    July 2022 peeps!

I'm 3 days out post op and I'm feeling better still have that strange feeling when I drink and sometimes when I move. Sleeping on my side has a very strange feeling now. I'm going to try a protein shake today ok'd by my surgeon. My punctures where the tools went in still are still very tender but I'm getting there. I have not stepped on the scale as of yet...my stomach is still bloated

Hi and welcome to the forums Steve 👋. Pre op diets vary. Some can only have liquids and others can have a small meal once a day on their pre op diets. I was allowed to have a small meal, so to me pre op diet wasn't so bad. I feel like my post op diet is harder because it's three weeks of liquids only. It's pretty extreme as far as post op diets go. So along with the weakness of recovering from surgery, only having liquids is tough imo. The struggle is worth it tho. You'll do fabulous! Best wishes on your surgery and journey!

Thank you SO MUCH for the information on the protgold protein!!!! I'm 5 weeks post-op and so sick of protein shakes. I went on and ordered the berry flavor bottle with 1 oz servings.
  4. I brought a loose fitting t-shirt dress to wear home, just like Tomo did. At the hospital, I slept and walked the halls around and around, in between them taking bloodwork or checking vitals every 2 hours. The next morning (one night stay) after showing that I could drink all of my fluids, I was discharged early evening. ⭐ Items I brought in small overnight bag - you won'r need much! ⭐ 1. Light-weight robe (walking the halls) 2. Slippers 3. Phone, phone charger 4. Toiletries (toothbrush, paste, shampoo, conditioner) 5. Loose fitting cotton dress to wear home/extra underwear 6. If you don't already have one, it's definitely worth investing in a heating pad for when you get home. It helps the soreness of your tummy SO MUCH! The hospital will have one for you to use while you're there. The dress is Universal Threads Knit Tank dress from Target ($15) . Sooooooooooo comfy!!!!!!! Here's the thread in case you want to check it out. https://www.target.com/p/women-39-s-racer-back-knit-tank-dress-universal-thread-8482-green-m/-/A-84777392?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000014846111&CPNG=PLA_Women%2BShopping_Brand|Women_Ecomm_AA&adgroup=SC_Women&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=9031508&targetid=pla-300925489891&ds_rl=1241788&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1248099&gclid=Cj0KCQjw54iXBhCXARIsADWpsG84noB9hlvFUs5V9l4BFt4xeDVXndX96CxW8Ht5cMV-UYdDMiivD2oaAubsEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds * Tip - the more you walk, the better you'll feel and eliminate gas pains Good luck to you!!! You're going to do great and be so happy to be on the other side!!!

Congratulations on your decision Steve! I think you have the right mindset. It’s not a magic wand. It’s just a tool in your toolbox of nutrition, exercise, mental health and support. I had the sleeve March 1st. If you get through the first 3 days of the preop diet and don’t give in, it will pay off big time that was the hardest for me. After that it was easier & easier everyday and made the post op diet easier as well. Good luck to you.
  6. Looking for new sleeve buddies! I’m 1.5 weeks post op and things seem to be getting a little difficult! I actually WANT food again eghh! Honestly, I feel like you don’t truly understand this process unless you go through it! Don’t be shy, say hello and let’s support each other during this journey 🙂

You got this!! When I had the sleeve I cried every day during the liquid phase, It was during the super-bowl! I was sooo hungry I sucked on a piece of pork rind. LOL

    July 2022 peeps!

Oh gosh Kevin, you definitely have a firmer set of rules! One thing I was surprised at is how different the pre and post op diets are. For example I had a low carb low fat liver shrinking diet but I did not have a liquid pre op diet, I just had to stop eating at midnight the night before surgery. Some people are on weeks of liquids. But also, there may be something to be said for that for folks with higher BMI for surgery. I did read a post of someone whose surgeon went in and back out again because liver was too big. I’m generally a rule follower but I agree, if I was told I couldn’t even have cottage cheese until week 5 I might cry! And cheat a bit. I hope the next few weeks for you pass quickly and you’re back to eating real food soon! Cay

    July 2022 peeps!

Oh, I get it! That's terrible! In my third week. Any kind of ground meat or fish. Today, dietitian let me start on mushy veggies. Soon good! Trying different ways to cook ground meat. Kind of hard to be original. Having luck finding recipes on keto diet. Very few carbs. Good luck!

    August surgery buddies!

Hello Tammy! Welcome. My surgery is scheduled for August 19th. I will be having gastric bypass along with hiatal hernia repair. I saw my surgeon for my last preop visit today. I start the liquid diet one week before my surgery. It is all getting so very real now.

    July 2022 peeps!

Cay, Sounds like you are doing well, as am I. You are one day ahead of me, and I'm jealous of your diet plan. I met with my surgeon's group's dietician and she wants me to follow the plan to the T and it's super conservative. When I questioned anything on the plan, she told me to stay off the internet. Yeah, right. The only soft food I graduated to today (week 3 plan)is I can have a half banana, cream of wheat, and oatmeal. In week 5 I can finally have Cottage cheese, cooked beans and soft veggies. Scrambled egg in week 5 and baked fish and tuna in week 6. Ugh. You know, the stricter they are with these things, the more patients are going to "cheat".

Hello everyone. My name is Steve and on the 30th of August I'll be having my gastric sleeve surgery done. On the 9th I start my pre op diet. I've built it up in my mind that this is truly going to be a life changing surgery. I've struggled for much of my adulthood to hold down a job and have a balanced social life. I am currently 374 pounds and 6'2. I know the surgery won't be a magic 🪄 if you will, but I'm hoping it will serve as a catalyst to a better quality of life. I'm a bit nervous about the pre-op diet which begins on the ninth of July from the standpoint of how hungry I envision myself being. I live in Northern California and am traveling down to Tijuana for the surgery. I notice on some posts people are looking for a surgery buddy or something to that effect and I suppose I may be open to that. I rarely if ever post on any site or forum ( I don't use social Media) but reading many of your posts inspired me to say something. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. Another weird NSV but shopping less and having a fuller pantry. Because of how little I can eat, I don't need to buy groceries like I used to. I use to spend so much money on groceries and go through them within a week because I ate so much. But now I'm spending less money and my pantry is fuller longer. It almost feels like a bariatric super power as I see my roommate buy hundreds of dollars worth of groceries and go through it within a week! I can make one 100 dollar trip last 20 days! Of course I spend a fortune ordering my fairlife shakes online hahaha Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. I feel this! I went out last week on Friday to the bars and walked 4 miles and went dancing. My friend who is a bit heavier was complaining of being sore the next day and I didn't feel any soreness when in the past, my legs and knees would've been in pain. Def an NSV for me. I cheated on my Pre op

You are a whole 7 days from surgery, you will be fine, just don't go outside your guidelines again. Stick to your pre op diet like glue. Its torture, we all know it because we have done it and succeeded in shrinking our livers so the surgery was safe to go ahead. About 3 weeks ago somebody posted that the surgeon began the surgery and stopped because the patient had a huge liver. They were devastated. You can do this

What are your go to meals?

When I'm on the road, I eat the Starbucks cheese and fruit box (minus the crackers) for lunch a lot. I get a lot of chili, salads, fish, and chile rellenos. I am on the road about 6 days a week on average. If I'm home, I cook stews with chicken thighs or meals with ground turkey.
  18. We've had really extreme heat in many of the cities I've been working and vacationing in in the last month, and I've been a lot less bothered by it than before I lost 120 lbs. I can feel that it's too hot, but I don't feel cranky and miserable, and I am even able to walk outside early in the morning for a few miles. On the other hand, this week I'm in San Francisco where it's 61 and indoors I'm wear long underwear, tops and bottoms, under pants and a long sleeve shirt and a fleece... and my legs are under a blanket at my desk! So, some good some bad...

    August surgery buddies!

I just had my surgery on 7/25, currently 3 days out. I’m reading comments about the 2 week diet and it really wasn’t bad. I used to drink way too much Diet Coke everyday and stopped cold turkey for the diet. The protein shakes, protein bars, and small dinner were enough to keep me satisfied (for the most part). Each day I’ve been home has gotten much better. 3 days out and I’m not as sore and have been finally able to drink an entire protein shake. I haven’t had any appetite at all. If your feeling nervous that is understandable. I thought of cancelling mine too but then realized I’d come to far to back out.

    August surgery buddies!

One week until go-time. Having my gastric sleeve surgery on 8/4. One week into my pre-op diet. Hasn’t been as rough as I thought it would be. More mental hunger than physical hunger(thankfully the protein shakes are doing a decent job of keeping my hunger at bay). Energy levels are certainly not where they usually are. But it’s all for a good cause. I appreciate hearing everyone’s stories of how they are navigating this adventure we are all on. It’s reassuring to hear that the struggle is real, and not just in my head, and that a lot of people are finding success on the “other side”. Good luck to one and all!

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi July friends! Well, I’m two weeks and a day out from surgery today. Everything is fantastic so far. Just some very mild ache in the healing incision area when I first get up in the morning. I don’t know how much weight I’ve lost but my clothes are far more comfortable. I’ll weigh myself next week because they’ll ask at my next appointment but I’m trying to focus on being healthy and strong which works best for my personal mental health. Every food I have tried so far I have tolerated just fine. I just progressed to “mechanical” food which sounds very space-age but really is just anything you don’t have to cut with a knife. I’m going to try some fish this weekend. Chicken was just fine (I chewed it well) and cooked vegetables. Also scrambled egg and egg salad and egg foo yong made with minced chicken. A lot of eggs. For now I am not being very adventurous as I’m finishing off all the food I cooked and prepped for the soft stage. I am still drinking one shake a day to get to 80-90g protein. I can’t do it without the shake or I’d be eating all day. Hope you are all having a wonderful day and sending good healing thoughts to the folks who had/are having surgery this week. Cay

    New Member/Revisions

I can't speak on revisions but when I was deciding on sleeve over bypass everything I read told me bypass was more effective and my doctor confirmed it. As far as warning signs there aren't any, you will start to feel full and a "heaviness" and very uncomfortable. If you eat too much too fast you may regurgitate/ throw up. Your pouch will only take what it can take. In the 7 weeks since my bypass surgery I've thrown up 2x and each time I wasn't paying attention and either took too big of a bite or ate too much too fast. I also went from GERD every other night pre-op to none post-op. I'm off my Diabetes meds and IBS meds. I haven't had a single regret.

Hi Brennan! I had the same feeling. I'm a little over two weeks out now and it seemed to have resolved itself. I know, it's a weird feeling.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

125 down is just amazing! I do get the occasional day of bad eating - not too many - but I try to get back on the horse the next day with protein first, which has worked so far. Vacations are difficult - eating goes all topsy-turvy. Good luck with the 10lbs this month - that was almost my maximum rate of loss right after surgery!! It's about a pound a week now but I'm happy with that. How much more would you like to lose in total @ForMyOhana?

    Best Protein Shake,?

Not quite what you asked but, by far my favorite has been collagen/Bone broth powder, 20g protein for 20g powder 90 calories, and unlike whey protein, it doesn't curdle at high temps. Has a very mild "dusty" flavor which you can't taste at all, I put it in everything, coffee, soups (broth, tomato, chicken), recipes with sauce like pulled pork, cooked fruit, apple sauce, mashed potato, jelly(jello), spagettios, beans. You name it I add it. 3 weeks out I was having it added to mashed potato, strained chicken noodle and broth a lot (plans vary). Protein shake-wise, not sure if you have it in the US but I like Ufit shakes a lot, especially the Fudge Brownie. Grenade is more calorie-dense but there very good. No premier protein in the UK always jealous as it's the most youtube recommended.
