have a few boxes of optislim and Optifast and a couple of tubs of whey Protein powder so was just planning on using them up until they're all gone then was hoping to be on more regular style food by the time I've used then up. I have about 6 weeks worth left. I just used the fish because it was what I had in the freezer and knew it was a good protein source. I just poached them in a little fat free calcium added milk with peas, onion and garlic and pureed it. Enough to last a few days. Then I have some chicken breasts in the freezer, was going to slowly boil them and throw in some roasted garlic, carrot and onion and blitz them up with a bit of stock and eat that for a few days then see how I'm going. Yes absolutely if you have any recipes that would help me out I'd be most grateful. Also I guess I could try to eat more than one meal a day but I'm thinking the longer I continue with high Protein shakes and less actual food the better my chances of losing weight?! Also I am sipping on Water all day, few cups of tea here and there, optislim / protein shakes, then my 4 tbsp fills me up for over an hour then I'm almost relieved when the hour is up and I can get back to my fluids. BMs are also being a problems. Going from constipated. Almost unable to pass to diarrhea taking daily coloxyl and senna but never know if I'm going to make it worse or better by taking them if you know what I mean. I was taking lactulose and prune juice initially but stopped that when I realised how much sugar / carbs where in them. Jeez you'd think by now on my 3rd op I'd be more of an expert with these things by now!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Advice please :-)

One other thing - I just read your other posts and see that you are a revision patient. My understanding is that revision patients tend to lose slower. Given that information, I would say you are doing OUTSTANDING! Give it some time. You have been through this before and I can only imagine how anxious you are given the past surgeries, but try to put that behind you and just press on. You got this!
  15. So.... I've been approved and waiting on my surgery date. How exciting and nervous at the same time. Are there any members from North Dakota on this site? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Any regrets?

You are post op. Please trust your choice, follow all dr. Instructions... Many of us are the happiest and healthiest we have been in years, thanks to the band. Don't believe everything on the internet. The band works for a lot of people just fine... They may not post much. For some it does not, and they post about it and their revisions. Now that you are on the other side, welcome and try to enjoy what could be the best decision of your life! Please keep us updated. Ps. NO REGRETS
  17. I use to work for the surgeon that created the MGB (Dr. Rutledge) and had the surgery in 2002 with a revision in 2003. Like all gastric surgeries, this is just a tool until you change your lifestyle. Protein is every important and you will gain weight with any of them if you eat a lot of slider (carb) food. Good Luck, you have made a great choice.
  18. Hi everyone, I was revised from sleeve to RNY March 16th due to complications and severe case of GERDS and sadly I'm really regretting I'd rather had kept suffering from previous complications... I have yet to eat anything that I can keep down.... Not to mention my weight loss is at a complete halt for over a month no matter how much I work out....and I'm completely disappointed in both of these surgeries and wish I never had surgery I'm still over 200lbs.... band revision to GB

@@Sheriberi Did you have much of pain where the port was after revision? I am 2 weeks out and that area is hard and swollen, scar itself is healed and is fine but inside is what's bothering me. Wonder how long this should last.

    I'm torn..

I had the band and also was deciding between the two, I ended up going with bypass because I had heartburn issues and also didn't want to have to revise to bypass in the future of the sleeve wouldn't work for me as revisions tend to lose slower and I need to lose over 115 lbs.

Upper GI done, hopefully one step closer

One individual in our Bariatric Support Group Meeting had a band to RNY gastric bypass surgery revision because his band was wearing away into his stomach and the condition became life threatening.

    band revision to GB

One of the individuals in our Bariatric Surgery Support Group meeting went from a lap band to RNY gastric bypass revision. His band started to wear into his stomach and it became a life-threatening situation for him. He was pleased with his revision. Lost a lot of weight. I think they made his pouch a little smaller than most because of the scaring from the band removal. As a result he was not able to eat as much as most RNY patients. But that did not bother him. He lost a lot more weight with RNY than with the band.

    I'm torn..

I'm 9 months post op and I chose the bypass for a few reasons. First, I wanted the extra accountability. Second, a lot of people who get the sleeve end up wanting, getting, or wanting but not being able to afford the bypass. Why would I cut into my body and risk my life twice, when odds are, I would want the bypass eventually? Also, for people who start high like us, the bypass is often better because statistically, bypass patients lose more than sleeve patients. Not to mention, MUCH more data exists for the bypass than the sleeve. People who got the lapband before there was a lot of long term data often really regret it and the majority of them ended up getting revisions anyway (seeing a trend here? ). I decided once and for all that if I was going to go through the pain and difficulty and recovery of a major abdominal surgery, I was going to do get the most bang for my buck, the most accountability, the most weight loss, the highest chances of long term success, and only cut into once. For all of these reasons, the bypass was what I went with in the end. I can honestly say I have no regrets at all. I've lost over 150 pounds since surgery 9 months ago. I feel amazing, I've had no complications, and my life is pretty damn good. I'm finishing school in the fall and moving on with my life. My hunger has been returning now, but it's so incredibly manageable; when I eat a small amount of healthy food, the hunger is gone. This was my biggest dream: to be able to live a normal life out of the control of food and my extra weight. I've still got about 65 pounds to go (including skin. No idea how much extra skin I have). But I'm seeing visions of my goal as it approaches and I can say I would do this a thousand times more if it always resulted in this. highest weight: 442 weight when the bariatric program started: 402 day of surgery: 387 current weight: 235 goal weight: 170

You're referring to the DS (sleeve was originally the first part of the DS). Although there are people who do sleeve-to-bypass revisions, too.
