  3. Hi everyone, I am 45yo, a married mom of 2, and I am currently on the preop diet with only 7lbs left to go. I've been what I called "over weight" for most of my life. My highest was 264 and now I'm at 227. I started thinking of WLS several years ago when I had a few friends go through it, but the time just wasn't right and decided to keep dieting and losing weight on my own. I'd had high hopes that each time I tried was going to be the last, but that didn't happen. I've learned a lot about "dieting" in my lifetime, so it was hard for me to admit that I just can't do it on my own. I figured I had all the tools I needed and that should be good enough. A few years ago I finished my last "diet" and just gave up. I couldn't force myself to do it anymore. I still kept some control, but mostly I was still overeating too-much-for-me portions and not exercising enough. The thought of WLS has never left my mind though, so this year I decided to look into it. I'm tired of being limited because of my size and I want to be healthy and active! It's amazing to me that with a lot of information and a new tool, I've really committed to change the way I eat (no more bad "diet" words) and live. The preop food plan is really working for me and I love it. I get hungry sometimes but I am working on thinking things through instead of just reacting (and eating). I'm learning to cope both mentally and physically and it is great. I know that the surgery will help me to continue losing weight and get to a point where I look and feel better, and am free from medical issues brought on by my obesity. So far I've had my orientation classes and first surgeon visit. Next will be a Psychologist appointment and nutrition class. My Dr. has given me the choice between RnY and Sleeve and I am 90% sure I'll go RnY. My husband is being so supportive of me, and my kids are really interested in my changed way of eating. I love that I can educate them while learning myself. Hopefully I can get all my preop work and appts done and have my surgery by January. Fingers crossed!

Congrats on your weight loss, that is great!!
  5. I had a lapband 7 years ago and only lost 38 # before having more and more problems with it. Eventually I went back and forth between bulemia/vomiting and hardly any restriction, then it leaked and became unfillable and I regained the weight. after various other trials I consulted with my surgeon dr upadyhay in oakland ca. we are going to remove the lapband and do the gastric sleeve in around a month, the date is not yet set. scared, fat, tired, gastric reflux, hoping this will have a better result.thanks. open to comments and suggestions. love sara
  6. Hello everyone My husband and I are in the very beginning process, and are working on this together. I am confused on steps that are upcoming and very concerned in the end I may not qualify. I was hoping to hear from some of you near the end of the process and maybe get some insight. So far we have found a surgical group we like and attended the required seminar. We have BCBS of Michigan and they require the 6 months of physician supervised weight loss attempt. I am on month 2 with my PCP but considering doing the long drive and finishing this with my surgical office. We are both right at about 40 BMI. He has co-morbidities and will be okay even at 35 BMI. I do not have any obvious co-morbidities, (looking for help on some off the wall things they consider co-morbidities) so I have to maintain the 40BMI. With the requirements for the insurance I am not sure how to go about the weight loss attempt. Some say that the insurance company only looks at the beginning BMI some say not to lose and stay at 40 BMI throughout. I am waiting for a packet from the insurance company that will possibly give me more insight. It sounds like the next appointment won't be for 3 months with the surgical group. I guess I am feeling a little lost on the process and I am worried I am going to mess up one little step and not be able to get the sleeve. Any advice, especially anyone dealing with BCBS of Michigan would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  7. I have not read this thread on this other site, but it is a clothing swap thread. CLOTHING EXCHANGE as we lose weight! - Band2gether.net Lap Band Support Forums Update: I looked at the last few posts on this and it looks old, sorry.
  8. Yesterday, an acquaintance of mine who I did not tell about my surgery, sent me a text claiming he had dreamed about me. When I asked him what he dreamed, he said that he dreamed he hadn't seen me for a while, and when he did I had lost an exorbitant amount of weight, and I was skinny. He said he was so shocked that he was a bit mad, and sorry he had not had the chance to "be with me" when I was fat! I thought, "Wow. This is really going to happen, and it is going to work." Finally, after a number of grueling months, I've gotten my surgery date! I want to cry. I'm happy and terrified, and filled with emotion. This process has brought so much to light already, and I feel like new soil, moist and tilled, awaiting the planting of the seeds of a healthy and happy, creative and expressive future. I just had to share. Thank you so much for reading. This forum has helped me every step of the way, from curious to I am. Gratitude.
  9. Hello everyone! I'm on the countdown. My surgery is scheduled for August 30th and I'm excited to get back to me. Your posts have been both informative and encouraging. Is there any place on the forum where people discuss the expected weight loss and does it depend on the starting weight?
  10. I get my first fill friday and i am nervous any one with tips on what to do after the fill and what not to do please comment. Also anybody that can give me an idea of what to expect friday that would be great too. I was banded on March 2nd and have lost 20lbs so far but no restriction and can eat any amount but i have been dieting since i been on regular foods the past week or so. Can anyone tell me did you even have any restriction or more weight loss after your first fill or should I not expect to have no more weight lost until my next fill or so forth? I am so nervous about being stuck at this same weight and i do walk but Monday i am starting a new gym and personal trainer so we shall see..Please give advise and comments on your first fill experiences Thanks!!!
  11. Hi, I'm new at this, have read many posts over the months, but this is my first post, so please be patient with me if I don't get it right. Since I was banded back in May 08, I had been in such a good head space. As as result, my weight loss has been fantastic, but I seem to be "loosing it". I had abstained from my trigger foods: takeaways, alcohol, potato chips etc. but they've since started creeping back, and my weight loss has slowed, though I'm still exercising. It's like they open up this insatiable abyss. The other thing is, my band is quite wide open for a bandit, but any more fill makes me so tight. My Doctor took out .02ml to loosen me up from being too tight, but I can eat ANYTHING and am not satisfied for long. I know most of this journey is more a head trip rather than hunger trip so how does one get back to that good headspace for further weightloss/maintenance?
  12. I guess this is an odd question, because I know every single one of us is different, but what is a reasonable expectation of weight loss every month? I see everything from 40 pounds in 6 months to 100 pounds in 6 months. That's such a huge gap. I just don't know how to know if I'm "on track". Has anyone here researched this or found a website that sorta answers this question?

    well, I just found out...

I stopped really trying to diet in that I don't want to stay hungry. If I am hungry, I eat. I have now moved from about 3 meals a day to about 5 on average although they are still small, but I am still making sure that I am eating the good healthy stuff and avoiding the unhealthy stuff 95% of the time (of course this does not include my first week back in the US after Halloween, I am blocking that whole week from my memory . . . it didn't happen, it didn't happen, lol). However, if I had a cheesecake in my house (perhaps pumpkin or lemon or maybe even a mocha swirl) . . . there is no telling how much I would eat of it over the course of a week . . . maybe the whole darn thing. I am trying, trying, trying not to bring that stuff in the house, lol. My intake is definitely up, but I am down to 141 as of this morning which is quite a shock. I began this pregnancy somewhere around 155. I can't understand how I can go from a really restrictive diet with tons of exercise to a loose diet with extra calories . . . and 5 days a week of exercise to maybe 2 1/2 days (since I decided to take naps instead on the other days, lol) and still continue to lose weight. I feel like I have just been lucky for now . . . my metabolism must be really cranking since there is no other explanation for it. I am just hoping it doesn't all catch up with me at once during the last trimester.

    Which is my starting weight?

I use my preop weight as well
  15. Heya folks. I've been on Depo provera for six months. I neglected to get my last shot because of some of my concerns (side effects and wanting to conceive eventually). Last shot was due on 2/15/11, which I skipped so I can get off it. My question - I've been banded since March 2010, and my weight loss basically slowed and then stopped in the time I've been on Depo. I've still lost a lot of weight, but most all of it was in the months before I got on depo. Back history - I was on depo a few years ago, gained a little weight, but then, I was already fat. When I stopped it, my periods came back after about 3-4 monnts. I'm hoping this time around is the same because I want to start trying to conceive in about 2 years from now, and I know depo is long acting and I want to clear it from my body long before I start TTC. My age is also a concern (26 now, I was 19-20 during my first depo experience). Can anyone share their experiences with depo, both with how it relates to being banded/weight loss and in general (especially concerning periods/ovulation and TTC)? Thanks

    Questions: Hip Pain and Cookbooks?

Hi! I just received 3 cookbooks I got off of Amazon.com: -The Bariatric Foodie Holiday Survival Guide -Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery -Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook For Dummies There were a lot of other options, as well. Just got them yesterday, so I have yet to read them, but I'm liking the last one so far! As far as my hips go, I've always had problems with them, so I don't know what to tell you. Let us know what you find out ok? Good luck to you!
  17. Good post! And you make a good point, I wish my obesity was that simple! Because I used to eat healthy and eat some junk too, I was never a total horrible food eater, I was not a burger and fries, fried foods, ice cream, fattening Cereal, chips loads of Pasta, mac and cheese, and junk type of obese person. I just ate too much combined with lack of exercise, and I was a stress eater too, I love healthy food, spinach, collards, cabbage, salads, baked chicken etc, I am also a good cook...I write computer code and I will tell ya...I could go through a whole bag of chocolate kisses if I had a difficult problem to solve....so the reason I was fat was a bit more complex...LOL and genetics play a role for me too...I can just look at food and gain 10 pounds... I've always wondered how some skinny women could sit all day and never enter a gym and stay skinny!!

    Good Apps?

Honestly I have a fitbit and it tracks my walking and food and weight. I splurged and bought the scale too which syncs with the fitbit I wear on my wrist. I love it but I still use myfitnesspal.
  19. Awesome!!!! I'm doing Liquids today since I have my final weigh in tomorrow at the surgeons office. If we gain weight they cancel the surgery. ????. Congrats on the loss and I am glad to hear that it is totally different from the band. Yay!

  21. I gained 7 pounds of muscle while losing a total of 113 pounds. I guess I was speaking more from my personal experiences. As a former amateur competitive power lifter I was used to eating 300g of protein a day or more on a 7000+ calorie diet. I couldn't possibly and never will be able to eat that much in a day now with 75% of my stomach missing.

Most of us go into a situation where we needed surgery by eating loads of carbs and not enough protein and nutritious foods.
  23. Hi, everyone I'm Betsy, and I'm a bandster-in-waiting. I've done the seminar, and am awaiting my appointment with Brian Lahmann at Silver Cross in Joliet, IL. While I am not yet 100% certain, I believe he and Dr. Joyce lean toward Realize banding for their banding patients; I will learn more on August 21. I am not yet sure whether I will be required to be followed preop with a medically supervised diet; our insurance plan has loosened its requirements for WLS, and I don't know where they currently stand. Either way, I'm ready, and willing to jump through whatever hoops necessary to get the show on the road! I'm a long-time weight watcher (not just with that particular plan--but with every one under the sun). I require ridiculously few calories to maintain, and even fewer to lose, and am viewing the band as a tool to make the restriction tolerable. I have just over 100 pounds to lose. On a less weight-related note, I've been married for 23 years to Mark, and have an almost-21-year-old daughter and almost-13-year-old son. I'm an RN who is now a science and health writer and instructor. I love to read, write, decorate, and entertain. I walk 3.5 miles with my "personal trainer" (3-year-old Lab-shepherd,Truman) each morning and, usually, every evening as well. I'm VERY motivated to get this weight off, primarily for pain relief purposes but also so that I feel like "me" again. I look forward to getting to know everyone
  24. We started at almost the same place. I had surgery on March 8th and was 371lbs! Whenever I fall off track I go back to basics. Liquids for a couple of days and then mushies finally solids. The aftercare is super important as well. I see my doctor monthly but seem to be averaging a fill every other visit! The thing for me that keeps the weight coming off is exercising. As long as I keep that up even if I have bad week of eating the weight still comes off, albeit slower than if I make good choices but still....can't be perfect. I think starting over is a great choice! You should google 5 day pouch test and follow that - it is kind of a reset! I wish you all the best! You can do it!
