When life gives you a bag of lemons, grab your Splenda and make some Lemonade. Since I'm down for the count with this pesky ulcer, there's no time like the present to dust off an old hobby of mine, Amateur Radio. I last worked with it almost 7 years ago. I am an FCC licensed General Class HAM radio operator. For anyone that cares, my call sign is KF7SVX. It's time for me to upgrade my license to Extra Class! I spent the past few days on marathon study sessions, despite feeling ill. This is something I've wanted to do for some time as the Extra is the unrestricted license which lets you use all amateur bands. It's very hard and the last time I studied for an exam was 7 years ago. It don't get easier when you get older, ha! Now I'm ready to test on May 24th. It felt so good to have something to provide some discipline. Of course the studying must continue. If it weren't for bariatric surgery, I might never have revisited the hobby. I'm scheduled to have my EKG tomorrow and the scheduler mentioned something about a holter monitor. Did anyone else have to do this or is it normally just a strip EKG that is needed? I think the scheduler misunderstood the order because it says ambulatory referral for EKG, which I think it just means that it is an outside order from my bariatric hospital to my clinic. Anyone else had to go through the holter thing? I'm really hoping that it's just a quick monitor....

Which flavor have you tried of the bariatric advantage calcium citrate chews?

You probably need a ton more carbs than you're getting. That's what's so interesting about switching from a bariatrics eater to an athletic eater. Your lack of carbs may be part of the problem.
-
Talk to a dietician. Not a bariatrics specialist: a sports specialist who works with athletes. He or she can help you understand your fat/muscle mix and how you need to fuel yourself for your activities. Switching my allegiance from bariatrics to sports made all the difference to me and was pivotal to understanding what my ideal weight actually was and how to maintain it and an active lifestyle.

I use Unjury protein with almond milk. It is made for bariatric patients and dissolves better. I gag on protein water too. I add plain protein to chicken broth and tomato soup.

Hi everyone, I was banded 10 years ago and have been a member here since then. I am still maintaining my weight despite having the band removed which I know is unusual. As a result I have developed a real interest in what happens to people's identity following all types of bariatric surgery, so much so that I am formally researching this issue as a Masters level student pre PhD in Psychology. I experienced some really interesting changes as a result of my surgery and have seen many people have struggles and succeed over the years. I think understanding that process better may help others - including support services, to navigate their journeys, through what can be an exciting but equally as tough time personally and that's why I am doing this. Our very kind forum founder Alex Brecher has given his approval for me to carry out my research through this wonderful forum membership. I am looking for people who are willing to talk to me about their journey and answer a few questions just in a conversation. This is expected to take around 30 minutes and can happen in the most convenient way for you including Skype, phone call, messaging or email, wherever you may be in the world, all of which are at my cost of course. You can remain anonymous, the contributions will generate results which will result in an academic paper but no personal details will be divulged. I know I have received a great deal of help and information from this site over the years and I would like to pay back and contribute to that going forwards, it would be really great if some of you could help me to do that too by giving me half an hour of your time. Please respond to this post or message me directly if you are interested and I can give more information and organise some time to talk. Thanks so much for reading this and please do share your story with me. Rachel AKA Weightinggame.

Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate chews (with Vitamin D) are very good. Easy to chew and swallow. And tasty. Bariatric Advantage Multivitamin mixed fruit chews are NOT GOOD. The serving size is two tablets. They are big and taste bad. I am stuck with them for the next 30 days though. Hoping I can just cut them with my pill cutter and swallow the pieces whole without chewing??? They almost made me gag.

Can I cut (instead of chew) my chewable multivitamin?
AngelaZ posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I started vitamins today. I have Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate caramel chews (yummy!) which I have no problem chewing. They taste good. However, the Bariatric Advantage Multivitamin mixed fruit chews are testing my gag reflex. I chewed and swallowed the first one. It was distasteful to me to put it mildly. I had to immediately wash my mouth out with water. I have to take another. Can I just cut it with my pill cutter and swallow the whole pieces with water? Does that way interfere with absorption? Oh man, they do NOT agree with me. LOL -
Oh, the face zaps are terrible. I get those and really bad nausea if I miss a day. I don't necessarily like taking them, but I've been weaned off three times now and I'm fine for 6-8 weeks and then the anxiety and panic attacks set in. I think they make me a more functional, calmer person and quite frankly, just like bariatric surgery is a tool, so is Effexor. I can't imagine trying to get to surgery without being in my best mental state and for me, medication happens to be part of that. I have my consult with the surgeon today and will be starting my two weeks of whatever fun diet they tell me to do tomorrow. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

Eating feels like a chore. Does that end?
S@ssen@ch replied to Topher_B's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Frustr8, I don't think we're talking about true "food aversion", but more lack of appetite and possibly "food frustration." Lack of appetite is an intended side effect of surgery and frustration can come with that. Food aversion is defined as being repulsed by a particular food and can sometimes lead to nausea/vomiting at the mere thought of that food. It's as if the taste of the food is toxic. If anyone has those things going on, they should certainly notify their surgeon and consider a referral to a dietician/nutritionist and a counselor. In my opinion, the issue is that our relationship with food has changed. Before surgery, it is likely that our lives revolved around food, the pleasure and comfort it gave. Post surgically, our lives still largely revolve around food but now it's focused on making sure our body has the fuel it needs. It's probably not even pleasurable anymore. As you describe above, you "no longer have the urge to engulf food..." That's normal. It's also normal to be indifferent as in the "I do not care" comment. I myself have that. I eat because I have to. I make sure I have things that taste good to me, but I could easily go long periods of time without eating. You indicated you're concerned that your weight isn't melting off. Mine isn't either. We all lose at our own pace and as long as we continue to fuel our bodies within the guidelines of post bariatric eating, it will. Please note that I am not a doctor. If you are seriously concerned that you have a food aversion or that you're post surgical path is not normal, consult your doctor. -
Witchypoo72 I think you are in Australia? Contact my bari-bud Taoz, she recently had her surgery in Adelaide, she's Avery nice person, will also have good consul , a great healthy cook. Although Sosewsue61's advice Taoz and Jules1 in Canberra may know some extra things Aussie to advise. In the meantime, I'm sending you a virtual hug from Ohio USA , remember we all are your Bariatric sisters and brothers wherever we may be😝

If you can't stand the taste of chewable multivitamin tablets, see if you can find a suitable bariatric multivitamin capsule (in Australia I'm using bnmulti capsule multivitamins and their chewable calcium tablets which taste ok). If the protein supplements you have tried don't suit you and you can't get at least 60g protein from the soft foods you are eating then you need to try some other protein supplement options until you find one that suits you. Protein waters are much easier to drink (the Stevia sweetened Aussie one I use tastes a bit like Gatorade). If you're not able to keep down purees/soft solids or are frequently vomiting and are not drinking enough water or other liquids you are at risk of dehydration and nutrient deficiencies. Please contact your surgeons support team and change to a different nutritionist if the current one isn't responsive and isn't assisting you. Nourishing soups made with home made chicken stock are what's carried me through most of my 2 weeks post op liquids phase, and I'm moving on to both puree and soft solids after surgeons follow up today. I'll be getting some scrambled egg tomorrow, and some lovely soft poached fresh fish.

Vitamins & Supplements Which are best, or what do you like?
Apple203 replied to lorik402's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I like Nutrametrix Isotonix 'cause I can mix up one 8-ounce concoction in the AM and I don't have to think about it for the rest of the day. Surgeon says its fine to consume all of the calcium at once this way. I just restocked for 3 months -- $125, so it isn't cheap. A week ago, I got Bariatric Advantage vitamin and calcium capsules and tablets and tried that for a day -- damn thing got stuck and I was uncomfortable for over half an hour. Plus multi-dosing. Not for me. -
I am going through Texas Bariatric Specialists, Dr. Patel is the lead surgeon, but my surgeon will be Dr. Reddy. The prices on their web site are fairly accurate. My actual surgery cost will be $8,999.00 for gastric sleeve performed in their surgical center. If the hospital was required the cost would be $13,000.00. This price includes life time follow up in their clinics, which is a big reason why I chose them. Also, they have an awesome success rate, lots of surgeries completed, and a clinic located close to where I live. If you have any health insurance your primary may cover some of the other testing required prior to surgery. My expenses prior to surgery, sleep study, psych eval, nutrition appointment, labs, swallow study and pending EKG, Chest X-RAY, more labs and 2 more office visits will total between $3,500-$4,000. The labs were the most expensive thing. I have paid for everything to date, but will use Care Credit for the actual surgery cost which they collect prior to surgery (I will be paying at my next appointment this Friday). My surgery date is 6/11/18. There are other medical credit options as well, Care Credit just had a better interest rate for pay off within two years and since I had to open a credit line at least this one can be used for vet bills as well! I will also be receiving documents from the Clinic for medical Tax right off (between the surgery and my 17 year old's allergy shots, I am hoping Uncle Sam doesn't get anything next tax year). This was the right choice for me, but everyone's situation is different and it appears that Mexico is much cheaper and the hotels in the pics look awesome. https://texasbariatricspecialists.com/pricing/

How would you have reacted?
Sosewsue61 replied to EsoKev's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It may have been a 'left-handed' compliment of sorts - that you appeared mobile and healthy enough to do weight loss on your own. It wasn't that long ago that bariatric patients needed to be a lot larger than 40 bmi to even be considered. You are not likely to have any more interactions with this nurse. -
My bariatric surgeon documented my rashes with each appointment and I took pics for six months. I also had back pain noted as well. All of that was sent to my plastics guy and they took their own photos and submitted. The surgery is closer to 12,000 here in Iowa.

I Take one ProCare Health Bariatric Multivitamin in the morning & Calcium Citrate (from Costco) in the evening and I’m done! The price is hard to beat & they cover everything! https://procarenow.com/product/bariatricmivchewcitrus/ -
I went in today for one of my pre-ops tests. Mind you, this was at an ambulatory surgical center that my bariatric team uses for test and such (EGD, pulmonary, etc.). The nurse who was wheeling me into the room for my procedure asked me why I was being scoped today. I told her I was going through the bariatric program and she said, "You don't look like the kind of person who needs that surgery." I was stunned and just held my breath and didn't say anything. She's a clinic nurse and not at all involved with my bariatric program, but it hit hard. She knew nothing about my comorbidities or general health and strictly made an assessment on the fact that my BMI is 40 or how I "looked" lying on the bed. How would you have reacted? Should I bring this up with my care team?

Weirdest coments you've gotten since WLS
Frustr8 replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
According to my former Bariatric Surgeon I am 180 pounds too heavy for my height. Sweet Mother Magnolia can you imagine the size of the industrial vacuum🗿 it would take for liposuction on me? It does boggle the mind, doesn't it?😝 -
How'd you know you had an ulcer?
Frustr8 replied to Sprinkles1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I have gastritis and Hector, which one is causing my pain. Gripy pain ,mid upper abdomen going over to under right ribcage. You eat and 2 hours later it returns Milk doesn't help a whole lot, coffee, spices and peppermint intensifies the gripe. You want to bend over your forearm , thinking the pressure will somehow stop it. If you do manage to eat, you can eat only a small until you feel over-full. And where, eating might have once satisfied you it doesn't help now. Honestly, the only, relief I get is due to my extre strength PPI Dexilant. Protein shakes don't upset it at all, isn't that strange? Should I also be on Carafate? Don't know, my gastroenterologist closed his, practice here and went to a larger city multi-docttor group, 6 days before my,next scheduled appointment. Now I am faced, with asking my,PCP or asking someone affiliated, with my new Bariatric Surgeon in Columbus. I'm not rocking the boat at this, point.😪 -
Lots of questions and anxiety
Frustr8 replied to Caroline125's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you have enough money for DS vitamins? I've been told they average $150-200 monthly. Its the most radical bariatric surgery and has the highest monthly upkeep.😭 -
One disturbing trend I've noticed recently at this site...is a lack of balanced weight loss experiences in your moderation team. The bariatric community is diverse. There are older people, younger people, people who want to lose weight to uber fitness levels and people who just want to improve their health. There are 200 pound people who want to weight 130....and there are 400 pound people who would love to reach 250. I wish the moderation team represented ALL of these experiences...instead of JUST the smaller people. The VAST MAJORITY of people who have weight loss surgery....statistically are not going to reach goal. Most of us will end up on one side or the other of a 60-70% excess weight loss. It would be nice to see some moderators who understand and continue to live this struggle. There is little input here from people who have weighed over 350 pounds. I'd like to see a moderator whose journey includes these weight ranges. It would be nice to see more male voices in moderation, since while they are in the minority...we do have a significant male population. I'd like to see an older moderator who is sensitive to weight loss after menopause. Can we please have some moderators who are not JUST women who started in the 200 pound range, in their 30's and 40's...who are now fitness junkies? We desperately need some balance.
