  1. Hi! I'm brand new to the forum. I was sleeved on aug. 7th, and overall I've been doing well. I'm down almost 30lbs. Here's my question: I know I'm not supposed to have any alcohol. But I'm going on a bachelorette tomorrow. How much would one drink hurt? I'm not driving anywhere, and will be having dinner first. I'm sure I'm better off not risking it, but it's going to be hard to be on a party bus full of free liquor!
  2. I am 4 months post op and 3 days before my surgery, my wife of 12 years decided that it was time for a separation. Great timing. Anyways that was 4 months ago and now I'm on the dating scene. I've been on a few dates and most of the dates revolve around going out to restaurants or bars. The food isn't an issue but the drinking part is what I'm curious about. Will having a few drinks on the weekends impede my ability to lose the maximum amount of weight during my rapid weight loss phase? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. I've been drinking a lot lately and haven't had any issues. I realize it's wasted calories but I don't mind losing slower at the moment. I'd wait a month or so after surgery before trying alcohol, I'm not sure why everyone waits longer apart from the empty calories issue. Just make sure you drink plenty of Water and I would recommend trying to drink BEFORE you eat instead of after. I've been big on redbull+vokda lately. I have to go a little slow on these since there is some carbonation. Wine, mudslides, margaritas, straight whiskey, and I've even had a couple beers although I have to drinks these REALLY slowly and pour them into a glass so they defizz faster.
  4. Drhodes, Do you live near a military installation? If so, you could contact the Drug and Alcohol Program. I believe they would be more than willing to write up a statement for Tricare to indicate you are not an abuser. They may want to do a brief assessment, but having worked with these folks for many years they might enjoy helping you. It's just a thought. Take care

    Alcohol during maintenance??

Honestly I think alcohol was the downfall of my maintenance phase. My body metabolize it faster and a drink or two when you get it. This led to me wanting to drink more and over the years I definitely added weight to my body because my eating habits haven’t changed much

Not losing weight - very frusterated

All or nothing attitude? Look, I'm completely sorry if you think I came across as rude or insensitive. And this will not be the first time someone has accused someone else of being rude because they don't like the things the read. So I apologize if I hurt your feelings. But perhaps you need to hear something like that for you to get on the right path. Before my surgery I was told (by my surgeon) that some people, for whatever reason, don't lose weight after getting the band. I asked "because they aren't eating correctly or exercising?" And she said "no. Just because. We dont know why they can't lose weight." Whoa. Obviously I went through with the surgery. I'm four months out. I was told very clearly...no alcohol for six months. Have you ever bothered to look at the nutritional value of wine? Look, all I'm saying is...now more than ever in your whole entire life, it is imperative that you eat healthy. I'm not saying "don't have a small piece of birthday cake when your (enter friend/relative here) has a party". What I'm saying is...not even two months out and you're "cheating?" You still need to train yourself. That's all I'm saying. I haven't had it easy either. But I was given a pretty good guideline/diet book before my surgery. And I've prety much stuck with it. I spent 33 years eating whatever the hell I wanted, and you're right...I didn't get this very expensive surgery to mess it all up. So I really do apologize if you think I'm rude. I'm really sorry. But join a support group. talk to your surgeon, or better yet, your nutritionist. Go over your food diary (are you keeping one of those?) And hopefully they can help steer you in the right direction. I'm just guessing (and I'm no professional) that if you aren't losing weight, the nutritionist isn't going to OK the sweets and wine. That's all I'm saying! Saline in your band isn't going to fix what's going in your mouth.
  7. I'm pre-op and curious about the rules for drinking alcohol after a VSG. Right now, I really enjoy a glass of wine with or after dinner, not every night but maybe a couple of times a week. Will I still be able to do that after surgery? What about other kinds of alcohol -- a gin & tonic or whatever? So what about it, sleevers? Do you drink? If so, what? And when?

    Alcohol After The Sleeve

I guess this doesn't NEED to be in the Men Room, but here it goes... My doc told me no alcohol until 6 months after surgery. Then I told him i am taking the bar exam in February (3 months after surgery)... He said "Go ahead and drink after the bar! also, feel free to have that cigar you keep bugging me about." Now when he says I can have alcohol... Does he mean just wine? Or, will I be able to have some scotch with that cigar? What is the reasoning behind the alcohol statement? Is it too harsh on the wound area? Does it cause too much acid production? Too many empty calories?

    Alcohol After The Sleeve

I'm about 3 1/2 months out and have just recently begun mixing back in a little alcohol. Went to a football game last week and tailgated, probably had 4 drinks. Like Wishes said, there's definitely a different feeling, so be careful how much and how fast you drink.

    Alcohol After The Sleeve

I nearly drunk a whole entire bottle of champagne on New Year's. Whoops.... and I have had quite a scotch whiskey's and bourbon's throughout the holiday season. You will probably be fine. I would ask your surgeon directly what he means with alcohol consumption if you are worried. However, it hits me like a fire truck and leaves me in two seconds flat. Just be aware, alcohol doesn't sit the same as it used to.
  11. I am 5 weeks out and have 3 to go before I am supposed to have carbs like chips or food that is not soft. I eat a few chips a day 4-5, because I like the crunch and salt. I eat a few cashews a day, not for the Protein but because they taste good. I also drink while eating and it really does limit what I can eat. The rule I want to break is having alcohol. I am not a big drinker and can go without any for months. The problem is I have a guys weekend coming up next week and for the last 10 years it has been drinking , cards, gambling, movies etc. I do all the cooking so my food will not be an issue but I do want to get a buzz on. I am 5 weeks out and Dr says no alcohol for 6 months. I think that is a weight loss thing not a recovery thing, but still I want to follow the rules.

    May 24 Surgery Day

I'm not much of a drinker of any kind of alcohol. When I did drink, it was only to get a buzz. Did you get a buzz? I hear we get buzzed really fast.

    Alcohol consumption

Oh wow this is one of those things on which different programmes are so very different! I was cleared to have a glass or two of wine 7 weeks post op (xmas though so that might have accelerated my request). And I have had *some* alcohol on one or two days pretty much every week since then. Honestly I don't think it has held me back at all. I know this might be very different for others though. Can't see that one or two drinks on a holiday will impede your progress. Hope you have a lovely holiday OP!
  14. Hi everyone! When did everyone have their first sip post surgery? I’m 7 months out now & on vacation. I want to have one cocktail but I’m kind of nervous since I have drank in forever and I don’t eat much.
  15. Hi, I'm Deb from Minnesota. I am so happy to have found this site. I know several people who have had the gastric bypass surgery but its too scary for me. When I heard about the lap band I knew that sounded much more safer to me. I have so many questions! First of all, does it seem like the weight loss is slower than you expected it to be? Are you able to drink any alcohol at all? I enjoy a cocktail or two on Friday evenings, sort of my reward for making it through the week. But I could live without it if I had to. Maybe others of you have felt like this, maybe not, but I dont want to tell everyone or really anyone for that matter that I'm going to have the surgery. :kiss Is that weird or what? :nervous Looking forward to connecting with you all and getting support and giving what I can too.

    Adipex After VSG? Tips Please.....

So, without any diatribes, why have surgery if you're just going to ignore the guidelines, drink empty calories, and then pump your body full of appetite suppressants? Why not just use the surgery as the tool it was meant to be, lay off the booze, suck it up, and lose weight without drugs. It's great you haven't gained weight, but Adipex isn't going to kill off the empty calories/sugar/carbs you're consuming with the alcohol intake. All it's going to do is hype you up, increase your heartrate, and maybe keep you from eating nutrient dense food all while stressing your liver on top of the booze. Mexico must be fabulous, but the after effects of what you are choosing to do to your body might not be worth it down the road.

The only harm alcohol causes us is empty calorie weight gain. Most likely people get drunk more quickly due to the fact you have abstained from alcohol for a good bit of time. Your tolerance is different. I used to enjoy a couple glasses of wine every night, but 2 now is way different. I don't do it simple because I'm still trying to make goal and wine is way off my course. It's a mind set

    liquor

I was told no alcoholic beverages for at least a year by my doc. They emphasize the fact that your liver is like the housekeeper and needs to filter so much junk out of your blood as you lose, that asking it to metabolize alcohol on top of that could cause serious damage. I've also heard through some other groups that I belong to that people have gotten seriously ill and died just from a couple of drinks after WLS because of the way their new system works. Totally not worth the risk to me. I love a glass of wine (or a mojito, or margarita...) as much as the next person, but I'm not going to chance it for at least a year.

I was sleeved January 30th. No alcohol for me yet. Doc said I could have it 4 months out. I believe VSG patients are supposed to feel the effects because the stomach is so small that the alcohol does not stay in the stomach as long as when it was full sized so it kind of flushes through the stomach and gets absorbed right away.

If a doc was in the "ghetto".....

First I will address the hospital in the ghetto concern: Yes I would go if it was a good hospital. I do my research and would not go to a hospital that did not have a glowing reputation. Many of the best hospitals in the country are in so called "ghettos". Columbia Presbyterian Hospital aka New York Presbyterian Hos is in a ghetto but it hasn't stopped US Presidents, famous athletes, and some of the richest people in the world from going there. Secondly, it hasnt stopped the top Md students, Doctors, and researchers in the world from coming to the hospital. Oprah's favorite Dr, Dr. Oz is the head of Cardiology at the hospital. So in closing, I think that you should choose whatever hospital you want. However, do not equate the quality of the hospital with your assumption of the quality of the people who live around it. If you don't want to see poor people or people who don't fit into your view as acceptable, so be it and don't go. Now I will address the no so subtle subtext: Alcoholics are everywhere, the homeless do exist, and drugs addicts live in the suburbs too. You should realize that the people who live in economically depressed areas are just as offended by the living conditions as you are.Try not to be so judgmental, we are all human.
  21. Sorry, I can't tell you the effect it has on me because I'm too scared to try it, and here's why: I got this write-up from my dietician on liquid calories: "Alcohol is dangerous because it has more concentrated number of calories per serving than other carbohydrate. Carbohydrate has only 4kcals per gram. Alcohol is 7kcals per gram. Calorie content varies tremendously because of the other ingredients (sweeteners and such) and the concentration of alcohol." Not worth it to me. My "buzz" is from my successful weight loss!
  22. I know I will never drink carbonated drinks again! I hate diet drink so I would want regular Coke Or root beer! I would be happy with some of that "not your grandfather's root beer alcoholic beverage"! I took a sip of it and it is delicious. I was addicted to real Coke! I was told at my bariatric Center never to indulge in carbonated beverages again. But this did not hurt my feelings! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. I was sleeves on May 20th and I'm 25, you're not alone! ????I was sleeved in the 26th and I'm actually 21! The whole no-alcohol thing seems to be the hardest for me right now because all of my friends are having birthdays and the bar is where we all seem to hang out now! Awesome! I'm so glad to finally find some people on here around my age. Not that everyone here hasn't been super helpful, I just feel like it's such a different experience going through this when we're young. It's a fairly new procedure for weight - loss and we're going to be living with it for a long, long time! I agree the non-alcohol thing is difficult. I pretty much told my friends I'd be going into hibernation for a couple of months since most of our activities have revolved around alcohol. I'm going to make it work though and still find ways to go out and have fun until then. We should definitely all keep in touch since we were sleeved at the same time and will be going through all the stages together.

I rarely have the alcohol in the house. I started grabbing a few shot bottles at the gas station here and there. I also started drinking where alcohol was served wherever I went . I have not had anything to drink in 2 days now and am doing okay.

    The Maintenance Thread

Gosh one of the things this journey has taught me with regards to food and indulgences is that I DO have the power to choose and to change the game up. I do remember having those guilty feelings of failure and depression following a feast weekend. I would literally shove food down my gob every second I could! And food is using the term loosely. By food, I mean crap! LOL.Delicious. Carby. Fatty. Crunchy. Gooey. Pasta-y. Ricey. Crap. LOL. Hello, Tortillas y Tamales. Ola Enchiladas Chicas. LOL. Then the next week following it, I wouldn't even be able to make myself get on the scale, much less get back into an exercise and eating routine. Now following 2 days of eating heavy meals (not snacking on crap, just taking in double or triple my normal calories + limited alcohol), and up to 135 (pre-poopy LOL) and yesterday I sprang right back into the program. Got on the scale. Posted publicly to you guys about my plate and my weight and walked an hour both yesterday and today. This morning I'm down to 133lbs (post-poopy LOL) and I feel like it was only a temporary blip--not a backslide into the old ways. I will admit, I had anxiety and crankiness being at the top of my weight window. Kinda like the female cat in Pepe Le Peuw cartoons, trying to pry/crawl her way out of his smelly embrace. That was me trying to escape the reality of the scale yesterday morning--even knowing most of that was water weight. LOL. But this journey and my tool reassure me that regain will only happen with MY HELP. I have to aide and abet for it to happen (barring some medical catastrophe).
