    Lack of Motivation

I feel your pain, although I was only banded on 12/30/10. I am having difficulty with my motivation to follow the stupid post surgery diet and fell off the wagon in a big way this last weekend. I am back on the straight and narroy with the liquid diet today. Still no motivation. And exercise is a huge issue for me. I used to exercise all the time, but as I have gotten older (and fatter) that gusto is gone. All I can suggest is that you start with your diet and go through the beginning diet again, working your way up to solid foods. Maybe with that and an adjustment to make your stoma tighter, you will find things move again. i just have to not be in the same room as my husband when he eats. He is on the Atkins diet, but he cheats regularly... in front of me. Also, have a friend who you trust come over and clean out your pantry and freezer. Give them a list for the grocery and some money and stick to it. I was an accountant before I retired. Our budget has gotten much better since I started this process. We no longer eat at restaurants except once in a great while. And we only pay cash for such splurges. Our grocery bill has shrunk significantly as well. And while our pharmacy bill has not yet budged, it will before much longer as I am the one taking 90% of the pills. Just attack it as though it were your financial budget and you just lost your job. Cut out everything that is not needed or good for you. Bring only in those items that add value. Take that trusted friend with you for walks or, given your recent weather, work together to shovel snow. Working out with someone with you makes things easier and you can be each other's support. I purchased a membership at 24-hour Fitness. It is pretty cool as they have multiple treadmills, recumbant bicycles, machines, etc. They also have indoor pools, a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. All in all, not a bad deal for $199 per person per year. It is WAY cheaper than the YMCA membership. And they have specials for 3, 6, or 12 1-hour long sessions with a trainer. We are all in this together. (and I know all too well that cheesecake is wayyy to close to the "soft" food description). I won't harp on your smoking. You will make that change when you are ready. What about support groups? There is Overeater's Annonymous, Weight Watchers, or some other support group. Even AA works. An addict is an addict. And we are addicts. Our drug is food.

    Major Changes Are Frightening...

I am 10 months post-op and I eat/drink everything I used to, but in MUCH smaller portions. I was really busy yesterday and struggling to get calories in so I grabbed a slice of pizza from Whole Foods. I ate less than half of it and gave the rest to Husband (I got full AND it was too greasy for my taste). I hosted a dinner party last night and ate pie with ice cream for dessert with our guests (I do not dump). I am trying to stop losing weight right now, so I am eating more carbs than I have in months. I still follow the protein first rule, though. You will be able to enjoy some of the things you love in the future and you might be surprised on how your tastes change. 😊

Not Able To Eat During Full Liquid Stage

hi som today is 7 days since i had surgery........my shoulder/neck has hurt so bad that it was all i could think about. earlier this week, my Protein shake made me feel like i was gonna be sick so my dr called in a prescrip to help with nasusa. my stomach is bruised because i have to do levonox shots for another 10 days and i am frustrated bc all this liquid has given me alot of time on the potty. i also dont read where anyone is struggling like me but wanted you to know i understand what you are going through. if you can, how about drained veggie soup? or tomato soup?? i am having alot of trouble drinking but i am trying and doing the best i can. that is all we can do. hang in there. pm me if you ever need to.
  5. I'm so happy that I found this place.....wahoo. I am 10 day to my revision From lab band to sips. So here's my story an I'm stickin to it lol. In 2005 I got my LB. My HW ever was 340 SW 270 LW 215 My CW 232 Because I've been on my per-OP for a week. Last week was 247.8 My first yr out I got to 215 My band was awesome.I had hit the sweet spot an life was amazing. Then in 2017 I got rear ended at a stop light an it broke my neck in 5 places an my back in two. Plus it tweaked my LB. I had to have it emptied. Never found my sweet spot again. [emoji26] My weight has bounced all over the place for the last 14 yrs. So I started doing research an decided I needed something with malabsorption. Cuz I really cant eat that much for the pass 8 yrs I have been at 236ish. I am very grateful for my LB. It has helped me to never see 340 again. But alas I must move on an get rid of the last 100lbs. Pre-surgery diet

10 days of Protein shakes, broth, sugar free popsicles and Jello for me. I could have 4 4oz shakes throughout the day total. It's to shrink your liver so the surgeon has more room to work. Each person has a different plan though.

    Post op hunger

What do you all mean by "no restriction"? How much can you eat in a half hour period? For comparison purposes I (sleeved 10/3) can eat 4 oz of yogurt or roughly 3 ounces of cottage cheese, refried beans, smooth tuna salad, or custard. It takes me 20-30 minutes to get through that much. If I eat more than that much, or I go too fast, I don't get the "full" signal you hear people talk about on here (sore shoulder, etc.), but I definitely feel pretty crappy and kind of sick.

    Barely loseing

I lost virtually nothing in the first two weeks - in fact I came home 5 pounds heavier than the day of surgery. Lots of fluids (IVs), gas, swelling etc. from the hospital stay. So the 2nd week, I finally got down to my pre-surgery weight! After the first couple weeks, the scale starting moving down pretty quick. Had a stall around week 10, starting drinking a lot more water, and I've lost 5 pounds in the last 2 weeks. You're doing really well. Don't try to compare yourself to anyone else. Everyone heals at different rates depending upon how fit they were pre-surgery, preexisting conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure etc. Listen to your body, rest when you need to, drink plenty of fluids and be very cautious as you start adding foods into your diet.

    Weight loss after sleeve

Comparing yourself to others is a recipe for frustration and misery. I know it's really hard to get your head around in the early days post-op, but your sleeve is forever. You will never be "done" with it like the diets of your past. I promise you that 10 years from now, when you are happy and healthy and maintaining your weight, how much you lost in the first month post-op will mean jack squat.

    SO MANY QUESTIONS

Question 1- I struggled. There was a time right at the beginning of the pandemic (1st surgery was Dec 2019) where all I could drink besides hot tea was grape powderade zero (hated artificial grape pre-op) and everywhere was out. I distinctly remember crying in my car, like full on grief crying. I had buyers remorse for several weeks after that wondering if I’d ever be normal again. Be prepared with emotional/ therapeutic support if you’re already battling disordered eating. Question 2- A dry cough is indeed a symptom of gerd. For me, it’s now hiccups. If you’ve ever heard those honking plastic chickens just know that’s what I sound like. I did end up having a revision to RNY and hiatal hernia repair. They don’t remove your stomach, it’s still in there, they just bypass most of it and attach it in a y shape to another part of the intestines while keeping a small portion attached. The only reason I have hiccups again is because I have another hiatal hernia that needs repaired. Would I do it all over again knowing the journey I’ve been on? Absolutely. Would I also be more prepared mentally? Also, absolutely.
  13. Not really a question more of an observation and to see if anyone else experienced anything similar. So 10 days ago I got covid it wasn't to bad but I got a really sore throat lost my appetite and desire to drink mostly because it hurt so much but now I am having a hard time getting back into it. I can't stomach my morning coffee any more if fact I don't feel like drinking anything I feel nauseous most of the time and quite weak lack of food and drink. I am trying not to stress and I know it's still early days and most likely I am still recovering. I guess I am having a pity party but I want to feel better and get back to drinking and eating to help me feel better. On the plus side I have dropped 2 kg . Anyone else have covid effect them like this ?

    First appointment

They wouldn't offer both if they weren't a good solution for different people. Gastric sleeve, in general, results in about 10% less weight loss than bypass, but also has fewer long-term limitations...but I am a sleeve patient who lost every bit of their excess weight and more. In *general*, you hear of less sleeve patients who cannot tolerate certain foods a couple years after the procedure, and bypass patients sometimes end up being unable to tolerate certain things ever again. That being said, I am a sleeve patient, I am 21 months PO and I still don't tolerate apples, potatoes, rice, pasta, certain types of bread, or carbonation very well so I am still actively avoiding them (which, in a way, has helped me stay on track, so I suppose it's a bit of a mixed bag). I would listen to your doctor's recommendation and make sure you understand their reasoning for making said recommendation. There is a reason both surgeries are as common as they are.

    It moved!!!! Finally!

Finally, the stupid scale moved this morning!! All at once I'm down to 234!!! Yeah, I'm so excited. In fact I had to get on and off the scale four times just to make sure it was right. That gives me 19 pounds to lose to make it to my first goal. I was hoping to hit 215 by October 18th, I think I can do it! Wouldn't it be great to be in Onderland before Christmas?? Well, it's off to the gym.

Once You Reach Goal..did You Change It?

Jennifer, I have to smile and roll my eyes, I just was thinking the same thing. I have also reached and surpassed my goal. I wanted to be a size 10 and now I am a size 6, I started as a size 24. Now I want to be tone, I hate my legs and I was worried about my arms but they are looking really good. I am sure this will level off after a while, I think my eyes and brain are having a problem adjusting to the new me, I think I have trouble seeing my self as small as I really am. I think I have the body size corrected, I am thinking I need to fix my thought processes now. So you got company girl, still taking this new life one day at a time. By the way you look amazing.
  17. Congrats on your upcoming surgery date! 1. How long did your surgery last on average? under 2 hours - Oh I was an outpatient too, so I went home that day and got to sleep in my own bed - YEAH 2. How long did it take you to wake up from the anesthesia? I was awake within one hour of coming out, but not ready to go home since I had a lot of nausea. 3. I know everyone is different but on a scale of 1-10 how much pain did you feel once you woke up? Um, is 10 high pain and 1 no pain? I felt no pain - none. But I have a lot of buddies in SoCal group who felt a lot of pain. Don't think of me as wonderwoman, I avoid pain at all costs. 4. How soon do they have you start walking around once you wake up? As soon as you can - within an hour after waking up. I was not attached to any pain meds or pain pumps or catheder or drain or heart monitor or etc. They wanted me moving right away. I was just another normal girl, minus most of my stomach. The nausea was bad though. 5. If there are any ladies out there who had PCOS, did it go away or improve with time after surgery? n/a i have so many more, if you have any other info other than what i asked...its welcome! Ask away - that is what we are here for to share and cheerlead each other onto success. Remember we are all different, with different surgeons using different methods & tools. Hugs!
  18. Hi Everyone: For me this journey started when I went to the doctor in February 2017 about fixing my hiatal hernia. I have lived with the Heidel hernia for more than 10 years but lately it was giving me problems and impacted my quality-of-life. The surgeon I went to (who would eventually do my gastric bypass) let me know that he could fix the Heidel hernia but that unless I lost a significant amount of weight it would return. So here I am 6 days out from surgery and healing well. Greatest Challenges: Finding a good sleeping position that lasts for hours. Gas pain in shoulders. Greatest Accomplishments: No vomiting, able to do 4oz of Protein shake, teas, water, popsicles. Consistently staying hydrated and I love the taste of my vitamins. [emoji23] I hope to continue to share my journey with you all. I am thankful for this new lease on life and plan to take full advantage of it. Eating at a bar... a new experience.

I am really hoping the ulcer will be cleared by my next appointment, January 7th. I'll give it another month from there before I test my luck on even mild stuff. I am getting a little tired of being on bland, unseasoned puree. My life is greek yogurt, broths, and cottage cheese. But... if I can conquer 10 weeks of puree, I can do anything. hahaha.

  21. If you haven't talked to your surgeon's office in a while, it might be a good idea to give them a call to let them know you're almost done with your 6-month weight loss and ask what you need to do to schedule the endo and psych eval. A lot of bariatric practices have a "patient navigator" who helps to coordinate that stuff. I had some concerns about my insurance coverage (mainly because I hadn't been to a doctor in almost 10 years, so I didn't have a documented weight history), but the surgeon was very familiar with my insurance requirements and said, "Don't worry, we'll get you covered," and they did! They do this for a living, so most of them are pretty good at dealing with insurance companies.

    Chicago...... suggestions

if you're into architecture, Chicago is world famous for early 20th century architecture. The Chicago Architectural Foundation has TONS of walking, bus, and boat tours. We've been on several - they've all been excellent. Art Institute is great if you're into art; Field Museum is great if you're into natural history. We also do a lot of just walking around when we're in Chicago (I live two hours from there, so we do weekends there several times a year). the Drake is pretty far north in the Loop - north of Loyola. The area around the Loyola campus is nice. But go beyond that and walk down Michigan Ave - so much there. we've been to so many restaurants, but I can't think of any one particular one to recommend - you'll stumble upon tons just walking around. We usually try to hit ethnic places, usually. Scoot over to some of the other streets that parallel Michigan Ave - there are lots of restaurants over there as well. You could always pick some cuisine and do a search on that. We've been to Colombian places, Argentine places, Turkish places, Middle Eastern places, Cajun places, pizza places, delis, so many.....they really have everything there. P.S. there's a Nutella Cafe on Michigan Ave. Might want to avoid that one! (it's great but...Nutella - you'll gain 10 lbs just walking in the door!)
  23. Hi, Can you elaborate a little on a few of your points? You said sometimes the sleeve is not the best surgery for someone with metabolism issues and that a different surgery may be more appropriate... why and which one? I have been very concerned about this issue. I lost 160lbs 10 years ago on low carb ( I was still overweight -- size 14/16) and managed to keep the majority of it off. I've gained about 60-70 pounds over the last 5 years even though I still adhered to a low carb diet ( just maybe not as strict). Ok, so I'm thinking that maybe my body is immune to the low carb at this point so I tried Weight Watchers.... I GAINED WEIGHT ON WW. That is how I ended up here. I felt surgery was my only hope.... Let me add that I had Thyroid Cancer and my thyroid was removed, but I take Synthroid so that should not be the issue. I also have Multiple Sclerosis but cannot think of any reason MS would affect weight loss. You also said that if you only had 1 protein shake in the morning and 1 protein bar at lunch you would faint... But isn't that close to what we're supposed to be doing. Lets say a protein shake has 200 calories, so far so good right? A protein bar has 200 calories. So we're at 400 calories before dinner. My impression was that staying around 600-800 calories is optimal to keep losing? Help! Now I'm concerned that I will be failure at this!!

    I'm Scared But Excited

Sleeved 10 days ago. Woke up in Recovery with terrible nausea, but I haven't had it since. Throat was sore for about 3 - 4 days, and I'm able to sleep on my side now, but I had my gall bladder out, too, which causes more pain. I feel great, I have no buyer's remorse, and the surgeon already has me on mushies. You'll do well.
  25. Great timing for me to have an infected tooth! Last week I lost about 3 pounds on the preop...then over the weekend when my tooth got infected and I couldn't eat anything cause the action of opening my mouth sent me into MAJOR pain..I dropped 10 lbs. Pretty dang AWESOME! Then I had my tooth extracted on Monday and the oral surgeon told me to eat soups, yogurt and generally follow a liquid diet...I started laughing and said...no problem...I have been for the last week anyways...I then told him that I was having WLS next week and he smiled and said good for you! The infected tooth is helping me stick to my diet...not the best NSV ever...but it's pretty awesome...
