Once You Reach Goal..did You Change It?

Jennifer, I have to smile and roll my eyes, I just was thinking the same thing. I have also reached and surpassed my goal. I wanted to be a size 10 and now I am a size 6, I started as a size 24. Now I want to be tone, I hate my legs and I was worried about my arms but they are looking really good. I am sure this will level off after a while, I think my eyes and brain are having a problem adjusting to the new me, I think I have trouble seeing my self as small as I really am. I think I have the body size corrected, I am thinking I need to fix my thought processes now. So you got company girl, still taking this new life one day at a time. By the way you look amazing.
  2. Congrats on your upcoming surgery date! 1. How long did your surgery last on average? under 2 hours - Oh I was an outpatient too, so I went home that day and got to sleep in my own bed - YEAH 2. How long did it take you to wake up from the anesthesia? I was awake within one hour of coming out, but not ready to go home since I had a lot of nausea. 3. I know everyone is different but on a scale of 1-10 how much pain did you feel once you woke up? Um, is 10 high pain and 1 no pain? I felt no pain - none. But I have a lot of buddies in SoCal group who felt a lot of pain. Don't think of me as wonderwoman, I avoid pain at all costs. 4. How soon do they have you start walking around once you wake up? As soon as you can - within an hour after waking up. I was not attached to any pain meds or pain pumps or catheder or drain or heart monitor or etc. They wanted me moving right away. I was just another normal girl, minus most of my stomach. The nausea was bad though. 5. If there are any ladies out there who had PCOS, did it go away or improve with time after surgery? n/a i have so many more, if you have any other info other than what i asked...its welcome! Ask away - that is what we are here for to share and cheerlead each other onto success. Remember we are all different, with different surgeons using different methods & tools. Hugs!
  3. Hi Everyone: For me this journey started when I went to the doctor in February 2017 about fixing my hiatal hernia. I have lived with the Heidel hernia for more than 10 years but lately it was giving me problems and impacted my quality-of-life. The surgeon I went to (who would eventually do my gastric bypass) let me know that he could fix the Heidel hernia but that unless I lost a significant amount of weight it would return. So here I am 6 days out from surgery and healing well. Greatest Challenges: Finding a good sleeping position that lasts for hours. Gas pain in shoulders. Greatest Accomplishments: No vomiting, able to do 4oz of Protein shake, teas, water, popsicles. Consistently staying hydrated and I love the taste of my vitamins. [emoji23] I hope to continue to share my journey with you all. I am thankful for this new lease on life and plan to take full advantage of it. Eating at a bar... a new experience.

I am really hoping the ulcer will be cleared by my next appointment, January 7th. I'll give it another month from there before I test my luck on even mild stuff. I am getting a little tired of being on bland, unseasoned puree. My life is greek yogurt, broths, and cottage cheese. But... if I can conquer 10 weeks of puree, I can do anything. hahaha.

  6. If you haven't talked to your surgeon's office in a while, it might be a good idea to give them a call to let them know you're almost done with your 6-month weight loss and ask what you need to do to schedule the endo and psych eval. A lot of bariatric practices have a "patient navigator" who helps to coordinate that stuff. I had some concerns about my insurance coverage (mainly because I hadn't been to a doctor in almost 10 years, so I didn't have a documented weight history), but the surgeon was very familiar with my insurance requirements and said, "Don't worry, we'll get you covered," and they did! They do this for a living, so most of them are pretty good at dealing with insurance companies.

    Chicago...... suggestions

if you're into architecture, Chicago is world famous for early 20th century architecture. The Chicago Architectural Foundation has TONS of walking, bus, and boat tours. We've been on several - they've all been excellent. Art Institute is great if you're into art; Field Museum is great if you're into natural history. We also do a lot of just walking around when we're in Chicago (I live two hours from there, so we do weekends there several times a year). the Drake is pretty far north in the Loop - north of Loyola. The area around the Loyola campus is nice. But go beyond that and walk down Michigan Ave - so much there. we've been to so many restaurants, but I can't think of any one particular one to recommend - you'll stumble upon tons just walking around. We usually try to hit ethnic places, usually. Scoot over to some of the other streets that parallel Michigan Ave - there are lots of restaurants over there as well. You could always pick some cuisine and do a search on that. We've been to Colombian places, Argentine places, Turkish places, Middle Eastern places, Cajun places, pizza places, delis, so many.....they really have everything there. P.S. there's a Nutella Cafe on Michigan Ave. Might want to avoid that one! (it's great but...Nutella - you'll gain 10 lbs just walking in the door!)
  8. Hi, Can you elaborate a little on a few of your points? You said sometimes the sleeve is not the best surgery for someone with metabolism issues and that a different surgery may be more appropriate... why and which one? I have been very concerned about this issue. I lost 160lbs 10 years ago on low carb ( I was still overweight -- size 14/16) and managed to keep the majority of it off. I've gained about 60-70 pounds over the last 5 years even though I still adhered to a low carb diet ( just maybe not as strict). Ok, so I'm thinking that maybe my body is immune to the low carb at this point so I tried Weight Watchers.... I GAINED WEIGHT ON WW. That is how I ended up here. I felt surgery was my only hope.... Let me add that I had Thyroid Cancer and my thyroid was removed, but I take Synthroid so that should not be the issue. I also have Multiple Sclerosis but cannot think of any reason MS would affect weight loss. You also said that if you only had 1 protein shake in the morning and 1 protein bar at lunch you would faint... But isn't that close to what we're supposed to be doing. Lets say a protein shake has 200 calories, so far so good right? A protein bar has 200 calories. So we're at 400 calories before dinner. My impression was that staying around 600-800 calories is optimal to keep losing? Help! Now I'm concerned that I will be failure at this!!

    I'm Scared But Excited

Sleeved 10 days ago. Woke up in Recovery with terrible nausea, but I haven't had it since. Throat was sore for about 3 - 4 days, and I'm able to sleep on my side now, but I had my gall bladder out, too, which causes more pain. I feel great, I have no buyer's remorse, and the surgeon already has me on mushies. You'll do well.
  10. Great timing for me to have an infected tooth! Last week I lost about 3 pounds on the preop...then over the weekend when my tooth got infected and I couldn't eat anything cause the action of opening my mouth sent me into MAJOR pain..I dropped 10 lbs. Pretty dang AWESOME! Then I had my tooth extracted on Monday and the oral surgeon told me to eat soups, yogurt and generally follow a liquid diet...I started laughing and said...no problem...I have been for the last week anyways...I then told him that I was having WLS next week and he smiled and said good for you! The infected tooth is helping me stick to my diet...not the best NSV ever...but it's pretty awesome...
  11. Has anyone else experienced this? I have a palpable thumb sized achy & tender-to-touch lump at the sternum. It extends from my xyphoid process upward, more tender to the left. Of course I got my mind in a tizzy, as I have a history of Endometrial cancer (GET THOSE PAP TESTS, GIRLS!!). In doing online research, I found this can be common with weight loss because there is less *cushion* there, or caused by any number of MUCH less scary things!! I've called the surgeon's office, NP said the same, but advised I see my PCP and err on the side of caution.10:45 appt tom'w with PCP. Off to planet fitness now to work off my ever present anxiety before it blossoms to mild hysteria. Anyone? Thank you in advance! Marianne
  12. Often these issues are related to vitamin malabsorption after RNY. My father is 10 years out on his bypass and still suffers these low blood pressure episodes caused by a mix of changing Vitamin D & Iron Deficiencies. I don't know what your labs tested for or whether they were fasting tests or not, but that's usually the place to start (assuming you can rule out dehydration, which would be the most common cause). All that said see what the cardiologist says and don't try to self salt-medicate.

    SAHMs...

I'm surprised you didn't get any responses to this. I'm not a SAHM and my youngest is 10 so I can't answer you, but maybe if I bump the thread up someone else will notice it and have a good answer.

    Not to easy

You have my sympathy. Sending hugs! It is a pain, I agree. It does get better with practice. Not to discourage you from following your doctor's orders, but some studies shows that drinking before eating isn't so bad, not like drinking with or right after eating, which have very specific concerns for sleevers. Again, I don't want to encourage not following your plan, but i drink up to about 5 or 10 minutes before a meal . You might ask your doctor if this is something you could try. Just being able to walk around with a glass of Water with lemon in it would help at those cocktail parties.

    Surgery in 12 Days

Here, here! My thoughts exactly. I have a friend who went on one of the liquid diets for 6 weeks. Was thin but wanted to be thinner. She couldn't understand why I didn't just do what she did. Well 6 weeks would get rid of 10% of my problem. I'd have to be on them for a year and who can really face that!

7 Days Post Op And I Am Down......

Congrats on your wl. I was sleeved 9/19 and I too have people making comments such as that. I was not believing until a friend of mine that is almost two years postop said its true they do see a difference I just don't. She suggested I do a photo diary. Take a me pic every week. Yes it is normal to not being able to get in all they say you should. Just from my own experience get you 64ox of fluid and as much protein as you can. Good luck and much continued success.

    Fat Girl Moments....#FatGirlMoments

These are the moments where I realize how fat I once was, am and no matter how much weight I lose, will be.. It's because it's not on the outside it's on the inside. It's a mental thing. I sit here writing this... 80lbs....wait make that 83lbs from goal. As someone who can lose 10+lbs in a week.. I really have no excuse to not hit my goal by my birthday in Oct. Even if losing at a slower rate. This week, I hit the lowest number I'd been since I've been on this journey and it felt so good.....I then proceeded to make these "victory meals", cause that's what you do when you have something to celebrate right?!?!? #FatGIrlMoment - There was Ribeye Steak, Pork Sirloin Steak, "Light" Jello Salads ok....not so bad, but then we got to the mashed potatoes.. It's a celebration let's load them up... Garlic mashed potatoes, with triple cheddar cheese, with a touch of cream cheese and butter oh and bacon, and finally green onion for color.... These potatoes were and have been a meal in themselves for me in the past. They're so good they come straight out of my "Get Your Man" recipes/book I'm working on. But that's besides the point, the point to this is.. through the celebratory eating over the last 3 days I have gained 3lbs... Last night having seen the scale move up 2lbs I decided "It's ok I'm gonna work out hard and lose it again" and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want donuts. So off to walmart I go, in the middle of the night for donuts, they didn't have the kind I wanted.. so I settled for my 2nd favorite again justifying it in my head, it's ok... I haven't had them in Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long, I think I may have actually caught myself talking to them about how I'd missed them at one point. #FatGirlMoment But here's the kicker.. today when I got on the scale, I actually got on the scale with a donut in my hand and was eating it as I looked down at the scale, half expecting it to move down. No shock and awe here....it was up, I'd offically gained 3lbs in just over 3 days.... Things like this is exactly why it's SO important for us to get the mental aspect about losing weight. Why it's SO important to understand our relationship with food and how it effects us, not only our bodies but our emotions as well. I look forward to my #FatGirlMoments both good and bad as they're always a learning experience for me. And this time I learned a big one.... Everything we pick up is a choice, everything we eat can either move us closer to our goal or further from our goal and that's how we have to look at it. One day at a time, one meal at a time, one bite at a time. It's not easy... but I'm in faith I can and WILL do this!.
  19. Mine is going to be Nov 18! I have been trying to eat slower as well, constrict portion size, sip water every 5-10 minutes. Trust me these are all not easy to do but it'll help to get into the routine for after surgery. I start my liquid diet Nov 1 so that'll help with getting in the zone right before surgery

    Approved ---I think

I was told I was approved by UHC on 10-19-07 I had my surgery on 11-12-07 This morning I get a letter telling me it is not covered, go figure that one out, so I have been on phone all morning trying to get this figured out, I wouldn't have had the surgery if my insurance couldn't help me pay for it. Frustrated to say the least.:cry

    Protein Help

I was banded two weeks ago. I was on clear liquids for the first week and then was told I could add liquid yougurt and protein drinks. I was told I should use Glucerna since I am diabetic. Used it during my pre op diet and surprisingly, tastes good. The nutritionist told me I need to drink 30g of protein a day. Glucerna only has 10 g. I am only getting about maybe 14-15grams / day. I tried the protein powder drinks and they were nasty. Couldn't stomach them. Why do you have to have 30g of protein and what happens if you don't get it?

    Post-Op checkup

I just got back from my checkup too - and also lost 10 lbs since surgery (December 3). Wahoo! He said he likes his patients to loose 15 lbs in the first month . . . so I'm in OK shape (well not physically lol). I have an appointment for January 2 for my first fill. He said he is pretty agressive . . . and we will see what happens then. He said I can do anything as long as I still feel good . . . don't overdue it. And I knew my incisions were glued shut . . .but he said "yup . . .it's a high grade super glue that is bendable and flexible" . . . amazing! Chris

    Post-Op checkup

How were most of you closed up?? Glue, stiches or staples. I am going to have staples (12-19-07) which I have never had. I have had 2 c-sections with dissolving stiches. How is it to have staples removed?

5 days post op. Is this full?

I have not had one instance of food getting stuck since I have had my sleeve, and hope you have the same. I didn't start experiencing any hunger until a week post-op. At that point it was not uncontrollable nor has it been since surgery. I am 10 weeks out.

    Smoothie size

My smoothies are typically 8-12oz of milk, protein powder, and maybe some form of fruit, maybe some Cacao (the no sugar stuff with only 10-15 calories) and ice. Blender foams it to between 16-32 oz. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
