    Banded June 5th

Friday I had surgery, and went well for the most part. My first surgery ever, and I woke up pretty freaked out. I guess my liver was a little big, so it took a little longer. I didn't get to talk to my surgeon afterwards because he had another surgery, and I was released before he was done, but he did talk to my husband. Yesterday we had to drive 3 hours to get home, and that was rough. Today would have been a much better day to drive home, because I am not as sore. I am still sore today, mostly the gas I think. My incesions only hurt when I get up and down. My stomach is still a little swollen, not sure if I should be worried about that or not. I have never had any kind of surgery, so not sure what to expect really. I got to have some cream of wheat today so that was really nice. I am really happy I had this done even though I am not very comfortable right now.

    Not fair!

men metabolize different than women so they tend to lose faster and also the heavier a person is the first to go is always water so the weight loss at first can go faster then it slows when you are working off the fat. I lost 40lbs first month at 10 lbs a week first month then it slowed to about 2 lbs a week.

7 weeks post op and risking it

It is not that salad is bad... my stomach just wasn't digesting it well at the time I replied to this. But... in the last week I HAVE been able to eat it just fine! Still smaller amounts... but it goes down easier. It is easier to start with soft veggies (steamed) and add more firm veggies as you tolerate them. And I think everyone has different tolerances for lettuces.
  4. Good luck to you Phoenix! Having someone in-house to, er, Root you on has got to be a big bonus! I hope your approval process goes quickly and without any setbacks. I'm up the road from you in Burlington, and have a 3/11 surgery date.
  5. After serveral attempts I got intouch with a person at my Dr.'s office and have an appointment for the 6th for a fill. I do better during the week with the liquid diet following a fill. That is better than this Friday and having to prepare 3 meals a day for 3 days for my family while I watch.

    Someone please help!!!

My doc said 60-80gm of Protein a day. I usually eat 1 egg for Breakfast or a low cal/low carb Protein shake. Then lunch and dinner are 3-4 oz of protein, 1 cup steamed vegies and 1/4 c. carbs (rice, potato, etc.). Just looked up the Morningstar veggie patty on fitday.com and it says that 1 patty is a serving at 81 calories and 9.8gm of protein. Three patties would be approx. similar to 4 oz of cooked chicken. .

    Work

I can tell you like Houston mentioned, it does vary. But that said for myself, I was sleeved on a Thursday morning, home Friday. Went grocery shopping on Saturday all by myself and was off pain meds except tylenol at that point. Monday I worked a full day. My day job is as an IT consultant and I am a professional photographer (in a very fun field as far as photography goes ). As a consultant I'm at a desk most of the day but often driving between clients or standing, walking, crawling etc to get to things. No issues at all. The Thursday after my surgery (one week post-op) I did a full photoshoot on location with lights, stands, equipment, etc. No issues whatsoever. What my doc had told me is that if you have a very physical job (contractor, butcher, roofer, etc) wait two weeks. But for most of us we could return to work as soon as we felt like it and that even a couple days afterwards while we might have been uncomfortable working, we wouldn't hurt ourselves working. But for myself I found it a non-issue. I felt as well that Monday after surgery as I did a week before hand. No pain, no nausea, just took some Gas-X to control the last little bit of gas and that was it.

Hi Sophie; To loose weight you have : 1) Less calories 2) More excercise 3) WLS 4) all options To gain weight you have: 1) More calories 2) Less excercise 3) seek professional help cause this might be psychological 4) all options Please you need to consume more, even if liquid. Drink a milkshake or two. Find someone to talk to professionally, you are worth it! Good luck.

    1st Fill Advise

Thanks for the advice. I know waiting is the right approach. I'm just worried about stretching my pouch. I'm definitely eating more and more often (but not as much as pre-banding). I was so good for the first 5 weeks, no slip ups at all. Now I have lost all will power.
  10. I only work out for 10-20 mins 5x a week. I eat 1000 or so cal a day at 6 months out. Still slowly losing. i only eat about 50-60 g carbs a day. 60g protein and I try for more. Over 50% of what I eat is fat. And steadily losing, no stalls longer than a week except one time around month 3.

    I got my surgery

After 3 Days of my gerneral doctor telling me i wasnt able to get it.. my sergon called me on surgery day and said she had no idea what she was talking about. the PA called her a quack!!!!!!! how great! well im still in the hospital with the lovely internet they provide! the pain isnt bad right now...it was bad for a little but the meds here are good  lol my mom is staying the night so she is my own private nurse  its like ***** treatment good luck to all bansters tomorrow and the rest of december!!!
  12. tracyc, for me it was 'emotional' after my first fill. i was told 2 days of Clear Liquids, 2 days of reg liquids and mushies on the 5th day. it was like having surgery all over again, i was sad to not be able to eat for nearly 5 days. but i've been very careful to follow the docs instructions and in that week i lost 5 pounds and it made everything ok. But, i'm not gonna lie I was HUNGRY for those 5 days. Remember that even with restriction liquids go right thru, so your gonna feel hunger. Wait and see how real food feels. Lisa

    First Post Surgery Dr Appt?

My nurse was just at a Allergen conference and said that one of the things they spoke about at the conference is something called micro fills. Like elcee described, small regular fills and when you are close to restriction.........micro fills, tiny ones. I am going for my first fill next week so will ask some more questions about that, because I travel 6hrs each direction for my appts.

    First Post Surgery Dr Appt?

I think it is 4-6 weeks for your first fill, if your dr thinks you need one.
  15. I have my post-op appointment at the end of the month and he is just going to look at my incisions. I think the first fill would not be until after we are into the solid stage. And keep in mind that some people do not even get fills sometimes. I feel the same way about knowing how it fits. Since we are still the liquid phase it will be hard to tell; if at all. I start mushies next week and cannot wait until I get that full feeling. As for the feeling queasy, I don't know much about that. I only felt queasy after I got up the first time at the hospital. Just take it slow and take LITTLE LITTLE LITTLE bites and sips. I don't think I went to anything that was not clear until about 4 days after surgery; I was allowed to but I was scared. Popsicles were, and still are, my friend.
  16. Possibly the reason that 3 weeks sounds late for a first post op appointment is because of the different way that surgery is done in Aus. We are not done as day patients, most of us stay in overnight so we are checked the next day to ensure that everything is OK. As far as I am aware most people get a fill at 3 - 4 weeks although some Dr's stretch it to 6. Some people have a fill whilst they are in surgery although that can cause problems. In Australia most Dr's follow a protocol of small regular fills - they do not seem to use the aggressive fill schedule that many US Drs do. It is not necessary to be on solids prior to getting a fill, it can be done whilst on soft/mushies with no problem. Some people go for months without a fill as for some reason they don't seem to need one. So everyone is different as is every Dr.
  17. I think a big reason people on weight loss forums are at goal weight is because they have remained cognizant of the weight loss process and because they feel like they contribute to the forums as a person who, for whatever reason, has been successful. I'll be honest, if I started gaining weight I probably wouldn't post on here a lot because I wouldn't be thinking about my weight (or trying not to) and I'd be ashamed. As for the keys to success, I think in the long term the biggest is to do what works for you, which takes some trial and error. I was never a rule-follower. I drank with straws, I always drink with my meals, I didn't pay a lot of attention to Protein, I eat crackers, I had chocolate a few months after surgery and a few sips of champagne to be polite 3 weeks after surgery. I almost never sit down and eat an actual meal, I mostly eat when I feel hungry and I snack a lot. I used to be big on sweets, but while they often make me feel sick, I really don't have any big cravings for them anymore. When I am somewhere with sweets, I just don't eat any. The one thing I found consistently is that when I sweets, I absolutely gain weight. If I stay away from them, I have a lot more flexibility in my diet. I weigh myself everyday and write the number in a little calendar. I don't workout a lot anymore because I have found I can be lazy and maintain at goal. I think the one thing that has worked for me is the daily weigh-in. Last November I woke up after Halloween at 137, which is 8 pounds over my goal and the most I had weighed since hitting goal. It took me until January to get back to goal, but it was a good lesson that had I not been weighing myself everyday I would have had a lot more than 8 pounds to lose. When surgery is over and your stomach is healed, it comes down to what you can do for the rest of your life. I was not willing to be thirsty during meals for the rest of my life, I wasn't willing to workout every single day for the rest of my life, and I'm not willing to be fat. Somewhere in the middle there is a compromise with myself that has allowed me to be where I want to be and also be happy and live a life that doesn't completely revolve around my weight.
  18. Hello everyone!! I am just a month post-op now and have lost 34 pounds already, so I am thrilled with my progress so far. I know this was the right decision for me, and although I am only one month out, I am concerned about what my body will look like once I am down to the weight I want to be. I know I will have saggy skin/chest, and I knew that was a strong possibility before I decided to have the surgery. Its not something that would have ever changed my mind though. I have watched so many shows about people having skin revision surgeries, and they seem to be in so much pain!! I have had 10 surgeries in my life, so I am no stranger to pain, but, I just don't know if I want to put myself through it. Here are the surgeries I have had: 1) broke my leg in high school so had to have a rod put in my femur 2) had a bone infection for almost a year, so after my leg was healed, they took the rod out 3) c-section 4) c-section (and to add, my boobs are already saggy because of these 2 children, LOL!) 5) gallbladder removed 6) lumbar laminectomy with fusion 7) got infection from the back surgery, so they opened me up to clean it out 8) had to go back in again because of the infection 9) had cyst removed from my palm 10 gastric sleeve My back surgeries were by far the most painful surgeries I have ever been through, but skin revision surgery really scares me. I don't know what I will look like once I am done, but I can only imagine I will need a lot of work. If I do anything, it probably would only be my stomach and a breast lift. I would probably just live with my arms and legs. The gastric sleeve surgery was probably the easiest surgery I have ever had...that and the cyst removed from my palm. The only pain I really had from the sleeve was from lying on my back for the 2 days I was in the hospital. I cannot lie on my back anymore (comfortably) since I have had my back surgery, so that caused quite a bit of pain. The gastric sleeve itself was almost painless. Anyway, long story short, I was wanting to hear from people who have had skin/chest revision surgeries, and how the pain was for them. I know everyone is different, but I was just interested to hear some stories and if people would recommend it, or say it wasn't worth it. Thanks in advance to everyone!

    Feeling Defeated And Depressed

Call your surgeon's office for advice and/or go to one of their support group meetings. Are you logging your food, Fluid and exercise every day? Perhaps reviewing your log with the NUT will give you some insight. You may need to adjust your intake to 're-boot' your loss. Sometimes it happens if you are taking in too few calories and your system goes into conservation mode. As suggested above, try to change your routine. Try a different form of exercise, eat different foods. Stalls don't last--nothing ever does. Good luck!

    Feeling Defeated And Depressed

My weight loss slowed after my first 80 lbs....it still stalls, and then I'll lose 6/7 lbs in a week, usually if I eat no carbs and up my protein. I also try to remember that weight loss can go on for 18 months, and it's natural to slow down. I also consult with my nut/ program specialist if I am really concerned ...I've called a couple times, and they advised me to eat more protein.
  21. I am currently 4.5 months post-op and I have lost 80lbs. I lost most of that weight in the first 2-3 months, and for the last several weeks I have just been STUCK! I am getting so defeated and discouraged. I don't know what I am doing wrong or what to do to jump start my weight loss again! I don't want to stop losing weight, but I don't know what i am doing wrong!? Did anyone else have this problem!? How did you get past it. This has been a serious stall that's lasted almost 2 months!

What the heck?! My scale is KILLING me!

With less weight to lose, I have gotten into a rotation of no loss for 3 weeks then the next week, big weight loss. Right along with that time of the month. It is frustrating but just keep with it.

    Jitters

So, with surgery scheduled for 12/20/12, I am well on my way to what feels like starving on this pre-surgery diet. I was told I could have two Slim Fast drinks and one Lean Cuisine meal each day. Why does it seem like this is torture? My head hurts, my energy is non-existent, and I am grumpy. I am trying my best not to bite anyone's head off, but it is really hard with a 5 year old and 3 year old that are so full of life. So, what can I eat to supplement this liver shrinking diet that won't counter-act the shrinking part. I ate a pickle today. I ate a bite of chicken yesterday. From what I am reading, most of these diets are liquid only. Would soup be okay? Thanks to anyone and everyone. All information is appreciated and welcomed!

    Question

My nutritionist did not limit me, as long as it was liquid. I munched on 2-3 sf popsicles just so I could actually chew something.

    Counting calories or counting carbs?

Those last ten pounds will come off if you are strict on your carbs. I am pretty close to maintenance so I don't count as close, but the weeks I do super low (20-30) I lose a pound or two. When you first cut the carbs your body drops the weight. Just have to be careful when you start adding them back in. I eat fruit and veggies but try really hard to stay away from the white devils (sugar and flour) once I have a bite I want more more more!
