  1. You can't go the low carb route and exercise with any decent level of intensity or duration. I know there is this thought that in order to lose weight, you have to do low carb. That may have been true pre-sleeve, but for me, it never holds water. You need energy to exercise. Carbs provide that. With that energy, you can work out stronger, longer and really burn the fat. It worked for me and many others who have discovered that dieting with a sleeve with exercise just doesn't work.

    Period problems

My first one was SOOOO bad it was heavy and I thought I was dying. Then I skipped two months and this month I got it super early and really really heavy. I talked to my gyn and she said when you have rapid weight loss that it can through off your hormones and reak havoc with your cycle. I got the depo shot and said I'll deal with my cycle when I'm done with my main weight loss. Good luck to you
  3. Girls- what kind of problems did you have with your period after surgery? I've had a couple early and now for two weeks long. I've heard abnormalities are normal for weight loss, but need some reassurance.

    Pre-Surgery Benders

I didn’t get a chance to. I went to see my surgeon 4/30 to get a date and I I had the option to book my surgery literally 14 days later and I did it. I went out for dinner that night (yesterday) and that’s it. Here I am day one of my liquid diet and all I can think about is all the food I could of had if I waiting til like May 20ish but i don’t regret it. I want this done and over and don’t forget that every pound you put on is weight that you have to lose and keeps you further from your goal. Yo-Yo Girl from New York City

    Why am I so tired?

I'll be 9 weeks out this week. It took me until 6 weeks out before I had energy back, which was when my doctor released me to lift weights. What we forget is what a major surgery we had. The first 2 weeks I could barely muster the energy to walk up my stairs. The good news is you will start feeling better soon. You really just have to listen to your body, and let yourself heal. Good luck!!!

    Slipped Band Waiting Game..

I feel your pain. I've had my band almost 3 yrs now, lost over 100 lbs (was within 11 lbs of goal) and my band slipped about 7 mths ago. I didn't do anything about it cuz I was afraid he'd want to take it out. The only symptom I had was severe reflux. I could still eat and drink like usual. After 4 mths of nightime hell, my husband talked me into going to the dr. After an xray, they found a slip. So the PA took out 1/2 of my 9cc fill and let me rest for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks of sleeping like a baby (and gaining a few lbs) I went in and had 1cc fill (without a follow up xray to make sure it was in place). I don't know why I didn't insist on it. Well, the 1cc still let me sleep like a baby but I also had no restriciton. So 2 weeks later, he put another 1cc in. Restriction is back - so is the reflux. So I figure either it slipped AGAIN or it was never corrected in the first place. Now I have to start all over again (and my dr is also 3 hrs away - and $160 each visit) and see him numerous times to get this fixed. The nurse said that my next visit would be free (my husband insisted on that since they never did a follow up xray). I'm so scared that they're either going to unfill me completely and I'll gain even more than the 14 lbs I've already gained, or I have to have surgery to reposition it. In one way, I'd rather do the latter. At least I'd KNOW that it was corrected and my insurance would pay for it! So I know exactly how your feeling. Nervous that my band will never be the same again. Wish the plication surgery had been in available in 2009. Then I wouldn't have to worry about slips again. Good luck to you! Marci
  7. I have a surgery date of December 10th and I am very excited! I started the medifast diet early because my insurance requires a bmi of less than 50 and I am slightly above that. So inorder to qualify I started medifast on September 16th. I have been on the diet for two weeks now and have lost 15 pounds! I am happy about the weight loss but I am afraid I will not be able to stick to the medifast for three whole months. Right now I am on four shakes a day with one meal. Soon I will be on five shakes a day with no meal! I pray I have the willpower to stay on the medifast. If I don't, I wont lose enough weight to have my insurance pay for the surgery. I need words of advise on how to make it through. Did anyone else get frustrated on the medifast diet?

    sleeve doesn't mind sugar- oy!

Yep - sugar has been a huge part of my weight/food problem, and I hoped that I'd be one of those who got sick from sugar, but initial evidence suggests that that is not the case. I've barely had any sugar though since surgery - just a few small tastes. What has made me happy though is that I've been able to have a tiny taste without feeling an overwhelming urge to eat more. And I don't physically crave sugar like I used to at all. It's just a head thing and while will power was not something that helped me pre-surgery, it does work now. I feel more like a normal person now - everyone has moments of wanting a sweet, and those who manage their weight more often choose not to. That's how I feel now - like I'm choosing not to eat sweets - but that choice is actually doable now, whereas before surgery the need was too overwhelming and I couldn't so easily choose to make the right decision. Hope you can find some otherways to calm your nerves so you can avoid getting back into a sugar habit.

    Looking for Stories

So happy for you: Great job! I just got sleeved on February 2nd. So I'm still in early early stages of all of this. Today I'm having a really bad day feeling very discouraged. It's not that I'm not losing weight because I am. Of course I'm happy about that but Its very hard for me to keep down liquids or at least get them down. So that makes me very tired and weak. I have a 14 year old a football player and he is always hungry so I'm always having to make sure he has something to eat. That makes it very difficult to be in good spirits cuz I am so hungry. I know I'm going to get through this and I'm going to get through this; and down to my desired weight. I have already lost over 15 lbs.. It will be two weeks on Thursday... I am just so hungry and weak... Any advance on getting in more fluids.. Since i can't stomach the shakes?! Sent from my LG-H820 using the BariatricPal App
  10. So, I'm 2+ years out and had what I suspect was a gallbladder episode a few nights ago. Woke up projectile vomiting 5 hours after a rich meal. (Rich in good fat, salmon, olive oil, etc) I palpated around and nothing hurt to the touch. Problem was over as quick as it started. Went back to bed felt okay the next day, (minor soreness probably to be expected). Went and got checked the next day at the PCP's office, (my surgeon moved and the bariatric program kind of fell apart so no support there) and the nurse practitioner was like, yeah, could be, but since it was the first episode probably don't need an ultrasound. Try cutting some fat out of your diet. Okay... So I've done that, and do feel better, however, I've lost a little weight already. I don't really NEED to lose at this point, but 10 pounds would be okay. No more though. So I've been maintaining my weight on a certain calorie level (1300-1500) mostly supported by full fat dairy and "good" fats in nuts, avocado, salmon, olive oil, etc. I've gone back to logging so I can keep track of the fat, (I WAS eating a lot, I think), but now, keeping it below 30% (around 40g per day which doesn't seem that low to me), I struggle to get 1000 calories per day, (even when I eat 5-6 small meals per day). I have an exercise habit, stationary bike at home, nothing extreme, that burns 400-500 per day. What am I going to look like in 2 months? Should I be concerned?

    Overeating at Christmas

I'm a bander nine months out and I had a 3-5 pound gain over Christmas. I haven't lost weight in two months. I felt like you do but talked it out with a few people, and the last three days have been good and the weight has come back off. Don't despair. We are human. The beauty of the band is that it makes it easier to get back on track. Focus on solid protein and no starchy foods and no drinking calories. You'll find that if you just focus on one day at a time you can get back to good habits. Good luck!
  12. All of the above is true, however, I have heard from others that BCBS of Texas seems to be quite a bit tougher on their approvals. Many have to go under a one year Dr monitored weight loss effort before they will approve. In general, UHC seems to be less stringent. Good luck!

    Texan 2 B Banded!

I hope I will be banded in Houston, Texas by Dr. Hadar Spivak! My predetermination letter has just been sent to my ins. co and the ins. lady said it's sitting in front of her right this minute! I wonder if she likes candy? I have fought the weight battle hard all my life! Some times I've even won... But most times I lose, I think the life time battle is finally taking me from me! I am so tired of the loneliness I always feel, even in a room full of people! I can't wait to be on the other side! You all have so much information and such inspiring stories! I look forward to sharing my own success stories! Thanks for all the wisdom words! Ally

    I am pregnant!!!!

If you've been doing low carb, start eating carbs. I'm not saying load up on white carbs, but don't avoid carbs anymore. I'm supposed to eat 100 gr of carbs per day without fail, and I'm supposed to aim for 100gr of Protein, but usually hit 80gr. You can not be in ketosis while pregnant, as it causes fetal brain damage. Also, you'll need to make sure you get on a good quality Vitamin, including folic acid, sublingual b12, and Vitamin D. I'm able to continue my Celebrate multi vitamin with Iron because it's actually better formulated than most pre-natals. I'm 13.5 weeks pregnant, however I am much further out than you, and can probably eat more than you can considering I'm 23 months post-op so I have zero issues eating enough food to support me and a developing baby. Depending on your pre-pregnancy weight, you'll need to shoot for 1400-1800 calories a day. For me at 131lbs at 7 weeks pregnant, they advised that I needed a minimum of 1700 calories a day and 100oz of Water. juice, milk, and all other fluids are just extra on top of that 100oz of water. The baby will take from you what it needs. It is your body that can suffer through the pregnancy. Make sure you have your dentist monitor your teeth as they can weaken. As for weight gain, I'm 13.5 weeks out, and I've gained about 7lbs of the 30-35lbs they want me to gain. Most babies born to WLS mothers are born normal weight. My ob and even my high risk ob haven't dealt with a VSG pregnancy so they couldn't comment on my "gain", but they did say "You shouldn't have any problem because all of our banded mommies gain a bunch of weight". I just kind of laughed. I've seen some RNY patients gain 50-70lbs in a pregnancy, but they had other issues with food. I am having trouble with some foods including dense protein, and my lactose intolerance is back in full effect. Not to mention night time reflux has hit me a few times in the last few weeks, and that is a total b!tch. There is a pregnancy after WLS forum on obesityhelp.com but I can't stand posting over there. It just doesn't work for me, I've tried a few times, but it just irritates the hell out of me. VSG does NOT throw me into being high risk, but it very well could with you being so early out of surgery. I have other medical conditions that are contributing to me being high risk. Best wishes ! ! !
  15. That is kind of my point though. People just talk about complication, weight loss, and healthy life style changes. No one ever really talks about emotional or identity issues that don't involve breaking up your marriage, or transfer addictions. It is all the same old thing you can just read about.

    From the album: My Journey

I did a weight loss challenge in the summer of 2012 and this was my results.
  17. So HI! My name is Emily . Im 23. I was just banded on july 16th.No problems during surgery. My stay was excellent. I didnt get up and walk much the night at the hospital. I didnt sleep the night before surgery( nerves) so when i had to be tehre at 530am i was exhausted and after the recovery room and being placed in my room i slept a lot! Prolly every 20 minutes hahah on and off. I had some slight gas pain in my tummy. Other than that i was peachy. So far (and its only been 7 days) nothing to complain about except i wanna CHEW something haha. Im not hungry I just want to have some kind of consistancy in my mouth. Im still on Clear Liquids. I am on that until I go for my post op visit on Monday with my doctor. Most go to what my doc calls "full liquid" after 7 days but apparently according to his rules i wait until i go see him. I havent weighed myself yet. Last time i saw my weight it was at the hospital before i put on my gown. Im very excited to meet people and to have some one to talk to who understands what im going through. My parent sympathize but dont get it when they sit down in front of me while i sip my broth and they are eatting big macs lol. RUDE  If you wanna know more about me just ask. Im more than willing to share. loveeeee
  18. That's so annoying!! Ive been seeing a counsellor for the last 2 years for depression and when I went to a private clinic i told them and they had to write to my counsellor and my counsellor PERSONALLY doesn't agree with any kind of gastric operations which and she won't write back to my surgeon and he won't preform surgery until she does luckily I had a sneaky idea to go with another clinic a told them I don't see a counsellor. I know it's wrong but what can I do? The only reason I see a counsellor is because of my weight issues anyway! hope you get sorted out. Best of luck.
  19. I found out today that my family care doctor didn't keep record of our discussions about weight loss diet and exercise... On the bright side the man who needs the information to submit to my insurance said she can go back and document what we discussed on a form... Which is great... However... My family doctor has up and quit... No one knows where she is going or if she is even going to work anywhere else... So that means I may have to do 5 more months... I am sooo discouraged!

Hi Shortgal & Sharona, Thanks for your words of support. Shortgal, your weightloss is great! Anything "lost" is always a plus. It's the up and down that I couldn't take anymore. I had did Jenny Craig for about 2 months, but besides being expensive to stay on, when I stopped I gained all the weight back, and plus some!! That's when I started thinking that the smaller portions do work, I lost 15 lbs, but when I stopped, like I said it all came back as usual. That's what really got me thinking about the band. Two of my friends had done gastric bypass about 8 years ago. One did and is still doing great! She follows exactly how she is to eat and drink and watches her portions. The other has stretched her pouch to where she is eating as much, if not more, than when she began. Watching both of them, I feel that I am ready to take on this new lifestyle. I think I'll be more careful about my choices and I do realize this only a TOOL to help me lose the weight. It is not a guarantee. I have about 100 lbs. to lose. You both are doing so well, and are a great inspiration to me to know that it actually can be done!

    Just finally banded

I was banded 11/25 and know exactky how you're feeling. We are definitely November Bandsters and on our way to achieving successful and lasting weight loss. Wow! Just typing that was a bit surreal. I'll say good luck even though it sounds like you're in control and don't really need it. Enjoy your liquids! I know I am. LOL!

    Returning to work

I am a labor and deliver nurse and I took 8 weeks off. I felt ok at 6 weeks but my energy level kept going up and down. With another 2 weeks I was ready to get back to work. I work 12 hour shifts and overnight. Everyone is different. As a wound nurse you may only need a week or two. I had pain the first two so I was on heavy pain meds. Hang in there I was sleeved on May 1 and have lost 126lbs and reached my goal weight last week. Went to Vegas and had a great time to celebrate !
  23. My name is Jennifer. I live in the Dallas Fort worth area... 8 years ago I was trying to get WLS in the middle of all the testing for the insurance I lost my insurance and had to give up.... Im back at it again! Pay cash out of pocket! I very excited, but I have been let down before. On September 30th I hope to be banded. I am getting a tax return back that I didn't file for (2009) and I am using it as a down payment. I have everything done such as blood tests breathing tests EKG everything done. Just waiting for the money part. I learn from the last let down 8 years ago to not be TOO excited.... so cross your fingers for me please! I am 27 years old. I weight 301 with a bmi of 51.4... i wear a size 26/28 jean and 3x-4x top

    Update-I Wonder...

Hi, Rahnava... I too was sleeved by Dr. Garcia..Surgery day was April 27.. So far I've lost 55.3 lbs post op, but I lost 16 lbs pre op..for a total of 71 lbs. I completely understand about the 5-6 lb weight gain during TOM. I'm currently going through it right now and its' so frustrating, but even if we're smaller and at our goals this would still happen..I see it as one of the woe's of being a woman.. You'll break out of the 60's I'm sure of it.. I was stuck for about 3 wks at 300 lbs and within 2 days... i literally dropped 4.5 lbs. I upped my workouts and spent more time outside sweating and I believe that helped a lot... I agree with Lauranbob... 60lbs in 6months is awesome! Sure we'd like for it to be more, but I've found that we all lose differently.. I've read on here where some have lost 100 lbs by month 4 but that clearly isn't in the cards for me.. As long as we're losing that's what's important, right? My goal is to lose 9-10 lbs a month. Anything extra is just icing on the cake... Sometimes I've exceeded that and other times like this month I have not.. I've only lost 7.8 lbs for July, but it's 7.8 lbs less on me than before. I have about 100 lbs to loose myself. So I figured 9-10 lbs in a month in a 10 month period is feasible. I don't think I'm reaching for the stars with that amount... We can do this!! Set backs..stall's or whatever you call them are bound to happen.. But as long as we're following the plan we can't lose... Stay encouraged, okay?
